Title: Solar Graveyard - Starlight
Post by: NJW2000 on June 16, 2021, 05:17:51 pm
SOLAR GRAVEYARD

You don't really know how you're going to do this.

You look down at the deck of the voidship, at the stars, or across at the friends you'll be leaving behind. Mags, the oldest and wisest inhabitant of the Needle, tells a tale you already know by heart.

Once, there were many worlds. Entire universes, enclosed since the start of time, each with its own planets, its own laws, its own peoples, places and magics. Impregnable walls of prima materia surrounded the worlds, separating them and keeping them from the dark waters of the primordial Chasm.

Then the Reivers came. Collossal beings of unknown intent and indescribable might, they tore down the barriers between the worlds, ripping universes open to plunder the contents. They ransacked the multiverse, leaving the punctured realities spilling out into the Chasm and one another. From one they might steal entire planets, stars, great swathes of space, taking from the next only a single flower, a spider's web, a blade of grass. For years, they stood in the swirling mass of their plunder, assembling the great incomprehensible artifact from fragments of countless worlds. Whatever they created, they took it with them when they left.

In the wake of the Reivers, the inhabitants of countless universes were thrust together without warning. Wars erupted. Crusades were undertaken. Fanatical cults swept the tangled stars, and great beasts from the wilds of space ran amok through the remains of galaxies. Worlds clashed, empires crumbled, entire civilisations collapsed. The sun-eater forges of the Tungsten Heresiarch, the endless hives of the Iserop Collective, even the living planets of the Lifeshapers, all lost in the chaos. And finally, the strange and terrible creatures of the Chasm emerged, to hunt the beings of light and matter and flesh.

A dwindling number of survivors inhabit the wreckage of space, eking out a precarious existence in the ruins of the worlds. This is where you come in.

Spoiler: What is this? (click to show/hide)

A voidship is a vessel built to traverse what remains of space, a gigantic patchwork of oceans, ether, vacuum and murk, slowly sinking into the primordial Chasm, littered with the endless debris of dead worlds. Your ship is new, created by the folk of the Needle, a heavily settled sliver of iron lying in the remains of a destroyed planet. And, until now, your home.

You and four others stand aboard the voidship, the folk of the Needle watching you depart. Your sacred and vital mission is to create a new world.

You don't really know how you're going to do this.

Name: Lucca Abraham, Or in his own tongue, “Quaster”

Nature: Lucca is a large floating squid-like creature with a bulbous body. His species are called Xelqu. His hobbies are practicing psionic power and studying gene modification.

World of origin: Xecol, The Xelqu’s homeworld is a swampy ocean filled with giant egg-like hives. The Xelqu have been around for a very long time and had learned to open a slight crack in the barriers, Allowing them to travel between worlds.

Because of this, They would constantly explore and travel the galaxy in giant epoch-spanning mass-migrations before the Reivers came. As masters of genetic and psionic manipulations, they constantly improved themselves and remade the worlds they visited. They did this so often they began to think of themselves as gods, Despite being no such thing.

Then, One day, The Reivers came and tore open their universal barrier, The Xelqu were enraged when the Reivers came and took all their resources and killed thousands of their people.

Specialties: Lucca is astonishingly good at psionic power and using that to manipulate genes to mutate, Improve or create. As is all of his people.

Contribution to ship: A power source. The heart of a elder Xelqu that is overflowing with psionic power and is slightly sentient, It was given to Lucca as a present for 14278th birthday.

I would appreciate it if you read the world origin, I think I did really good. :)

Looks like we have exactly five here, so anyone further sheets are going in the waitlist. We'll start tomorrow.

I would appreciate it if you read the world origin, I think I did really good. :)
I'll be reading all of the character sheets, don't worry. I enjoyed reading your world origin.

By the by, as things stand, your character will be extremely good at psionic gene-editing, but merely ok at using their abilities for larger tasks like lifting heavy objects. I think, for the purposes of this RTD, moving big things with one's mind and editing genes are two different skills.

If you'd like to specialise in both of them, we can change it to that, but you'll just be excellent rather than astonishingly good.

Also, Is Xecol still around? Or did it get destroyed? Just out of curiosity.

SETTING OUT

After one last look at your former home, the doors close, and you're alone on the ship.

Have you ever held a slice of orange, and teased away a single cell? That's what the void ship looks like: a long, almost organic grey metal body, one end tapering to a heavily armoured point, the other abruptly ending in a flat face, as if cut away by a giant knife. The five of you are assembled in the bridge, near the pointed end, gazing out from heavily reinforced windows. A young woman, a suited man wearing shades despite the dim blue on-board lights, a green-skinned metal creature stand beside a floating cephalopod, a blue-black blade the length of a man resting in a mechanical scabbard behind them, ready to be shunted to the very tip of the vessel if chasm traversal becomes necessary. It's a strange group.

Lucca's tentacles drift across the controls, and the ship's engine hums into life, the heart of an ancient Xelqu elder, brimming with psionic energy. Psionic ships are quiet: there's no exhaust, no propellors turning, just smooth movement away from the Needle. The voidship begins to weave between the huge chunks of solid iron that used to make up the core of the planet, frozen midway through some catastrophic planetary explosion. Planets are pretty big, so it'll take a while to get to the exterior.

You have some free time on board the ship.

(One addition.  Suzy has a small floating cartoony-looking kitten over her shoulder.  It's currently wearing a space captain's hat.  This is the avatar of the microorganism colony.)

"A bit scared.. but not so bad.  I mean, just last month I set a whole bay full of harvested hydroponic lettuce on fire while trying to dry it out.  It'll be nice to be able to use my powers out here in the void, instead of having to keep everything locked up inside.  There were getting to be a few too many incidents, and you can't hide anything on the base.. when something happens everyone knows yesterday!"

"Also, it isn't forever.  Nothing's saying I can't go back and visit sometime!"

"Though.. the bigger question is what do we do now?  A whole universe is just so big.  Where do you start with trying to make one?"

After conversation, Suzy is also going to tour the ship.  If the sword wishes, Suzy will carry it.

"Well well, it would seem that we're off. How do you feel, leaving your homes?"

Lucca raises a tentacle almost in disbelief that she is talking without permission, Before remembering he is not at his homeworld, He is not a god, She is not his servant, His servants are gone and his parents are dead. “I have nothing left, So I feel nothing.” After that bit of optimism, Lucca decides to inspect the Xelqu heart.

Steve stops walking away freezes for a second then turns around "Oh? What do you know about choice? Your nothing but a sword incapable of even moving without assistance from a outside force. Doomed to the whims of whoever wields you until your inevitably lost or destroyed. So tell me why does the thing here most incapable of choice themselves have anything to say about my opportunities at having a choice?"

Edit: (Also does Suzy have free will? I notice you switch between talking about "Suzy" and Suzy alot and im not 100% sure if "Suzy" is controlling Suzy or what's up with that)

(Suzy has free will.  I'll name the avatar something else, (leaning towards Timo) which will speak for the colony, when it's relevant.  I would expect that the colony can play some games with biochemistry which could cause some mood swings.  It's not full control, but it's more than a little influence.)

Steve looks noticeably irritated "Tell me what choice do you have now? What "choice" would you have if I decided to throw you out of this ship right now? I'm aware that people have choices to a degree but there are some things that are beyond choice. You think I had a choice in what my future held? You think I had a choice in watching my father die? YOU THINK I HAD A CHOICE IN WATCHING MY PLANET AND EVERYTHING I WORKED FOR AND KNEW GET DESTROYED?" Steve takes a deep breath I know it may be hard for you to understand from your limited point of view but some things are beyond choice. Steve walks away

One who held me was a bear, and we came across a patch of green stuff, nasty, corrosive. Thought it would only be a wall of the stuff and we'd get to the other side, turns it it was a moon. “No, No no, It is definitely worth it to pick a fight, Once it’s dead, Think of all the genes to be collected and plundered, Imagine having the vitality and strength of that bear while still keeping your normal appearance, And that’s only the beginning of what can be done.” Lucca develops into a manic rambling explanation.

"Yeah?  Hey Suzy, this sword thinks you can't carry it.  You feeling up for it?"

Suzy smiles a bit.  "Sure, lets see how this goes"

..at that, she walks up and picks up the two meter long sword.  It's tricky for her to actually draw it, the sword being much longer than she is tall, but there's no apparently difficulty holding it in two hands.

..as she tries to swing it, though, it's clearly somewhat awkward for her, being too long, heavy enough to make balancing hard, and the hilt is too large for her hands.  She can certainly hold it, however.. something abnormal going on there.

"So what do you have to say about that?"

Check what's in my box. It's never not a good time for that!
5

You open the box, and... oho. Inside is a dozen primitive drones, small metal spheres, carrying simple scanners made to scan large bodies of iron for impurities. They seem to be calibrated to pick up on exotic or rare metals and transmit a rough location back to the ship.

You might find something interesting by sending them on ahead, and quickly extract the metals when you passed by. On the other hand, telling them to spread out through the planet could have better results, but might involve persuading everyone to go on a time-consuming detour to actually reach the stuff.

Steve starts searching the ship for secrets.

4

No secrets as such, but Steve does find something he wasn't aware of. As well as defensive layers of reinforced metal separating the storage rooms at the back end of the ship from the large pod bay doors, there's a layer between the front of the ship and the rest. On one side of it is the engine room, the bridge, Varisdel's box and the workshop, and on the other is everything else.

This front part of the ship appears to be detachable, so in an emergency you could turn into a much smaller vehicle shaped like an inverted teardrop, and depart at immense speed, leaving most of the ship behind.

Lucca decides to inspect the Xelqu heart.
The Xelqu heart is brimming with power, strong and healthy despite the countless millenia since its owner passed from this world. The giant blue organ floats in the centre of the engine room, pipes of blackened iron providing it with a steady drip of nutrient gruel from the vats in the hold. It glows a little brighter as you enter, the tiny mind recognising a member of its own species. It's enough to make one feel a little less alone.

After conversation, Suzy is also going to tour the ship.  If the sword wishes, Suzy will carry it.
You make a rough circuit of the ship, holding the greatsword a little awkwardly even in two hands until you rest the flat of the blade on your shoulder. The weapon is cold, but not unpleasantly so. You can feel the vibrations in your collarbone as it talks.

First is the bridge, the wide windows looking out into the core of a dead planet, huge iron shutters ready to sweep across them at the first sign of danger. You avoid the engine room, as the Xelqu is in there with the weird psionic organ and is either performing essential diagnostics or having a bit of a moment, and pass through the crew's quarters. Next you pass the carefully customised voidsuits, and through the indoor garden that is the ship's biological regulation system, carefully created by Lucca's psionic tinkering, bizarre fungi and flowers carrying out reactions far too specialised for mere chemistry to handle. You avoid the Titan's dedicated storage chamber. Seeing that creature isn't really a "stroll" sort of experience.

You pass through the stocks of nutrient gruel sloshing in the hold, and then you're among the four pods at the back of the ship. Turning around, you pass through Lucca's gene banks, carrying every single biological blueprint he's managed to barter, beg or borrow since the collapse of the worlds. Next is medical as you work your way back to the front of the ship, then the ship's workshop, and finally the bridge again.

Varisdel senses a change in the huge shards of metal surrounding the voidship, and even the others can detect a slight shift in the shapes and colours on display. Soon you'll reach the jagged exterior of this exploded planet, and be able to get properly underway.

There are rumours of some kind of settlement on the exposed surface of the shattered globe, as well as something living outside it, large and dangerous enough to afford the inhabitants of the interior an unusual degree of tranquility. Which might make leaving interesting.

"Sure.. I think I saw some hard stuff in the workshop."

Timo speaks up. "Don't forget your powers too, Suzy.  Maybe you can jazz up breakfast a bit, turn it into something tasty."

Lets try out my powers.  Gather a bowl of nutritious gruel and see if I can turn it into real Nutriwheat! gruel.  Maybe I can even make the protein flavoring a bit more jazzed up, like a bit of real mustard!

Then, after eating, lets head over to the workshop and find a nice target to try out the sword on.  Stab!

Same with her own powers.  Lets try all three.  Lasers, heat rays, and electricity, one at a time.

Varisdel walks into the main area, with his arms full of spherical drones. A few are slipping his grip and bouncing on the ship's floor.
Look, drones! They scan iron stuff for exotic and rare metals. He looks excited.
How long you all interested in staying around here? Because we could send them ahead and grab stuff drive-by, or we could take the time to search the whole planet.

STARLIGHT

You take a bowful of nutritious gruel from the tanks at the back of the ship, and attempt to transform it into something with a different structure.

2

A few minutes later, the gruel is a thin layer of carbon adhering to what remains of the bowl. Might have projected a bit too much heat there.

You move on to combat testing. You suit up, your voidsuit specially modified to allow energy projection, and carry out a series of worn iron target dummies, and stand on the surface of the ship, boots easily gripping the rough surface, tossing them into the wide spaces between chunks of planetary core and watching them drift slowly downwrds. Couldn't exactly give your powers free reign back on the Needle but out here it shouldn't really matter.

Your inital lasers are powerful enough to melt iron, leaving incandescent orange and white patches, even gaping holes in the metal when you manage to hit with a sustained burst. The lasers are however hard to aim, especially when the targets tumble erratically about, and you often miss, the laser carving dull red lines of hot metal across the chunks of iron floating around the ship.

Waves of heat affect much larger areas, but aren't strong enough to do anything to the metal dummies, only burning off a couple of straps and bits of string still attached. Electricity generally doesn't hit, instead crackling harmlessly about the gauntlets of your suit, once or twice arcing down your suit to the tough sides of the voidship. Not enough atmosphere out here to throw lightning.

The Stride Blade is something else entirely. You secure the last two of targets, take the long handle of the sword in two hands, and move it back awkwardly, the blade pointing behind you, ready to take an experimental swing. Even for someone with your improved physique, greatswords are not easy to use.

You move the sword in an arc, swinging it almost horizontally at the level of yours shoulders, a blow capable of decapitating an ordinary human. The first dummy's crude head tumbles away into the void, the stride blade cutting through the thick iron with ease. As you finish your swing, the blade doesn't slow down but starts to move faster, leaping in your grip to point at the other target and accelerating towards it. In an instant, you're pulled towards the dummy and then through it, finishing the motion on one knee with your right arm extended, the sword pointed straight ahead of you, perfectly still. Looking back, the target has been torn in half, the head and most of the torso gone, the legs and sides swaying independently. The whole process took less than a second.

"Hmm well isn't that interesting..."

Steve attempts to figure out how to activate the thing that detaches the front of the ship... just in case

5

After spending some time studying the controls, you deduce that it's a pretty simple sequence of inputs, something you could do with only two limbs. Nice! These controls are a lot simpler than they look.

“Thanks.” Lucca takes some of Steve’s blood and Analyze’s it and checks if he can make some “Modifications”.
You focus your psionic intuition on Steve's blood sample, and consider his genetic code. It all looks like a pretty standard boring humanoid, the kind of uninteresting mess you get in societies that have advanced technologically past natural selection but haven't introduced heavy genetic modification yet. So... a lot to improve on.

It would be quite easy to write in a few large-scale changes and make him slowly become a bit stronger, faster, or sturdier. It would also be a fairly simple matter to make his cells a bit more suited to the harsher environments he might be facing, a bit more disease-resistant, better at storing energy, that sort of thing. You could start those modifications at once, if you like. It wouldn't be as much as the sustained changes someone or something has been making to Suzy's body, but it would be worth doing.

Sadly, you can't see any obvious paths to more interesting mods: no latent telepathy in his genetic code, no ancient predator genes to make him a were-creature, no genetic switches to flip and make him grow armour plating or poison sacs. Anything like that you're going to have to use your own store of weird genes and implant stuff, a much more involved process.

(I was mainly waiting to see if anybody else intended to make requests regarding the drones. Evidently, no.)

Varisdel sends a few drones immediately ahead, while having the rest scan - but not harvest - the planet as a whole.
You release the drones from one of the airlocks, watching as the machines scatter. A handful turn and push ahead of the ship, scanning the areas immediately above it. The rest fan out across the exploded core of the planet, controlling their course with short, economical bursts of fuel. It will be a while before those are back within range.

The drones you sent ahead reveal a vein of Obdurite, a lesser cousin to adamantine, very hard and light, quite easy to work. The voidships stops briefly for you to harvest it from the huge chunks of mantle you're now passing through. Extracting the metal from the ore is easy enough, and by the end you're left with five bars. You could probably barter it for something useful or keep it around for repairs, new devices, etc.

After several hours more, the ship reaches a long gap in the floating chunks of planetary core, stars visible ahead. It picks up speed and traverses hundreds of kilometres in a few hours, moving straight towards open space, and only slowing once you reach the outskirts of the shattered crust. The lights of a settlement on what used to be the surface of the planet are visible a few hundred miles away, while open space beckons just above. Even without an atmosphere, the sight of dawn over the broken world is spectacular, the sun rising on huge overturned mountains, glinting on jagged slabs of rock and metal strung out like beads in space.

As you look out of the bridge windows, Suzy catches a glimpse of something above you. It's barely visible, just a shifting region of the sky where the stars are a little dimmer, the darkness between them a little lighter. It loops and darts across the void above you, a long outline against the blackness, long, twisting and incredibly large. It's not something any of you recognise: Varisdel is pretty sure it's not mechanical, the Stride Blade knows it isn't a Chasm creature, and Lucca can't remember his people creating something like this. Perhaps this is the thing that protects the remains of this planet.

(..are you poking the elder god?)

"This is a really, really nice sword."

"Yes it is", speaks Timo, sounding his voice inside Suzy's helmet.

"Hmm.. we probably should get in some more practice hitting targets.  We didn't really have the distance indoors.  And I think we should work on coordination.", says Timo.  "Does that mean..?" responds Suzy.

"Yes, it means more dance training!  And maybe a few more things.  Like we should make you a staff to help aim, and maybe we can make a better voidsuit, one more easy to move in."  Timo continues.

After re-entering, Suzy tries to chat with each crewmember separately.

Steve/Fluffe9911.

"Hey, Steve, do you have any opinions on uniforms?  I see you're wearing a fancy suit..

..anyway,  I'm going to try and make uniforms for us all, and would like any advice you have on designs and what not.  You could come help me too, maybe?  At the least, could you tell me what colour you want, and what kinda logo would represent you."

Glass/Varisdel.

"Hey, Varisdel, would you like a uniform?  I'm just going to make some new clothing to replace these rags I've got, and wondering if you're interested too.  If you do want, let me know what colour and what kind of logo you want on it."

"How'd the prospecting go?"

Lucca/Knightwing64

With Lucca, the floating kitty Timo does the speaking.

"Hey, we need to talk.  Suzy wants to make a uniform for you, but we also need to talk about your genemodding thing.  I'd like to run an experiment to find out if it's safe to combine with Suzy's magic."

Stride Blade/Egan_BW

"Would you mind if I put some cloth on your scabbard?  I'm making uniforms for the others, and would like to add something for you, too.  If you're up for it, let me know what colour you want, and if you want a logo or something on it to represent you."

Steve looks awestruck staring at the creature above him it takes Suzy questioning him to snap him out of it
""Hey, Steve, do you have any opinions on uniforms?  I see you're wearing a fancy suit..
"Oh I apologize for my hesitation was a bit distracted looking at that... thing. Anyway I for one think uniforms are a necessity in situations where showing professionalism and class are required which back home was almost all the time. As for if I got to wear a suit or not well I'll let my current attire speak for that. "
..anyway,  I'm going to try and make uniforms for us all, and would like any advice you have on designs and what not.  You could come help me too, maybe?  At the least, could you tell me what colour you want, and what kinda logo would represent you."
"I'm afraid I have no skill when it comes to manufacturing clothing that's the laborer's job after all. As for design though I always had a soft spot for atlantis blue used to have a suit that color I would wear to festivities. As for logos ill let you decide but don't make it any larger than a pin unless you plan on paying me to wear it or I might as well be off to Clown College™.  "

"Now I answered your questions I'm going to see if this ship has some type of database system or something useful akin to that."

After all the talking is over with see if there is any type of database on the ship that includes documentation on things like that massive creature.

Plus, It was stated to be protecting the remains of the planet, Which indicates that at the very least, It could be reasoned with. Two: it knows more of the planet then we do and can be a good guide. "Hey, Varisdel, would you like a uniform?  I'm just going to make some new clothing to replace these rags I've got, and wondering if you're interested too.  If you do want, let me know what colour and what kind of logo you want on it."

"How'd the prospecting go?"
Varisdel looks at Suzy a bit blankly when asked about uniforms, before apparently processing the query and snapping back into focus.
How about dark red and brown? And a couple of gears for the logo. Don't put an upper-left sleeve on it, though, I want that arm unrestricted. He waves around the liquid metal limb, contorting it into a variety of unusual shapes, as if to prove a point.
And, ah, to be honest I don't think I'd wear it much. I like my outfit. He gestures at his clothes, obviously made from similar materials to those worn by many space-faring mechanics, but also clearly made to look like the garb of a medieval blacksmith, only betraying the style with a pair of brass(-looking) goggles. You'd judge him as being rather attached to the look. But if we ever need to make ourselves look official or whatever, I promise I'd wear it.

And the prospecting's going well! Found some Obdurite, five bars worth! He holds one of the pieces up to show it off; like adamantine, it's blue in color, though it's darker and less saturated than its greater cousin. I think it'd make for a good drilltip or chainblade if we ever need those. And that's just what we've found now! I bet there'll be even more stuff on the planet proper.

They seem like they're about to turn back to their study of the new metal before clearly having an idea, and turning back to Suzy. Hey, do you know if Lucca still wanted... ah, what was it again? Biosamples? They clearly don't actually remember the purpose, but suddenly, a sliver of pale green skin is proffered in a liquid metal hand; it looks more like plastic than skin, barely bending under gravity's pull and slightly shiny. Could you bring this to them?
Beads of what seem to be liquid bronze start appearing where Varisdel scraped the skin off his lower-right arm. He doesn't appear to register that what he just did is supposed to hurt.

"I have a power that I can use to change things.. usually basic things like cloth to other cloth.  If I don't screw up and set something on fire.  I've never had anything so grand to try and work on, so I think I'll just play around with it a bit.  Maybe a staff, or adding armour plating to my uniform."

"I might even try to change what it is, make it into an even better metal.  But that's hard.  Much harder than just reshaping it.  Might set something on fire if I try that.  But.. if it works, I might have a bar of something really special."

Upgrade the Obdurite into Adamantite, as Varisdel suggests.

Lets try to make those uniforms for everyone (including the squid, although squid gets a generic 'tentacle beast in circle' icon, and a jet black colour.  Use my powers to reshape (and recolour) cloth items, looking for raw materials in storage.  Try to make them tough and fireproof, while still allowing for easy movement.  Varisdel gets black and red, with gears, Steve gets no logo and the blue text colour, and the sword gets a scabbard-wrap that's sunny yellow and has an icon of a spear, as sword is stabby.

Suzy's will be pink, and will have an icon of a magic wand, shooting sparks..  Timo will wear an imitation of the uniform, in gray, with the same icon.

Lucca fanboys at the creature then very visibly forces himself to get back to Steve’s dna. He adds a few modifications, Increased strength and toughness, Speed and etc. After doing this, Lucca sends out a psionic signal to the creature, Trying to communicate.

You finish looking over Steve's genome, spend a few seconds focusing, and make some changes. Millions of microscopic pushes, changing the DNA in a million cells, the same tiny edit every time. Even among the races gifted with psionics, this is an extraordinary ability, requiring unparalleled precision and an intuitive sense of the stuff of life. You shift the codes for muscle cells to be bigger, greedier, more numerous, tell motor neurons to grow longer and fire faster, marrow to thicken its environment with excess calcium. It'll take a few days to start to see changes if you do implement these in his body, but he'll have faster reflexes, harder bones, and the strength to at least keep up with the rest of the crew.

This done, you turn your attention to the great being swimming through the skies above you, shouting a psionic greeting. The creature responds, its voice steady and calm, unstrained with the effort of reaching across thousands of miles of intervening space.

"Hello, small one. I am Ral, the great serpent, and I too once lived in the heart of this world."

The words are unhurried, not threatening, spoken with gentle amusement even. It moves away over the jagged horizon before you can reply, untouched by the light of the dawn.

After all the talking is over with see if there is any type of database on the ship that includes documentation on things like that massive creature.

The bridge has digital archives, but searching through them doesn't yield any immediate insight into the creature itself. Beings that huge occur rarely in nature, and the thing you saw definitely wasn't small. You do establish that creatures that large tend to either be created and maintained by some kind of advanced technology or magic, or were part of the fundamental laws of a world. You scroll through the slow, massive vessels grown by the Xelqu, the awful titans created when the Lifeshapers were provoked to war, or the mechanical dragons made by the Loians, but you can't see why any of these things would be circling a dying planet with their makers nowhere to be found. Perhaps you'd do better to look through myths and legends.

And there it is. Ral, the world serpent. A snake the size of a continent, spoken of in the old songs of this place, sleeping in the fiery core of the planet, prophesied to devour the world in the end of days.

Odd. You're pretty sure the end of days already came.

5

Changing the stuff something is made out of is indeed hard. But, apparently not too hard for someone.

You hug the bar to your torso - increasing the surface area in contact with something can help with the transformation process. You can feel it heating up and expanding slightly as the changes take place over almost an hour. Timo settles down in front of you, tucking his paws underneath him and focusing on the transformation.

When you're done, you end up with a different metal, less dense, and a much lighter shade of blue. It has a faint glow, barely perceptible in the harsh light of the workshop, but there nonetheless. It sings slightly as you put it down on the workbench.

Even Varisdel can't contain a moment of shock: this is pure adamantine.

Making adamantine from Obdurite is quite draining, and you only manage to make one uniform before the ship arrives at the settlement. Still, little Timo looks just darling in it.

Sure.
Varisdel focuses on the bar, watching to try and see if he can tell anything about what Suzy does to it.
Unseen, his soul seems to reach out to the piece of metal.
5

Varisdel's soul is an unusual one. It is a fundamental tenet of the soul arts that an intangible sympathy exists between beings with souls of similar composition. The meaning and nature of this sympathy is much debated among scholars, the discussion complicated by the lack of understanding of exactly what souls are generally composed of. In the freakish case of Varisdel, however, there is no particular mystery as to what his soul is made up of: it's simply some metals. The mystery lies in how reality allows such a material peg to fit in such a metaphysical hole, rather than scrumpling up the mistake into a singularity or tearing it into a mess of subatomic particles.

Nonetheless, Varisdel does undeniably have such a soul, granting him a certain affinity for metals. This comes at the cost of soul-based arts such as most forms of magic, but is perhaps the more valuable for its rarity.

He observes the metal as Suzy works it. He senses tiny changes in the outer layers, microscopic spots of heat that cool and dissipate almost immediately. Tiny bubbles of air are forced through the momentarily soft areas created, and the process repeats until the entire bar is riddled with air. Then pinpricks of even more intense heat are created, the Obdurite oxidising and changing, binding with chemicals in the air at thousands of degrees, until the baser metal turns into adamantine.

It's roughly how you'd go about making adamantine from Obdurite really, except in miniature. Which isn't surprising, as you'd need a forge as hot as a sun and almost perfect control over the airflow to actually make this work under normal circumstances. Doing it in tiny increments on the microscopic scale makes a lot of sense... if you can get hold of a million tiny forges and even tinier blacksmiths. Apparently Suzy can.

The Stride Blade has a special mount at the front of the ship, in case at any point you find yourselves traversing the awful Chasm it came from, but for now it simply asks the Xelqu heart in the engine to take you to the settlement. The journey lasts a couple of hours.

The surface settlement is nestled in a mostly intact range of mountains, air apparently held in place by huge charms and runes carved into rock. The land around is dry and scrubby, but not dead as the chunks of broken planetary surface floating all around. The light you saw before dawn broke was some kind of lighthouse or beacon floating high above the city itself, spinning slowly, useless in the bright sunlight. So they have some visitors.

You land a little way from the main group of buildings, rough sandstone structures, many apparently carved from pure rock. Coming down smoothly and silently, you notice a few other flying crafts scattered through the mountains, some on the roofs of buildings, some by small villages, some apparently in the middle of nowhere. A crowd gathers at a distance to gawk at your unusual vessel. The people here look pretty similar to inhabitants of the Needle, refugees from all across the many universes, all sorts of shapes but nobody too threatening. Some seem here to beg, some to trade, but most just to have a look at you.

"This Adamantite stuff is pretty rough.  That took a lot out of me.
It's been a long time since I was tired like this."  Suzy then wipes her brow with a shop rag.

Timo then jumps in.
"Yeah, that's quite the job there, Suzy.  Well done.  I think you've got the trick of it, so it should be a bit easier next time."

The kitten then floats around and looks at Suzy.

"I think we could manage one a day, if that's okay with both of you."

"..and if we do that, there'll be the matter of payment."  The cat says, grinning.  "I think the first and last bar of adamantite would be fair."

"That's the giant serpent, right?  That does sound good.."

(Edited my orders to do that.)

(If you can't think of anything, here's my recommendations..

Lucca, keep talking to giant snake.  Find out if it's okay for us to leave, and maybe some stuff about the area around here.  Any places to check out?  Watch out for?  Both?

Varisdel, maybe find some stuff to buy.  The first thing that stands out to me is that our ship isn't very well armed or protected.  Maybe someone has some components for a missile system here, or shield bits or whatever that we could use.  Missiles sound good because we should be able to make more missiles, and they can be loaded with stuff like biological weapons, either toxins or Boarding Dragons, or just explosives.

As for the Stride Blade, maybe just go with someone?  Suzy's willing to carry you, but the others might need the protection more.)

Varisdel is going to go into town or whatever it is and purchase A. some defense systems (even if used or outright broken) and B. a bunch of spare parts and raw materials. If there's any 3D printers or CNC machines or whatever, get those instead of spare parts, they're more generally useful.
The defense systems don't need to be that great, they just need to be able to be worked off of. Tinkering can fix all problems forever. Yes, that's definitely the case.

Steve heads out to the settlement to scout out how things are going at the place and see what they got.
You take a dusty track into the settlement, past dozens of small buildings and into the shade of one of the huge sandstone buildings at the centre of town. They look like temples, but there's no sign of any religious practices: people wander in and out, sometimes carrying bundles of goods or leading animals, as if the buildings are used for storage or accommodation.

The settlement is doing reasonably. There are small patches of farmland, even the odd animal grazing. The people here are scruffy but look reasonably well fed. There isn't much purposeful movement. Apart from a few farmers, shopkeepers, and day labourers, nobody seems to be doing much here. People are selling the usual dross: food, clothing, farm animals. One is selling maps of the planet's surface, and highly dubious sketches of the surrounding void, but apart from that there aren't many interesting items on sale.

You note that the majority of the inhabitants seem to be from this planet, olive-skinned humanoids, although there are many refugees from across the worlds mixed in among them.

There don't seem to be any obvious leaders here.

I'm up for hitting the town.  Lets see what they've got here, and if anyone in particular catches my eye.  We could use a couple more crew, even if it's just to help monitor the food production vats.

Ask around about the giant sky beast, too.  What's its name and what kinda things does it do?

The town is equal parts shacks cobbled together from scrap and imposing buildings carved from sheer rock. They have several voidcraft, but none as sturdy as yours: everything looks like it was made to navigate the exploded planet you're on, rather than set out across the universe. You walk in with the stride blade across your back.

Nobody here seems particularly ideal for a quest across the universe. Sure, there are some folks tinkering at devices that look competent enough, and you spot a couple of hulking offworlders standing head and shoulders above the rest that look like they could handle themselves. The issue is more one of attitude: they don't seem interested in excitement, or saving the universes, or leaving this settlement. Nobody comes across as particularly hungry for work, and they laugh or turn away when you talk about leaving the planet. There's a reason for that.

You ask a group of three old men lounging on the steps of the largest temple about the thing in the sky.

"That would be Ral, the world serpent."

"Yup, that's good ol' Ral."

The third man gestures to a huge series of engravings carved into the side of a building some distance away, and recites from memory:

"The great serpent lurked at the heart of the world for millenia, sealed in stone and fire. It was prophesied that at the end of days, Ral, the last and strongest of the Titans, would emerge from his prison to devour the world and everything in it. Only those of the royal bloodline of the kings of the Vally of Lillies would be spared the monstrous appetite of the world serpent, that they might return to the land of their divine ancestors within the sun."

"When the Reivers came, they didn't plunder our world. The people responsible for the current state of affairs came later. Some people say the Tungsten Heresiarch's engineers tore the planet open to get at the metal within. Some people say that wizards did this, in an attempt to extract the beating heart of the world. We don't really know who it was. What we do know -"

"What we do know is that Ral dint take too kindly," his companion interrupts excitedly, spittle flying. "He just came flying out as soon as they opened up the world, and we had no more trouble from them, no sir. And not from anyone else since."

Apparently, Ral does not let anyone leave the planet, not even off-worlders. He intends to consume the entire world when the slow disintegration of the planet is finally complete, and that includes everybody on it. Everyone here has come to terms with that fact, and are willing to live the remainder of their lives in this place. Ral meanwhile waits patiently, protecting the world until it's properly destroyed and can be eaten, fighting off any monsters, chasm beasts or bandits unwise enough to go near his world. It's a safer place than most, all things considered.

You do find out about a small group of offworld refugees committed to leaving the planet. Every previous attempt to leave has run up against Ral, and either turned back or never been heard from again, but these people have never even managed to get their hands on a voidship. There's a particular bar they hang out in, if you're interested in recruiting some, but these people aren't exactly the planet's finest. In fact, they're something of a laughing stock.

Sadly, there are no 3D printers, nothing like that. There aren't very many viable ship weapons on sale at the handful of dirty shacks and near-junkyards you visit. You patiently inspect countless scrap heaps as people try to fleece you into buying rusty tangles of wood and iron, until you finally find a squat crocodile-woman willing to trade for a handful of worthwhile things. Three possibilities present themselves.

For four bars of obdurite, someone offers you a powerful mechanical combat drone, a man-sized steel beetle, rocket-propelled and armed with an assortment of vicious cutting tools and ranged weapons. This is Loian technology, made by the same species that created the sentient blade Suzy is carrying. A pretty sophisticated bit of technology, even by your standards.

For three bars, you could get your hands on a lightweight launch system capable of firing half a dozen guided self-propelling missiles. Perfect for mounting on the ship or even Suzy's tank. While the explosives look reasonably powerful, the main plus here would be that you could customise the missiles, making them better trackers or adding special payloads.

For two bars, you can buy a fully functional ballista, intimidatingly large but barely more effective than the flechettes cannons the ship already has, or a more powerful but completely wrecked laser cannon.

A decent number of general-purpose spare parts, rusty but workable, could probably be bartered for one bar of Obdurite - you don't have much else to trade, apart from the ship's supplies. You could pay in services, but that would entail everyone spending a while here while you tinkered or Lucca gene-shifted folks or the others did who knows what.

One bar of adamantine is roughly equivalent in value to two of Obdurite.

Proceed into town, carried by whoever wants to.
You proceed on Suzy's back. This place has seen better days, but it isn't falling apart. No visible defences to speak of, which is odd for a settlement exposed to the void. You know countless Chasm beasts capable of tearing through this place in minutes have reached the surface, so that's pretty strange. If the people here aren't even worried about being attacked, fighting Ral head-on probably isn't a good plan.

(A couple opportunities come to mind..

If there's truth about this bloodline stuff, a quick bit of genetic engineering might free us from this place.  Also, laser-girl might make a pretty convincing argument for having solar relatives, if we can't find any samples to work with and are willing to take the risk.)

(Another possibility is we take advantage of the local safety to build up.  We probably should deal with the sky-serpent, since the shard colony that fitted us out would also be part of this planet, and thus on the list of things to eat.  At the time of leaving we could have our ship properly equipped, maybe even spare weapons or such for the locals to replace the sky-serpent.  It'd take a bit of development and mining, but we can build tools to build a factory to build what we need, even if it'd take some time.)

(We might also be able to just blow it away by using the space-sword to pierce the distance in the heavens, escaping us from the planet without a fight.  Assuming we can't just cut a deal with it, anyway.  Psionic communication might mean we can just negotiate our exit.)

Head out to talk with these "laughing stocks" and see how desperate useful they are for me the mission. (Preferably before Suzy gets to them)

Edit: (I think trying to straight up kill Ral is a terrible idea while he does intend to eat the planet he is also waiting for the planet to pretty much entirely break apart before making a attempt which (as long as nothing unnaturally speeds it up anymore) could take thousands up to millions of years. Plus it would most certainly piss off most of the people living on the planet and there is a very real possibility he will just kill us all. Our best bet is either negotiation or tricking it in some way maybe with a remote drone wink wink nudge nudge. Finding someone with the royal bloodline is probably also another option cause I highly doubt he would risk attacking us if we had someone like that for it could kill them as well (assuming the prophecy is 100% accurate))

Divine ancestors within the sun?

"Hey, Timo, could I be related to them?"  Says Suzy, willing her hand to light up with a yellow sun-like glow.

"Hmm.." says Timo, floating beside her, keeping one paw in a thinking pose, stroking his chin.  "I don't know."

"Surely you must know!  You always said you came to me for a reason!  And my magic is that of heat and light.."

Timo then shakes his head.  "I don't see people's bloodlines.  It might be true.  What I saw was destiny."

"For a while I was wondering if there would be some small destiny.  Maybe you'd be the hero of the space colony, maybe you'd set some person right.  Maybe you'd defeat some hardship and inspire others.  Maybe that small colony would be the backdrop for some act.. important, but not world-shattering.  Or mending.

But you were too strong for that.  I mean, some magical adepts only end up with a little power, they can do some small thing with magic.  But you had more than that, you can make actual lasers.  And change things, from one thing to another.. that's hard, and rare.  And then there's your body.  Some adepts only become healthy.. maybe their magic fixes a twisted foot, or maybe they just feel fit and full of energy.  But you got strong.  Really strong.  Strong enough it started making things hard instead of easy."

"So then I started thinking that you were destined for something larger, something more important.  And then.. well, all this happened.

It's only been a few days.. and building a new universe?  Maybe fighting a serpent that wants to eat a planet?  It makes so much sense now, why you got so much power.  This is a big destiny, maybe the biggest, and you needed this much power just to find the path to it."

"Huh", says Suzy.

"Yeah."  says Timo.

Check out the temple next, if anyone is in there.  Did Ral say anything about the royal bloodline?  Is it a real thing, or maybe some kind of myth?

After that, check out the bar.  I'm not sure if we'll be recruiting any of those hopefuls, but we really could use a few more people, even if they're less than perfect.

I send a psionic call out to Ral

“Hello? Can you tell me more about yourself, Also, Did you know my race? You seem like something they would make.”

The reply is a little faint. Ral is out of view, perhaps on the other side of the planet. The fact that he can hear you and respond across this distance is impressive to say the least.

"Hello. Your voice is loud, for such a little being. I am the World Serpent, the Devourer, the Insatiable, destined to consume the earth and all upon it. For millenia I slumbered in the raging fires in the core of the world, before awakening to defend what is mine. When the destruction of this planet is complete, I will swallow it entirely."

"I have encountered your kind, wanderers across the cosmos. They hoped to study me, but I think learned nothing. It has been many years since they departed."

A spot of chasm-navigation could bypass this, right?

It could certainly get you away from the planet very quickly. Ral is unlikely to be very fast in the Chasm, as he isn't a Chasm beast, so in the unlikely event that he gives chase, it won't be an issue.

The only problem is that the chasm is harder to access around large bodies of corporeal matter, such as the planet itself. The ideal place to drop into it would be in orbit, dozens of miles above the surface, probably in view of Ral. Attempting to slip into the chasm closer to the planet would risk damaging the ship - an analogy would be trying to launch a boat in shallow water, surrounded by reefs. Alternatively, you could penetrate space directly, creating a hole leading deep into the Chasm while staying in the planet. This would be less dangerous to the ship, and Ral would have no warning, but the hole it creates would allow matter and even space to sink into the Chasm, and give Chasm-creatures a way into the centre of the planet.

"Hmm"
Head out to talk with these "laughing stocks" and see how desperate useful they are for me the mission. (Preferably before Suzy gets to them)

You get directions to what appears to be some kind of bar, a room buried half underground, lit mainly by shafts of sunlight from the street-level windows. A motley bunch of humanoids sit around a single table, examining a clearly defunct bit of machinery. Every head in the room turns as you walk in, lean against the bar and clear your throat.

You simply mention the possibility of a way off the planet, and they're instantly willing to follow you. It's almost disappointing how easy it is to convince them to serve. All you have to do is mention that you're the captain of a vessel powerful enough to outrun Ral and leave the planet, and they're begging you to sign them on as crew members.

You meet the twins, Tara and Kate, two shaven-haired women who have a little experience working as scrapyard engineers. Then there's Jack Sterling, a badly-shaven thirty year old without any particular abilities. Not speaking but projecting an aura of excitement all the same is an eight-foot grey humanoid of indeterminate gender referred to as "the Foss", their metal staff and slabs of muscle suggesting they might be some kind of fighter. Finally, there's an old man in a wheelchair, Gustav, whose one-man ship crashed on this planet several years ago. The only one not born on this planet, he has some experience voyaging through what remains of the universes. None of them seem superbly talented, but they appear to be hardworking enough - they look like they've spent several hours painstakingly tinkering with a completely ruined combustion engine in a hopeless attempt to achieve escape velocity.

It'd mean you might have to stop for supplies every so often in order not to put too much strain on the ship's biological recycling facilities, but you could probably take all of these folk with you if you wanted to.

You walk through one or two of the huge sandstone temples. They are no longer treated as holy spaces, instead serving as living quarters, barns, infirmaries. It's strange to see people herding goats through crypts and playing dice on stone sarcophagi, but who can you blaspheme against if all the gods are dead? You think you spot some underground wheat growing in one room, a steady stream of water trickling through.

Lucca hasn't communicated with Ral about the royal bloodline, and Ral hasn't mentioned it. Talking to the older inhabitants of the temples confims that the royal bloodline did exist, and belongs to a line of rulers of a place a few hundred miles away. The last of them were killed during the wars and disasters that occurred after the arrival of the Reivers.

The locals also believe that if any such people were alive, Ral would let them leave due to their divine lineage. These people have seen a substantial proportion of the events described in their holy books come to pass in their lifetimes, so they're inclined to trust the books of prophecy.

You then visit the bar where the people who still hold out hope for a way off the planet hang out. You walk in just as they're falling over one another to buy Steve a drink, begging him to take them with him on the voidship. They don't look like a particularly talented bunch, but they don't seem too incompetent. True, one won't speak, one can't walk, one apparently doesn't own a shaving mirror, and two are covered in engine oil, but apart from that...

Varisdel has been busy looking for Suzy; he only just found her.
Hey, Suzy, think you could transform some more of the obdurite into adamantine? Three of them I think, there's a scrapped cannon I could fix up and a really cool drone, similar to that sword, but they'd cost 6 obdurite bars and we very don't have that, but adamantine is basically worth double that. Doesn't need to be done right now, I think I could get the stuff reserved.

"I can help our ship bypass the World Serpent entirely, but not without some risk. We will either have to fly some distance away from the planet, and towards Ral, or risk damaging the hull by jumping too close to heavy matter. We should attempt negotiation first. It would seem that we may also want to stay here for a some time, in order to transmute our Obdurite into a more valuable form."

"Please everyone there is no need to buy me drinks, your enthusiasm has already won me over! I never seen people filled with such passion in wanting to work for me before! So... out of the kindness of my heart, give me some time to write up some paperwork for you to sign and soon all of you shall be considered official employees of Voidship Enterprises™!!"

Three minutes later "Alrighty everyone here are your contracts as you can see it comes with some great benefits and our health care is top of the class able to fix/prevent even the most grievous of injuries and ailments, possibly even paralyses!" Steve hands out the contracts "Once signed you can consider yourself a official Employee and given a one way ticket off this rock! Steve chuckles "Again I really appreciate your enthusiasm and shall start assigning jobs for you as soon as possible but for now lets all cheer for Voidship Enterprises and success where doubters thought you would fail huzzah!

Wait for them to sign the contracts then spend some time giving handshakes and celebrating head back to the ship and show them around once that is all over assuming nothing goes wrong.

For a split second Steve's demeanor changes to one of irritation before quickly returning back to looking cheerful."Ah dont mind the sword it came with the ship you see? Probably cursed or something, tends to have a habit of lying and saying completely inane and silly statements like that out of nowhere probably part of its curse. Besides of course I'm not the only captain isn't like I'm gonna pilot the ship!"  Steve laughs "Anyway there are other people who work on the ship with me but they are just freelancers who do their own thing I'm the only head of Starship Enterprises™ and if you want to get out of here alive I'm the best bet you people got for the foreseeable future.

"You just told a lie which will quickly fall apart if these people perform even the slightest investigation. At which point they likely won't wish to keep working for you simply because you convinced them to sign away all of their rights on a piece of paper. There isn't a interstellar state, the only one enforcing that contract is you. Meaning that the only reason your 'employees' would have not to breach this contract which you made under false pretenses would be threats of violence from you, personally. Did you plan to trick them into getting on the ship and then coerce them to work through force? Did you even think that far ahead?"

Steve starts speaking in a neutral tone "I'm assuming I must of hit some type of nerve for you to get so worked up over this despite being nothing but a sword and for that I apologize but the fact you think so little of me as a person honestly hurts me even if your just a sword. I have told no lies in this bar nor do I intend to "force" these people to do anything should they wish to not do something I assign to them then I shall simply assign them something else besides all these people wish to come completely willingly its only natural they be made to work for the cost of keeping them onboard isn't it?

I don't know if you looked at the grand scheme of things at literally any moment in your existence but we are all currently in desperate times and sometimes that means you must do desperate things I am simply trying to bring back order to a new chaotic reality and giving hope to people with very little left, if a piece of paper is all that is required for that is that so wrong?"

"Suzy can you please leave the bar I wish not to distress my guests anymore with worries from some weird talking sword if my guests have any themselves they are free to share them and I can negotiate."

"Ok so ill designate you all as Managers so your free to offer up tasks to them as well wont even make you sign a contract for it as much as I despise the thought. Look I hate getting personal and im going to regret this greatly later but Its just... "Work your way up.." Suzy responds, in confusion.

Timo chirps in. "Means he wants subordinates, to manage people, to be in charge."

"Oh!  Well, that makes sense!  I mean.. yeah?  We need crew, and it only makes sense for you to be in charge.

..it's just that the contract doesn't let us work together.  Nobody but you can give orders.  The contract lasts forever.."

..she reads further..

"Does this say you can just take anything I give them?"

"Yeah, looks that way." Timo says.  "And, I think it also says we can't ask them to do any fighting.  I think we might want some of them to man weapons or to do bodyguarding."

"Yeah, Steve.  We're going to be working together.  You should list all of us as being able to issue orders.  And there should be a time limit on it.  This stuff about not making arrangements or acting on our behalf.. what if I want to send someone out to buy something while I'm busy?  Or if we want someone to fight with us?  This contract needs some work."

"You are going to be someone, though.  You're picking who we hire, how many people we hire, and what they'll be doing most of the time.  It's just that we're working together on this, so there's no sense in making that so difficult."

"Can you create an animal?  Say a fish in a fish tank?  And then we'll just examine it magically and make sure magic's compatable with your psionics."

Then, if it is, we'll give you a sample of Suzy's blood.  If it's kept cool, it shouldn't catch fire.  We'll then make some kinda deal where you get to use it for a couple projects in exchange for you making a couple proposals for changing Suzy.  You'd get to play with the sample, and, if we like your proposals, at some point you make those changes.  If we don't like them, you don't have to do anything.

As for me, I'm not actually an animal, so I don't think you can tweak me."

Suzy then adds something.

"I still think you just want a fish because you're a cat, Timo."

At that, Timo's tail begins wagging significantly harder.

"What makes you say that?"

You draw up the new agreements, including the revised contract, and welcome all five of your new employees to the company. After a round of what passes for champagne around here and a bit more backslapping, the six of you head back to the ship. You give them the grand tour, with the expected gasps of suprise at the Xelqu heart engine, oohs and aahs at the strangely beautiful waste processing garden, and screams of horror at the sight of the skinless Titan imprisoned in the hold. (Where did the talking sword get that thing?)

The next issue is probably accommodation. You could set up a few sleeping mats in an empty storage room, which would probably do for now, but they might want individual rooms to store their meagre possessions. Naturally, they're not complaining about anything at the moment, just waiting for you to assign them duties.

The ship now has two new residents, both some kind of desert hare: a swift, long-eared rodent with long legs and a tendency to squirm out of one's grip. Fine, Lucca can probably locate them psionically.

You manage to upgrade another bar of Obdurite to pure adamantine, but that's probably all the transformation you can do without resting for the night.

As things stand, you are waiting for Suzy to upgrade several bars of Obdurite to adamantine, so Varisdel can buy some weaponry for the ship. This will take another day or so, so everyone else might want to find something to do in the meantime.

Assigning the new crew their duties, making a profit working in the settlement, tinkering with personal projects, exploring the rest of the planet using the ship or the landing pods... there are many possibilities.

Also as far as your legs go between you and me go ask Lucca our resident floating squid and genetic engineering expert for help and I'm certain you'll be up and walking again in no time!"

"Finally we got the optimistic and always willing to land a hand Jack Sterling! You shall be in charge of the overall calming and low maintenance job of manning our garden this includes growing food for the ship as well as clearing up any blockages in the pipes should they occur. I'm sure you'll grow to enjoy it if you don't right out the gate."

"Fish!"  Suzy says, juggling the fish.  "I need to put it in water!"

Try to find a fish tank for the new fish.  Other than that, over the next few days convert the rest of the Obdurite, and finish the team's uniforms.  If I have time, extend the uniform thing to the new hires, making their uniforms a plain light gray.

As for the colony..

Split off an exploration group of microorganisms to enter the fish, while Suzy's still holding it.  They are to explore the physiology of the fish, and try to evaluate if Lucca's powers are compatable with magic.. ie, to discover potential problems from mixing the two.  There's been a lot of work on Suzy and I want to make sure we can work together, if necessary.  Note that the group isn't trying to colonize the fish, they're simply going to explore it and look for hazards.

For the rest of the time, review my options for better long-range combat.  Suzy is capable, yes, but there were some deficiencies found in accuracy -- it isn't something we'd have practiced inside the space colony.  Have the night crew check on any possible optimizations while the host sleeps.. motor neuron rewiring, say, and balancing out muscle fibres for more stability.  We'll do some training when we're not expending so much energy upgrading Obdurite.

Assigns the jobs then work on converting the extra storage room into a proper living quarters the new hires are free to help if they wish.
The new crew members seem happy with their new jobs, and rush off to take a closer look at the parts of the ship they'll be working on. The Foss watches impassively, arms folded, then follows you to the storage room. The two of you spend the day setting up rudimentary rooms, a communal area with seating, bathroom facilities and so forth. The Foss has a fair amount of local currency, and buys enough rugs, chairs and sleeping pallets to make the large space look quite homely. By the end, there are some quite pleasant living quarters.

Passing through the ship, you notice that the twins are hard at work taking an inventory in the ship's workshop, Gustav is familiarising himself with the controls, and Jack is very carefully inspecting several hundred feet of pipes for leaks.

"Okay, I got this floppy-ears thing for you.  Can you do your thing to it, Lucca?"  Says Suzy, squirming rabbit in arms.

“Hmmmmmmm....” Lucca locates the rabbits, And modifies it’s genes, Turning it into a fish and infusing it with Suzy’s dna.
Lucca focuses for a few seconds, psionically scanning the ship. One of the rabbits suddenly finds itself hauled out from behind one of the escape pods, gently floated down several dozen feet of corridor, and deposited beside a large crate of clean water.

Lucca spends the next few hours splicing fragments of fish DNA from his archives into the rabbit and flipping genetic switches that had been set to off ever since the species crawled on land. This is pretty easy, but inserting a great deal of Suzy's larger genome into the newly created fish without having it become semi-human is a bit harder. In the end, he leaves a few key cells as fully-fish, but makes most of the cells Suzy-fish, including all the blood and muscle, most of the organs, and so on. It's the best he can do without a fair chance of mistakes. He leaves the creature in the tank, as its body begins to slowly change and shed hair.

At one point, Lucca passes a humanoid staring at the biological regulation garden, and instructs the creature not to touch any of the extremely delicate organisms. Looks like the ship has some new passengers.

But I don't have thumbs!
You dont!

Suzy finds the fish a tank, a large clear plastic crate full of water and greenery. It's not entirely clear what rabbit-fish eat, so you try to find food that might appeal to both. Most of her time is spent making the Obdurite into adamantine. It's slow and draining work, but by the end Suzy is left holding four bars of shining blue adamantine. So no uniforms yet.

The colony is mostly occupied turning Obdurite into adamantine, for doubtless very good large-scale reasons.

The expedition finds that the new environment would be nearly as good as Suzy as a place to grow, although possibly with less potential when it comes to influencing macroscopic events. It's an odd place, a mosaic of semi-familiar cells that seem a lot like Suzy's along with occasional completely foreign cells, but it'll do.

With regard to accuracy, the colony realises that there's a bit of a problem. Suzy's muscles are well-balanced, the motor neuron fibres healthy, the tendons and ligaments just the right kinds of flexible and taut. There are improvements to be made, but they won't do much for this issue. The main issue with aiming isn't Suzy's arms, it's her brain.

While the colony can choose when to fire, aiming tends to be a macroscopic business - thousands of tiny microorganisms tumbling about in the bloodstream or swaying in muscle tissue trying to organise a concentrated energy beam together at short notice is a nightmare. Unless the host is completely still, it's much better to all agree to fire out of the fingers and let the host do the aiming. So the host needs to get her fingers in the right place. And that process depends on her brain, which sometimes doesn't function perfectly. With some practice Suzy can get better, but right now she really isn't used to firing heat rays from her hands. Apes like her are instinctively able to use hands in close combat, so your accuracy won't be terrible when it comes to contact electricity, but as for range...

Of course, there are solutions here. Actual reflexes can be wired in, simple and rapid links between the eyes and the muscles that Suzy can choose to activate just like she can choose to move her leg, letting her point a hand directly at whatever her eyes are tracking. And of course, the brain can be manually rewired, made better at certain tasks, faster and more accurate when it comes to predicting the movements of hostiles and using the limbs. Naturally, Suzy might be a bit sensitive about you effectively taking over her nervous system, especially when it comes to the second option, so this could be a problem.

(Whoops, I didn't notice this had updated. Sorry about that.)

Varisdel will open his empty box again! It's always good to check what it might have.
By the way, what's the status of the other drones he sent out?

4

By the time Suzy has finished creating the last three adamantine bars, the box has a new object. It's a finely drawn map of a nearby continent of this planet from before the fragmentation, showing major works of architecture: royal palaces, castles, tombs, temples, and so on. The architects and owners of each building are clearly marked.

The other drones were instructed to scan the whole planet, several million cubic miles all told, and are taking their time about it, apparently too far away to be contacted. Assuming nobody in the interior has stolen them yet, which is not a very safe assumption.

Steve gives a genuine smile a rarity for a man like him and while he abhorred every second that he spent working on the living quarters seeing such work humiliating and entirely beneath him he smiles anyway. For Steve once again has gotten something he has been looking for ever since his planet got eaten nay ever since he was a child! To actually have control. Steve looks over at the Stride Blade and gives a slight frown. Well he is getting there at least.

"Not bad if I do say so myself also thanks for the help Foss really appreciate it. Now then quickly follow me need to have a chat with one of my associates real quick."

Steve calmly walks over to Lucca's current location "Hey Lucca what was that earlier about killing me?"

"So.. has anyone found any ideas that should work to get us off planet?  I have one, but we'll need a bit of Lucca's genemodding."

"It seems there's this bloodline that the world eating snake considers royal, and it would allow someone from that bloodline to go to space.  If we can find a sample, I think Lucca could  change someone to match that bloodline, which would let us leave."

"Another idea is that we could use the Stride Blade to punch a hole through the sky.  I think if we had a decoy to distract the creature for a minute or two, we could get high enough to use the Stride Blade to get us into the Chasm, and away from the planet."

Give Varisdel the agreed-on two bars of Adamantium, keeping two for myself.

Wired-in-reflexes should be a real possibility.. I'd just need to invent a magical ritual or a couple of enchanted objects that Suzy can work on, which can then give an explanation for gaining the new ability.  Since enacting the ritual would be a very conscious choice, and it'd be her deciding to actively use it, there shouldn't be any problems with resentment.

But lets see how far she can get with practice before going for more extreme improvements.  There are some other ideas, like maybe giving her a sword or a bow or a staff or something can better direct her movements.

There's also what to do with the adamantium..

Take one of the adamantium bars, and cut off a tiny portion of it, enough for like a locket or a small bracelet.  Form one from the metal, using the normal reshaping ability and forge tools.  Suzy can decide what it looks like.  Use exposure to it and tiny fragments from the forging process to examine the biological usefulness of adamantium.. like, could it be used to strengthen bones?

“You... gave me a contract where I would be lesser in status and have to follow the orders of a HAIRLESS MONKEY WHO Doesn’t KNOW HIS PLACE.

After that outburst, Lucca decides to modify the new crew members genes and give them a bit of Suzy DNA, Out of scientific curiosity .

"Oh, hey, Lucca, it looks like magic can work with your genemodding.  Still interested in getting samples?"

Steve gives a look of genuine confusion "...What? Im sorry Lucca but im afraid I have no clue what your talking about the product ownership contract had no statement relating to following my orders on anything other then use of my DNA and the contractor contract I simply put your name as a CLIENT so you can give orders to our new workers although if this troubles you for some reason I will be more and happy to remove your name from the contract."

Steve gives a amused chuckle "Alrighty consider it done I shall update the other workers contracts as well in due time now if you excuse me I'm going to head to the bridge and relax for awhile." Steve updates the contracts to remove Lucca from the client list then relaxes on the bridge for a while staring outside the window at the stars and generally pondering things.
