Title: Dungeon Crawl 0.20 tournament: get on a Bay12 team!

Tiruin someone was added to your team 2d6 if you have time please edit your RC file
** You have 3 days to get in, on or change teams.   Team Captains please make sure your RC is updated. Check the tourney mage to make sure everything is Ok with your team.

Servers are all posting properly, have fun!

Each release of crawl comes with a two weeks long tournament and the 0.20 tournament is coming up. Bay12 has been participating (with good success) in previous tournaments. The tournament plays online on any of the servers and score is kept individually and for teams.

The tournament officially starts 20:00 UTC Friday 26 May.
The tournament officially ends 20:00 UTC Sunday 11 June.

A team may have a maximum of 6 players, new players are very welcomed.
The tournament begins soon but placement in teams can be made up to one week after the start.

We usually match people of similar skill using this criteria : (Adding a team of each type this year since we've been having overflow, naming advice welcome)
Expert: Win or multiple runes.
Champions / Masters                   
Advanced: A rune or close to one.
Blacksmiths / Metalsmiths
Intermediate: Reached the Lair
Miners / Carpenters
Beginner: Wants to join the Tournament
Nobles / Dabblers

We generally field a few teams, split by level, but there's no limit to the number of teams and we can add more as needed. Each team has a team captain(whose only responsibility is to place their players names in their rc file and keep it updated), and up to 5 members. I'll be captain of the Champions.  Ggurman will also help me maintain this thread.

Don't be afraid to ask for a higher rank, be ambitious! Also to sign up as captain you only have to add your group to your list in the RC file; we need volunteers that will update their teams in the beginning(teams may NOT be changed 1 week after tourney starts). 

Add me on steam if you would like to chat/talk before or during the tournament.  Steam is same name as here for me.

Simply joining a team is easy, post here and when you are added to one simply edit your RC file (for the .20/tournament version) with the code below your team.  Takes several minutes up to several hours for the tournament page to reflect your new team status (captain also has to add you).


To become a member of a clan, you need to add a line to the top of one of your version 0.20 rcfiles like this:

# TEAMCAPTAIN nameofcaptain

This should be the very first line of your rcfile, with no blank lines or comments appearing before this line. The # is important to make sure Crawl doesn't try to parse the team data as an option.

The team captain must have the name of her team and the names of all team members excluding herself (up to five) in one of her version 0.20 rcfiles, like this:

Won only once. I think that was in 0.18; didn't have time to do 0.19 well (and died a ton \o/)

Sign me up in Expert or Advanced. I haven't played seriously since the last tournament and did quite poorly there, so I'm a little leery of getting an Expert spot, despite my multiple 15-rune wins.

I'm in.  Had an 8 rune win last tournament though I still haven't pulled off a 15 runer, so I guess expert.  I haven't finished crypt or found a pan rune in a game yet, so I don't mind being dropped down for someone who has.

Last tournament I didn't get a single win, but I've nothing better to do that Friday, and I've been playing Crawl since forever so I might as well continue.

You probably can, most of the servers used to be tallied by the tournament.  We'll probably fill up all of the teams.

Put me wherever. The best I've done in Dwarf Fortress is kill a Roc in Adventure Mode and become Mountainhome in a savage tundra/coniferous biome. In DCSS I had cleared Swamp, Snake Pit, Elf:2, Crypt, Vaults, Zot:4, and most annoyingly: the Vestibule (going there was a mistake). Then I gave up when reading the wiki guide for Zot:5. I'd grown too attached to my character to try something as suicidal as winning. Here is my current save:

I always play as a naga. Usually elementalist. So, expect me to at least kill Harold and Orcish Mines. I'll probably play until I die in vaults. So like, three runes. I might get another few on my second run and then burn out. So my goal is to get fives runes and clear vaults.

Been playing a lot to get ready for the tournament, and just had my best game yet! Fun fact, though stair-dancing Vaults:5 might work for a while, eventually a warden is going to lock the stairs. According to the IRC folks, I should have taken an escape hatch down. Oh well, better luck next time!

Also, that +13 Crystal Plate was craaaazy. I definitely wouldn't have gotten as far without that lucky find.

Psh... IRC folks are cowards.  Get rf+++ and an immolation scroll and show the V:5 welcoming party who's boss.  Seriously though, if you're running a melee/high AC build it's both immensely satisfying and saves you from a ton of tedium.

Which earth elementalist race has the best lategame? I like naga but I feel that without vehumet they are too slow for an orb run..? Deep Elf and Demigod seem strong. I think Vine Stalker is really cool, and would like to try a long blades + earth elementalist hybrid for those mana-restoring auxiliary attacks at close range.

If you haven't tried it yet Gargoyles make great Earth Elementalists.  It's pretty nice being a spellcaster with 40+ AC

Things I learned about Crawl recently:

Flayed ghosts can actually kill you - they do some damage in addition to flaying. (I died to a flayed ghost with nothing around it on D:10 because I thought I could safely attack it even though my health was really low)
You can be drained more than the experience that you have, leaving you stuck at 0 skill in everything even after you kill lots of things. (I learned this after a particularly unfortunate run-in with Sonja)
Deep Dwarfs can't use MP gained from rings of magic to recharge wands.

Since this starts tomorrow, perhaps we should combine the Metalsmiths and intermediate group? They don't have a captain so it'd not be that hard, and then we'd have a mostly full team. I'm down, just a thought though, not sure if we usually get people after or no.

I think I'll do deep elf earth ele. Now that haste has been removed from spellcasters I feel scared to play naga.
and if that doesn't work then a naga fire ele.

Hmmm. Does worshipping Jiyva and farming xp in the Abyss let me transition from fighter to conjuror..? I should be fine in the Abyss as a level 15 fighter right? Gargoyle seems optimal but vine stalker's still tempting me. I guess food is a problem. Naga has a slow metabolism. But then I'd have too much strength. Arrrgh! I just want some way to safely cast bolts! Why is the earlygame so hard? ... My very first DCSS character was a transmuter, because I was into a transmutation cult IRL. Why are there no transmutations to increase movespeed? I want haaaaaaaaaste. When I played, I could turn into a spider, swift myself, haste myself, and have ridiculous movespeed. Now nagas are limited to what? Swiftness and controlled blink. Which don't work for orb runs.

No worries. The tournament doesn't officially start for another few hours anyway. Just consider it good practice.

I was kind of hoping to get a 15-rune win for my first character, but so far it really seems it isn't happening. I keep running into stupid situations and having to burn consumables, the game keeps generating a ton of artefacts, but they're all -resist of some sort, and I don't even have an executioner axe.

I could probably get some Fire Dragon Scales and 3-5 rune win, or I could train up bows, get Gold Dragon Scales, ditch Oka for TSO and die in Pan.

Well, I was doing really well, but then ran into a player ghost of an Abyssal Knight. Naturally he banished all my Brother summons, and then me. I survived the Abyss, which was a definite first for me, but then died shortly after being placed back in a pile of an ice drake, a wind drake, four death Yaks, three Yaks, and some other fun things.

RIP me. And also RIP that +3 Crystal Plate {rElec} and +7 Triple Sword of Elec (thank you for once, Trog!).

Four enemies spawned behind me on my stairs in shoals. I should've feared them and blinked away, but I used fog instead of fear, which did not break the aggro :(

Also wasted like three potions thinking I could take on a weaver of entropy when there were actually two of them and a dozen ants. Same with the first death: Two ice dragons instead o' one!

Entropy Weavers are Goodbye Cruel World tier enemies, since Corrosion applies not only -slay (which is significant in and out of itself) but also -AC. No matter how tough you think you are, an Entropy Weaver is something you pay attention to. (Ask me how long it took me to learn this).

Also yeah, the orb does spawn a ton of annoying stuff, so it's worth using up all your Recharge Wand scrolls on digging, since it's not like there's an actually usabale wand nowadays.

Also also, I keep forgetting just how horribly all Webtile servers run for me. It's absurd, and I'm pretty sure I won't be doing a 15-rune win this tournament, just because it's obscene. You press a button, then you spam spacebar like crazy to make sure your stupid barachian idiot doesn't take 50 steps instead of one.

Well, I died on my orb run. I feel like the orb is spawning much more panlords than before, also is spawns seraphs apparently.

I saw 2 pan lords and a seraph between Zot 5 and Zot 1 where I died. And I wasn't lingering for heals or anything as I was playing a DD.

Today I watched a dude on webtiles play a pretty sick build - VsFi^Uska (http://crawl.xtahua.com/crawl/morgue/kuniqs/morgue-kuniqs-20170527-155902.txt)

Heavy armour, Large shield, shortblade, amulet of Faith.

General idea - run at everything, shiv its face in, Uska stuns the entire screen, links their health, you stab any dude and basically everything gibs. Anything gives you trouble, you telefrag it. I am definitely stealing it for after my current MfSK, but if anyone wants to try it now, I spectated for quite a while and it seemed like a very enjoyable thing to play.

Well, thanks to an extremely hungover day (or in spite of it) I grabbed my first win, 4 runes with a DDBe.  Had enough resources to grab more runes but didn't feel like being a DD anymore.  Also Abyss really messed me up with Mutations (Teleportitis and Berserkitis before Zot:5, yikes).  Pretty decent loot though, and not too many hairy moments.

Edit: yeah, this thing is pretty powerful.

Think I made a major mistake in going for a (and using all my enchant weapon scrolls on) a quickblade for the majority of the time. Sabres appear to do visibly more damage, thankfully Nikola had this wonderful Arc Blade for me. It's probably not going to be my end-game weapon, and it's making the game run even slower but damn if it isn't fun.

I ran across Nessos and just one-shot him with a discharge. It was satisfying.


I'm pretty sure I'm going to try to 15-rune this one. VsFi^Uska isn't the highest scoring combo, so might as well. Otherwise I'll need to do a stupid Gargoyle build or something, or just forego 15 runes alltogether, but it feels somewhat ... empty.

Not that different from getting 14 runes and dying in NeoTomb, come to think of it

Edit: So far so good... since all pan lords are giant cowards and can't fight without 50 000 mini-demons around them, I just telefragged every single pan lord I came accross. Not sure how well this will do in hell, but I presume just the same, since not even Antaeus is really alone, the coward.

Two. It's two. I've had to get 2 runes with 9 scrolls of ench weapon in my bag because there's no Eveningstars anywhere and I'm too stubborn to enchant a normal morningstar.

edit: Ah, a demon whip of venom. Now that's the good stuff! Distracting a Juggernaut with my whip-cracking skills while he suffers a very slow of death of either venom, old age, or boredom, whichever comes first.

Juggernaut are pure evil anyway, they tend to make me panic more than packs of shrikes.

As for the weapon I usually avoid to identify my scrolls by reading them early game unless I have more than 1 as to be sure not to waste a scroll of brand weapon. Then I just loot an enchanted weapon from a monster with +3 on it or something and brand it. You have a more than even chance to get fire, freeze or vorpal so that's nice.

I wasted three Brand Weapon scrolls on the stupid thing - it started out with Venom, went Draining -> Vampiric -> Venom again and welp there go all my brand scrolls. It's funny how even at +9 it's basically useless. 11 damage 0.5 mindelay - for comparison an eveningstar is 15 damage 0.7 mindelay, and 4 base damage may seem small, but when you're desperating trying to strangle a lich with your demon whip since it does more damage than hitting it you'll be begging for 4 more base damage.

edit: I'm also running out of options, since it's almost time to swap to TSO, and he won't let me use any Demon whip so I basically have no choice but to bless my current one. I could try Pan with Kiku and hope a demonspawn has an eveningstar, but that's still kind of bad, since I may hit a Pan Lord level and my whip is still Venom so I won't be doing squat.

It's so harrrd :'( Am I doing the dungeons wrong? Cleared orcish:2 and snakes:1 and lair:3 and dungeon:13 and now I have to clear swamps to open vaults. Wait what? Maybe I should finish dungeon:15. Just defeated Jorgrun and Asterion. Should I be in snakes? Dungeon? The swamps are making use all my potions even with finesse. I'm kind of anxious because there are only two more halfing ice ele slots. I maxed out slings/short blades/dodge/shields. (Edit: Cleared D:15 and Elf:1. Gonna clear Snakes:2 and then head back to swamp to grab the decaying rune. If someone else clears zot I guess I'll do abyssal and slime pits and halls and silver.)

Edit: ARRRGH! Last halfling slot and I don't even have a ruuune!

VS of Yred is great. Allies to help you get breathers to regenerate and Drain Life when you really need healing. The thing is, you get really used to your minions hitting things. Until, of course, they don't. See, Phantasmal Warriors have a nasty habit of teleporting away from between you and your enemy. And because Webtiles LagTM I didn't notice my ghostwall had scampered off until it was too late. The fact that the entrance to Snake was guarded by a guardian serpent that ate my only blink scroll sure didn't help.

Damn man, you're putting all the rest of us on the Blacksmiths to shame - you really should've went for the Champions, so you'd be in sufficiently august company.

In other news, I'm really enjoying my MiMo - I went with Chei, which gave me enough Int to cast blade hands, even in decently heavy armor. This marks the first time I've ever actually memorized  the spell - I really like it!

That said, I think I owe a lot of my success with this character to a ring I found just chilling on the ground, early in the dungeon (D:5, my chardump tells me):
the ring of Poiskiub (right hand) {rElec AC+6 Dex+2 Slay+3 SInv}

Best damn ring I've found all tourney.

Ultrahigh spawn rates are dumb. I spent all day gathering resistances for each branch and had separate sets for rN+++ MR+++++ rF+ rCorr+ rPois+ rC+ rE+ and double mutation resistance.

But it was four lucky dicerolls that killed me this time.

After I won my first-ever game as a MiFi I jump straight into caster world and tried to win with a DeFe. I had a few semi-deep runs but would ultimately run short on resources, get a little sloppy, and die to something like a pack of centaurs. I ended up not playing the game for a few years. Jumped back on a MiFi for this tournament and will likely win in my second attempt.

Casters are way harder than melee.

Well you can't press auto-explore because of how unsafe it is to facecheck instead of whittling away at the fog of war before rounding corners. So casters take a lot longer to play safely. Once you hit level ~16 they gain a LOT more versatility than fighters. Of course, they also make lots of noise and can't teleport without mana. Healing potions drop a lot more than mana potions.

Ugh. Really irked had a good ogre going 156hp, went downstairs, 7 gargoyle 1 war gargoyle all 3 turns away from stairs. 156>55 in one turn.  No possible escape.

Ok so I'm about to post a whole ton of somewhat basic stuff, so I'm really sorry if you already know all of this, I just haven't spectated you so I don't know what your level of play is.

Standard branch order right now is Lair -> Dungeon up to 15 -> Orc -> Lair branches (Swamp > Snake > Spider > Shoals) -> Vaults 1-4 -> Depths -> Vaults:5 -> Zot. You don't really get to deviate unless you have a very good idea what you're doing, for example Mummy or Kiku characters which like to peak around Tomb way earlier than standard, or Jiyva followers which beeline for Slime.

This gets said often, and earlier I was like "Wtf this is so not true", but you don't actually need resistances for any of those branches, except rP for Spider. Even that is doable without, but it's needlessly tedious. What you do need, is preparation for the major threats in each branch, backup plans, and always keep in mind running away and living is a lot more important than killing the thing, since thing most likely has friends nearby, while your corpse rarely does.

Also when I say "deals heavy XXX damage" I do mean heavy, as in potentially game-ending. Pay attention when fighting it, since combat in Crawl is swingy as heck.

Also also,  right now is a great chance to go spectate some people. I play on Xtahua, and there's a lot of good players here - Yermak, Charly, 4thArra - just pop in to your server of choice, see who's got a lot of spectators and go watch. Chances are they're playing a harder combo worth more points, so you're likely to see a lot of good habits.

Lair: usually safe, since only mambas and spiny frogs are faster than you, and they aren't really herd monsters. No resistances needed, Freezing weapons are best, but you can use Venom, or whatever you have on hand, really.

- Hydras: Wands of Scattershot tend to one-shoot hydras at about 4-5 Evo skill. Hoard them and use them. Alternatively use Conjure Flame, Flaming/blunt weapons and berserk, or just walk away
- Blink frogs: they hit REALLY hard and come in packs. Lure them away and fight them one at a time. Use freezing weapons if you have them, wands of Iceblast or summons.
- Death Yaks: you probably can't take them right now. Go away and return later
- Mambas: dodge a lot, poison a lot. You can't really run away from them, so burn any wands or buff potions to survive if necessary
- Basilisks: if you don't have MR+++ you will get petrified. Don't fight them if other monsters are nearby, kite away and fight one thing at a time.

Dungeon 10-15: Be prepared to run. Out of Depth monsters, uniques and heavy elemental damage exist here, and you're probably not prepared for all of them.

- Horrible things: deal massive elemental damage. Usually there aren't packs until D:15, but treat them with utmost respect
- Meliae: deal massive smite damage. Wands if evocation is high, berserk, or just tele away if they catch you in an open room.
- Ettin: will one-shoot you. No matter how much armour you think you have, and the god of your choice save you if you're using dodging. Use currare, allies, or self-buffs, and make damn sure there isn't anything else to keep it company
- Wizards: can banish you, and deal pretty heavy spell damage. Don't underestimate.
- Liches/Ogre Mages: can use crystal spear to nearly instagib you. Seriously, thing does up to 3d30 damage. Can also banish/paralyze you and beat you senseless in the meantime

Orc: Usually ok, since nothing's faster than you, but you can get overwhelmed by Knights/Warlords/Paralyze. MR is preferable to elemental resist, if you have to choose, but be mindful of Sorcerers draining you.

- Orc Sorcerer: can paralyze you, and summon annoying enemies that mutate you. Get MR+++, or take care to not be in position to get Warlorded to death if paralyzed
- Stone Giant/Ettin: will beat you up and take your lunch money in melee. Stone giants can even stuff you in a locker from range. Use summons, self-buffs, run away
- Orc Warlord: buffs other orcs, usually has really nice weapons and a group of other orcs
- Orc High Priest: Smites, summons more demons

Swamp: In my opinion easiest of Lair branches, if you have rPois, watch out for Thorn Hunters and have a way of killing Hydras. There is heavy physical damage, but if you play carefully and kite, you should be fine. You may need to skip the rune floor, it's ok.

- Swamp dragons: if you don't have rPois, these guys get really annoying. Can get you poisoned for the majority of your HP in a few turns. Probably best to get rPois
- Thorn hunters: deal heavy physical damage, so either be prepared to burn them down quickly, or to deal with the damage, preferably by kiting the stupid eggplant to a corner and killing it alone
- Spriggan Druids: can buff animal monsters nearby, also make the trees angry at you and it's stressful seeing all those angry faces :(
- Shambling mangrove: can unflight you, and summon Hornets when it's at low HP
- Tentacle monstrosity/Very Ugly Thing: can beat you up in melee. Probably best to run

Snake: Usually ok if you're aware of Shock Serpents/Anacondas/Guardian Serpents. You may need to make kill-holes a lot, or kite to existing ones. Constriction is bad, and you'll want to physically get away before blinking if possible, since it can prevent blinks/tele. Usually you should start backing away as soon as you're constricted and there is another threat around except the one directly strangling you right now

- Shock serpents: their lightning damage is insane, even with rElec. Prioritize, kite, Polymorph, or self-buff. They are fast, so probably not that much kiting.
- Guardian serpents: teleport all other nagas around to surround you. Find a kill-hole or make one yourself, you really want to only be seeing 1-2 squares at most, unless you're comfortable with being constricted a ton by the greater nagas it dropped on your head
- Naga warriors: can constrict you for pretty heavy damage, and are rather tough to kill. Feel free to use allies/self-buffs
- Greater Nagas: can teleport you, also constrict. More allies/self buff use.
- Nagarajas(?) (naga snipers): can deal impressive physical damage despite your defenses, also use portal projectile to plink at you while hiding behind their meatshields.
- Naga ritualist: gives you -rPois so you can slowly poison to death

Spider: Everything is faster than you, so one of the harder branches. I prefer heavy armour here, since one tarantella is all it takes otherwise.

- Spark wasps: really rare, but man oh man. Heavy electrical damage, blinking attack, bleh
- Enthropy weavers: SATAN. Kite or self-buff even if you have rCorr and are doing pretty well so far
- Orb spider: throws orbs at you, runs away. Don't get hit by the orbs if you like your current character. You can use wands, needles, or any ranged attack really.
- Ghost wasps: drains your mana, so if you need your mana, try to get sInv
- Jumping spider: nets you, so your evasion drops to 0
- Tarantella: irresistible confusion, so you'll get hit a lot
- Emperor scorpion: really tough and hart-hitting melee monster. Standard anti-melee precautions

Shoals: Really the worst. You need MR since a lot of things fear/mezmerise you so you can't go in certain directions, everything pokes you from range or throws spears at you. I think nothing here sees invisible, so that's one option. Another is flight + heavy armour, or major ranged attack power, either spells or weapons.

- Merfolk impaler: heavy physical damage from your character being shish-kebabed with javelins
- Merfolk aquamancer: throws you around, throws steam, summons water elementals
- Merfolk avatar/siren: makes you walk up to them, loud noises break this so wands of lightning/scrolls of noise, unless this too got changed
- Kraken: really heavy physical damage. Basically just run away, it's not worth it.
- Alligator snapping turtle: even heavier physical damage, also reaching attack so you're not safe even behind a summon

Vaults: Be careful of monsters that mark you, summon, lock doors or shoot you a lot. You may need to get creative with kiting, or just teleport as soon as you get marked/someone starts to recall.

- Convoker: mights other enemies, uses Word of Recall to drop a bunch of assholes on your face. Break LoS, Hex it, bonk it on the head when it starts
- Sentinel: marks you so every single asshole in the level runs at you. You need at least MR+++ to be somewhat safe, and you'll still get marked. If you see one of these, pause and prepare a fallback route
- Warden: closes doors, so you get locked with any number of assholes
- Boggart: Summons a ton of annoying assholes, including other boggarts which summon more assholes and suddently oh no

Depths: imagine EVERYTHING is Satan, but here are the Satan-est

- Caustic Shrike: just teleport. It's not worth it. There's so much more to live for. If you're serious about fighting it (and they usually come in packs) rCorr, summons, self-buffs, checking the scoreboard for what your next char will be
- Juggernaut: absolutely massive melee damage, and it rushes you. It takes a lot of time to wind up, so if you somehow survive the first hit (you probably won't), you can usually just run away screaming.
- Troll Earth Elementalist: breaks down walls to get at you
- Troll Shaman: hastes and mights other trolls to get at you
- Boggart: same as vaults
- Flayed ghost: irresistible kinda-torment, unless stoneform or Gargoyle. Prepare to run away, or kill it first, or fight whatever else is there with 1/3rd of your max HP.
- Titan/Spriggan Air Elementalist: can airstrike you, so you should probably not be flying here
- Spriggan Defender/Berserker: really tough melee monsters, also like to use distortion weapon to show you the wonders of the abyss

Zot: rF+++, rElec. You can't really do it without these. You can substitute potions of Resistance for rElec, but the fire thing remains. The orb floor, do a lot of shouting and kiting. There's a good chance of perma teletraps on the only ways into the orb chamber, so if this happens just stand besides them and yell a lot, then kill whatever gets teleported. Prepare to run/tele if something comes along while you're fighting an Orb of Fire.

- Orbs of fire: rF+++, summons, self-buffs. Don't even try otherwise, unless you have a safe way out. And you won't.
- Ancient lich: like a normal lich but with more summoning and crystal spears
- Electric golem: rElec, or new char.
- Orb guardian: don't let it get berzerked or it WILL bash your face in

So bummed, not only did I end up staying up half the night, but I splatted my VpSu in the Abyss after running out of heals and blood.  Especially frustrating as the run had started off awesome with 2 pots of experience and I had somehow survived having berserkitis from D:7 on.  On the bright side, I was able to grab the abyssal rune before I died, but still, shame I couldn't have brought that win home.

In other news, I've just found out about the mutation "You are occasionally teleported next to monsters." I've decided that I do not like it. Not one bit. Might have to start eating ugly things to see if I can get rid of it (as it appears that cure mutation potions no longer exist?)

Edit: Bah, damn you constrict. I guess I should've started a teleport as soon as the upstairs got locked - I assumed I could just slouch everything to death, but it turns out that tentacle monstrosities don't slouch well.

Potion of mutation removes three mutations now I think. Read the description if you have one.

Cure Mutation potions don't exist, but Mutation potions were changed. They always do the following three things, in this order:
Remove 2-6 mutations, Add 1-3 random mutations, Add 1 good mutation.

Right before tournament I had a DrFi game where I maxed-out my Chei piety and then found boots of swiftness and jewelry of berserking :D
Grats on clearing so much with no magic resist.

Oh man, I've had a DgSu started ever since my gargoyle, and I'm so damn hesitant to actually play it. It's worth a ton of points, but it's also a friggin Demigod Summoner, two things I've never, ever played. And since it's worth so many points, I'll be sad when I die before getting to lair.

I was looking through the less-played race/background combinations and tried out MiTm. As it turns out, it's not that bad if played as a unarmed Chei caster. Chei's stat boostsmake up for awful minotaur intelligence and minotaur aptitude for fighting and unarmed combat makes up for the awful magic aptitudes. It's pretty good once Blade Hands is castable, although I've only made it as far as the Lair. I'd have made it further except the game lagged right when a mamba walked up to me and (combined with a large slowdown from Chei) I had no time to react before dying.

I got my first rune ever yesterday but succumbed  (https://underhound.eu:81/crawl/morgue/2d6/morgue-2d6-20170529-223939.txt)to invisible brain-eating moths in Spider after that. It seems like I shouldn't  have left that *Slow +Inv armor in mines...

Getting second level of demonic guardian at level 5 is probably what allowed me to survive through the early game easily. Having free 3 or 4 on your side whenever you see anything dangerous helps out a lot at that point.

Wands of clouds and scattershot help out a lot with crowd control I noticed. I guess the trade-off with the rod change was that they are now more common but require spending very limited scrolls of charging to use repeatedly.

Wow, that's a ton of great equipment you have there!

I'm relatively certain a +9 double sword will edge out Wyrmbane for extended as far as that is concerned.

TSO will give you free rN+++, and you have a lot of Invocations already, so it'll be a good step. Oka wrath is kinda wimpy unless you get constricted in a dumb spot.

I'd say... +9 Double Sword, the amulet is pretty good if you remember to use the blink and train up some Evo; if not you may want the Regen; the rings are honestly confusing me since its 2 a.m. and in general I tend to slap stuff on until I have the resistances I want; ideally you want MR+++, ++++ if possible since some pan lords have pretty powerful paralysis, rf++, rC++, rElec.

rPois is great but not exactly vital; still helpful tho. rCorr is must have for Dis, otherwise is kinda meh.

Does anyone have advice for the new Tomb? I haven't stepped in there yet but I have 14 runes so far and I don't want to accidentally do something dumb and die this far into the game.

Edit: I downloaded the offline version and messed around a bit. Here's what I've found:

...yeah, I might be going with a 14-rune game this time. Next time I might try for the golden rune, but I just don't have enough potions of curing/healing (I currently have none) or scrolls of holy word (I have 1) or AC (43, which is lower than I want it to be - a fully-enchanted set of GDA or crystal plate armor would give me 50-60 AC) and I still haven't had my first win.

Does anyone have advice for the new Tomb? I haven't stepped in there yet but I have 14 runes so far and I don't want to accidentally do something dumb and die this far into the game.
Potions of curing. 20 food. Remove curse scroll. Kill it with fire! Don't fight the malign gateway. Fire and earth eles do well... What class are you? It's not too rough for fire eles. Do you have any scattershot wands, fire wands or fire rods? Did rods get removed? I found Vestibule harder than tomb, but it's the same kinds of monsters plus ancient lich, greater mummy, and malmutate. Consider bringing rN+++ (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Torment#Torment_Resistance_and_Immunity). You'll need it if you find yourself in a pinch.

The mutation's not as bad as slime/depths, but the rot probably wrecks melee fighters. I'm not that experienced. I've gotten golden rune but never a hell rune or orb. On the bright side, I have my XL 27 and my XL 21.

I'm running a MiFi. If I had the resources to consistently heal myself, I'd probably attempt Tomb again, but I almost died just clearing the center of Tomb:2 and then again when I did Tomb:1 part 2. I have full resistances for everything (except MR - I only have 4 +s of it, but that's still a lot), which helps, but I don't think my character can quite survive Tomb.

I could have finished a little faster if I hadn't tried peeking into Tomb, but it's not a terrible time/turncount for an extended game. I'll try to win with more esoteric choices after this - MiFi of Oka/TSO is just about the easiest race/background/god combo there is and I want to try something a bit more interesting.

I'm reasonably satisfied - it ranked 50th on the leaderboards and I felt like I accomplished what I could.

Well the latest Nemelex is Mummy Arcane Marksman. Actually that, sounds impossible. Better to choose another Nemelex or try out a new class. I personally suggest hunter centaur. They are fast! Gargoyle earth elementalist is really strong lategame too.

Vine stalkers transmuters are supposed to have a great lategame too, but I find them hard. If you play vine stalker I recommend long blades (for riposte) or unarmed. Maximum auxiliary bites.

Demon spawn is an interesting race. Try out a hybrid build where you start with long blades or unarmed and then add transmutations and charms. Make it your goal to learn infuse/beastly appendage/blade hands/swiftness/shroud of golubria and then cast them before combat. Obviously not blade hands if you're going weapons.

Deep elf conjurer worshipping sif muna is a nice intro to elemental spells without having to worry about encountering a monster midgame who is immune.

Burnt that midnight oil and pulled off a 5 rune Beogh win.  It took a whole lot longer than my first, but I'm glad I'll at least finish this tournament with more than a single win.

I suppose the fun facts here are I went with amulet of faith the entire game and did a whole lot a smiting (340 times!).  Nearly died smiting the Royal Jelly to death, but I had to show those slimes who's god is boss. 

Also, very nice that the Champions are on a 3 game winning streak.

Decided I was ready to head for Zot.

A spriggan defender was waiting at the stairs. I had swiftness and shroud precasted so I ran up, blinked away, and tried to kill it.

The spriggan berserker and spriggan defender followed me and they both dodged my magma bolts, and my crystal spear got blocked, so I blinked away again and spammed my strongest evocables. A berserked death yaks & elephant appeared so I blinked a third time, the summons were six tiles away fighting my summons. I knew I'd need my last haste potion for later, and I was more than half health; so I channeled my mana, knocked back the spriggan defender with a fan of gales, and decided I was safe to cast a max range crystal spear instead of reading a teleport and spamming heal potions. What I should've done was read two scrolls of summoning. But I figured if my crystal spear got blocked I could just blink again without risking my health. A scroll of fear would place my targets too far away, so I used my best single-target damage spell.

Is dexterity the only thing that raises bolt accuracy?
I'm tilted. Spent all of depths:1 and vaults:1-4 training earth magic just so I could cast lehudib's spear. Oh and of course spriggan defender also gets high magic resist and base speed.
Wait. Berserk cuts action time by one third. Gore does 30 damage. I had 93 hp and several tiles between me and the death yak. Seriously?

Should I have spammed scroll of summoning? Like, I already used lamp of fire, box of beasts, and fan of gales. Is scroll of summoning better? I feel like phantom mirror or potion of brilliance + firestorm would've been overkill (that's how I killed royal jelly).

Obviously it depends on the spell books you're getting, but I find when I run into spriggans the best practice is always throw a cloud (freezing, fire, poison, even meph) over them.  That High EV is such a pain.

(Of course, last game I simply threw down 8 mighty orc warlords and watched them clean up, but that's obviously not a choice everyone can rely on)

Bleh. I splatted a GrFi in Gehenna after I'd gotten 6 runes (including Tomb). It was going OK until I got smited to death. Of course, I'm used to having TSO for Gehenna which makes it a lot easier.

I tried one of the characters with the most possible points for a win, as there had only been a few wins by people playing any of those backgrounds, ended up netting 442 extra points for the background.

I never thought i'd say it, but Xom is actually kinda fun.  I discovered he pairs very well with a stabber.  In the past I always tried to be tanky and durable  to survive him, but a stealthy stabber can take advantage of his love of confusion.

I almost want to deliberately splat a high-level ghost somewhere early on just to be annoying. Unfortunately if a player dies on a level other than the one the ghost is on, the ghost is still not available to be used in other game (at least from what I've read).

This was my first sucessful stabber char, and what i really learned was that you cannot count on getting stabs on sleeping monsters, a good portion will be woken up, regardless of how careful you are, so you need to start bringing online some skills that let you get stabs on monsters while they are fighting you.  Having summons helps get distract stabs, and being able to cast things like confuse and invisibility helps a lot, but even so, by the time i got to Zot 5, I still couldn't kill an orb of fire.  I tried fighting a solo one on zot 3 several times to figure out how to do it, and eventually i just did an orb tele-sprint and didn't bother killing everything, just burned as many consumables as i could to stay alive.

Next Nemelex is Kobold Air Ele. A decent combo since they like start with amulet of the gourmet mutation and gain exp fast. Wiki recommends Sif Muna. Train your dodge early and look for bouncing lightning setups.

Tried one, first amulet I put on was cursed inaccuracy, in my desperate attempts to find a remove curse scroll I stumbled upon a randart robe, which was also cursed, and -cast.

At which point I died.

Quick tip on anyone going for a VpSk:  Stay alive (full on blood) the entire time.  You don't get fancy resists, but you do get troll regen the entire time (With Regen spell that's 2 HP per aut).  Very useful.

Ogres were 'too incentivized' to use maces, apparently. I think the real culprit behind this is the meta having decided that shields are weak at the moment, when in my experience they are anything but. People weren't properly valuing the trade-off in defence that Ogres were making in order to use those GSCs.

Anyway, I see the Champions are at #15 at the moment, with a fairly small gap between them and the next few teams above. Could we see another Bay12 top ten showing? Here's hoping.

Trog gave me a GSC artifact, and I did NOT use it, no thanks. that SH wins games

@Graven I'd say if you can find any summons like Ice beasts or Mana vipers then you'll be doing well.  As far as the build, looks pretty good to me.  I'd probably just be training up shields to upgrade from the buckler and otherwise throwing XP into dodging and fighting (and of course, some magic skills if you find some decent summons).

Octopode melee with statueform and Chei is pretty satisfying, and the Shield of rF+, rC+ is a nice touch. Even nicer since I got it early as heck, and it's basically what enabled the run.

Also Olgreb's Toxic Radiance is amazing, I need to use that a lot more.

My mental picture of your octopode:

A giant toxic stone camouflaged mass of tentacles casually wandering around the dungeon and strangling everything without anyone noticing.

I just got my 2nd rune and am entering vaults.

Checking out crypts while I have 40+ blood, and Donald dropped this item:

Seems to make purple-level noise whenever it blocks. +18 though??

With a +2shield I get 36 EV, 20 SH, and rF+.
With this gong, I get 31 EV, and 36 SH. (Only have 13.9 of 15.0 shield skill.)
This goes well with my +3 amulet of reflection.
Probably really good for stair dancing when there's multiple entries to a level, or jibaiting orb guardians.

Oh man Gong, now there's a run-altering item. Just... just pretend you're playing Qazlal. It's a great shield, but it's definitely something you need to play around, kind of like the Dark Maul and such.

Also yeah DarkStar, it pretty quickly dawned on me that my Octopode is basically the main villain from a fantasy horror flick.

edit: As can be expected of a melee Octopode with statueform and Chei, I won. I tried my hand at extended but stopped at 10 runes, since extended is poop.

This was a really odd run. I found the shield of rF rC very early on, but that meant I had to put in the experience to get it to at least 10 skill. I also found a shop with 2 books of Earth, but they cost 910 gold each, which forced me to skulk around in the dungeon to levels below Lair, to duck and weave around Ugly things and Slime creatures (each of which could easily be a run-ender), and go in the first level of the Orc Mines. Fortunately I managed to collect the gold rather easily, and already had a ring of Wizardry, so I had Statueform castable in Lair.

From then on it was smooth sailing, even though my low magic resist (MR+ for the majority of mid and late-game) had me a bit worried.

But in the end, it doesn't even matter. Cuz I had statueform castable since Lair. Forsooth

The Gong is a really nice item, I was lucky enough to get one with Qazlal in my last win. Basically half of the floor showed up when they heard the storm, and even more ran over when they heard the shield. Unfortunately I didn't find it until Zot:1, so it didn't see much use.

I'm really irritated, I'm switching up from fighters and my first game going decently in the early game as a SpEn, I find "+9 Dagger of the Vendetta {flame SInv rElec}. But I already started worshipping Dithmenos at the Temple on this very floor :(

Yeah, I've found the trick with VpSk is not surviving the early game (Find a good wep and don't over train magic and you're set) but getting through the late game with it. 

Also just got banished by Donald to A:3 on my latest VpSk, then had to escape to Lvl 4 when a silent spectre and his posse got spawned in.  Wasn't very confident with only 4 teles and being level 14, but ended up getting tele'd right next to the vault, which I dug in and surprisingly cut through through a couple of dragons, liches and orge mages and grabbed the rune. Granted it was mostly chaos spawns that kept paralyzing and petrifying the vault welcoming party, but I'll take it as a win and move on.

And then a stupid ghost and a miss step (literally walked off stairs) and gah.  So frustrating.  Save me from myself.

I still find it odd that people tend to prefer Vaults to Slime as a third rune. Vaults is do-able, certainly, but it feels more vulnerable to bad luck. Slime is more or less the same each time, and the same tactics work each time. If you can dredge up rF+++ with some swaps, then Haste + Lignification + 2x Torment + Immolation + some kind of evocable = win, pretty much. I'd make sure you have a scroll of blinking afterward for safety, though.

But yeah, in general, Slime always seems safer to me than Vaults:5.

Not that I'm criticising - if you keep this performance up over the rest of the tournament Graven you'll end up in a great position. The downside, of course, is that next time I compete there's no chance of me letting you get away with not being on the Champions team ;)

Actually I think Vaults is generally a lot more predictable. Slime has legit killed extended characters of mine cuz hey look it's Dissolution and his merry band of 50 Acid Blobs and you're now at -3000 AC through you rCorr oh look here's a dozen eyes, let's get Chaos Spawny in here also a few extra arms are going to go great with your Crystal Plate.

On the other hand Vaults:5 is just a big, jolly pile of mostly physical damage, and the occasional Shadow Dragon.  Tele at the start, get in one of the corners and start slowly clearing up.

I do agree, however, Slime is generally a lot easier, so I presume it must be the horrible colour of Slime.

Also last time you had me on the champions I went winless and sulked for weeks  :P

Bah, I really thought I had this one won. Blew up an orb of fire, so I was totally without piety, which is of course when a Moth of Wrath'd Gold Dragon decided to ruin my day. Killed me exactly, no less - even a single more HP and maybe I could've gotten away somehow.

Not that it matters anymore, but damn, I'm glad I chose to buy that +4 arc blade that I saw in a shop. That thing made mincemeat out of Xtahua and Bai Suzhen.

Edit: Mind you, I did my level best to get myself killed before this - I decided that since I had rC+++, I might just give Cocytus a try. Was going great until a Hell effect on level 7 turned me into a mushroom - I had to burn virtually all of my escape tools to get out of that one.

Fk. MR++++ rN+++ is useless if you don't have stairs. The ancient mummies zoned me from the ushabtis. Can't kite while slowed. I used all my best potions at the start of the fight but I guess dispel undead ignores magic resist? Dispel undead + torment + slow chunks my health faster than I can drink healing potions while hasted.

I have the odd feeling I should be using Wyrmbane, since I have slaying and the resistances will definitely come handy. Also I got Swamp, but I'm not sure if it can eat Swamp dragons beyond +10.

edit: Arrrrghhhh died in Zot with 4 runes when two Cursed toes tormented the snot out of me, because I thought I could slime both of them, and a draconian breathed something or other at me when I was at 5 hp.

Think it may be time to stop playing, since I'm starting to die a ton with extremely winnable characters, simply because I can't stand playing online and want to get it over with as quickly as possible.

That is a scary board...  The new Tomb is super dangerous.   I've found entering with Haste And/Or teleport at least until things settle is a requirement, run to stairs, kite some mobs up with you. (also need magical mapping to find said stairs, with haste on entry)

Fk. MR++++ rN+++ is useless if you don't have stairs. The ancient mummies zoned me from the ushabtis. Can't kite while slowed. I used all my best potions at the start of the fight but I guess dispel undead ignores magic resist? Dispel undead + torment + slow chunks my health faster than I can drink healing potions while hasted.

I'm really frustrated I haven't won yet! I've had a couple more runs since that devastating loss to a berserk Orb Guardian, but no more than two runes yet. Still, I'm determined to get a win before the tourney's end!

lear's hauberk[1/1]: +27 chain mail that prevents you from wearing any other armour except cloaks and shields. Slots it takes are considered covered for the purposes of Ashenzari.

Gah dropped my GrSu right at Zot:5.  I really miss wands of haste and healing now, had enough aquirement to probably score those.

@Tegga: Totally didn't see you left messages! Hi! And yeah, even when I play tiles I have the setting on so that it shows up as ASCII in WebTiles.

This character just got its first rune, I am really liking this game so far. I've got The Shining One, an Eveningstar, and a +27 Chainmail arti that forbids boots, helms, and gloves when equipped. I'm also a Gargoyle so I have a lot of the basic resists.

Currently, my AC is 57, my SH is 19 (buffed to 27 when I activate The Shining One's shield). We'll see if it's enough to make up for the lack of good elemental resists!

RIP. I was doing super great, got out of some really super crazy spots on Zot:5, but then somehow got teleported out of the blue into two ancient liches right near the Orb. Did not last long after that, thanks to Blurry Vision from an Orb of Fire. :(

EDIT2: The random teleports were given along with Blurry Vision by an Orb of Fire, I could have lived if I had drank one of my 12 potions of mutation on my person :(

Probably the best advice that's helped me get past Lair I've been given is to spam your wands at any Hydras if you use chopping weapons. Like, a few puffs from a wand of flame as they approach is usually enough for me to smack down the rest of their HP before they get too many heads.

I'm no more likely to win this VpFe than any of my other games I've run, but At the very least I'm enjoying the fact that my hydra killing move this game is going to be animate skeleton/inner flame.  It's pretty satisfying, I won't deny.

Yeah, I usually just go for a nice flaming weapon of any kind (or failing that, any decently enchanted flail/morningstar/other unedged weapon), but in this run I was going unarmed and had just gotten Blade Hands up for Lair. I ran into a hydra, cast blade hands, pressed tab a few times, and was torn to pieces.

For hydras with a choppy class.

Wands > Nets > swap to alternate branded cross-class melee weapon that has dropped (preferably no poison) if all else fails a fast non choppy weapon with brand.

Also, 6-7 headed hydras have more HD than 4-5; and 8 = just run away and fight it another time.

Yawn.  Was playing a troll monk just to get Pious III banner and what do you know, pulled out a win.  Zin is a solid god.  Not terribly exciting except at a certain point I thought I was going to run out of food in Vaults, I guess all the speechifying makes you work up an appetite.

My current GrAE attempt, where at the very least I've got the high score running at the moment. 

Going to see if I can pull this one out for a win in about an hour or so, feel free to give any notes/advice for it.  Basically mostly melee'ing with Freezing cloud at the moment, not entirely sure if I'm going to splurge on something like firestorm or not.  Was thinking of going extended, although that'll depend on consumables after I grab a third rune and clear zot.

Also, man, I've had the frail mutation since D:3.  Early ring of wizardry and meph cloud did wonders on this run.

I was partially joking about the MiFi of Oka thing, but I'm playing my first one and it's going really well - just picked up my third rune after 2.5k turns down in the Abyss, which (aside from the scare of running into a profane servitor in my first 27 turns) was a breeze - there's a reason why this combination is suggested to new players.

Slime isn't too bad if you have a few certain things and absolutely impossible if not. You HAVE to have rCorr or you'll die, but you also need a weapon with good damage to kill slimes before they can corrode you down (which happens even with rCorr, but much more slowly). Also, you don't need to clear all of Slime, since there's no floor loot until the vault at the end. Speaking of which, you have to have a way to kill TRJ at the end. I usually go for a few scrolls of immolation and rF++/+++, but magic might work if your character already has a few good spells. I also once watched someone read a scroll of vulnerability and then use a wand of polymorph to turn TRJ into a golden dragon and then kill it, but idk if that still works in the current version.

tl;dr: have rCorr, don't clear floors, have a foolproof way to kill TRJ.

As soon as I'm like, "Yeah!! I've cleared the toughest part of the game!" I fall down three levels and get banished. Item generator decided not to give me teleport or blink scrolls or abyss exit. I shoulda just potioned and killed stuff. Also, shields are crazy-important for midgame.

Damn it I just can't get a Jiyva win - things always fall apart in Depths. Now I lost a stoneform Naga to a teleport trap into a bunch of Very Ugly Things into a Juggernaut out of the blue. I had no rF, and just a pip of rC, so I was kind of limited in my choices.

Looking over my player sheet, I just realized that I've now collected 4 barnacled runes (2 more than any other.) Funny, given that I hate the shoals.  :P

I've still got hope that I can win with this HaMo before the 11th - although even if I do manage it, I'm sure it'll turn out that win#8 happened just an hour before.

Had way too many close calls, and random tele+berserk in pan and tomb was terrifying. Tomb is really terrifying in general, got stupidly low while berserk way too many times.

Also, got down to 7hp in Zot:5 after getting all 15 runes, with no blinking scrolls or heal wounds, dying there would have been really depressing.

Well, gonna be offline tomorrow, so likely my last run of the tournament and I pulled a three rune win out of a MiIE, which gave a little bonus points as it's one of two Mi that didn't have a win (MiAM is surprisingly the other one).  Gotta love Mak with an good axe, and got very lucky and had all my resists pretty well covered in Zot.  The best part was probably clearing Elf wearing the Dragon mask, Bloodlust amulet and a randart speed branded war axe.  +9 slaying plus speed was rather hilarious, as was beserking randomly (.2 aut swings are a thing of beauty).

Win#9, FoGl stopped at 5 runes(for combo highscore).  Formcids have insane offense.  Easily my strongest (damage) character +9 triple sword with +7large shield and +9 slaying on equip.  Did so much damage, would have went for 15 but just wanted the win/hs

You know where a bad place to try and work off drain is if you don't have any negative energy resistance? The Crypt. The Crypt is a truly horrible place to do so.

Up to level 27 on my Nemlex's pick (HaMo) with 3 runes. Full Fire and Cold resistance, but the only source of rElec is a rather ho-hum artifact sword that drains me if I unequip it and causes noise... but we're up to 6/8 winners for the combo - don't know how much time I have left...

Edit: Bah, died to far too many draconians swarming me as I bounced between Zot:4 and Zot:5. Man, I really thought I had this one.

Edit^2: Eh, at least I earned us some points doing a short Zig dive.

Good job guys, I was playing around at the end (not going for a win or anything) I think I'm going to give Yred and ash a shot next tourney.  My go-to's are Owakaru, Gozag, Sif Muna, Trog(out of combo necessity, don't really like trog).  Nemelex used to be my favorite but his RNG wild magic and poly are nasty

Same, but I did have a lot of fun! And actually did learn a lot and got a lot better at the game as a whole :)

Congratulations everyone!

Got only one rune in the tourney, but my ghost managed to kill top 45th player once so I'll count that as success. (I tend to obsessively check IRC bot on the fate of my ghosts whenever I play online for some reason.)

Well, it was a pretty great tourney (Inside the top 20 ain't bad at all), though I was disappointed that I let a few multiple rune games end without a win.  Also that I didn't feel confident enough in any of my winners to go extended (Should've happened with my DDBe but I was trying to bang out an early win).  Still, 4 wins is nothing to sneeze at and I'm pretty happy that I was able to pull off a couple of high scores as well.


Great work to everyone else, as well.  I'm pretty sure this tourney featured the highest placing for every tier of Bay12 teams since at least 0.18 (wasn't able to verify that any further than .18).
