Title: Cavern water for wells?
Post by: Hobbie on September 24, 2011, 07:59:54 pm
I took the lazy-man route and just drilled down into a cavern for water. Is it going to have any negative effects on my Dwarves, emotional or otherwise?

Forgotten beasts flying up the wells and eating them might cause some negative effects.

I donīt think cavern water can be salty, so should work just as normal water. 1 z-level is murky water for some bad thoughts and hospital penalty, if the water is deeper then no problems.

As for forgotten beasts, put the well 1 z-level down with a ramp to it, and a floor hatch over the ramp. If a forgotten beast comes, evacuate the well-room and seal the hatch by forbidding, walling it in for good measure.

I didn't set any safeguards for my wells and lo and behold, a flying snail forgotten beast. This should be awesome.

Urist McMigrant has been upset lately.  He drew a FB out of his well bucket lately.

F.b.s are ok, but if you are right over it, pond snatchers can be a constant issue =--they drag dwarves into the well, instead of flying up.  I make a water reservoir and drain lakes into it using fortifications.

Update: The flying snail FB found the way up to the dining hall. Apparently everyone who was dining was also carrying a crossbow so it went pretty well.

Glorious off duty marksmen.  Best civilian defense ever!

Especially since I haven't managed to get any metalworking up yet. Alder bolt to the brain ftw. Semi-relevant question, if a dog is chained up beside the well and dodges into the well, what happens?

It falls to the bottom of the well.  If it falls more than one Z-level, it disconnects from the chain.  Chains in DF don't actually physically restrain creatures at all, they just act as mind-control devices to stop the creature from moving away under its own power.

I can just picture an off-duty marksman just casually shooting some eldrict horror climbing out of the well in the head before going back to his syrup roast without even looking twice.

"And I told Urist, listen here, woman, I said, if I hear you griping about Kol's socks again I'll- hold on a second."
*scrrrrrnk* (uneartly scream of rage) *thunk thunk thunk* *THUD* *scrnk-scrnk-scrnk*
"So anyways, like I was saying to Urist, I said I'd toss her right in the volcano she keeps on about those socks..."

A well should only give positive emotional effects. Unless there's a flying beastie going about, ofcourse. :P

If you're going to make a well that draws water from the caverns, I suggest you do a bit of tunneling and make something similar to this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That way, you won't be getting any nasties from the deep coming up your well.

First I had a giggle.
Then I read the rest of the thread.
Oh god.. my sides.    xD

This is now my signature, for now and forever.   Congratulations, sir.
