Title: Let's Play the Logical Journey of the Zoombinis- If we can get screenshots.
Post by: Sensei on October 01, 2011, 11:42:42 pm
Hey everybody! It's Sensei, posting from his marvelously outdated Windows XP computer. Why? Because we're playing shit so awesome Vista just can't handle it.

Those of you who played this game are certain to remember it. If you haven't, you should still enjoy the LP- it might be considered a kid's first introduction to surrealism. We'll be escorting culturally diverse blue beans with faces called Zoombinis on a pilgrimage of 48 (DEADLY!) logic puzzles. And when I say deadly, I mean it nearly gave me nightmares when I was eight- don't let the cover fool you, this game can be rather grim (or so I remember) if you think about the fates of the Zoombinis.

Before we get started let's look at the history here: Zoombinis was released in 1996 by Broderbund, a massive developer/publisher at the time. Remember them? Anyway, my particular copy came in a plastic sleeve (it's the older Quicktime version, not the 2001 DirectX version), and it advertises a free AOL trial inside. It's labeled as being sold by SmartSaver, apparently a group (according the the slip in the CD packet) which sells old, best-selling games at low prices, so mine must have come from later than 1996. Other advertised SmartSaver titles include: Barbie Magic Fairy Tales, Oregon Trail II, Kid Pix, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 8, and Arthur's Teaching Trouble. Alright, that should be enough nostalgia wankery.

Anyway, I'd really like to do this LP... if someone knows how to get decent screenshots from the game running under quicktime. Right now, they come out looking hideous, and I don't own the directX version of the game. For that matter, if I could run it on Vista too, it'd be nice (I managed to install the relevant quicktime on Vista, but the game just refuses to run claiming quicktime is not installed).

Oh man, now that you've mentioned The Oregon Trail II, I gotta replay it.

Have you tried FRAPS?

FRAPs has a function that lets you take screenshots and record videos even when not in-game if I recall correctly. It wouldn't be able to show your FPS, though.

I stopped using FRAPs a while ago (didn't like the 30 second video limit) but I'll try using it again for screenshots. Perhaps the 30 second videos should suffice for capturing the narrator's over-the-top voice acting too.

You could register FRAPs.

With any luck I'll start doing a Zoombini LP this week. For the record though, I did do an Oregon Trail LP earlier.

Ah, I remember the days when that game was my favorite... So many dead blue things... the horror... Watching with interest.

Okay, after some major computer problems... I'm back! Zoombinis runs fine, on my spare rig, but fraps will not even start. So I'll need solutions with FRAPS/other programs, and time to bother with them. Despite that the thread has failed to produce any actual gameplay, I'm still up for doing the LP if I can get something that captures. Might try Procaster.

I want to see some childhood carnage myself.  Print screen isn't working for you?  It seems to capture an image as-is of the screen, and should give you quality equal to your resolution, unless quicktime does something very strange.

Print screen, open paint, Ctrl v, save, upload to your image hosting site of choice.  Alt+print gives you an image of the currently active window, so you won't need to crop out part of your desktop or anything.

Print Screen doesn't work quite as easily as you think, Girlinhat. For example, have you ever tried doing a print-screen of a video played in Windows Media Player? I have, it simply doesn't work. I wouldn't be surprised if Print Screen had some other quirks which make it unusable for this game.

I'll admit that I haven't toyed with it overly much, but it's done fine for me on different games.  But Quicktime is a hellhole all its own, so I don't doubt it.

also, Hi! Girlinhat, see you on the cataclysm fourms,
also, Hi MC Dirty, see you on the other fourms.

So far, printscreen, FRAPs, and Greenshot have failed me.

Unless somebody has a rather clever way to pull screenshots or footage out of that godawful quicktime, this is going nowhere.

Have no idea if it will work, but you could try hypercam.

If all else fails, you could probably try Camstudio or VirtualDub. As far as I know, those don't even recognize which windows have games running in them (unlike Fraps) and they should record absolutely anything on screen or in a rectangle.
Then again, Print Screen should do exactly that, too, and that didn't work...

Anyway, both Camstudio and VirtualDub are free, so it's worth a try!

Oh man this game... 8-year-old me was very frustrated by some of the higher level puzzles. Curse you, pizza troll trifecta! :shakes fist:

I remember when I discovered a glitch on the Zoombini group creation screen that let me create pairs of identical zoombinis if I double-clicked the "create zoombini" button. This made the puzzles much easier, and through careful zoombini management I would abuse the storage points to create groups of identical zoombinis. I was such a little exploit-monger...

I will observe with great interest and trepidation.

EDIT: So I got this game working on my laptop, but the game isn't allowing me to use combinations that have been used before. I swear that I remembered doing this. Huh.
