General Discussion / Flight of the Twelve Behemoths 2024
« on: February 18, 2024, 07:04:17 pm »
Every year I think of twelve avenues of focus that I want to use to facilitate growth. These can be New Year's Resolutions; they can be bucket list items you're almost ready to cross off; they can be career-related; personal; profound; small; pointless; silly.

I'll put an example in my next post, but this is how it works:
- Spend some time thinking of 12 things you want to attempt in 2023.
-----> In practice it helps to have your goals be concrete enough to determine whether you have succeeded.
-----> Think carefully about whether your goals are, at the least, small enough to start working on.
- Write your 12 things in a list format in this thread.
- Post updates as you work on and complete goals.

If you wanna do a fractional-Behemoth, that is between 1 and 12 goals you intend to regularly check in on, that's also fine. Done is better than perfect. More importantly, everyone has bumps and surprises in their life. There are some things that we will never achieve, and that's okay. The goal is to struggle, together, for a year.

Life Advice / Vector Plays Rest and Self-Recovery Challenge
« on: March 26, 2023, 05:16:08 pm »
As it says in the thread title, I'm going off of work (my PhD program) for six months following some health problems and burnout. The past three years have been a nonstop trauma conga after five years of nonstop workplace hustle where I took at most one day off per month and school is, uh, well, whatever. They're not exactly being constructive.

I have pretty much never had a true-blue rest or leave or whatever, and I want to document what it's like and what kinds of things I learn. I'm from a rural family that has survived on its ability to scrimp, save, and simply be more durable than other people. You don't do anything for your mental health other than your morning cup of coffee and a look at the sunset or going inside to play backgammon in the hot part of the day. You certainly don't take a day off, or a week off, or half a year.

And yet, at time of writing I have found my limit.

Mending and other little maintenance things have piled up and up and up, I've been struggling to eat normally for more than eight months (honestly, since March 2020, but it's worse lately), I'm having multiple migraines each week and have sat sobbing in many parking lots in town ... and lately my heart has started feeling ... off.

(All that, and with the situation facing trans people, I want to spend some time having fun while the getting's good)

So yours truly is going to accept the challenge of spending six months as a NEET in the Sacramento area and see where it leads me. I expect to write a post about once per week and see how it goes.

It's that time again ...

Every year I think of twelve pathways I want to use to challenge myself, to help me feel excited as the calendar turns over. This is less "New Year's Resolution" and more "trellis to help a growing plant."

I'll put an example in my next post, but this is how it works:
- Spend some time thinking of 12 things you want to do in 2023.
-----> In practice it helps to have your goals be concrete enough to determine whether you have succeeded.

Life Advice / Vector Can't Smell!
« on: September 16, 2022, 04:21:35 pm »
Welcome to my fun thread. I have/had COVID and could mostly smell and taste stuff normally until recently. Then three days ago I almost completely stopped eating. I thought it was just me being moody because I do that sometimes.

Well, I got hungry last night and ate some food, but then I discovered it was rotten! Yes, the texture and visible mold gave it away. But I couldn't smell or taste it.

PURPOSE of thread: to make myself feel better. Please be nice to me, I'm scared. Specifically of my sense of smell and taste not coming back. I love to cook and drink tea, and it's one of my only hobbies.

Other Games / World End Diner !
« on: January 30, 2022, 08:21:21 pm »
This is the thread to discuss my new fave game, World End Diner.

The game is a restaurant management sim with some crafting and farming elements. You play as a robot running a diner for sentient animals and other robots on the last island in the world, after the death of humanity. Gameplay progresses through levels, so that you unlock a new level after generating enough happiness from your customers and the residents of the island. In my experience each and every level brings new gameplay elements; I'm on level 20 or so right now and have been playing for more than 70 hours. It is really fun and even as you unlock new skills that make aspects of the game easier, you always have to think of additional strategies to advance to the next stage. I especially like how there will often be locked elements ("get to level 8 to see this") and hidden elements ("you're at level 15, here's a new tab on the skill tree menu. Surprise!"). It makes advancement challenging and never dull as you plan and then plan again. You get to both anticipate using skill points to unlock that tantalizing new recipe and wonder what will change the next time you advance. Surprisingly, I haven't found it to be very grindy despite the simple core gameplay loop.

Also, the animals are really cute and decorating the diner with stuff you buy, find, and are gifted is lots of fun. At least so far I think a new species comes to your diner with every level that is unlocked. There are baby penguins and red pandas!!

Originally I was running a giveaway, details in spoiler below. If anyone desperately wants the game and doesn't get it, let me know. I gave away 4 copies so far and will consider giving away more.

General Discussion / Flight of the Twelve Behemoths 2022
« on: December 31, 2021, 02:01:44 pm »
Hello nerds, it's that time again.

Every year I think of twelve things I want to do that will take planning ahead, and brighten the future. This is less "New Year's Resolution" and more "farmer picking new saplings for the orchard."

I'll put my example in the next post, but this is how it works:
- Spend some time thinking of 12 things you want to do in 2022.
-----> The more concrete these are, the better.
-----> Think about whether you could realistically complete your goals in a year or not. The idea is to motivate you to finish things and plan ahead, and also practice gauging whether your plans are reasonable or not. Done is better than perfect!!
- Write your 12 things in a list format in this thread.
- Post updates as you work on and complete goals. Our purpose is to create an environment in which we grow together, for a year.

You can see last year's thread here.

(If you wanna do a fractional-Behemoth, that is between 3 and 12 goals you intend to regularly check in on throughout the year, that's also fine.)

Life Advice / Anger and Pandemic-Induced Isolation
« on: April 27, 2021, 04:35:50 pm »
Hi all,

I want some advice from people who have been struggling with isolation during the pandemic. I've been living alone for quite a while and it feels like some part of me that used to know how to relate to other people has shattered. Months and months of being alone at home, and socially distancing from housemates even when we lived in the same building, has taken a toll. I skipped holidays; I've only been more than 5 miles from my house twice in the past year.

I had my second vaccination on Saturday and in about 10 days I'll be able to spend time with others freely again.

The problem is that I'm angry at things like not having been bubbled with or contacted by people who have known I was alone for long periods of time. People have of course stuck to their families and significant others. Even people who I've known for quite a while, where I said repeatedly "this is really destroying me" and they knew what that meant, have basically said: "Yeah, sucks for all of us."

I have a cousin in town whose address I don't even know because she doesn't want to have anything to do with me (I didn't do anything, this is just kind of who she is).

I have a therapist, I'm on anti-depressants, and I have a PTSD diagnosis from a doctor who spent about 20 years in the military. The problem is not formal support, the problem is

1. I need to end my isolation now that it is possible

2. I am too angry at the people I used to care about and love to reconnect with them

3. I wish I could reconnect with them anyway but I don't have the vocabulary to talk to them about the magnitude of the betrayal; they don't want to admit what they did and what that meant. Or they just don't care that much about me.

How do I grow to handle events like this? Please help me out, Bay. My current plan is to get a goldfish.

Life Advice / coffee
« on: April 07, 2021, 04:46:19 pm »
Hi,

I am trying to learn to make coffee. I require the following two items that I do not yet possess:

  • grinder
  • french press

yeah yeah drip coffee is how our fathers, my father included, did it, I'm losing my right to call myself pro-union and pro-worker. I don't care. Tell me about what to look for in a grinder and in a french press.

Friends, it's a new year. I'm not sure I'll be posting on B12 regularly in 2022, but for 2021, I'm pretty sure I'll be around, so I thought I'd post another one of these threads. Some of the other Forum Olds might remember these.

Every year I think of twelve things I want to do that will take planning ahead, and brighten the future. This is less "New Year's Resolution" and more "farmer picking new saplings for the orchard."

I'll put my example in the next post, but this is how it works:

- Write your 12 things in a list format in this thread.
- Post updates as you work on and complete goals. The idea, more than finishing anything in particular or "being impressive," is to create an environment in which we grow together, for a year.

(If you wanna do a half-Behemoth, that is 6 things, that's also fine.)
