The patch has hit and so far I noticed only the pretty trees (started a new world).

What else is there of note at early stages of playing?

It's a lot laggier for me than it used to be. I don't know if that is this patch or some earlier though, it's been a long time for me.

But it's very, very laggy.

I'm having odd slowdowns as well. Something is amiss there.

I got a couple lag spikes when running around a large world, I think it's some of the new physics interactions with objects causing it.

I've had to turn on frame skip to reduce the lag myself.

Anyway, things I've found:

Graveyard biome, just place a load of graves in the same place. Ghosts, ravens and maggoty zombies spawn here, the world goes more monochrome, and fog covers the ground.
Breaking graves seems to have a chance to spawn a ghost offscreen.
Fairies sometimes appear from offscreen. I've only encountered one in a cave and it brought me to a large gold seam when I followed it before vanishing.
Gem trees drop gems and gemcorns. You can also make gemcorns from an acorn and a gem, with the gemcorn's colour being dictated by the gem.
Hitting trees with an axe sometimes makes them drop stuff. Depends on the type of tree, I found that regular trees drop acorns, wood, birds, squirrels, owls (at night), peaches, apricots and apples. Boreal trees sometimes drop cherries. Mushroom trees drop glowing mushrooms and mushroom grass seeds. Not sure about the others.
Trapped chests are now a thing. I saw the explosives, I saw the two dart traps, I figured that the gold chest spawned and broke the pressure plate in doing so. Nope.
In master mode you drop ALL held money. Also mobs holding money are far less likely to despawn so it's easier to get your gold back when you die.
Gold chests can spawn underground outside of shelters now.
Deserts can have oases in them
LILY PADS AND REEDS OH MY GOD PONDS LOOK B E A U T I F U L
Gnomes. Hostile mobs that sometimes spawn. I've killed one so no idea if they drop anything other than gold.
Underground glowing mushroom biomes are way bigger now. They also have a host of their own mobs, like spore bats and mushroom skeletons.Zombies jump to hit you. Not just when they go up or down a block, or there's something in the way. If you try to jump over them they now intercept you mid-air.

Also, is anyone planning on running a server at some point? I'll even help pay towards costs if necessary, but I couldn't run one since I lack both the know-how and commitment to do that aspect of it.

So that's what happened, of course!

Another two things I've noticed:

Automatic doors are now an option. I've turned it off so I don't let in the beasties at night
Torches stack beyond 99! A blessed day!

Slimes can fly sometimes now. They'll come in on balloons, which you can pop.

There's angry plants, which will effing murder you, violently. Well, everything on master will do that, but the dandelions at a minimum will literally one-shot you at the start, and they're ranged. Their aggro range is fortunately fairly small -- less fortunate is their projectile lifespan is very much not.

There's antlion larva. Lots. Of antlion larva.

I'm increasingly unsure I can do this without magic storage and also auto-trash. Especially with vanilla crafting lists, which has a lot more "dead" (non-material) items than I've become accustomed to (i.e. stuff I want to trash). Some other QoL mods (like vein miner or further stack expansion, I miss my 4 digit stack limits, hah) would also be nice :-\

That said, journey mode is pretty great so far. I just. Want the mods back.

E: Oh, and there's shell pile blocks in the ocean now. They're, uh. Useless other than for cosmetics, but they're there.

Status effects now change your appearance (at least, some do). Darkness covers your eyes in black goop, for example. Also, on a related note, your character blinks now.
Potion effects last longer. The builders potion lasts 45(!) minutes now.

I'm pretty happy with this update. If the performance issues can be ironed out it'll be damn near perfect.
EDIT: If you see a small scattering of iron (probably lead on worlds with it) near the surface, dig it up. It'll lead to a large vein of iron.

I wish there was a way to choose all-old metals or all-new metals rather than random chance. That has bugged me ever since it was implemented long ago!

For once, i seem to be That Guy who does not havе any lag at all.

This (?) update has made me want to install mods for the first time. Namely, the mod that removes animated critters in the background (floating slimes, airships(!?), etc). They are an eyesore.
