DF Suggestions / More command line flags
« on: February 29, 2016, 01:19:31 am »
I know this may seem trivial, but the utility - especially for Linux players - warrants the mention and the difficulty should be low enough that it can feasibly be implemented in a day.

The request: More command line flags for modifying Dwarf Fortress's initial run parameters, as follows (in GNU argp style ):
  • --display=[mode] For setting the display mode (i.e. 2D, 2DASYNC, or TEXT )
  • --d_init=[file] Select which d_init.txt file to parse.
  • --init=[file] Select which init.txt file to parse
  • --fps Show the fps counter
  • --sound Enable sound even if disabled in the init files.
  • --nosound Disable sound even if enabled in the init files.
  • --notemp Disable temperature calculations, even if enabled in the init files.
  • --skipintro Skip intro.
  • --forceintro Play intro even if disabled.
  • --rawdir=[directory] Select which directory to parse the raws from.
  • --tileset=[directory] this might be a little trickier, but basically the same concept as rawdir, select a directory containing art assets (tilesets) for dwarf fortress to use and an init file to parse from for special directions in its usage.*
  • --help Display a quick reference of these commands and the world generator command that's already implemented and exit.
  • --version print version information and exit.
  • etc. based on feed back from the community

*I'm aware that having a tileset init file might require more than a day and technically counts as a second suggestion, but please implement it anyway. I'd recommend having it called "index.txt" and being on the top level on  a tileset directory. The structure of that file is up to you, but having an [OVERIDE] tag per creature, caste and occupation that can cause it to pull from a specific file for that creature's graphics would be super great please and thanks. :)

The rationale:
While using static configuration files and editing them by hand is all well and good, sometimes players want different configurations right away. In particular the '--rawdir' flag would be a tremendous boon to players who like to use mods ( e.g. the Masterwork Mod ) but don't want to have different copies of dwarf fortress for different mods of the game. It's unlikely this would break the game as each save has its own set or raws to draw from, so '--rawdir' would only affect world gen. The tileset command would ease things for people who want to try different graphical assets for Dwarf Fortress or for the lovely people who develop the Lazy Newb Pack so that they don't have to modify the base raws.

Quote from: My idea for how an override file for selecting more specific graphics would work.
Code: [Select]
    [OVERRIDE:DWARF]
        [FILE:dwarf.png]
        [CASTE:MALE]
[OCCUPATION:FARMER:0:0] <- Where the two numbers are the tile x and y coordinates for the sprite to use based on tile-size settings in the init.
        [CASTE:FEMALE]
            [OCCUPATION:FARMER:1:0]
    [OVERRIDE_END]

If the tileset thing doesn't end up working out, at very least seeing the other options flags would be great. I'm also admittedly not very sure how Dwarf Fortress tilesets work, so if the tileset idea is redundant or just plain stupid, just disregard it.

Does anyone else support or have any suggestions on how to refine this?

DF Community Games & Stories / Bard Quest! The succession legend.
« on: February 20, 2016, 09:42:03 pm »
Now that DF Adventure mode is finally fleshed out to the point I'd hoped it'd be someday, I've been enjoying playing it for a few days now. I've failed to make a successful bard twice now: The first falling to stupidity, and the second to a sneak attack by a Midnight Man's Wife. Alas poor Nydhart Silverytongue, I had such high hopes. That gave me an idea, it's not entirely an original idea, but I think it's going to be a well received one.

Yes, it's a succession adventure! You have one week to train up a bard and
become famous. Writing songs and poems that will spread around the globe!

The rules are simple and few:
Quote
  • Sign up for a turn
  • When your turn is called, download the save and create your bard. Spec however you like! Warrior bards and pacifist bards will be judged only by their output!
  • Post your bard's name, hometown, and civilization before you begin!
  • Play for a real-life week or until your demise, whichever comes first.
  • If your bard does die, please post a screencapture of his death scene.
  • After a week, if your bard is alive. Retire in the nearest town!
  • Upload the save and link it for the next player
  • Tell the story of your bard!

This world was set with no historical discoveries by default, so everything is up to you to discover, record, and sing about! You are the historians and the entertainers of the world!

Roll To Dodge / Cheesistan Z: Roll to Normal
« on: November 06, 2015, 11:46:42 pm »
Totally Appropriate Announcement Music

At last! Witness the long-anticipated birth of the sequel to the legendary Roll to Dodge Cheesistan! Whether you're new or old, all are welcome to the inception!

Rules:
Quote from: Rules
  • Introduce yourself and any characters other than yourself you'll be using.
  • You may have unlimited characters, but only one action per character or two actions if only one character is making an action.
  • Moderate dialogue and roleplaying are allowed but any action must be rolled for.
  • From time to time there may be a large and powerful entity that will serve as a boss and be counted as a player. While not strictly required, players are encouraged to work together to defeat the boss.
  • Rolls will be based on a d8, rather than the standard d6 of most Roll-to-dodges.
Spoiler: Roll value translation (click to show/hide)
  • In order to keep better cohesion, Cheesistan Z will not feature rolling for modifiers on additional rolls, even though that was present in Cheesistan. The exception is for assist rolls, which will now only count for a range of -1 to +1.
  • An addendum to the above, no longer will players be allowed to acquire/utilize character powers to modify rolls. ( I'm looking at you Beirus. :P )
  • All stats are arbitrary and won't need to be kept track of, serving only narrative purposes. If you wish to do so for whatever reason, please keep it inside a spoiler.

Quote from: The Story So Far
The Micronation of Cheesistan and Surrounding Territories having been destabilized by Civil War, Revolution, and frequent invasion by super-powerful entities has been sucked into an alternate dimension in order to protect the Planet Earth. Now inside a mysterious and previously empty dimension, only MacGuffin Mumbo-Jumbo GM powers and the radiant energy of all the many super-beings keeps it alive. However, as the dimension was empty, it has begun sapping the power of all the super-beings, returning them to mere corporeal forms. A temporary treaty has been struck amongst the warring dignitaries, allowing peace to rebuild. Now it is time to reach your will out into the void and forge a new world to cohabitate, whether in peace or in war is up to you.

Quote from: Geography Overview
Arcadia:Capitol of the New Kingdom of Cheesistan.
Microphonia:Capitol of the Republic Kingdom of Cheesistan.
Trapisti Temple:A semi-autonomous, walled in complex housing a cult of transvestites.
Wolf Lake Winter Palace:Unofficial Capitol of the Old Kingdom of Cheesistan, inherited by the former staff of the previous royal family.

Should the factions play a part in this game, I'll add them to this spot in the op.

For now, first turn:

ROLL TO NORMAL: GENERATE A UNIVERSE[/u]

Quote from: Ringo, Sheriff of MurderMachines
The Void god, Anima Rytak had fallen, succumbing to the malicious and corrupting toxin of the voidspawn he had fought for so very long. He felt the madness flow into his scarred and numb mind. He didn't try to stop it, no he didn't try to stop it at all. He relished the relinquishment from determining friend from foe and as many thralls had he began to turn on all indiscriminately. With his tremendous power he slew many of what were once friend and foe. However the dwarves of MurderMachines were nonplussed and with scarcely a word began the epic battle with AnimaRytak, wielder of hammer of slade and sword of adamantine. Madness in their own comrade's eyes struck fear into even these, the near demonic dwarves who had already faced death so many times and come back feigning triumph, but in truth the losers in the end. So at the order of Sabertooth, whose job it was then to oversee and command the fortress as per the ancient laws of such affairs, the entirety of MurderMachines' military, including myself battled and slew the Void god. The proclaimed leader of that realm of oblivion was returned to it, perhaps never to return... Thus ends the epic and epoch of MurderMachines the Blood Citadel. Yet, the story does not end there. The next chapter has yet to be born and time will tell what new battle and blood will fall out amongst us all who have lived many lives through the sacrifice of these dwarves - I'm near certain that they are happy with this. Until that day we await here. That is another story. This is the story of what occurred after the "fall" and diminshing of MurderMachines. It began with myself and a strange mood I fell under.  As many dwarves before have been possessed by some force internal or external to begin constructions of legendary providence, so to did I feel the deep, dwarven urge as if it had always been imprinted upon my soul and I had been born a dwarf in my first life as in all subsequent. While some worked with stone, some worked metal, some wood, some bone to make the outpouring of their soul this was not enough for me and my deep thirst and ambition. I saw it, as if a vision, the mountains were my canvas! The sweat of dwarves my paint! As to dwarves all over the call has been made and heard I would answer with zeal my call to greatness! I would take this bloodstained hall of arcane riches and make it mine! While the souls of those who had been here since the beginning sought entrance and egress they too were called and felt the drum beat within their soul! No, not to war! To industry! To DWARVENDOM! HERE we make our paradise! HERE we make our destiny! Here we answer the call and carve our names not only into the legends of this world, but to all others were dwarf strikes anvil! Now hear my call, brethren! To arms! Stoke the forges with the blood of the earth itself and forge mechanisms for another great project the likes of those sung in worlds to come! We shall be here remembered and we shall live even the lowliest of us like the highest of kings in all the lands of this world! We shall bend water, stone, iron, magma, and nature all to our will and we shall carve our likeness into the mountains! Are you with me!? Stand up! Roar in our tongue what wonders we have wished for in our greatest suffering and let us quash all enemy and make the ultimate mountainhome. The final great mountainhome for adventurers to wonder upon in centuries to come! If I move on from this world, it shall only be in satisfaction that my work is complete and it will be only by your hands that it will be so. Do it for Raptor who has already fallen and been struck by the resistance of this mountain against us and caused you all to grumble against my rule. Know that I am not alone in this endeavour. Do it as much for yourselves as for me and as much for me as for yourselves. For then we will truly be among the greatest of all legends.

Co-sequel to the legendary MurderMachines, itself of the epic Deathgate saga!

See here for more information about the official third chapter, thus far known as Slaughterhelm, which will be a DF2015 fort. ( 2016 if the update is a bit late. )

Our TV tropes needs updating!

SERVER IP: 69.175.45.141

Hello and welcome to YggdrasilCraft, a brand-new server for Minecraft multiplayer. We look forward to your playing and enjoying out server. However. We're not yet ready to let you go on your epic adventure. So while we setup, what I've decided is this: we'll have a contest for players of Minecraft who like to build. You'll have two weeks from the Youtube announcement ( subscribe to my channel here ) to create an epic creation. At the end of two weeks, myself and a closed panel of judges will examine all your works and pick the ones we like best. These will be used and showcased in the spawn area for the main server and the builder will receive a Youtube shout-out with a plug to their channel, if they so wish. ( A Youtube channel is not required for this contest, all that's required is a Minecraft account and an internet connection. )

Please read the rules below. Any violation of these rules will not be tolerated. Mechanisms will be judged separately from constructions. For the purposes of these rules "mechanism" is defined as any component which has multiple states determined by time or a trigger, utilizes mechanisms or utilizes redstone components beyond redstone lamps. This includes redstone lamps which can be turned on or off and includes jukeboxes or note blocks. Just for clarity's sake, any component using the following is a mechanism: hoppers, droppers, dispensers, tripwires, minecarts, redstone comparators, levers, buttons, pressure plates, pistons, sticky pistons, redstone logic, or automated control of liquid flow.
Spoiler: Rules (click to show/hide)

There are three categories here, from which will be picked ten winners each. The top five constructions for each category will be implemented somewhere near the spawn area of the main server, with credit given to the creators. The categories are Solo building, Mechanisms, and Team building. Mechanisms, regardless of whether they were built in a team or alone will be judged in their category. If at any point you allow another player to assist you in anyway you must immediately credit them and mark your plot as a team entry, this includes mechanisms. By entering you agree to abide by the rules above. If for any reason you don't want to be judged for winner or have your construction used in the main server you must mark your plot with a sign saying non entry and construct a soul sand marking pillar. ( A marking pillar is a construction on the edge of your plot that quickly tells moderators and judges important things about your entry. If you've read the rules, you already know what the lapis lazuli and redstone block marking pillars stand for. Click below for examples and what they mean. )

Spoiler: Marking pillars (click to show/hide)

Instructions for playing:
Follow the rules and regulations above, join the server at the follwing IP: 69.175.45.141, type "/plotme auto" to automatically get your plot. This is all the building space you'll have to use. It's small, yes, but space is a premium in a spawn zone. :) Put down signs and marking pillars according to the rules and what category you wish to enter. If you need help, feel the rules are being broken, etc. private message a moderator. ( They are the people with red names. ) Do not ask for resources, the game's already in creative. Multiple entries are fine, but only one will get to be on the winner's list and only one will get to be on the honorable mentions. Please don't claim a ridiculous amount of plots though. Assume we use the default texture pack when you're building.

At the end of two weeks from the date of the Youtube announcement, the competition will end and the server will go dark for judging. After that the winners and honorable mentions will be featured on my Youtube channel and the top five entries in each category will be implemented in my server. Subscribe for updates on this contest and more!

Feel free to Let's Play this contest, just give a shoutout to me at Soitisisit and spread the word please. Enjoy building, everyone. :)

Is it time to write our congressmen? I think so. And if you're a Brit or an Aussie, write your parliment too. This thing looks like it could be bad news. Any thoughts or further information before we all go off and write letters? Has anyone else noticed this yet? If this is a duplicate thread, let me know... but if not, start talking! Please keep it courteous and peaceful though. I'll lock the thread if it gets out of control - I don't need any more strikes with the Toad but I feel very worried about this thing and felt like it needed to be told about.

Also, is there a politics subforum I can/should move this to?

DF Suggestions / A Simple Suggestion (I hope): [PRODUCES_POWER] tag.
« on: March 11, 2015, 05:26:56 pm »
The title pretty much sums it up, I'd like some tags to be added to the building reactions to allow those buildings (when properly connected) to produce a variable amount of power.
To wit:
  • [PRODUCES_POWER:X] The reaction causes the building to start building
  • [POWER_PRESSURE:X:Y:Z] An optional tag that takes in account breakdowns. At X ticks the building's description will contain "making an unsettling noise", at Y ticks it will be described as "shuddering violently" or "smoking" and at Z ticks it will go "critical" and deconstruct itself. (Preferably, in a violent dwarf injuring fashion comparable to a cave-in.)
  • [CEASE_POWER] ( Or [CUT_POWER]) The reaction stops its host building from producing power.
  • [DRAINS_PRESSURE:X:Y]Decreases the building's POWER_PRESSURE by X over Y ticks. 0 is instant.
  • [REQUIRES_MECHS] Reaction requires the building to contain at least one mechanism.

I shouldn't think that it'd be too much trouble... And it'll allow all kinds of cool generators. ( Imagine, if you will, a Steam generator, or a Dwarven generator. )

Using the Steam generator as an example. ( Didn't do it syntactically correct, because I'm in a bit of a hurry.

[REACTION:BOIL_WATER]
Takes water in a bucket and boils it into pressurized steam. Consumes fuel.
[PRODUCES_POWER:200] -Provides 200 power to connected mechanisms.
[POWER_PRESSURE:10000:15000:25000] - Goes critical at 25000 ticks.
[REQUIRES_MECHS]

[REACTION:VENT_STEAM]
[DRAINS_PRESSURE:1000:100] -Drains 1000 ticks worth of pressure over 100 ticks.

[REACTION:EXTINGUISH_BOILER]
[CEASE_POWER] - The generator stops producing power and building pressure.

Also, less for the sake of practicality and more for the sake of fun... This custom building tag:
[RELEASES_MAT_ON_CRITICAL:X:<STATE>:<TYPE>:<MATERIAL>] where X is the radius of the release from the center tile of the former building

For example [RELEASES_MAT_ON_CRITICAL:3:GAS:INORGANIC:WATER] would theoretically release a 3*3 cloud of steam on the break-down of the steam generator, centered on the former center tile of the former steam engine.

I put it in the wrong General Discussion thread! Sorry about that!

On a whim and fearing the ire of Microsoft for downloading Windows XP -  Even though... well I doubt they care anymore with the EoL announcement. So instead I went with an old development version of Windows, Windows Neptune. I'm a bit sketchy on the details, but it seems like it was developed between Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, with the working features being tossed into Windows XP or cut. If you're familiar with Neptune or would like to discuss another niche/obscure OS ( like Haiku or FreeBSD or some weird Mongolian Llama Linux Distro ) this is your thread.

Hoy. This is a thread to place things you'd like people to quote you for. Only original aphorisms, maxims, jokes, absurdisms, and general quotables.Like so:

"Gentlemen! There is that which is due to the Dead, due to your Fellows in Life, and due to the Unborn. That which is due to the Dead in memory, due to the Living in work, and due to the Unborn in art. Do well in all three." -anonymous writing as Capt. Ringo McClellan.

Other Games / Northern Lights - AberMUD - Telnet game.
« on: February 22, 2015, 10:15:56 pm »
Let's repopulate this, it's mildly fun! :)

For those of you with Telnet, "telnet aber.ludd.luth.se 6715". Those who don't, Google PuTTY.

It may be hard to find an open username, but soldier on! For those who don't know what a MUD is... First off, you're probably new here and welcome! Second, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask you to Google it too. ( I'm pretty tired and working on a tablet, you see. )

I'm on as Sakzul! Feel free to discuss the game here!

Important Warning!!! The telnet protocol has NO encryption, do not exchange personal information and use a unique password. Just because it's probable noone is listening, doesn't mean that it's guaranteed.

DF Community Games & Stories / MurderMachines's Successor
« on: February 20, 2015, 03:14:21 pm »
An open poll to see who gets to start the thread and make the fort to succeed MurderMachines in the Deathgate Saga! The poll will close in 21 days, please don't tell who you voted for until after that. This poll is open to all voters, but it's highly recommended you brush up on the history of both forts first!

Yes, you may vote for yourself.

So! The real question must be... Who is this mystery woman? and What happens next?

(( Also, super sorry about the images being huge, I'll have to find a way to fix that later. ))

DF General Discussion / Dwarven Linguistics Core Project
« on: January 23, 2015, 02:37:50 pm »
Okay, in my desire to compose Dwarven Epics in actual Dwarven, relaying tales of the many forts I ( and others ) doom to fiery oblivion, I found myself in need of some language elements that may not be currently expounded upon. That is why I am founding this community project, which I will submit my own works to. The goal is to create a formal, standardized Dwarven for use by players, built on and incorporating both the extensive and existing Dwarven vocabulary, real-world linguistics, fan hypotheses and consensus, and (if possible) input from Toady and ThreeToe. ( ThreeToe especially given his background. ) Hopefully, all of this will go on to develop a fully functional fantasy language that will (eventually) be incorporated in the game. I speculate that ToadyOne and ThreeToe may already have some ideas in mind for doing this and as their fans, we should help offload the work so that they can focus on more immediate issues. That said, do keep in mind that Dwarf Fortress is still a game and while I want to treat this academically, including debates over the best or "most accurate" way to enact something, I don't want trolling or to start a flame war, or to split the fanbase. I don't expect this to be an issue, but if it is I may have to lock the thread.

Here are some current resources about the Dwarven language:

http://dflangs.wikidot.com/wiki:languages
http://dflangs.wikidot.com/wiki:alphabets#Dwarven
http://pastebin.com/QhSAEhQc

There will eventually be "official documents" posted to the dffd, chronicling the current versions of syntax, grammar, conjugation, and punctuation ( if any ) rules. Hopefully in a "for dummies" fashion, as I can see this project getting as hopelessly complex as the game itself. Also, there might come a point in which a list of "universal/multiversal" Dwarven proverbs and idioms is also available, but that's a low priority.

I understand something like this is probably already, or had been already, in existence. If so, all the better, please PM me about merging it into this thread.

What I have thought of so far:
-Conjugation rules for plurals when not given in the dictionary, of which I only have one potential rule.
-A method to use a known as an adjective with a suffix, pretty much the same as English.
-Separating conjugations into categories based on the end sound of the word being modified. ( For example, if the word ends in a consonant or vowel, if the last vowel was long or short, broad or slender, etc. )

What is especially needed:
-Sentence syntax structure.
-Punctuation rules, if we all agree or Toady/Three Toe states that Dwarves use punctuation. ( Probably yes. )
-More sophisticated pronunciation guides, ones that take into account stressed syllables, intonation, and how exactly the sounds are grouped in each syllable of the existing words. ( For example, the Dwarven word for abbey is "kulet" is that "ku-let" or "kul-et" and is which syllable is more prominent. Yadda-yadda-yadda. )

What I'd like to see:
-Speculation on the most likely meter of Dwarven poetry, including for different types of poems.
-Speculation on the difference(s) between Dwarven poems and prose.
-Some sort of symbolic number system unique to the Dwarves. ( Purely for aesthetic purposes, learning a new number system to play the game would be insane. ) Feel free to experiment with different number bases! :P
-At least one universal Dwarven axiom.
-Maybe some more words?

What we need to look out for:
-Changes in the official Dwarven dictionary.
-ToadyOne's comments.

If you know or become aware of anything like that please bring it up on this thread!

So, have at it! I look forward to the results.
