Commander Arms Race

Philosophers call this the age of peace. They say that the horrors of war have finally cured humanity of its taste for wide scale destruction. That men grow tired of dying for their masters, that this last fifty years since a major conflict will be representative of the world going forward. They say that the weapons man can turn upon men are too terrible to contemplate using. They say that there will be no more war. They are wrong.

The old generals remember war. They remember glorious charges, heroic victories and valiant last stands. They think this generation has grown soft for lack of war. They conjure fears of the “enemy” in their people, push their governments to react to even the mildest slight. They rattle their sabers, aching to draw and lead their nations to glory once again. They believe a good war will be healthy for the state and over quickly. They are also wrong.

Alliances tangle together like a powder keg’s string, waiting for a single spark to light a wildfire. Two nations, isolated from their allies but strategically positioned, strike a match.

Askia to the East and Etroa, to the West each claim the other has wronged them, and muster for war. While they are each isolated from their peers, they have a disproportionate influence on the world stage, each known for their incredibly competent military commanders, and for the unique, nearly magical resources they bring to the table.

Ever since they became neighboring states, tensions have brewed. Ever since they showed their strength, nations have courted them to their sides. And when tensions boil over and war breaks out, the rest of the continent will surely erupt into warfare.

The philosophers lose their age of peace, the generals are forced to learn what modern war really is, and the world burns.

Well, now that’s the cheerful introduction of the way. Let’s get into the meat of this opening post, yes?

This is an Arms Race, and most of you know what that means. For those who don’t, here’s a TLDR. You take the role of the R&D divisions of two nations, designing the equipment used by your nation’s military, be it land, air, or sea. You also take some level of command over those forces because ostensibly you know how best to implement your equipment, but this mostly boils down to choosing where you attack.

This particular AR is heavily inspired by Man of Paper’s Industrialized Warfare Arms Race and Mechanized Warfare Arms Race, although I hope to put my own spin on the ideas and hope that you guys don’t just decide to try and replicate the special resources in those.

Annnd that’s about it unless I forgot something. Standard rules of etiquette apply; mistakes can be made on the part of the GM and players alike, emotions can run high, but try and keep it chill and try not to pick a fight - your team isn’t trying to lose just because they prefer someone else’s idea after all. Feel free to ask questions (Although keep in mind I’m not an engineering major, I’m probably not going to get so granular as tensile strength and specific heat capacities of your ubermetal :p).

Throughout the preliminary turns, try to keep the character and history of your country in mind, because there is a lore contest that ends with the last preliminary phase, rewarding the winner with an espionage credit.

Welcome, Etroan Engineer.

Don’t mind the construction sounds, the test facility is still in the works.

War is coming. It’s been a long peace, but it won’t last forever, and tensions are brewing with the awful Askians. As you all know, in the Treaty of Iraine, all signatories agreed to make efforts to disarm. And our leaders at the time, expecting similar honor from other countries, actually did it! They decommisioned the R&D division and ceremonially burned it’s headquarters, and the funding was never fronted to rebuild it! Until now, that is. So we’re rebuilding R&D from scratch. While our facilities are built, we'll be looking to our past to gain inspiration for the weapons of our future.

---

Ours is a long, eventful history compared to many nations. Oh the advancements we made, the wars we won and the culture we created! But even the greatest states started from nothing. We were once a people no different from the other tribes and soon-to-be-kingdoms of humanity, whether we were nomadic sailors or desert hunters or settling in an arboreal forest. But we would soon change that.

It is now the Design Phase.

There will be two designs this turn. For the first, you are asked what set your people apart from the rest in this era? What technology defined the not-yet Etroans?

The second design this turn, is what unique resource was found in your lands, and nowhere else? What nearly magic (and in fact, your ancestors may well have thought it magic!) material gave your people early advantages?

While not strictly required, it is encouraged to include narrative in these designs - particularly, at this early stage, what sort of terrain your nation found itself in, as this will influence the map.

Creative Projects / National Novel Writing Month 2017
« on: October 08, 2017, 01:59:38 pm »
About time for our NaNoWriMo2017 thread, come to think of it

the hour approaches, ready your sword!

I wonder who will make the thread this year.
Me.

What's National Novel Writing Month?
Very simple really - National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) can be described in just 5 words: November. 50k words. Write.

The goal is to put down 50,000 words in just a month. Daunting, yes. Crazy, yes. Fun, also yes. Just write whatever, no plot no problem just have ninjas jump at your character (you should be able to get a page or two out of the characters wondering "why ninjas" at least!), as long as it gets on the page. This isn't about writing a perfect novel. This is about writing 50k words of a first draft that's probably going to go under heavy revision before it sees the light of day. Or you could do more than 50k. It's mostly for your own satisfaction after all.

Why put the thread up now?

Very simple really. Preparation is helpful for many! Or you can just throw out ideas, or talk about it, or set up a discord server (I might. There is one already but it's super chaotic so just a bay12 one might be nice.)

Winnings?

Well, there's a "winner goodies" section at the end on the official site, if you win, with a bunch of promotional offers from the sponsors, but the primary prize is the satisfaction and the knowledge you can put words to the page.

Opening Theme, anime motifs yay

The school bell rings, signaling the end of the period and the start of lunch. Ms. Sakamoto looks up from the electronic board, placing the stylus she’d been using to write on her desk.

The school year is going into it’s second month now, with students settling into a routine. Clubs had started up 2 weeks ago, so many students have busy lives. Other students take part time jobs, or sports, or are proud members of the “going home” club. Despite these filled schedules, students still find time for rumor-mongering. A favorite among the students of Tochiya High School is that there’s been a rash of disappearances lately. In fact, that people have been disappearing around schools is one of the few things that Tochiya and Kobayashi High Schools have agreed on recently.

But of course, rumors are rumors. Who knows how valid they are?

“Alright then, that’s the lunch bell.” says Ms. Sakamoto, turning to the class and leaning on her desk. She’s much more casual in tone and mannerisms than many of the other teachers, but one gets the sense that she is more perceptive than she seems. The third years like to tell their underclassmen that while she’s a nice teacher, you do not want to see her mad. The delinquents- every school has them, don’t they?- very visibly avoid her, as well. “It was a good class today. Don’t forget the homework due Monday. Have a good lunch.”

A day like any other. Of course it is. There’s no reason it wouldn’t be, right?

Magical Burst

Yumachi City is one of the largest and most advanced cities in Japan, a symbol of the modern world. There are many things there; it has several great schools, it has some of the best shopping in the country, job opportunities, and more. With a city such as this, it comes as little surprise that not everything is as it seems...

But of course, such matters are of little concern to average high school students. You are all students at Tochiya High School, which is quite a good one as far as public school goes, and one with many sorts of people. Life is simple, and that’s fine. But it won’t be for long, now...

SO. A game using the Magical Burst system. I’d call it a Magical Girl game but since I’m allowing male characters… anyway, we’re using the following rulebook. It’s free and online, so availability is not an issue.

Rulebook

Reference sheets. Magical talents, basic moves, etc.

With that out of the way, let’s get into characters, shall we? You’re all students at Tochiya High School in the fictional Yumachi City. It should be obvious that your characters will become Magical Girls/Boys shortly after we start, so keep that in mind. Beyond that, try to keep things within reason, and run backstories by me first.

As for the city itself, we’re using a suggestion from the rulebook: Players can determine things about the city, within reason. Keep in mind that it’s a pretty modernized city, with dense urban areas and tall buildings and such. It’s a big place, so coming up with places will usually not be an issue.

Spoiler: House-Rules (click to show/hide)

Sheet:
Just a note: In the fourth rulebook, there are several tables you can roll on for nearly all attributes if you wish, but you do not need to do this. Character creation will mostly follow the rulebook, with differences that should be obvious on the sheet.

Spoiler: Combat-Related (click to show/hide)

Example Character

This is not first-come first-serve. I will be taking 4-6 players if anyone’s interested, and they will be picked based on how I like their sheets and how active they are on the forums. There will be a waitlist, in case of drop-outs or death. The game is still in the planning phase, so if you have questions now is the time to ask.

PLEASE DON’T POST YET RESERVING POSTS

Now you can post.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Katawa Shoujo v2 OOC Thread
« on: February 14, 2016, 11:52:21 am »
First off, a note: This is not another continuation off of Katawa Shoujo Gaiden. Because at that point it’d be far enough in the future that we could not reasonably predict it. It’s a reboot. Second, this was not my idea, it was Adragis’ and they asked me to co-GM. So, with that out of the way, let’s get to the point.

This is a game based in the setting of the visual novel Katawa Shoujo, as the name implies. It is set at Yamaku High School for disabled children, somewhere in northern Japan.. Every student- and some of the teachers- have some crippling disability that keeps them from attending a normal school. So guess who the players are.

Is anyone interested? If so, character sheet below. Let’s assume one character per person for now, Adragis might decide to allow two per person.

Roll To Dodge / The Floating Tower - IC - Excrement just got real.

The sun rises over the Guild hall, filtered through the rungs of a 20-story ladder to a tower in the sky. The adventurers stand at it's feet.
"Alrighty then," says the Guild Master, "Conein, Benny, Bobby, and Arthur. You're the first team heading in. Try not to die, but you signed waivers when you joined, so I don't really care. So, get on with it." He gestures to the ladder.

IC thread up

Long ago, there was a great war, between a demon king and the mortal races. The demon king seemed unstoppable, destroying entire nations with his armies. The world seemed doomed.

Until in standard fashion, he was stopped by a bunch of whiny teenagers with technicolor hair who’s village he’d ordered to be burned down, leaving them on a quest for revenge. It’s quite clear why he stayed in his tower. Not much of a demon king if something like that could stop you.

But none of that matters. All that remains of that time is the floating tower that the demon king had called home. It is most likely filled with treasure. And monsters. You can see where this is going.

So, this is my first shot at a RtD, so bear with me. I hope this will be fun. Your characters are members of the Guild. The Guild is a group of adventurers who decided to risk highly probable death for treasure. It will start small, with more and more upgrades being available as the game progresses. Death is to be expected, but not in vain; any gold your character had will be sent down to the Guild via magic and be used to upgrade it. If, on some off chance, your character survives ten consecutive floors, they will transport back to the Guild, and get an extra, modular +1 to the skill of their choice (as in, it always brings the number closer to 5, unless it is 5 in which case it does nothing).

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Infinite Stratos RP - IC
« on: July 23, 2015, 03:23:54 pm »
It is the first day of class in the IS Academy, situated on the coast of the main island of Japan. Here, girls from all over the world learn to pilot Infinite Stratos- commonly shortened to IS- armor suit that has dominated the world since it's invention. The first day was mostly individual introductions, and then the basics of the basics.

It is now the afternoon. There are many facilities on the grounds, from the cafeteria if you're hungry, to the arena if you want to test your skills, to a library that rivals the best in the world. Do as you wish.

((All player characters are in class 1-1. Dorms will be assigned and posted when appropriate.))

((Yup, yet another anime-based RP. Hopefully this one won’t die so fast.))

If you don’t know what Infinite Stratos is, here it is.. Warning, TvTropes link.

Infinite Stratos is a light novel and anime set a few years in the future. 10 years prior to the beginning of the show, Japanese mad scientist/genius Tabane Shinonono created a new technology that basically trumped every military thing ever. By a lot. It was called the Infinite Stratos, which was a mechanized exoskeleton that can be modified in a variety of ways. Set to revolutionize technology forever… except one issue: It can only be piloted by women, for some reason. Of course the main character, in standard anime fashion, is the exception.

But that doesn’t matter, because this isn’t his story. This takes place 20 years after the events of the events of the anime. ((Note- I’ve only read the light novel up to the point the anime ends. I don’t know if it goes any farther, I can’t find any more volumes.)) By this point, 6th Generation IS units have been created, and the IS academy in Japan is as prominent as ever. Student life goes on. But a storm is brewing…

There will be combat, yes, but it is by no means the main thing in the RP. Rolls will be a simple d20 system, augmented by stats. Experience has taught me I am not good at anything more complex.

I’m going to set a player limit at 8, for my own sanity. Might allow more later if I feel it isn't too high-maintenance. Applications are 2 sheets: The pilot, and their personal IS unit. It is not first-come first-serve.

Gender and sex are not on the sheet, because all pilots are female. However, I would allow transgender pilots (physically male, identifies as female), if someone wanted to make one. If you can give me a very compelling argument as to why a male who identifies as such can pilot an IS- and this means more reason than “"He’'s special"”- You can PM it to me, and I’ll discuss it with you. All pilots are 15, in their first year at the academy.

It's a new school year on Anoko Island, as you leave your home into the unseasonably warm Autumn morning. School is starting in 30 minutes.

As everyone exits their homes, they would notice a plain black card with an address on it. It's the address of the lounge next to the school. On the back is a symbol of a scythe.

2020. That’s the current year, and you’re living in a small town on Anoko Island, a man-made island off the coast of Japan, for whatever reason. Maybe your family moved there because it has one of the best high schools and colleges in the country. Maybe you’re from somewhere else, and are an exchange student. Maybe you just live there.

On the island, a new game is all the rage. The game is called Thanatos, and is an RPG where you play as a grim reaper, collecting souls throughout a network of labyrinths. It is the first Virtual Reality game of it’s kind. Except, there’s a problem. Recently, people have been starting to drop dead, and often there are reports of them being seen in game before their demise. Of course, the police lend no credence to these tall tales.

But there are those that do. And they know of those with the power to save more unfortunate souls from this fate. Welcome to the next phase of your life.

So. Persona: Millenium has died. I happen to really like the Persona series. I am also going to soon come into a lot of time. You see where this is going.

Game

There are going to be 2 main phases: Day and night. The day time is where most of the RP happens, and preparation for going into the second part.

The nighttime is when the dungeon crawls and battles happen. There will be more explanation when we get to that point.

Players

The players will have 2 aspects:

The Character, a teenager attending Anoko high.

The Persona, a manifestation of the Character’s psyche, and what they use to defend themselves from Shadows.

Sword Art Online. It'd been all you'd heard people talk about for the last several days. The first true virtual world ever created, and it's an MMO. Virtual Reality, finally real.

For whatever reason, you've gotten this game on the day of launch. Perhaps you're a hardcore gamer who waited in line for days to get it. Maybe you have a relative who's like that. If you were lucky, maybe you got a complementary copy because you were in the beta test. Whatever the reason, here you are, in this world of swords and dungeons.

You all quickly left the Town of Beginnings for whatever reason, and all accepted this short side quest. You are to slay all the Boars inhabiting a small cave right on the edge of town. It's to much to take alone, so you decided to party up. And so, 12 people gather outside the cave, preparing for their battle.

SAO RPG

A few years in the future, the first true full immersion system is created in Japan, by one Akihiko Kayaba. While the first year or 2 after its creation is filled with lackluster games, finally a game taking full advantage of the technology is created by the Akihiko himself. This game is Sword Art Online, a Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (VRMMORPG for short). You are one of the lucky ones who managed to get a copy before it sold out. Playing on the North American server for whatever reason (maybe you actually live in North America, maybe the server where you were was full) You never knew what you were signing up for…

This is a RPG of the anime and light novel Sword Art Online. To avoid conflict with canon, this game takes place on the North American server for the game. While one is never mentioned, what is mentioned is that English is the game’s official language. It makes sense that there would be a North American server.
