Title: Dwarf Fortress; Live! (Twitch Streaming)
Post by: Ledi on March 02, 2014, 04:37:56 am
Hello forum goers!

I've recently gotten back into Dwarf Fortress (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/) after... at least a year's break, possibly more. Even before the break I was a rather basic player, and tended to play my embarks very, very safe.

I'd like to learn more about the game - and what better way to do that than by playing new worlds and sharing my awful failures with the community...Live!

The idea I present is that I get World Gen files from members of the forum. I'll choose one, most likely at random and create a world using those parameters, then sniff out a few embark locations which I'll let you vote on to play/stream until the fort crumbles. Dwarf nicknaming, suggestions and such will definitely be encouraged - that's the entire reason I want to stream.

Most of my forts of old used to be relatively self-sufficient, but I've not dabbled much with military or engineering and I stopped playing before minecarts were introduced and worn-out clothing became an issue. I also tend to go through world gen after world gen to find the 'perfect' embark - volcano, water, trees, iron, soil... the works. While I don't feel ready to step into scorching deserts or haunted taigas quite yet, having one world that I MUST choose from will hopefully curb this habit of mine and help me learn to cope in other situations.

I'll be playing DF in ASCII mode using Raving's square tileset (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository#Raving) from the wiki. The world (and Twitch) needs more ASCII Dwarf and honestly I can’t read graphical tilesets. I'm using the Lazy Newb Pack PeridexisErrant's Dwarf Fortress Starter Pack (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126076.0) for its useful bundled utilities - Dwarf Therapist, Quickfort, DFHack (for bug fixes) and such.

I intend to stream on a regular basis, for at least a couple of hours three days a week or so. I know a LOT of that time will be management, but hopefully there shall be hijinks too! I'll only play the fort on the stream, so there won't be sneaky goings-on in between when no one's watching.

Right now I’m thinking of streaming say… 7-9PM my time on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday to start with (unless I'm not available). Sessions always could end up going longer if I get into the game and people are watching, of course.

I’m Australian so the times will be a little strange to some, let’s have a look here. 7PM my time (+1030 hours since we’re under daylight savings until April)  is apparently 4:30am EST so I apologise to those in the US. If I get enough interest I could try and make one of the weekly sessions at a more convenient time but that would have to be discussed later.

I'll be cross-posting highlights to threads in both the official Dwarf Fortress (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=136795.0) forum and BrokenForum (http://brokenforum.com/index.php?threads/dwarf-fortress-live-give-me-a-worldgen-and-watch-the-fun.7341/) and will of course allow namings and suggestions from those who can’t make the stream times!  Major decisions will be discussed and voted on in between sessions to allow all a chance to have their say.

Let me get this right. You want other players to gen a world for you. After which you'll find a good spot in a randomly chosen world by another player?

Should be fun!

More or less! Instead of them genning the world themselves it'll be much faster if they just supply me with the World Gen text file, either with a random seed or one they've set themselves. I figured that way no one needs to upload anything if they don't have hosting/limited bandwidth, just post some spoilered code that I'll copy into a folder of collected World Gens. ^^

*polite cough* If someone could provide me with a world gen I'd be able to start with that part of the fun! XD

For now, I intend to stream one of my old forts tonight... year 2, goblins are angry and I've only JUST set up forges. Oh, and a hill giant killed the elves. Free stuff! And all my military is dead.

Sorry for the double post.

Edit: Stream is over, thanks to all who were watching. My first siege! XD

That is a fun looking map, lots of interesting embarks.

That little red outcove on the southern-east most continent, is that some type of desert swamp?

No, that's just red sand desert.
I like that evil glacier, that is south from mountain chain of north-central continent. It borders joyousl wild forest, and potentially will have undead unicorns and satyrs.

Didnt even notice that little gem of an embark point, looks like alot of !!F-... I mean, a good place for Ledi to make his first attempt at this thread :))

Ooh, a worldgen! I'll have a looksee and see what I can find!

Not the evil glacier, though... like I said above that was my first survived siege for my other fort today. I really wasn't kidding when I said I have very little military experience. Heck, I don't even know how to pierce an aquifer. >.> Those sorts of reasons are what led me to this idea in the first place.

Hopefully I'll have some embark possibilities up before Saturday.

Here are two world gens that produce some neat results. The first contains my all time favorite volcano/river embark site. It's a medium world with a lot of volcanism, monsters and savage biomes but this is balanced by a lot of minerals. The volcano embark I spoke of is located in the west of the map slightly to the west of the tip of some mountains. With a 3x5 embark you can have both the volcano in the east and the river in the west along with untamed desert wilds in the north and a tropical grassland wilderness to the south. The site contains everything required for a steel, glass, wood and farming industries and some interesting local wildlife. It is a relatively large site that runs only slightly faster than a 4x4 embark so if your computer chugs a bit on a 4x4 you might want to avoid it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The second world gen I included because it has a large river system running down the center of the continent that has dug out an extensive system of canyons with countless waterfalls. There are slightly more caves than normal. This world has a lot of volcanism and savage biomes along with abundant minerals and is designed to run with even a longer history than the first one. Even at a thousand years you should still have things like dragons running around, full sized adult dragons at that. It was one of my primary goals to create a world where 1000 year old dragons could exist. Be warned. If you don't run the history for at least a few hundred years to thin out the herds of mega beasts this world will be absolutely teaming with them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I should also add that the minimum pop that titans can attack you has been increased by 10. I did this because I'm a newbie and I found that the sort of titans you run into after a thousand year world gen are truly dangerous enemies as they are the ones that have survived through centuries of battle. These worlds also have more necromancer secrets than normal as the increased savage biomes I added seem to inhibit necromancer towers from forming as often and it sort of balances things out a bit.

Thanks Melting Sky, I'll add those to the worldgen filofax for future reference! As I get more generation files I'll pick one at random after a fort falls to generate as the new Dwarven Realm. I should make up a reason why I need a new world each time.. maybe the fort is tied to the thread of the world and if it falls the entire thing unravels. Or implodes. Plane-hopping Dwarfs!

UPDATE!

Now we have a world! I generated it last night and spent a bit of time looking around. It’s interesting and some parts of it make me go very ‘nope’. I turned aquifers back on because I need to learn how to deal with them...sometime (you might notice no area has a full aquifer though ^^;). Temperature is currently off for FPS reasons since it’s only really important if I’m in a freezing/scorching biome or something catches on fire.

I decided that I was going to choose five possible embark sites for each world. I’m pretty sure I know which of these is going to end up being the one, but I promised choices!

To vote for which embark to use, I created a StrawPoll.me poll at http://strawpoll.me/1261730 (http://strawpoll.me/1261730). Please only vote once! Voting closes at 5pm ACDT Saturday, and I will embark on the stream at 7pm ACDT. Feel free to make suggestions as to what and who I should bring!

The choices (images in spoilers for size):

Well, at 3 votes to 1 vote to 1 vote, the Cold, Sinister Mountain embark wins… as I pretty much expected! This is going to be an… interesting evening, I can tell. XD

Edit: And we're done, and... things went about as Fun as expected... six necro towers in the vicinity, it rained blistering ooze, and migrants arrived just in time to be killed by a beserking ...miner, I think it was.

I forgot to get screenies this time, but I'll link the broadcast archive when twitch processes it.

That fort crumbled, so I spent the last fifteen minutes of the stream going to the mirthful embark and looking around.

This week there will be no Tuesday stream, as I'll be out of the house. Monday's is still planned however!

Thank you for those who watched me fail spectacularly at my first ever evil biome embark XD

Monday’s Steam recap: New land, Cold land, but at least no ooze!

Well tonight’s stream was fun, and had much less doom! A few screenshots to summarise - please forgive the quality but I had to take them from the saved stream. Mostly setting up a small fort to try and get some safety for the future, creating workshops etc.

As I mentioned in my last post, there will be no Tuesday stream this week, so I will see you all again on Saturday. Thank you to those who came to watch me play!

Looks like a nice solid start this time.  :)

It does, far better than the last. XD

Since there's a bit of a break before the next stream, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on what I should focus next? I feel I need more migrants before I can start up too many industries or a military, but military has ALWAYS been my weak point. I'd also like to roof and wall off a 'verandah' to plant some outside crops for variety while it's safe, but again, lack of dwarfpower for masons.

I think I realised why the brook never thawed - I have temperature off. I'll turn it back on and see how my FPS goes, hopefully I can create a cistern underground if the brook starts up again after that to use as a well and hospital resource.

Leaving temperature on is pretty important particularly in cold or extremely hot biomes where it has a real effect on day to day play. You might as well leave on all the various game effects until you start to actually suffer FPS loss at which point you can start culling the less important ones. The one exception to that rule might be the population cap since once you have too many dwarves for the CPU to handle there really is no easy way to "turn it off."

A lot of people neglect the military until its too late mostly due to the horrendously poor user interface in the menus that handle it. It takes quite a while to master that interface and even after you have its still a real clunky pain in the rear. Better to bite the bullet early and get at least a bare bones squad put together so they can start training. Marksmen are cheap and easy to equip.

You could also carve out a little bunker with some fortifications overlooking the entrance to your fort so you have a good spot for marksdwarves to rain death down upon unwelcome visitors that are bound to come knocking at some point.

It's a bit hard to tell from the photos but you don't seem to have a well yet so that would also be a great early project. You could cut an underground aqua duct out to the river and even install a couple of water wheels along it for future power generation with a cistern and well at the end. Just be very careful to make sure that it all stays underground because once its been opened to the sky I think your icy climate will cause it to freeze which will cause all sorts of havoc.

Saturday 15th March Recap

Well, it was mostly an uneventful stream.

Last time we had just traded with the dwarven caravan and were working on enlarging some of the rooms.

Spoiler: Where we left off (click to show/hide)

We had a content and mostly busy group of thirteen dwarves after two migration waves.

Spoiler: Who we left off with (click to show/hide)

Things went quietly - and turning temperature on again meant that the brook has slightly thawed (currently my highest priority is to get some liquid containment up and running so it won’t freeze again), until this happened.

Yes, that’s 27 migrants in one wave, effectively tripling our workforce. As one viewer remarked, it seems like the entire mountainhome decided to move in at once. After the cistern, bedrooms are definitely high on the list. And a military, at least of marksdwarves - I made a little pillbox area over the entrance with fortifications (while managing to strand three workers up there) for when they are trained.

Elven traders arrived and I bought a giant hedgehog from them because I could. I’d like to make an outdoors farm at some stage but not sure how safe that would be.

Just before they left and I was wrapping things up, this happened.

Spoiler: Wait, more of you?! (click to show/hide)

I have not yet checked how many migrants arrived. That’s something we all learn tomorrow night!

Monday 17th March Recap

We had gobbos today! Annoying gobbos that killed some of my dwarves. :( But they got routed or bored, and the one that fell into the pit was shot by my hastily cobbled together marksdwarf squad.

But first… the migrant wave from Saturday. Thankfully only numbering nine souls in all, so much much more manageable. They were put to work.

Spoiler: The New Nine (click to show/hide)

Even with more hands, unfortunately we didn’t manage to get the cistern working before autumn froze the brook again. We did set up some fortifications so that all will be needed come spring is a few channels dug and we’ll be filling up. Must remember to dig well holes before that.

Spoiler: Still no water (click to show/hide)

This was bad news when the goblins ambushed us, as it meant no washing or giving water. Not that we have soap either… Note to self, make soap.

We had a second mood, a double blech since it was both a craftdwarf and a possession.

Due to work orders taking too long, we missed the human traders, but managed to catch the dwarves again.

We also had a few births, including a named dwarf becoming a mother!

Spoiler: ...Squidlet? (click to show/hide)

Thank you to those who watched, and there will of course be another stream tomorrow, where hopefully we’ll get bedrooms sorted and possibly sort out some military to deal with future goblins. I wonder if I should put some water wheels down there just in case I ever want the power. Must research water wheels… and soap…

As useful as the Blood of Armok would be, I’m still not willing to open up the caverns. Not without at least a functioning fortress with things where they need to be.

Tuesday 18th March Recap

It was a quiet stream tonight. Although we did get a migrant wave. Another LARGE migrant wave. I guess four deaths isn’t quite enough to deter the hordes.

Spoiler: We’re Popular! (click to show/hide)

I made a rather large mistake, in making uniforms for the military ‘replace clothing’ before having enough leather clothes. The military got rather irate. I think clothing is also starting to wear out, so I need to *shudder* start working with the cloth industry and refuse stockpiles for old worn out clothes to rot in.

Spoiler: Oops. (click to show/hide)

We had another useful mood, a new chain for one of the wells! I was worried when the dwarf claimed a craft shop. -.-

Spoiler: Sokansefol Ocig Talul (click to show/hide)

The biggest achievement of the stream was… utilising the stream! Yes, the cistern was finally completed and when the brook thawed we breached it. Progress!

Spoiler: Let the water flow! (click to show/hide)

The last thing that happened before I stopped streaming was a visit from some pointy eared friends. We’ll see what they’ve brought (hopefully not an ambush) on Saturday.

Looking good. Having a working well is a an important step. It ensures that no matter how bad things get outside you can at least close the gates and hunker down and properly prepare to deal with the threat without dwarves dying of thirst and going mad.

Saturday 22nd March Recap

Today is a treat for you - Stonesense screenshots! I also managed to tweak OBS (my streaming software) so that it shows Stonesense as a picture-in-picture on the stream. If you like this new feature, I’ll keep it, it gives you something else to look at while I’m micromanaging bedrooms. XD

A short tour of the main Fortress areas

The entrance and the common use rooms. Many dwarves think that their dining rooms are ‘fantastic’. I’m not sure what’s wrong with them, they’re sharing tables with the common dorm and the metalworks…

Bedrooms thus far have come a little further in furnishing. Thanks to the soil on the NE side I’m going to have to dig deeper for the next set of pods I think. If it won’t run into the plumbing I might do that on the levels directly below and join them up via stairs in some of the central areas instead of making them dining rooms.

Spoiler: Bedrooms and Dining (click to show/hide)

The level above the entrance holds the major non-farming workshops I’ve needed extra of, although I still find that my hunters are (annoyingly) cancelling tasks due to no ammo. I really need that leather, guys, there’s a moody dwarf screaming about it downstairs. >.>

Spoiler: Workshop Rooms (click to show/hide)

Above that are rooms for farms and farming workshops. The northernmost room has now been opened to the sky and is in the process of being floored over again so I can grow some aboveground crops safely.

Spoiler: Farming Floor (click to show/hide)

We had elven traders from whom we purchased much cloth, then an ambush which was successfully fought off/goblins captured (I’m trying to strip them of their armour to melt down… seriously, silver axes? No wonder we won…) although one dwarf is still in the hospital (which at least has a working well now, with an artifact chain!). The migrant wave was only ten, but I’m thinking I may need to allocate some more dwarfs to the military just to be on the safe side. The issue is arming them… with no magma I have to rely on charcoal for fuel. Just before I ended the stream human traders arrived, we’ll see what they’ve brought on Monday!

Monday 24th March Recap

So many thieves and snatchers got killed tonight. Usually spotted by my hunters, who are also my marksdwarves. They don’t last long.

The traders had a lot of leather, which allowed my moody dwarf to finish his artifact before going nuts (phew)

Somewhere along the way we also got a mayor. I have no clue when, just that I now need to make him rooms. Siiiigh.

More friends! This let me make another set of military squads, best of luck to them. Mind you, weapons and armour are still an issue.

Possession. :\ At least the last mood gave me a legendary mechanic, this one...

Apart from that, I finished flooring over the ‘light’ farms, so I can now grow aboveground crops in one place safely. I’m planning to create another area like that, hopefully without ANY cave ins this time. I’m finding myself short on things to trade out, which is annoying me somewhat as I’d really like more cloth and leather from the dwarves that showed up just before I ended the stream.

Meanwhile, some more Stonesense screenies for you! You’ll probably notice not much infrastructure has changed, although there’s plans to create another level of bedrooms and hope not to hit soil with them.

Spoiler: Stonesense! (click to show/hide)

Tuesday 25th March Recap

My dwarfs are now starting to live in Interesting Times. This stream was rather more silent than usual as I have a cold and didn’t want to annoy viewers with my sniffling XD

First, leather from the caravans allowed my moody dwarf to finish his… useless trinket of uselessness.

The traders departed after letting me know what would be in demand for next year - it was easy enough to switch over from crafts to mugs, although I hope to be able to make more green glass serrated blades and mechanisms or meals over finished goods.

Spoiler:  Let there be mugs! (click to show/hide)

Then things started happening. My hunters came upon...friends. MANY friends.

We lost 13 adults from that ambush and I believe there’s a couple of dwarfs still in hospital, although at least we now have wells and soap. Saturday’s stream I try and rebuild the military without losing too much more of the workforce. I’ve started using copper to make armour, it’s not the best but it’s metal and I have yet to find any iron-bearing ore.

Apparently the deaths were too much for this dwarf to handle. Either that or the ghosties of carpenters past were talking to him suddenly.

While he busily gathered materials, a steady stream of thieves and snatchers were attempting entry.

Before the end of the stream, the mysterious construction was finished. I’m saving it until we get a baron, although I’m tempted to put it in one of the dining rooms to try and keep everyone happy.

I’m not sure how much military might is going to be useful to me as I’m woefully under equipped but at least if they’re training now they may stand a better chance once they’re kitted out.

Your fort is looking nice.

Those pesky ambushers did some damage. Maybe you could train some hunting dogs or use pretty much any superfluous animals you have in the fort and assign them to pastures near the edges of the map. Although the critters don't often survive the encounters they do make a pretty good early warning system and they can buy your dwarves precious moments to get underground where its nice and safe.

That's a good idea. I remember seeing a.... watchtower pillbox type design floating around the forums some time ago, maybe I should build some near the edges of the map and shove dogs or turkeys in them for a little added protection.

Unfortunately, something has come up and I'll be unable to stream tonight. My apologies to any potential viewers. I plan to stream again on Monday barring any other unexpected events.

Monday 31st March Recap

Well, er... tonight's stream can really be summed up in two screenshots.

Spoiler: Oh nooooo! (click to show/hide)

They managed to be run off after killing 5 dwarfs and I once again re-assembled my military. Luckily two migrant waves brought us up to 114 or so adults.

Spoiler: Interesting Times (click to show/hide)

Yes, there's a maddwarf running around babbling after one of his tantrums broke our depot (there was a rush to rebuild once I realised). And a new bucket, which will be useful if I ever decide I want a new well somewhere.

Apart from those events we've had more naked dwarf issues (I've kicked clothiers into gear), some newborns, some animals born and turkey poults stationed out by the edges of the maps. Still no sign of iron ore, although I'm starting my miners off on more exploration and digging to try and find some. I refuse to use prospect, if it's not there, I might never know.

Tuesday April 1st Recap

Nothing even noteworthy of screenshotting happened this stream, I count myself lucky. XD I think my FPS is starting to drop, I may have to run some DFHack tweaks to clean the place up and see if that can boost things a little. There's so many broken bolts strewn around the countryside, it's so messy.

We had a few births, a mad dwarf finally dehydrating, two thieves getting chased out and the human caravan came. That started a wonderful little dance of "WHY ISN'T MY BROKER BROKERING?!" and switching brokers until eventually I gave up and said anyone could trade. Got seeds, booze and cloth from them but as always their clothes are too large.

I do apologise for the lack of recaps this week, as much as I'm enjoying the streaming, the recap tends to drag on and take a while. From this week onwards I'm going to be changing the recap to weekly, probably on Thursday nights (gives me a couple of days to put screenies together)

Last week's screens have... disappeared. As in they're not in their folder. I am unhappy.

To quickly recap, we had a siege on Monday. It wasn't fun. They left eventually. We also had random disappearing merchants, which was annoying because I needed that dwarven gear.

On the up (?) side, we're now a barony!

There'll be a stream tonight, wherein I shall attempt to pick up the pieces from the siege. Due to Daylight Savings ending our clocks went back one hour, not entirely sure what theat means for the US time.

Unfortunately due to a lack of Internet, Ledi will not be able to stream tonight.  Hopefully tomorrow's stream will occur as scheduled.

I'm really sorry, but recaps are going to have to fall by the wayside. I tried this week, but there's only so much I remember from what happens, and it takes more time than I'm able to spare at the moment when added to the stream itself.

The streams aren't going anywhere, I just won't be screenshotting to recap.

Also, Monday's stream won't be happening as I'm going off to see Captain America 2. Tonight and Tuesday will though!
