Title: Delinquent Players Help
Post by: GreatWyrmGold on April 05, 2013, 08:29:40 pm
I have an occasional problem where players miss a turn or two for unknown reasons. I'm sure we all do. This is a thread to resolve such issues!

Here's how I imagine this working:
1. Player A doesn't post a turn in GM B's game.
2. B posts in this thread, with a brief description of the situation and ideally a link to the most recent turn the player posted in (or at least the game).
3. Bay12ers C and D reply, possibly quoting B or each other so we know which one they're referring to.
4. B takes C and/or D's suggestions.
5. Hilarity ensues.

-----

I'll kick it off. I have a game (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=124281.msg4154001#msg4154001) where the players play mutants. One is still in the lab room and doesn't have much of mutations (although he does think he's a pirate); the other is a repeat offender with a nice little house in a dumpster. Mutations include a snake tail instead of legs, translucent flesh, sensitivity to light, dyslexia, and being really small. What should these people do?

The first player should re-sort the lab chemicals by color (Hex code order). The second should obtain some pet rats.

@GWG I agree with the first choice by Nirur. As for the second guy, have him ride the dumpster down the road at high speeds.

The first managed to slip in an action and the second found Ana alley cat. Thanks, though!

I thought so, too, but apparently no one else has/wants us to help with this problem.

Communicating with my players would violate my ethics, using this thread would come dangerously close to that. Also, I am attempting to stick to the rules of a setting that I am not intimately familiar with and have some issues with being mentally compromised. So my players are already doing it tough and they probably don't deserve to be temporarily possessed by the Bay12 gestalt... This does seem like a good idea though, maybe it needs more advertising, try putting a link to here in your signature...

Also, I will eventually update my RTD.

Two things.

Firstly, I just noticed that this seems to be the 124,700th thread in the forum. If that's what the number in the URL means.

Secondly, Metamorphican Madness (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=124281.msg4156393#msg4156393) has more delinquent players. One is the same Bruce Thomson, whose player has relinquished control to the community or an interested waitlister (there is currently no waitlist); he is facing a cat who is a bit bigger than he is, and only has one arm useable. As for the other, he's blindly faceless and has injected himself with extra mutagenic serum. He's still in the lab.

Suggestions for actions?

No one's been inactive yet but if they do go inactive i'll do this after an unresponsive PM.

...>_>

PM'ing your players instead of doing anything else is the best option available. Initiating something they have no notice of (as a PM can also proceed to the email of the user if the correct thread options are stated) and its in general, a more polite thing to do along with a public memo of what you'd be doing if the player runs inactive.

I have a player in Utopia who hasn't been on bay12 since 2 days ago, and another player's action depends on him. He has until tonight to post but I'll put this here just in case.

My RTD is a group of people who are in a zombie infested city trying to create a new world. The inactive player is an alligator wrestler who used to live in the swamp and just killed two cultists. He can go exploring or help attack more cultists in the cafeteria.

That's a bit tougher, especially with games that have a lot of stuff behind the scenes, but I'll definitely consider it.

I have a player whose character is a man dressed up as a bunny, believing himself to be the Easter bunny. He is currently in a room with 7 people who want to kill him... eventually. There is also a downed helicopter with still functioning chain guns which are busy trying to take down a giant. No one is attacking him. He can cause random effects to occur with his staff (they can easily backfire), and he has a crowbar. His side kick is an insanely over-powered "mini-bunny". Even he doesn't know what it can do. What should he do?

Toss the bunny at one of his enemies after telling it that that person is 'a bad manperson'.

Kill himself by committing double suicide with the helicopter using his random staff! If that fails, hop around like a little bunny rabbit.

Given the information provided, hopping like a bunny is actually a pretty shrewd move. Just make sure that you don't hop near anything interesting until after your attackers distract themselves...

A new one for Metamorphican Madness II.

Link (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=124281.0), as always.

The character is a "lucky" individual known as Thrak, who currently looks something like a skeleton with no face. He also lacks all senses save hearing and touch, is mutating extra, and is stuck in a cage. What shall he do?

Fortify and expand the tunnels and mines. Prepare to move underground where dragons will be at a disadvantage if they were to ever attack due to the lack of open areas and the abundance of corners.

New one for The Isles of Misery (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=125780.msg4258437#msg4258437). Evil Unlucky is a big, evil guy with poor luck and an attraction to young girls who is currently naked except for a pair of presumably-magical swim trunks that he's wearing. He's in a stone building with a teenaged girl, an abandoned (but dirty) suit, vines underfoot, and a cherry tree. Next to him, in a doorway, is a rapper guy wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a probably-magical one-piece bathing suit who he wants to kill.

Awkwardly attempt to flirt with the girl in iambic pentameter immediately afterward.

Flirt with girl

A choice is required for a player that went missing some time last week.
here (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126137.msg4292058#msg4292058)
Please just post what the Aaron character should do in the thread.
(might require a different player if i don't hear from Humaan (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=16327)  in the next 160 hours after this post.)

Edit: no longer required.

So in my RTD game, I've got a player who hasn't been posting actions for a while and he's starting to get left behind by the party.
There is a battle going on outside between a friendly airship and a goblin balloon, and a stray cannon shell blew a hole in the wall. The two party members with him have went on ahead and just entered a room with two goblin crossbowmen, a couple rooms away, what should he do?

Run forward until he's several inches from the crossbowgoblins. Then, notice the crossbowgoblins.

Alright, TIoM (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=125780.msg4350320#msg4350320) again. We have one Jill Wonder, a young, somewhat psychotic English woman who is having a tea party with a couple of friends and a fish-woman she shrunk down (long story). Someone is wanting to join; someone is spreading vines over the tea party. What will she do?

I've got two to figure out.

Firstly, we have good ol' TIoM (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=125780.msg4366760#msg4366760) again, where Squintage the Tinkerer (who has a big polehammer that fires off beams of magical energy) is on the top of the mountain.

Secondly, a new little game called 2D Tribe (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=127869.msg4369664#msg4369664), where the players play a little band of tudies as they try to survive in an unkind ocean. Xom is an orangish tudy that just saw a massive predator enter the area.

OKAY, Seeing as I want to get the next turn done now that I'm back from the long hiatus, I need turns for THREE players in Mall Fight RTD-Ified (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=114105.msg3489298). Everyone is currently in the middle of a battle with some Pokémon Trainers, who have been whittled down to May, and currently the battlefield is a food court with the main enemies being the other players, a Groudon, and a Kyogre.

First of all, we have Tara McScara, a mall rat, currently in love with another character, Fernando, who is currently equipped with several TF2 Items, including a Medi-Gun, a Spycicle, and a Righteous Bison. She also has Adamantine false nails, a Jewel-studded gold pipe, and a handbag. She is standing right next to...

Dominic Wyatt, a medical scientist who came to the mall to buy shoes, currently equipped with nothing but a Scientific Calculator.

Finally, we have GenMan, a Victorian Era-esque gentleman, who is currently equipped with a cane, glasses, and a lightsaber. Oh, and he also has an ally, Regigigas.

Turns for all three would be much appreciated!

Tara: Locate Fernando and embrace him.

Dominic: Calculate his chances of survival.

Gen: Give Regigigas the lightsaber and have him attack a random person.

OKAY, I need two people for another RTD ROLL TO STRIFE, (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=122523.msg4004642#new) which is a Homestuck RTD.

We need an action for Castor Davrameshi(Pinkstar14) and James Cenaron(Doomblade187).

Instead of explaining their situations and personalities, I instead advise you to check out the RTD so far, it's not much, but I want to keep it alive.

Not helping. Especially since everyone has a Strife Specibus selected already meaning that they can only use certain types of items as weapons. For James it's Bats and for Castor it's Musical instruments. Both already have at least one.

Oh god this is about the dragon politics thing isn't it.
Truth be told I just can't muster the will to post for that. I dunno why. I can try to give you a personality thing to help you with appropriate actions, but otherwise I just can't.
Let's keep it IC for Xantalos.

Start a campaign of destruction. Kill every human in the country, as well as every dragon who disobeys.
Alkus would not do that. Doesn't have the power anyhow.

Have him look for the rebel group in his realm. I'm fairly certain there is one. The Anuir Recedation or some such.
He is doing that currently.

for Xantalos:
Step one: Find something not dead
Step two: make it dead
Step three: ???
Step four: PROFIT!!!!!
Again, nope. This is bereft of my character and is Alkus's.

Alkus is basically in the position to do whatever he wants regarding foreign policy, but has to negotiate with the ruling group for internal affairs. He sees himself as a reformer of sorts; Kymore is largely isolationist and he's determined to drag it out into the world, kicking and screaming if necessary. He's not cruel or anything, though, but charming, ambitious, and has a good sense of what people are thinking and how to manipulate them. He wants to eliminate the rebel groups because he fears they will pull Kymore back and doom it - and him - to obscurity. Kymore is a relatively happy place as it is, though.
He may or may not be attracted to the niece.
Probably is, at least superficially.
Looking for a competent apprentice that won't betray him, but still has enough spark to be innovative and good at their job(s).
Hope this helps.

Continue on with narrowing down the list of plausible apprentices.

Also this may help with actions:
Quote from:  Results of letters trying to incite conflict between the UNNE and Kymore
The U.N.N.E. doesn't much seem to care about the letters, though it's stirred interest and gotten them starting to manufacture war vechicles. Kymore, on the other hand, is freaking out, treating the letters as a matter of national security, and it's people are calling for blood.

Alright, new problem.

Half of the players in Thawed (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=136252.msg4996393#msg4996393) need to amend their actions. All characters are capable of creating and manipulating a specific substance.

Kext of Moodus: Chatting with CO, ordered to either try to stop the spread of some slowly-spreading crystal or else try to find various lost members of his team.
Kuroe Emiya: Interacting with one of the lost members, a runaway. She bolted.
Logan Glast: Tried to make a light hammer to smash some crystals. Informed that their previous attempt sucked because the material he tried to make it out of, not some issue with his roll.

Kext - Say he is going to go looking, once out of sight, go to a bar, and have a drink.

Logan - Try using a spear or lance instead of a hammer.

Thread: Into Empty Skies (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=136167.0)
Player: DarkArtemisFowl
Character: Delia Wyrson, pilot

The game's about military aviation as it was in the very beginning of the twentieth century, though it takes place in its own world, not Earth. The players are on a combat reconnaissance mission over an enemy harbor.

So, after some complex aerial maneuvers, Delia and her gunner Robert Schwartz are in a flying boat above some enemy barracks. Behind the barracks, there's an enemy hangar and airstrip, on which a plane is taking off, presumably to give chase to another flying boat of the players' formation, which is attempting to escape from the fight on a damaged engine. Another player plane has just pulled out of a stall which made it lose almost all altitude (fucking miracle it wasn't an instacrash), and riflemen are firing on it from near the barracks. Robert's action is something on the lines of "bolt my gun back to the pintle (long story) and shoot the closest muthafucka".
So, it's up to Delia to determine who that will be, as well as any additional actions. Help, please?

The plane is the biggest problem, the other allied plane can get itself out of the riflemen's range on its own, but the one with the damaged engine won't be able to handle pursuit.

Target the plane

So, same game as before. Two dudes in a plane are being chased by, you guessed it, another plane. The dude who requires an action is called Malachi Kelly, and he's the dude responsible for throwing bombs. The enemy plane is slightly faster than the one the players are flying. It is at a moderate distance from them - they are in its range. The enemy gunner has a heavy rifle. Kelly has several bombs and his service revolver. His pilot's action is something like "Fly away as fast as I can". Ideas?

This would involve so many rolls. So many bad, bad rolls.
Also, all the options that involve throwing bombs (which are a actually tailfin and impact detonator kind of bomb, not the round fizzy kind) are an autofail on initiative because the heavy rifle has way longer range.
But thanks, guys, if nobody has any other suggestions, I'll go update.

Enemy plane is faster - are we more maneuverable by chance? Try to get pilot to circle around and eventually get behind the other plane. Gunner should take cover as much as he can, but keeping his pistol out to take a potshot at the enemy pilot if he can.

Obviously, which is why you use the bombs as propellant for other bombs, to increase the range. How are we supposed to beat a rifle by throwing things at a swift object without resorting to stupid-crazy?

I'll just go and assume you're serious. First, no way to aim, so to-hit penalty like a bad mother. Second, the process results in an initiative autofail (or, at least, heavy init penalties) anyway. Third and most important, the bombs have impact fuzes. The blast wave of the first bomb would inevitably detonate the second. And you have no way to detonate the first one in mid-air anyway. Short of shooting it. Hmmm...
Well, anyway, their fighter plane intercepted the enemy and shot it to fuck, which makes sense.

The main thing is to not die with bullets in your gun or your sword in its sheath. Go for it!
Title: Re: Delinquent Players Help
Post by: RAM on March 14, 2014, 02:22:53 pm
Well, yes, impact detonation would turn it into a flame thrower instead of a cannon, which would be entirely inappropriate for the task at hand, and, incidentally, make the bombs completely inappropriate for use against aircraft, but very effective for use in land denial. So the only justifiable alternative is to stand atop the plane, draw a cutlass, and charge.

Alright, I've got a situation in my game Thawed (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=136252.msg5171496#msg5171496), in that one of the players (one ragnarok97...something) is failing to post. And we had such a good rhythm...

Anyways, the character is a former pirate captain who can create and control hydrogen. She was drafted into a new unit of assorted magicians to fight a sorceress-queen who froze the world a couple years back (this is the first year anyone's been strong enough to fight her). Currently, they're on clean-up for a pretty successful (if brief) mission to destroy some of the queen's minions, during which they accidentally killed or wounded a number of their own soldiers. Also, one of the members of the group is running away, but she's pretty much gone.
She's put out the fires with the help of the survivors, despite her own incompetence. What does she do now?

There are three mages and a wood golem stuck in a room with a ancient fire element construct.
One of these mages is probably going to be unavailable for at least the next few days

His (available) spells are: Chain Lightning, summon a magma hammer over two turns, summons a sword of razor sharp glass (nearly) instantly, self-healing, summon whirlwind (around self) and diverge mind (lets him cast two weaker spells next turn).
He is completely unharmed, as well as having no items to use, nor can he use any magic other then these spells. His physical capabilities are pretty pathetic, and unless augmented by spells (or a good weapon) physical combat isn't even worth considering.

What should he do?

The thread (and the current turn) is here (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=137128.200) and the mage in question is mastacheese's Cromwell.

Player: GiglameshDespair
Character: Ket

The game is a players vs off-shore community RPG where a character may submit a bolded action that will go through a dice system to determine whether the action was successful. Some actions need not be assigned a roll, such as talking and trading. Anyway...

Ket is in a cave-like tunnel and meets a merchant that wants to trade with her. Ket offers the merchant a book that can teach magic, but the merchant has refused, saying that he is no sorcerer and has no use for the book. Instead he proposes to trade a longsword for her scimitar. Does she accept the trade? She may also perform another action in addition to accepting or denying the offer.

The descriptions for the weapons are:

Longsword: A longsword etched with cryptic symbols. Grants the wearer +3 Strength, +1 Charisma.
Scimitar: A curved blade once belonging to a skeletal warrior. Grants the wearer +1 Strength, +1 HP.

(1) Material-Magic Interaction: Madman
(1) Project ARMS: Hibou

I have my pet peeves. When you sign up for a game that has very little requirements. And then you log on to Bay 12 and you post around on other threads for 3 or more hours. But you don't manage to take your turn. It urks me.

Also this game is experimental and to keep the momentum up and keep myself creatively going it really helps to keep things moving quickly. And I got to work tomorrow and I always feel really pooped and uncreative after that so it's kind of like the death of my creativity tomorrow. And it really sucks that the whole days gone by with like no activity in this game. And it's still not ironed out very well.

But bottom line, it's my call to make and this is what this thread is for.

Game: GridLand Survival 4, a game about surviving, researching, and maybe one day becoming a tribe or civilization.
Character: Amy, a Nymphomaniac hunter/traper with a decent talent for farming they have not used yet. A member of a fast growing species with fur that lays eggs and digs.
Player: Aigre Excalibur
Situation: Spent the last 2 turn trying  to get a group of non-verbal adults to teach her how to fish and failing. Before that they spent a turn cuddling. Another player has decided to use pyromancy to set a bunch of bushes on fire when it is dry. The other players are for the most part foraging and researching farming.

it is 7 days after the last update. They were already warned yesterday morning.

Opening replacement sign up for Tribe (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=177224.0). Had a couple players drop out during the tutorial. Now we do have enough players, but 1 is afk 10% into the game. I just really want to be able to host this, now that things are finally set up.

Tribe is cooperative game where the ultimate goal is for a small group of individuals, with radically different skills and abilities, to survive the year, each other, and finally the winter.

If that sounds interesting hit me up here, or by PM. Thanks.

Edit: This offer has expired.

So uh, you two might want to think about bumping this thread by asking for replacement players. This thread definitely isn't that (all the pages before this one agree). This is a (dead) game that youse are reviving and sort of hijacking, so I'd suggest starting a separate thread actually meant for finding players to replace dropouts or inactives.
Title: Re: Delinquent Players Help
Post by: Persus13 on July 14, 2022, 10:11:54 pm
Uh, not quite? This isn't actually a game thread, its just a way for people to crowdsource actions for a missing player in their own games. Asking for replacements certainly could be argued to not be the original intention of the thread (although its certainly an adjacent aim), but this isn't a dead game.
Title: Re: Delinquent Players Help
Post by: Man of Paper on July 14, 2022, 11:50:35 pm
It is functionally a dead game. Most of this thread can be boiled down to "Here's a situation" followed by "here's a ridiculous action" - that's like 80% of the games here. There's a specific format, and going "I need players" is not it.

At the end of the day, though, does it really matter? The thread title still works for what they want to use it for, and nobody's using the thread for anything ELSE.
I know threads are free and we don't have to recycle, but it doesn't seem like an actual problem in any way.

Thread title, as Maximum Spin said, and thread purpose as detailed in the first post, are not a game.

But that purpose isn't: a thread to request new players in.
Title: Re: Delinquent Players Help

Literally the 3 posts before mine are all requesting replacements (that was my whole page, since I browse at 15 post per page.) But I can see your point about the OP.
My game is too fast paced (quick actions, short updates) to meaningfully do what the OP describes, so I will not be doing that.
