Patience? It's pretty much inevitable but I don't think you can force it.

Do I have to embark on an evil biome?

You definitely do not need to be in an evil biome for vampires to show up.

They'll appear as migrants, so it's a mere waiting game.

Wish I had a vampire right about now...

You could try a 1x1 pit with the vampire locked in it, sitting on top of an upright spike trap with either a wooden spike or a wooden training spear, then throw food on top of him and see if it gets coated when you trigger the spike.

And I don't think the water method has been tested yet...
I just tested it, it works!

I built sealed the known vampire into a 1x1 room with an upright spike and killed her with it then filled the pit with water, built a well over it, and banned all booze. The dwarves that drank out of the well were instantly turned into vampires. The dropping the corpse in apparently doesn't necesarilly wash the body so the blood can stay on them. This way seems more consistent.
Trapped!

"The fools in the fortress must have figured me out!" thought Urist McTotallyNotAVampire.  She turns around her tiny cell, solid walls to every side of here and a open roof above, too high to climb. She kneels down, examining the floor hoping for a weak spot to begin digging her escape.

Pawing about the floor, her hand catches on a slight indentation. Muttering to herself, she tries to pry it open, "What is this? Wait is this a tra-" Her words are cut short as a spike impales the full length of her body. Her sweet, precious life blood begins to ooze from her multitude of wounds. The world grows dark and her mind fades.

Can vampires drink barrels of animal blood and also does a well like this done with a normal dwarf produce drinkable bllod for a vampire (probbily not). I was wondering as it would be veary hard to sustain a large number of vampires  on living dwarfs.

Do vampires actually need to feed or do they just do it for the lols?  Also does anyone know if they can drink sleeping goblins or elves?  Modding would be required to make those sleep, I think.

I can't say for sure, but I've had a couple vampires locked up in a room for over a year now and they seem to be doing just fine without blood. I've heard they aren't very effective in combat if they don't have access to booze, though.

Either way, it seems like everything would be just fine if all of your dwarves were vampires. They wouldn't kill each other and would have plenty of alcohol. Now that we have confirmation that it works, I'm going to promptly work on converting my 202 non-vampire citizens.  :D

Wooo.   I started a game in an evil biome (half terrifying and half haunted) and after a wave of immigrants bodies started popping up drained of blood (for some reason the bodies aren't resurrecting as undead as fast as a different game a few days ago, but I digress).  I isolated my suspects in a quarantine burrow and discovered the vampire pretty quickly when the others became thirsty and the others did not (helped that she was a 125 year old with dozens of affiliations and hadn't had a drink recently).

I buried her alive in my special made vampire palace, problem solved, or so I thought.  That's when more bodies started showing up.  After another round of quarantine I identified a second vampire who was promptly buried alive as well.

Then another body popped up.  This is getting ridiculous, I thought.  Are all my freaking immigrants vampires?

Then the Queen arrived and my fort became a mountain home...  Only she was a Vampire queen!

No wonder I'm getting so many blood suckers.  My civilization must be a bunch of blood suckers.

I'm contemplating weather or not to taint my water supply and turn them all into vampires now.  Might be fun and useful to have dwarfs that don't have to eat, drink, or sleep.  But can these vampires have babies?

I have had 3 vampires locked in a room for 7 years so they don't require food to live. They have only one unhappy thought about not remembering their last drink... Which is hilarious.

My civilization also has a vampire queen! I wonder if vampires are somehow more likely to become nobility than other dwarves...
Makes sense, since they live forever. Dwarven king dies of age. Eldest son becomes king. Eldest son dies. Eldest grandson becomes king. Eldest great-grandson becomes a vampire, current king dies, vampire becomes king forever.

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.
