War never changes, but it sure evolves.

This is a pretty simple game, each of you starts with one card in their "deck", a measly 2.
On your turn you may "attack" a land neighboring your own. If you do, you each draw one card at random, and if yours is higher, you get both the land and their card.
If you don't attack, you may "improve" one (plus one for every 4 land you own) cards you own, raising their rank by 1.
I'm looking for 4 players, but we'll start in 24 hours, even if there are fewer.

Is there a card strength limit? If not, players who do nothing but improve their one card can never be beaten, and there's not much reason to expand other than "to win."

This actually makes it worse. Now the dominant strategy is "improve to K, attack somebody, improve new card to K, attack somebody else, GOTO 10", and the game is ultimately expected to end in a tie where everyone left has only 13s.

If you do something like have the max card level be (5 + territory_number), there's a good reason to expand. I'd say keep old cards that are over the limit where they are, when someone loses territory, leaving counter-attacks potentially dangerous.

Every turn spent not upgrading is time lost. Considering I have less cards than the both of you than it behooves me to improve my cards, especially when you two are fighting.


Hey GM, there should be a card value decrease for attack if the attack failed.

Attacks are already suboptimal (if they were not absolutely required to win, no one should ever do them), why would I make the game more boring? I would prefer it if you suggested something that encourages fighting.

here's one: attacks now win ties. So you can steal someone else's 5 with your 5.

War is fought for a variety of reasons, with the main focus being on a need for resources or differences in religion. This game has neither of those. Therefore, there is no reason to fight except to win. If alliances are made, then the game will just be the same as before, but with two sides instead of four. There's no reason to fight, except to win. If everyone allies together, everyone wins, which is the ultimate best solution in a game like this.

Actually, this game does have resources: Land. Land is a resource because if you have four or more, you can improve two "units" at a time, presumably because of an increase in industrial capacity.
