Hey everyone,
I'm a veteran dwarfmaster and lurker but newbie poster. I just wanted to give the people here props for being very welcoming and friendly. I'm not sure if it's just that this game attracts good-natured people or that it's a single-player non-competitive game, but the community is much, much nicer here than in any other game I've played.

A had a case of lurkeritis for a couple of months, but decided to start posting a bit because it was a new year and whatnot back in January. Boy this year went by fast.

I think it's partly due to the difficult learning curve for DF, and the fact that it's an open ended game where the player determines what they get out of it - whether it's for the stories, the city management, the architecture, etc., there's no mindless competition in racking up points or achievements. So the game itself filters the userbase into reasonably patient, intelligent, and creative people.
EDIT: And dousing elven villages in magma gets out all of our anger, so on the forums everyone's nice and friendly.

If I am hearing you correctly, you come in here and tell us that we should be talking about the topic, which if I recall, is about what a nice bunch'a stand-up guys we are. To this end you tell me, you come into my home and you tell me that our light-hearted japery is uncalled for? And to be dismissed as counter to the point of discussion? This is an insult my friend, and I would seriously reconsider your tone if you wish to remain untouched by some sort of blunt instrument. You used to smile, Zrk2, you used to be someone I could trust, and this is how you do me? This is how you tell me that by jostling the funnybones of my compatriots in this leisurely manner, I am in fact somehow 'off topic; in a thread about our nice little community? This is not a pleasant arrangement.

glad to hear that you like the community, it is still the only forum I post on with any regularity.
this is a haven for people who seem to be both intelligent(or maybe I'm just stupid...) and fairly willing to answer questions about the game. which despite my many mods I've made for myself, I still have to ask questions which still feel like n00b questions.

I just spent awhile on another forum and wound up digging into a "funny pictures" thread. The constant posting of horrendously prejudiced pictures and the equally horrendously prejudiced responses from all the people there made me flee back here.
I am far more a lurker than a poster but man, it's so nice to have a good, positive place to lurk.
This community consistently amazes me for being top-notch.

Paul Robertson inspired, the artist behind 'kings of power 4 billion%', the film clip to 'do the whirlwind' by my favorite band Architecture in helsinki, and the graphics for 'Scott pilgrim Vs. the world: The game'. :D
So the man gets around, and despite he's sickening taste of humour, I like he's works.

Its esp. amazing that Toady and ThreeToe do not spend 12hrs/day on moderating the forums. They have to intervene like once a week, and this seems like miracle compared to, for example, my own communities where i have to keep dozens of mods active to maintain some order there.
And if you consider that many of active bay12 posters are not angels and come from places like 4chan and SA, it starts amazing even more.

You may have noticed that we have a nice, reletivly clean society here. Well sure, you have people like capn and myself walking around, even a few people who like elves, but for the most part it is a nice place. Well we didn't get here through what you would call 'ethical' means. You see, every jerk that turns up gets locked in the Armok I Forum, a forum dedicated to Dwarf Fortresses older brother. This dosn't sound so bad, however! In this forum lurks a terrible beast, who eats users, so the jerks mostly end up as monster chow.
Legend says that this monster, namd Kurtulmak, is currently sleeping, and will for another 300 years, untill the day when Salves to Armok 3 is born, and everything we know and love here is sucked into a vortex, so life can begin anew for this new installment of the Armok series.

You're getting your legends mixed up. Armok III has nothing to do with the great God of Blood, he's the third in a line of pansy Elves who dishonored the name of Armok by using it as their surname. You see, Armok lost a game of Uno to one of the Elven gods of vines or some shit and had to agree to give immunity to a single Elf from his divine retribution, as per a bet agreed upon before the game. The Elven vine god told the Elf Kifino Smilelover about the deal, and he and the other Elves of Crowdblossomed soiled the name of the God of Blood by changing Kifino's surname to Armok. The prancy Elves were pursued by an entire army of Dwarves for two more generations before an axe-wielding Dwarf by the name of Iton Bridgebars (leading a pack of bloodthirsty Dwarves) finally cornered Kifino Armok III at the Pass of Lashing and killed him in such a horrible way that it was too violent even for Dwarf Fortress and had to be censored.
