Title: I want to see a fortress that looks like this

Or this.

And that, for extra challenge.

Either that, or make the Mountainhomes like this when generated at some point down the road.

So, you want an ominous and seemingly purposeless structure looming over an uninhabitable terrain, shrouded in clouds of miasma, surrounded by fields of bones and corpses, populated with wretched intoxicated creatures forever balancing on the edge of madness...

In other words, a typical dwarf fortress.

In essence, yeah.
But I mean - look at the size of these things!

(those are all paintings made by Zdzisław Beksiński - good luck pronouncing that - a Polish artist, 1929-2005)
I'm questoning whether or not he played DF at some point - which seems ominously unlikely)

I originally planned to post this one, but it took me a whole fucking day to find it.

Looks like something you would see in Gears of War, doesn't it?

Also,

Snatched for my sig.

-snip-

Now those are fortresses I'd like to see.  :)

Not the first one, it's a hippie fortress, burn it.
Second one - then remove those pillars and see what happens.
Third one - is that a city build on a volcano?
Fourth one - reminds me of glitched worlds in the Minecraft's past, where such sights of straight cliffs were not uncommon.
Fifth one - elves' worst nightmare.

But tell me - you want Beksiński's things, or at least one of them, do you?

Well, of course.

Forts like this are not uncommon, you can tweak the world gen (elevation X and y-variance set to 1600 each) to produce mountain ranges of only a few region tiles that are extremely tall and have very steep cliffs that just shoot out of a flat plain. Especially when mountains are adjacent to lakes or the ocean.

Pretty inspiring art I think I might carve one out like that myself.

The art is pretty sweet.  But if you really want a fortress designed like those, why not try to build one yourself?  It may not be ideally what you're looking for at first but practice makes perfect.  And if you don't like invasions interrupting your building, simply turn them off.

Great concepts, though for any fortress.  Especially the tree one. :P

I like the cliff one. From the looks of it that's what you would get if you embarked on the ocean and then dug half of the map all of the way down to the magma sea.

It would be easier to dig away at the dirt to sculpt the outside, and the accidental miner deaths would add character.

I'll start on one as soon as I get home

That extra challenge looks like something I would take up as a bonus challenge (no need to record my progress, due to just how insanely long it would take to construct; not to mention how long each report would take to write up (even updating annually)) to make up the Avatar of Armok or Ark of Resurrection, Menacing with Outlandish Killers mega-airship.

Another alternative title, within DF's vocabulary: Nazushdolush Atolvutok Nom AKA AVATAR of ARMOK: Bloodborn, the True Figure of God

That sucker looks large enough to utilize both the Bloodfist and Bloodaxe airships as mere fighters and bombers, or corvettes. Normally, I classify them as a frigate and a cruiser, respectively, considering how largely I can build nowadays.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I like this one. Arches are a pain to build but I'll be Dwarven cheese if I don't get at least 50 arches done. Small, large, arches are arches.
