General Discussion / Things that made you Nope today
« on: November 09, 2016, 01:28:22 am »
Spoiler: Inspired by Yoink (click to show/hide)

In any case, thread guidelines:

1: Same as the forum guidelines
2: Uh, stay on topic?
3: Please try to be optimistic. Where there is nope, there may one day be hell yeah.
4:No starting cults around presidents/presidential candidates

The old packing plant burns beautifully. The Firemen had done their job well, suppressing the burgeoning printing press operating out of it. The haunted screams of its operators emanate from inside as they are burned alive. The few survivors of the blaze are gunned down by the assault rifles of the Death Squad. Those passing by dare not express any interest in the proceedings, fearful of being branded thoughtcriminals by the omnipresent Ministry of Love. As you watch, unable to tear yourself away, a man, burned flesh dripping from their ruined face, arm-drags himself towards you. The Death Squad turn their guns on him, peppering him with bullets. As the last life fades from his eyes, the man looks you in the eye and speaks, voice a gurgling whisper:

It is not too late. You can still change the future. Remember this. Remember me.

The badly burned man convulses, silently crying for their mother, and dies.

You wake up, gasping from the vivid dream. In that moment, reeling from your horrific vision of the future, a lifetime's worth of oppression by the Conservatives crystallizes into rebellion. You WILL change the world and bring Liberalism to this forsaken country. That much is certain. But other things are less so. You can only faintly remember your childhood

Alright, this will be a playthrough of Liberal Crime Squad version 4.07.0. This will be a sort of odd hybrid between a LP and a Suggestion Game. Participants will vote on the general course of action of the Founder and may get a character named after them. You may more directly decide what "your" character does, within reason[EG:I, Arcvasti, want my character to be an androgynous hippie computer hacker with high Int].

Semi-unrelated question: Which subforum should I even put this thread in? FG & RP? Play with your Buddies? Is Curses fine?

General Discussion / An interesting reflection on labeling
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:25:24 pm »
I was looking through a Pathfinder sourcebook I received for Christmas and I read an interesting section on choosing alignment:

Quote from: Paraphrased from Pathfinder rulebook
There are two ways to choose your characters alignment:

A) Choose an alignment from the nine presented below. Adapt your character accordingly. For example, you might decide your character is lawful good. The entry on lawful good tells you that a lawful good character respects lawful authority and helps people.

B) Choose character traits and then choose the alignment that coincides with them. You might decide you're playing someone who doesn't care for restrictions and often disregards inconvenient laws but has a good heart anyways. Looking through the entries below, you see that Chaotic Good fits this and put it down on your sheet.

In short:

Method A) You are Lawful Good. Therefore you respect authority and help people.

Method B) You respect authority and help people. Therefore you are Lawful Good.

The latter method is probably the best way to degamify the alignment system and is the one I prefer.

And then I thought:

Couldn't you also apply the above rules to other things?

For example:

Political opinions:

A) Bay12 is largely liberal[Citation needed], therefore the collective opinion is _____.

B) The collective opinion is ______, therefore Bay12 is largely liberal.

I've seen people be surprised that a fair number of Bay12ers hold an opinion different that one which is liberal, probably because they applied rule A[Bay12 is liberal, therefore Bay12 thinks ____] instead of rule B[Bay12 thinks ____, therefore Bay12 is liberal]

Religion:

A) I am Catholic/insertotherreligionhere, therefore I believe ______

B) I believe ______, therefore I am Catholic/insertotherreligionhere

Something I've noticed is that organized religions claim homogenity, yet, at least in most cases I've seen, the opinions of individual believers on their own religion vary widely. It isn't "I am Catholic, so I believe ____, _____ and ______", but "I believe _____ and _____, so I am Catholic."

Anime:

A) I like anime, therefore I like this anime, this anime and this anime

B) I like this anime, this anime and this anime, therefore I like anime.

Gender[<-It was inevitable]:

A) I am a [wo]man, therefore I am masculine[feminine]

B) I am masculine[feminine] therefore I am a [wo]man

This last one is a touchy subject, but I think its important that method B be applied, rather then method A. A fair[Citation needed] amount of the time, the two amount to the same thing anyways, but Method B seems to me to be a better way of defining it.

I'm fairly sure you can apply this to most labels. Does one hold an opinion because one defines oneself as something or does one define oneself as something because one holds an opinion? This is always an important question to ask oneself.

I'd like to hear everyone's[Except the trolls, kitchenbots and people who I disagree with. ] opinions{The latter are welcome to participate, I just won't necessarily agree with you.} on the above. Please note that I may rule discussions which are inadequately flameproof or relevant are no longer welcome in this thread. If this ruling is violated, I'll bring in Toady. This SHOULDN'T be a problem, but it is.

Life Advice / Unencrypting Data
« on: October 17, 2014, 03:04:41 pm »
As I may have mentioned in the RAGGEEEEEEEE thread, my netbook's files have been encrypted by the Cryptowall 2.0 virus and they request 500$ to unencrypt it. Is there any way to unencrypt it another way?[<--I very much doubt it] Is it likely that the perpetrators will be caught and the private keys released to the public?[<--Additional doubt] Is there any way to reverse the computer to a prior state?[I think I've seen that done once.] I haven't actually PAID for anything on my netbook, its primarily full of freeware indie roguelikes, so I could just re-download basically everything with some effort. But I DO have some essential stuff for an IRL D & D campaign on it and would really like it back. Not to mention saves for my community forts.

Hello everyone. **Arcvasti waves to everybody with his adorable little salamancer hand** This is going to be a masterwork community fortress with one of their lesser played races: the Kobolds. Kobolds don't receive a lot of time in the spotlight, despite deserving it a lot. This fortress is sort of aimed to illustrate how a new player might learn how to play kobolds well and use their numerous potent features well. As such, there will be detailed explanations of the ways kobolds are different then dwarves and parts will be able to double as guides. I will be using Masterwork V5.01, with the emigration script disabled because it needs more balancing and is really annoying at the moment. I will be using Masterwork V5.09 for the new fort. All other settings are as default. Bolding requests are welcome. If you had a bold in the last fort, you're still on the list.

This topic has been moved to DF Community Game & Stories because Meph feels it fits better in there.

After noting the absolute lack of community warlock forts, I have taken it upon myself to create one. Nothing that special about the embark or world gen and I have no real conducts I'm restricting myself to yet.[Although suggestions are welcome] I will however try to roleplay the warlock mentality as best I can. [EX: Preferring ethereal items over any other, giving all the warlocks special rights and privileges and building a black tower to the sky]
