Diplomacy is a game of negotiations, alliances, promises kept, and promises broken. In order to survive, a player needs help from others. In order to win the game, a player must eventually stand alone. Knowing whom to trust, when to trust them, what to promise, and when to promise it is the heart of the game. Remember, you are a diplomat first, a commander second.

I've decided to try and run another game of Diplomacy, but I'd like to know if people want to play Vanilla Diplomacy, or one of the many (pre-made) variants available. Please submit your preferences here.
We're playing Youngstown, a variant that covers the entirety of Eurasia!

After the conclusion of the previous game of Diplomacy, I asked the players if they would be interested in playing with variant rules or maps, and I received an overwhelming yes. Before this game begins, we must decide what we would like to play. I use jDip, an adjudication software, so the first four variants are some of the more interesting ones from the prepackaged variants. The other nine were some of the ones that caught my eye as I was looking around. I would like to know which one people want to play as soon as possible; if a variant map is required, I want as much time as possible to make it. I don't have a problem making a map, I just need some time to do so. Please submit your preferences here.

Some people in the Ameripol thread expressed some interest in a game of Diplomacy, so here's a thread for some horrible, amazing backstabbing.

I figure we should use the 4th Edition version of the Diplomacy rules, released in this PDF, since it’s free. Refer to the PDF for more information on the specifics of the rules, but I will post an overview of the rules in this thread once I've finished typing it up. I'm volunteering to GM, unless someone else is dying to.

Diplomacy is a seven player game, so signup, and once we have a full group, I will randomly assign Great Powers to players. Meh, whatever, go ahead and choose.

OOC Thread.

The court of Isabella and Ferdinand travels the land, and was passing through Toledo when word of war reached their royal ears. Your company was recuperating in the city, and now stand at the doors of the court, awaiting your cue. Other petitioners are milling around in the hall, giving you a wide berth. Your deeds are well known, but so is your less than altruistic reputation.
From the other side of the massive doors, you here a sudden quiet, and the doors swing open. The booming voice of a herald calls out your names and you step into the presence of the King and Queen of Castile and Aragon.
"Count Antonio Castanos, the Lady Sara, and their companions, Brianna Alanis, Roger Kelly, and Gabieta Jagiełło!"
The hall is full of courtiers, ministers and various major Toledian nobles, whose eyes are all on you as you step over the threshold. No one has to crane their necks to see you, since the large majority are halflings. Upon a dais at the end sit Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, flanked by their small armies of advisers, companions, guards and functionaries. You come to a stop a respectful distance away from them, and the Queen stands to make a speech. It's mostly for the sake of the crowd; you have already agreed to spearhead the war.
"Eight days ago, the Emir of Granada showed his cowardice by attacking the small town of Zahara, and enslaving every last man, woman and child, while putting the rest to the sword. Four years ago, I signed a truce with Abu l-Hasan Ali, which was still in effect eight days ago. Once again, our southern neighbors have proven that they are ignoble and deserving of only the swords raised in the name of The Almighty!
"Now is the time to counterattack! Now, we can seize back those who were stolen from us! Now, we can purge our lands of the foul influence of the Moors. The Kingdom of Aragon, our steadfast allies, stands at our side as we enter this war that we have been forced to wage.
"We have sent out a call for heroes to lead the assault! These five brave souls have stepped forward! Join me in applauding their courage!"
As an energetic, if somewhat forced applause rings through the hall, eight pages come out, carrying five small, but seemingly heavy chests. They place themselves and their burdens behind you.
"Go forth with this gift of twenty five thousand reals, and drive back the foes who have too long defiled these lands! May God smile upon you!"

And with that, the eyes of dozens are upon you five, waiting for your response. Have you any dramatic speech to make, their eyes ask, or will you simply walk away with a sizable fortune to an uncertain fate?

War!
That is the word on everyone's lips as you wait for your audience with Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, of Aragon and Castille. The Moors have seized a border town called Zahara, enslaving the populace.
As a widely respected company of adventurers, the four of you have been called upon by the crown to retaliate. But first, you will need an army, which the Crown is, hopefully, about to provide.

I've recently taken another look at the Unearthed Arcana: When Armies Clash, and wanted to try it out. I figured that I should come here and see if anyone else was interested. As a note, I don't intend for this game to be pure combat, so expect roleplay for recruitment and management, and such.

I also figured that it would give me something of a playtest for a setting I've been working on. So, if it's shit, tell me!
Spoiler: Gunpowder weapons (click to show/hide)

Some of us have expressed interest in a meetup of Bay-12ers around the Bay area, so this thread exists to plan it.

So, to shameless steal from the OP of the southern California thread, because writing OPs is hard:
Who's in the area and/or wants to come?
What point in time would be most convenient for you?
Does anyone need help arranging transportation?

We have a Doodle Poll to find a time to meet up.

We are currently going to meet in San Fransisco on the 16th of May, at the Peace Pagoda in Japantown at around noon.

After desert, Johanna offered her new acquaintances a bed for the night, which they gladly accepted. In the morning, a messenger had arrived from the Lord's Alliance, asking for Johanna. She gave the wizard a letter and a small pouch before leaving to deliver the rest of her burden.
Spoiler: The letter and pouch (click to show/hide)
Johanna gives the party an official offer of employment, which they except. You leave that day.

For the past several days, you have been traveling a road that winds lazily across the rolling grasslands of the Greenfields. Sundown is approaching when you top a rise and see the town of Greenest just a few short miles away. But instead of the pleasant, welcoming town you expected, you see columns of black smoke rising from burning building, running figures that are little more than dots at this distance, and a dark, winged shape wheeling low over the keep that rises above the center of the town. Greenest is being attacked by a dragon!

Disclaimer: The following adventure contains chromatic dragons. Wizards of the Coast cannot be held liable for characters who are incinerated, dissolved, frozen, poisoned, or electrocuted.

DM's preface:
Back before 5e was released, I thought that I would be able to get my friends to play a pre-made campaign and make it easier on myself. I did not remember what sort of players my friends were. Anyway, I have Hoard of the Dragon Queen and The Rise of Tiamat, and would like to get some enjoyment out of my poor purchasing habits.

Quote from: Setting info
Tyranny of Dragons is set in the Forgotten Realms on Faerûn's western shore-the Sword Coast. A thin strip of civilization stretches down this coast, where widely spaced cities are arranged like beads on a string. A combination of roads and wagon tracks loosely connect the cities that stretch from Luskan in the north to Calimport in the south, passing through Neverwinter, Waterdeep, Baldur's Gate, and other great ports along the way. The bulk of this adventure takes place on the stretch between Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter.
No previous experience with Forgotten Realms is required. I don't have any.

So you'd like to play?
Now to the nitty gritty.
I will be accepting 4 players. This is not a first come, first serve game; I will be selecting the four best/most interesting characters on February 1st, so have them done by then.
Please use Mythweavers for your sheets; there's a 5e sheet in their Sheets (Alpha) section.
We will be starting at first level.
I have the PHB, so if you have access to it, you can use any class or race from it. I will not be reprinting PHB classes and races here. If you do not have access to the PHB, WOTC has made four classes and races available for free on their website, here. The .pdf includes everything you need to make a character.
For abilities, roll 4d6, drop the lowest. I'd like some form of proof for your rolls, a screenshot will be just fine.
Two setting specific background features are available: Cult of the Dragon Infiltrator and Dragon Scholar. They are abbreviated.
You should know that I will not be making battle maps for this game, as I want to improve on my description skills. Well that went out the window.

Players:
FelixSparks: Arwen Dunwood, the Human Fighter.
Dwarmin: Johanna Stonesthrow, the Dwarven Wizard.
TheBiggerFish: Adrik Ungart, the Half-Elf Sorcerer.
Twinwolf: Cora Lightburrow, the "Halfling" Rogue.

Wait list:
Dozebôm Lolumzalìs: Sir Fruitclutter Woodward, the [I can only assume] Dwarven Druid.
Andres: Sir I Can't Think Of A Joke.
Tawa: Sir I Can't Think Of A Joke's Brother.
Sentient Bowtie: Sir Vulture, the Aarakocra Druid.

Dropped Out:
GiglameshDespair: Sweetpea, the Wood Elf Rogue.
Pencil_Art: Aesalam Dawnwhisperer, the Wood Elf Rogue.
Tawarochir: Brother Cian, the High Elf Warlock.
Culise: Mirella Bergerie, the Human Cleric.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / D&D 3.5 PVP: Signups
« on: November 05, 2014, 10:43:42 pm »
Welcome to The Arena, the multiverse's greatest combat festival!
Every thousand years, millions travel to the Outlands in an attempt to win eternal glory and a sliver of divinity. You stand in the line that stretches for miles made of hundreds of bestiaries of creatures, waiting for your turn to do battle.

So what's this?
A PVP based game of D&D, purely combat focused. Play for the rules, not the RP. This is a game for powergaming. Bring out your biggest guns.
How will character creation work?
You have some choices here. You get to choose what ECL you make your character at, but you need to have someone who chose the same level as you to make it fair.
Custom rules are also up to you. Propose some rules, and get more people to give it a "Yeah" then give it a "Nah", and it'll be canon.
As of now, whatever you use must be found without accessing a .pdf. DnDtools, the SRD, and such are fine.
     Gear will be by ECL.

Life Advice / Which book should I get?
« on: October 02, 2014, 09:53:57 pm »
My first day of my "Introduction to American Religious Culture" class starts tomorrow, but I'm being proactive, and looking over the syllabus today, and grabbing the books off of Amazon. There are two required reads, but then we have the option of choosing one book out of five, which we will have to write a 10 to 12 page paper on at the end of the quarter. I've only heard of one, and wanted Bay12's opinions.

  • My Name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok. It's a novel about a Jewish boy in a cloistered community and his struggle between his god and his art.
  • Black Elk Speaks, by Black Elk. It's by a Lokota medicine man, and about... I'm not quite sure. His "searing visions of the unity of humanity and Earth", apparently.
  • The Autobiography of Malcolm X, by Malcolm X and Alex Haley. It's the autobiography of Malcolm X, a famous African-American activist.
  • Stranger At the Gate, by Mel White. It's about a gay Christian man and his struggle with that.
  • Dead Men Walking, by Sister Helen Prejean. It's by a nun who was the spiritual adviser to a murderer sentenced to death, and her "spiritual journey through our system of capital punishment."

So, Bay12, which book do you recommend?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / A F.A.T.A.L. Experiment: Reboot!-Delayed
« on: August 27, 2014, 02:16:58 am »
Dear Toady One and Threetoe,
If you feel like this might blow up, feel free to lock this thread. No hard feelings. However, I will do my best to ensure that forum guidelines are followed at all times.

Moving on.

Ladies. Gentlemen. Other formal gender designations. [helpme] Most, or at least many of you are familiar with F.A.T.A.L., (From Another Time, Another Land [originally Fanasty Adventure to Adult Lechery]) and the famous review of it by Darren MacLennan & Jason Sartin from RPG.net. However, you may not be as familiar with the rebuttal to the review, penned by the author, Bryon Hall, and another contributor to the game, known as Burnout, or Jason. In their rebuttal, they claim that their goal was to create a system to provide the experience of living in Europe, around 1350 C.E. [They got the tedium down perfectly.] They claim that every single dice roll only improves the experience, enhancing the realism. [Taste the grimebow!]  They claim that if you look past the sexual and racist elements, you have an incredibly in-depth RPG, with mechanics for every single situation, and that's a good thing. They claim that F.A.T.A.L. is not the "homesick abortion of a game" that MacLennan and Sartin accuse it of being. Instead, they state, flat out, that "FATAL is the best role-playing game that there could be!"

I would like to prove one of the two parties right [or at least part way], and one wrong. Why?
To be clear, I do not like F.A.T.A.L. or those who designed it. At all. But I have to know. Is it really that bad? Does it have some redeeming qualities? At all? Can it compare to other systems that were designed to be games?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

So here is what I am proposing. I need four brave volunteers [Scratch that. He meant victims.] willing to be non-judgemental, and put away their prejudices for the length of this game. It will be PBP, because that's what I have time for. Updates will be occasional, and only at night, because, unlike D&D, I do not feel comfortable opening the F.A.T.A.L. PDF/book in public, and especially not at work.

Basic rules:
1. Let's keep this PG 13. All sexual content will be glossed over. All of it. This will be strictly enforced by me.
2. You will roll for everything during character creation. This is F.A.T.A.L., after all. I recommend Random.org.
3. The rule book recommends that minors not play this game. This is something I will not be enforcing, but I am going to recommend that if you are underage, you consider this when you are thinking about participating.
4. There is some required reading. It's not too much, but it's worth it. The review, the rebuttal, and the forum guidelines. [You think he's joking about that last part. He isn't.] I'm really not. Not when it comes to F.A.T.A.L.
5. Don't cheat. [;)] Don't you encourage them!
6. First In, first served.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Since there is [thankfully] no online F.A.T.A.L. character sheet, I have... *shudder* [It's okay. It's for posterity. It's so no one else has to suffer as you did.] I have, through my own effort and volition, spawned a monster. Nae! An abomination. I made my own F.A.T.A.L. character sheet. The things I do for you people! Currently, I am going to wait until I get four signups, at which point, I will share a copy with each of you. It would help me if I could send it to a gmail account, so only you and I can edit it. I recommend doing as I did, and create an email under your preferred username. Also, if you see anything wrong with it, leave a comment, please!

I should probably have mentioned this earlier, but there's me, and then there's cynical me. [Sup.] While I have put away my prejudices [They're not prejudices if they're true] shut up while I'm talking. While just have put away my prejudices, he hasn't. He'll be hanging out in this thread, grumbling about the fact that we're playing F.A.T.A.L. [Oh boy, will I!]

Thanks for staying with us through this wall of text!

OOC Thread.

This tale, like many others, starts in a tavern. Tonight, the Dirty Goat is completely full of inexperienced but hopeful adventurers, mercenaries, warriors and and every other name that up-starts use to identify their brand of violence for hire.

They are all here for one reason, and one reason alone: to join the Hunt. Hence, tensions are just as high as hopes. Nevertheless, a bard is doing his best to keep spirits light, a job made much easier by the copious amounts of booze everyone is consuming.

Next to your tankards sit your badge of admission to tomorrow's tourney. You were lucky to receive this; almost three thousand applicants were denied admission to the 800 head pool of contestants. You'll also have to be lucky to progress far; the first day of the tourney is made up of three tiers of harsh elimination rounds. You'll be pitted against a random opponent or opponents in a battle till surrender or unconsciousness. If you win, you'll do it again, against someone who did the same thing. If you're lucky enough to progress that far, you will have your final battle the next day. Victory there wins you a slot in the next phase.

Tomorrow, you will show up for placement depending on your party size. The options go from solo to a five man team, which also determines your opponents (solo fights solo, three fights three, etc.).

The question is, for most of you, do you do battle alone or do you find allies to stand beside you?

IC Thread.

Setting:
In the world of Dartnoth, psions are considered evil abominations, an affront to the natural order of magic. Even though many have been exterminated, thousands of psionics individuals and creatures still live in secret.
You all have your reasons to see them dead. Revenge, challenge, wealth, fame and power, etc. Luckily for you, there is an informal inquisition of psion-hunters, collectively called the Hunt. They are tolerated, feared and respected by the general population for their efforts and methods.
Their membership requirements are quite strict, as a matter of pride: only professionals are allowed to dish out justice. One must participate in a number of Hunts, under the guidance of a Hunt-Master before they are accepted into the Hunt’s ranks.
The queendom of Tomann is hosting a tourney for prospective Hunters, overseen by the Hunt-Master Logan Trenar. You have all stepped up to prove yourself as potential Hunters, along with hundreds of others. This is your one chance for greatness, but you’ll have to fight for it.

That was a wall of text. So what's actually going on?:
This is a D&D 3.5 campaign based around hunting down psionic creatures. It is a sister campaign to Kalgena, as they are occurring at the same time, on the same continent, in the same world. The parties are welcome to interact.
32 point buy, first level. Rolls for HP  and money.
Due to the setting, I am working on new prestige classes. They will be revealed later.
Even though it sounds like psionic characters would be banned, they are not. However, you will be closely watched by your team and your superiors. You still have to be constantly vigalant, doing your best to avoid young, eager Hunters who are looking for an easy kill. If something goes wrong, you will be the scapegoat. Basically, everyone will hate you and will want to kill you.

Player list:
GiglameshDespair is playing Mutt, a human Psion.
Harbingerjm is playing X'ithzol, a Bugman Rogue.
AlleeCat is playing Aela Entaria, a Human Sorcerer.
Remuthra is playing Sultan Ab'dsomething, a Mummy Cleric.
Criptfiend is playing Ilev "PathSeeker" Nuaugamkea, a Goliath Paladin.

General Discussion / Bay12's posting history.

Some of you are familiar with the statistics center at the bottom of the main page. Most of you aren't, probably, because it's tucked away. Go check it out before continuing.

With me? Good! Do you like data? No? Too bad! Here's a ton of it!
Spreadsheet!

That spreadsheet is the collection of the data from the very bottom of the statistics center, in Excel format with "fancy" graphs. Topics per day/month, Posts per day/month, New members per day/month and Most members online at once per day/month. It's all there, from 6/15/2008 up to last month. I'm even working on some side projects, like an automated updating system and a predictive algorithm. If you'd like to help out with that, just play around with it, or have any questions, please feel free to ask!

I thought that you all might be interested, so here you go.
By the way, the early 2010 and 2012 spikes are undoubtedly DF2010 and DF2012, incase you were wondering. December 8th, 2010 is still a mystery to me, however.
That said, Haspen did some digging and came back with this:
According to devlog, that day Toady posted a bunch FotF reply links... and that's it v:

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Weaponize it.
« on: April 07, 2014, 09:28:11 pm »
Inspired by this thread.
People say Bay12 can weaponize anything and everything. So, here's the [other] thread where we test that.
The rules are simple. Figure out how to make what the poster above you into a weapon, and then suggest something else to weaponize.

I'll start:
A single sheet of paper, 8 inches by 11 inches. Blank.
