Title: Spellcraft Arena
Post by: Ozarck on June 02, 2019, 01:47:16 am
The Grand Colloseum of Exothage stands before you, sixteen stories of stone, steel, glass, and carnage. It's the ultimate testing ground for student Spellcrafters recently graduated from the schools of AlphaZed. Massive crowds stream toward the eight primary audience gates. Cordoned of between these massive archways are smaller entrances, for staff, V.I.P.s, and applicants. You wend through the crowds, working your way to the applicant line, Totem held protectively in hand, in pocket, against your chest, or otherwise carefully secured against danger. You, and several dozen other applicants await a turn at one of the several testing chambers just inside the entrance. The test will determine your eligibility to fight in this year's tournaments.

"Place your totem in the slot. You will receive your spell components. You will then proceed to cast spells to affect the targets."

The letters you get this round are temporary, for this test only. once you've passed the test, you'll be granted new letter. each letter will be one use, after which it will dissapear from your set. keep track of letters used. you'll gain new letters from various actions or scrolls or other items. taking letters will require an actions, such as picking up a rock and concentrating on the rock. you'll have to think of a word or words associated with the item or action you are getting letters from. For instance, with the rock, think of the words "hard" and "stone" or something like that, and you'll get letters based on that.

No, I am just bad at typing. the less misspelled, the better, but misspelled words still have an effect.

(6) a head sized glass prism appears in the air above the bowl, then falls. it splits the bowl neatly into two parts, which fall off the stool and clatter to the ground a moment before the prism also falls off the stool and shatters, scattering light throughout the room. You do not immediately receive any further instructions. Nothing else changes. You are still in teh testing room.

Creative, detailed, and thorough. I know exactly wha you are trying to accomplish from that explanation and your spell is descriptive.
(5) THe puddle glows softly. a mist appears above teh surface, swirling momentarily before resolving into the likeness of ghostly ships arranged on either side of the sea, sailing toward each other in combat formation. tiny wisps hint at more fleeting creatures: gulls and dolphins cresting the water.  The scene plays out in mi8nue detail, and, as the ghost ships collide in cannon fire and the ethereal shouts of imaginary marines, real sparks fly from the muzzles of ghostly cannons and muskets. The center of the battle is obscured by smkoke, before one ship catches fire. The fire grows rapidly, suddenly. and becomesa figure, standing tall over this tiny realm. it's still a small fire to you, buton this ocean, it is a titan. it takes a stride away from you, destroying dozens of vessels, and spawning three titans like itself, which each set off toward the cardinal directions. Ships burn or sink, birds explode in tiny puffs of smoke, the stench of burning sea life trickles into the air, and the 'ocean' boils. your titans reach the edges of their small world and, as they step onto dry land, they drift upward, forming four small globes of warm light, hovering at chest height, casting a soft light throughout the room. A door opens in the far wall, and your cards all go blank - even the ones you didn't use. "Well cast. Enter."

hzhEdkOXWvaCTrwtIpxihAPNVpqvdj

Spell hEXakAN and aim it at the 3 ft diameter sphere

I am unclear what the=intent of this spell is, and unfamiliar with the word. I googled it, and came up with two possibilities - one is 'hexagon' and the other is something about magic, but in a different language. So, the universe considers this spell quite vague. Let's see if it has an effect at all: (6) The spell turns the three foot sphere into a six sided cylinder, and consumes, not only the letters used to cast it, but seven additional letters as well (z d  O  W C P V)

Spoiler: Fiery (click to show/hide)

Spell GLOW.
(4) You glow, casting enough light to make out the shapes in the room. it seems you are in some sort of storeroom, filled with cloth covered furniture and racks of clothing. A thin layer of dust covers everything. The dust on nearest rack of clothing appears to have been disturbed recently - there are srreaks where the color of the clothing seems to come through - though it is hard to tell what color in this yellowish green light you are emitting.

I changed my totem.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Alright, that's fine. You are placed in a chamber. The floor is curved like a blow, as is the ceiling. Water drips fro the ceiling, in some places it is nearly a steady stream, while in other places, it is much more intermittent. The sound of the water hitting the floor is soothing, almost hypnotic. "Catch" is the instruction you are given.

using it as a weapon will disturb the letters, possibly losing them, and, if the sword is damaged, it will reduce your capacity to hold letters. You can only cast with it while it is in hand, also. The letters need to be reveals, so unsheathed.

You are placed in a chamber. You are surrounded by trees, which are aflame. "Break"

Bay12 seems functional, as does my internet. Good time to update.

I am going to allow you guys to exchange five letters for one random letter. You may choose the category of letter that you receive: vowel (a,e,i,o,u,w,y), sibilant (c,f,h,j,s,v,x,z) laminary (l,m,n,r,) or gutteral (b,d,g,k,p,q,t). I'll add this to the OP, probably. Note that these groupings are merely my personal grouping for the game, not official linguistic groupings.

Trying to get letters is a valid action. (2) three letters arrange themselves on cards in your deck: f,p,p. Of course, once you leave the testing room, all your cards blank again anyway, but this was a good test. You arewlecomed by a robed acolyte, sign another form, and are assigned a small locker to keep any valuables in,should you wish, and a sleeping bunk for initiates. Hang out for a turn or two while the others finish their trials. You can explore the colleseum a bit in the meantime or even head out into the city, away from the action, but I don't want to give anyone letters for the arena until everyone is settled.

Everyone who posted this round has passed, in one way or another. The rules were intentionally vague on this part just to allow for some creativity and exploration, as well as to test the system.

The Bell tolls, calling the participants to their pre-match rooms. You go to yours and are given three options for your first event.
First is a simple tril by magical combat. You will get your letters and a random enemy will get theirs and you will each try to overcome the otehr in such a way that a victory can be declared. Killing is unnecessary, but not against the rules.
Second is a scavenger hunt. You are to navigate an obstacle course of sorts and return with a set of items or words. THe danger is mostly environmental
Last is an exhibition. You are to prepare a Spectacle for the audience. this one is the least dangerous, except for the user's own magic, but it is also arguably the most challenging, as your spellcrafting must be exemplary to win points here.

post your choices and I will give you your letters.

also, please give feedback on the system. I'm happy to make changes to make it mroe interesting or user friendly or whatever.

Scavenger hunt people: You enter in a Group. the area before you looks like a large, multistory jungle terrarium. There is a stairwell criss-crossign the front of it. The stairwell snakes around at least one side of the zone as well. There is one large dark, cavelike opening at the bottom at the end of a long declined slope. Several smaller doors are at the landings of the stairwell. You hear bird and animal sounds inside. It is hot and humid.

Vendors. Hungh! Yeah! What are they good for?
I mean, can I buy letters from them? How exact would that be? Can I buy a letter m, specifically, or will I have to settle for a couple laminary ones? How many letters can I buy in one turn?
What good is entering arenas in terms of preparing a spell?
Also, can I pre-roll spells and store them so I can use those that have worked later on, in a single turn of spectacular wizardry?

The colosseum has to have some books, signs, graffiti in it. Walk around and gather some vowels and laminary consonants from those.

You can bold the letters you use too, to make it easier for the GM. Those parentheses might work too

Alright, here we go!  6, CobMSdnDEiqgShTvIkrZqYpRTeyYEn

Trial by Combat. Stupid me for not reading the entire previous post.

If I can't go to that immediately cause I'm stuck in this room:

Use the letters

rMK

to remake the broken bowl so I can pour the venom into it.

Spoiler: Nix (click to show/hide)

(3) you cast your spell. you can tell it's wrong the moment you cast it, but are not sure just how. At first, nothing seems to happen. You sigh, and nearly choke on an absolutely rA(N)K smell. You hear a sizzling as you involuntaily begin to retch, your eyes going automatically to the broken bowl, which is now bubbling and steaming. The room fills with a greenish haze and you drop to your knees. a rectangle of light filters through the haze and a voice calls out: "Get out of there!" You crawl tearfully to the door, leaving behind what's left of your letters and your dignity.

New letters for the battle arena: JKHjkkIeMQbBgvJTrOkQKkriHjdMAr

your arena is a construction site with the skeleton of a building, several construction vehicles, stacks of material and those concrete tube things, and a high privacy fence surrounding it all. You start outside the fence, unable to see inside. There is a gate a couple dozen feet to your right. It is closed and locked.

FWYZzaSfOCUJKRDxKrUjoIkLbjPfex

FLY, try to get a fly to spy around for me

Spoiler: Gorge (click to show/hide)

(4) your head is surrounded by buzzing flies. they keep landing on your face. You are not sure how many there are - anywhere from five to twenty.

Spoiler: Aura (click to show/hide)

UdyMRSryXwTZhrvEjEXUxZcCJEYYaq
Spell jUEcEy to cast a spell allowing me to sense juicy fruits by hearing a hum that gets louder as I get closer.

that's a nice spell. I like it. (6) You cast it and ca nhear, very faintly, an 'eeee' sound. Because plants is your specialization, this works pretty well. You can sense several fruit bearing plants. The nearest are  up - third story and along the west side of the building.

coZQyOpfvZoqwZqvgXrjuxuqzBtpyV
Cast the spell BOoc and hope it points me towards books.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(3) You cast the spell. it sort of works, but something is off. You LOoc around, eyes dilating, letting in too much light. The world stands out in vivid color. You can see details really sharp - even to the flecks of dust floating around the branches of the ivy climbing one corner of the building. There are no books within sight, except the scroll Gorge has, the botany book Aura has, and your own totem. This spell won't dissipate immediately, so remind me that you have it active when you are looking for stuff.

Vendors. Hungh! Yeah! What are they good for?
I mean, can I buy letters from them? How exact would that be? Can I buy a letter m, specifically, or will I have to settle for a couple laminary ones? How many letters can I buy in one turn?

The colosseum has to have some books, signs, graffiti in it. Walk around and gather some vowels and laminary consonants from those.

Spoiler: Willard, Card Sharp (click to show/hide)
For the future: when you are asking the GM questions, it helps to put a bold word  like ASK: Or Questions: so I know to look at the non-bolded stuff.

you can buy single letters, but it costs, of course. Buying from a category and accepting a random letter in that category usually costs less. Sometimes you can buy items that are slightly magical and absorb letters from those. Or, you can buy mundane stuff that might help you out later. for now, I didn't give you guys any starting coin, so you'll have to be creative. Sorry about that.
going into arenas allows you to tap into the magic being cast there and absorb letters directly from spell effects. it's risky though.
You can pre-cast spells and save them. But if it's an instantaneous spell - the effect will happen immediately. So to store an instant effect will require some kind of storage method.

now, as for the bolded action: (4) you find some graffiti. you spend this turn absorbing a letter from it. Vowel or laminary?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's not like you're gonna find letters just laying on the ground, yo. Gotta get them from something. What are you trying to absorb letters from? what kind of letters or what specific letter? Also, you are in combat, so 'not in danger' is a bit misleading. Speaking of which: [HIDDEN ROLL]

QtsoKOA(e)t(OBcnU)AkUQQPlgtVNDXzoO

He was woozy from his sudden relocation. One moment he was in the break room, idly stirring his alphabet soup, the next he was in this room and commanded to bounce.

Cast BOUnce on the shoe he took off, then throw it at a wall.
And duck.

(6) good thing you are ducking. Let's see how that works out for you: (5) Well well well.
You throw the shoe at the wall, for some reason. remember how small this room is? You bang your arm on teh other wall in your wind up, droopping the shoe in the process. Your arm bounces off the wall, throwing you forward. A moments later, the shoe wizzes past your ear. A moment later, your head bounces off the other wall, a knee bounces off the floor, an eblow bounces off a shin. After a few very disorienting moments of tumbling about, bouncing erratically and having your limbs thrown about in painful positions, you find all the bouncing to have stopped suddenly. a cool breeze meets your face. Then the floor meets your face. you don't bounce this time. No, you skid, smearing blood across the floor and your clothes at the same time. You come to a stop, dizzy and aching. Several hands assist you to a sitting position, head bowed forward, hand clamped over your nose, as black spots fill your vision. "Guess I don't need to tell you to come out of the test chamber, eh?"

pick an event and I'll give you your letters.

One letter from a 4? Hell. Should have made extra money fleecing gamblers and rigging bets instead. I'd probably be able to buy more than one random letter from that action.

Vowel.
Use a part, not all, of my ill-gained money to rent - rent, not buy - a red leather suit until my Exhibition is over.
Try to convince the trader that since neither of us has any idea how long it will take me to succeed, I should only pay for two turns ahead and give him the rest if I dilly-dally.

I'll need that suit to supplement my spell with the skepticism-sundering power of pop-culture references, the foremost force more potent than the power of adaptive alliteration.
But since this game might not work like that, I guessed it wouldn't be as expensive as something that will definitely give me an edge.

Also, trade qxQQJ for another vowel. That's a free action, right?

With the spell BOoc still active I look around to see it there are any letters to absorb near my position, if there are absorb them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
you get letters from things or from actions. Like, let's say you climbed up to the first landing on the stairwell and jumped off over the railing to the ground. You could get a letter from the word "Jump" or from the word "fall" or "hurt."
or, you could go up to the wall, and attempt to absorb a letter from Wall. It takes few minutes to get a letter in most circumstances, but from magical items or actions it happens much quicker, and in combat it can happen quicker too, though I wouldn't advise attempting to absorb a letter from Wall while in combat.

(3) Aside from stealing letters from your fellow spellers, you could get words from the building before you, the vines climbing it, or some things inside. Go pick an item and call it by name, pressing your totem against it. Speaking of stealing from fellow scavengers: a swarm of flies suddenly swamps you. well, not a 'swarm' really, but they are distracting. You feel your wallet being tugged at while you swat flies.

Go to the third story on the west side of the building, following the eeee noise
the eeee gets louder. (3) the door opens on a short hallway that ends in what looks to be an artificial cave - like on a movie set or soemthing. the sounds of livng things increases. you wander to the cave and look out on a narrow path thorugh some tropical looking trees and bushes. a loud CaW from just above and behind you makes you jump and squeak, heart racing. The eeee is further in, off to the right.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Go towards the stonehenge-like thing
(2) you get to the foot of the hill and cannot move forward. It's like something is resisting you, pushing back as you push forward.

Look around this arena, see if there's any keys or anything anywhere.

Spoiler: Nix (click to show/hide)
You walk around hte fence and find a broken part through which you step easily. You are behind those large concrete tubes now. You hear a clang up in the building just haead. second or third floor form the sound. There are plywood floors at least on teh second floor, and it looks like there are walkways on the third.

One letter from a 4? Hell. Should have made extra money fleecing gamblers and rigging bets instead. I'd probably be able to buy more than one random letter from that action.

It's not a perfect system. after this set of missions I'll open the floor for discussion of improvements, should any be interested in continuing.
I'm probably gonna extend your time before your exhibition. Let's say you have roughly as long as it's gonna take the others to do what they are doing, so go ahead and put your turn counter at 9 for now. You rent a red suit. Here are your two vowels: yU
Feel free to ask about game mechanics or if certain things have a chance of working or not. You could, for instance "ponder whether alliteration has an effect on audience attention" and I'd say "that sounds reasonable." or ask "do pop references make a difference?" and I'll respond: "if used creatively, probably. but yo might need to remind me that I said so."

All right, as of this turn, I've already got enough letters for a spell that does what I want. But I feel like with one more letter, I could do better: make it more artistic, more inspired.

I'll keep the tracker on, mostly for myself so I remember how long I have to get this done. It's always possible that I might roll too low and will have to compose another spell.

Question: does taking a letter out of an object change it in any way?

Trade yyU for the two e's.

Go to the town's marketplace and steal an m from there, using the crowd's bustle to cover my actions.
I mean, there's gotta be at least one m in the marketplace.

Pick up two of the clothing accessories, then look for fruit and listen if the Juicy spell is still working
(How long until that spell wears off?]
okay, you pick up a little bonnet and some kind of scarf or ribbon or something. (3) you hear the juicy spell faintly, leading you again through the chain link fence. it's weaker now, likely to fade after each use. I'll roll each turn you use it, or it might fade due to some other action, so time is short.

Find someone and use ROb on them, try getting their wallet

Spoiler: Gorge (click to show/hide)

Roll to find someone: (1) no such luck. You find no one with pockets, pants, or wallets this round. You do get rather lost in the safari park area of the building.

ALL THE WATER.

Spoiler: Nix (click to show/hide)
(6) The room fills with steam and fog. It gets uncomfortably hot and hard to breathe. Before long, the smell of dead fish assails your nostrils. You start to run a fever and sweat profusely. Your sweat stings as it trickles down your body.
out of curiosity, what was the point of that action, anyway?

I go down the path of snakes and look for anything of use.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(1) yeah, the snakes react badly to your stepping into their area. rattles happen, and a lot of hissing. (3) you do spot a feeding room up past the snakes though.

Cast "Land GUsH" trying to crush him.
Imma give advantage on this roll (4)(1) you create a large earthen geyser underneath your foe () launching him forty feet into the air. The earthen geyser sends debris raining down in a wide arc. you are in the path of the debris. It is falling on you. Let me see if the guy has a chance to cast a spell to save himself: (4) alright he manages to spit out a spell

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"saFF!" he shouts (2) his spell fizzles and he falls to his death. You win, assuming your earthen geyser doesn't crush you as well.

taking a letter from a thing DOES affect the thing. affecting a thing as big as a marketplace is a bit of a task. (1) which you fail at horribly. Perhaps a smaller entity wold be an easier target? a market stall, perhaps? Let's try that. (3) you pull a letter out of a market stall. It was a partial success, so I will roll a random letter from 'marketstall': 'm' Well, there you go. The stall collapses into a series of loud klatters: "rlkkaalttl lrarlkllra sllsttslsr lltrlktrll aeasesttka aatrlletaa kakakstele rarlsaatts ataleatess ateealttle!!!!"
The noise is outrageous, sending the entire area into an uproar. That sounds like your cue to gtfo, bro.

Whoops.
But now I know this game has Counterfeit Monkey-like mechanics, and knowing is half the battle!

Back away from the stall, pretending to be as surprised as the rest of the crowd.
Loudly exclaim "What the fuck? I was about to shop here! Way to attract customers, man!" to establish that the stall's owner is clearly the one at fault.

Duck into the crowd as soon as I can so the onlookers won't see me bail, then GTFO like a mofo.

Run towards the eeeee sound
(3) you run into a room. there are several trees here. The eeee sound is coming from up, up, up. there is a singular tree in the center of the large room whose trunk is four foot wide and rises straight up for about twenty feet before branching. Up there, the eee resolves into a set of distinct tones

Run away from the geyser.
A straight run away, huh? Not even a ZwM for speed? (4+1) v. (1+3) You run. You stumble and roll a bit down the hill, over a lip and into a shallow creek. The geyser of dirt engulfs you, raining pebbles, grass, small stones and earthworms and insects onto you. You are swept about fifteen feet along in the landslide. You may have broken a leg. The weight of dirt on you is a bit suffocating. But the worst is over if you can drag yourself out of your burial.

Whoops.

(5) you find a big map kiosk. It points you toward the garden section of the Giant Terrarium that is this arena. You go to the garden section. There, you find a plethora of pinatas vegetables, all growing in rows, in squares, in hydroponic towers, in steppes, in dirt.

(4) all the snakes slither away into snake enclosures. Some of them purge their meals along the way, leaving rats and entrails and birds and possibly a badly digested armadillo scattered around. You go into the feeding area. It has shelves and cages and glass enclosures lining everywhere, full of a variety of animal foods. Or food animals.

Eh, I've seen worse.
Politely tap one of the frightened shoppers on the shoulder, looking him in the eye with confidence that he'll let me pass:
"Hey, mind if I pass through? I've got to find somewhere else to shop now that this stall has vanished on me."
Very few people refuse passage to a politely confident person.
Repeat the procedure as necessary, to make a way for myself without breaking the illusion of my innocence.

*stares blankly*
Aside from "Counterfeit Monkey RTD"?

Well, I guess "Putting the Pun in Punic" could be an interesting one: a take on the Rome-Carthage opposition in an alternate universe where magic is based on manipulating the names of things.
Though, I suppose, the Punic Wars were too epic and slow-moving to really connect with the RTD's fast-paced nature. If anything, it's more of a writing prompt.
(A classic example of name-related magic from the original game: removing a k from one dangerously nosy character's "pink T-shirt" leads to an outcome that is cringe-worthy and hilarious at the same time. Removing p from the pink T-shirt instead is a humane but slightly less satisfying alternative, as is freaking her out with an ear that you've magicked up from a pear.)

But really, the name is something that will be defined by the game itself.
I'll figure it out once I'm done procrastinating. There's far more important crap to sort out first, such as the whole 'making money' thing.

Well, there's no real substitute for Counterfeit Monkey. Not even a good RTD. Hell, not even a nice MLT.
It is to interactive fiction what Planescape: Torment is to RPGs or Life is Strange to adventures: heartbreakingly brilliant, hopelessly addictive and soul-crushingly unique.
