Title: [IC] Wheel of Time Emblem - Chapter 1: A Glimpse of Thunder
Post by: Chevaleresse on October 31, 2020, 01:56:46 pm
~OOC thread~ (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=177199.0)

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose over the Spine of the World. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

The wind rushed down the slopes of the mountain as if fleeing some great horror. It flitted past Cairhien, nimbly weaving through towers that still bore the fresh scars of war. Down the River Alguenya it fled, leaving the fair city to pass over merchants and weary wanderers as they traveled to their numberless destinations. It soared over the beautiful city of Caemlyn, proud and prosperous, and ran down the road, where it tweaked the green-fringed cloak of a woman with red hair and an ageless face, causing her to pull it more tightly around herself where she sat on her horse.

"It's unseasonably cold. I hope the winter doesn't come as soon as it seems to be threatening to."
"Andor's farmers have been through worse. Winters have been harsh before; if it comes to it, people know how to make do." The man riding next to the woman didn't so much as glance at her as he spoke, instead scanning the area continuously. Despite his age, his movements seemed to carry some lethal grace to them, like a predator always poised to strike.
"If you say so, Sefton. I've never had a Talent for predicting the weather, anyway." She paused, thinking of something. "Where are Hayate and Ercole? It's taking them far too long to get back from their errands."
"You would know better than I. Eirin, this business of secret-keeping doesn't make my job easier."
"The same goes for bringing up secrets in public," Eirin admonished. "Now, what was this favor you wanted to do for Alvienne and Lydia?"
"Just a bit of exercise for the newer mercenaries. I don't feel comfortable letting any sisters wander about the countryside with untested steel to protect them." He lowered his voice further before continuing. "Especially a White sister, of all things."
"I see. Well, I suppose I do share some of your concerns, even if I think you're underestimating Lydia. She may not be the most deft with her weaves, but she's not weak, and I think her arms might suffice where the Power may not." She chuckled. "Some would say it's unseemly, but I do regret never being able to get her onto the topic of how she stays like that while practically living in the library."
"The weight of knowledge can be literal." Eirin snorted. "Leaving that aside, it seems we're pausing to let the horses rest. I believe now is the best time."
"Alright then, have your fun. Hayate and Ercole should be back soon enough to make it to your little sparring match." Sefton swung himself off his horse, then offered a hand to Eirin to allow her a more graceful passage off her own. She wandered off to speak with the merchant in charge of the caravan, while her Warder moved towards where the other newest members of the impromptu group were gathered. A wagon intended to hold ore from Baerlon currently provided transportation to those in the group without horses, though perhaps a bit less luxuriously than some of them might have liked. The wind whispered through the leaves of the trees that bracketed the road as Sefton approached.
"You four. Are you doing anything important right now?"

//Baronel, Camira, Andre, and Dola are in!

Meanwhile, one unusual passenger had managed to get a somewhat more comfortable seat beside the merchant. He claimed some long-lost noble blood, and carried himself well enough that, with his fine-enough clothes, he could pass for a member of a lower House without much issue.
"I have to thank you again, Lady Calderon de Mendez, for coming along with me on this expedition. I'm sure the partnership between myself and your father will be fruitful. So long as that bastard Risan doesn't sell me garbage ore again. . ." The man's voice was somewhat higher than one might expect from someone of his stature, but not so much as to be offputting. He glanced to the side, catching something in the corner of his eye. "Ah, it looks like Lady Eirin needs to speak with me. I know how you feel about her sort, so I won't keep you."

//Hortensia is in!

At the rear of the group was a situation that many men would find uncomfortable. The gleeman headed in the same direction as the caravan had found himself isolated with two Aes Sedai. There was no actual danger to a man left alone with the women, of course, but that didn't stop many from feeling uneasy regardless. He couldn't channel, but stories of Red sisters sweeping sons and fathers away weren't exactly unknown to one that gathered tales.

//Lydia, Alvienne, and Thane are in!

Note: Lydia, Alvienne, Thane, and Hortensia will not participate in the prologue map.

Thanes was not exactly what would be considered happy right now. However, as a performing man, he couldn't let it show. His face betrayed none of his unease, something he could credit to his upbringing, not that he would ever admit it, and his actions were loose and easy. A quick check on his harp, still tightly packaged at his feet, and then he quickly pulled out a few brightly colored balls from under his cloak. No man would be exactly comfortable around Aes Sedai, especially not being flanked by two of them, but he wasn't about to let that beat him. Quickly tossing the balls up into the air, he soon had them spinning in an intricate pattern, and flashed them both a grin.

"Well then, a lovely morning, ladies. It seems that we are to all be traveling together for the near future, no? Perhaps I could offer you a story in this lull. Perhaps a song? Even Aes Sedai must enjoy the delight of a gleeman."

Within the holdings of the wagon, a young woman sat with her arms folded, seemingly indifferent to the cold as she scanned the treeline, eyes retaining a sharpness one would expect out of any experienced warrior. Once she had been approached for this opportunity, Camira was fully expecting to be stuck with a trip through the countryside, one filled with peace, quiet, and a relaxing atmosphere one didn't find often in her line of work. Mostly for the fact that she was being hired alongside a few other mercenaries, and from her experience in the business, any bandit group that decided to raid a caravan would be deterred by one with enough of a defense. Depending on if there was a bandit group in these parts that was currently active, since being robbed was still a somewhat uncommon event.

Thankfully, partway through their little journey, the caravan she found herself in had come to a short break, and one of the men who had hired her had taken the time to approach them, causing the Borderlander to tilt her head in his direction,

Lydia turns her head to face Thane and stares at him, expressionless, for just long enough to make it feel rather awkward, and then a little longer, before finally speaking.  Her voice is very even, holding little tone to help him deduce what her expressions aren't giving away.

(https://i.imgur.com/a8J9Qp3.png) "Yes, I would be interested in your stories.  As a Gleeman, you must have travelled far, and visited many places in the world," She reaches down into her purse, and pulls out a charcoal pencil and a battered notebook, which she opens to a little past half-way, "It is through stories we learn of places and events that we have not ourselves witnessed.  I would be honored and delighted to hear one of yours."

"Sure, I'm down."
Dola had been bored.

This wasn't a new state of affairs. She'd been bored for a very long time, ever since she'd stopped off to get a job. Going on the road was something she hadn't done in a while; she'd needed to, her coffers were emptier than some certain vaults she'd been to.

She had a feeling about what was going on here.

Sitting and waiting for so long like this made Baronel uncomfortable. It pricked away at his constant instinct to move even though, as he constantly reminded himself, he was moving. Just not on his own power.

The sensation of the wagon stopping did nothing to ease him. Nor did rewrapping the leather gauntlets around his forearms for the umpteenth time. He was midway through time number umpteenth-and-one when that man - Sefton was his name -  made himself known at the back of the wagon.

While an extended pause in the middle of their journey was the absolute last thing Baronel wanted to be doing at that moment, helping with some sort of task would be the perfect thing to get his mind off of it.

"I am not," he says after a brief pause and flips his hood down. Keeping it on all the time was a habit he'd made in isolation and hadn't quite broken during his time with the group. "What can we help you with?"

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "As would I!"

If the White sister was stern and stolid, then the Blue was just the opposite.  As soon as Thane offered to entertain the two, the eyes of the Aes Sidai lit up, matching a bright smile as she clapped her hands together.  Alvienne, it seemed, was more than happy to make up for Lydia's deficit in the joy and excitement the gleeman might have expected from his usual audiences.  Maybe this wouldn't be so awkward after all?

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "Ah, but what to have you recite?  Long as it has been since I have had the pleasure of a gleeman's talents, it would be remiss of me not to pick something that might appeal to my sister."

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "Hm."

She closed her eyes, thinking.  A bare few moments later, her smile widened.

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "Oh, I know something she would find interesting."

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "Could you sing 'The Iron Lance of Caemlyn?'"

The smile never left her face as she said it.  But even so, something in her tone sounded almost she was making a joke at his expense.  Or, perhaps, Lydia's expense.  Given what the gleeman knew of that song...

Well.  It might have been a bit of a surprise to hear an Aes Sedai request it.

Hortensia would not have been dragged onto an outing like this had her father not put her up to it. It was a chance to do a noblewoman's duty, to expand their name and their relations. It would help her mother to clear away the slander that had tarnished her name... and by extension, push that terrifying suspicion off of herself. For most of the journey, Hortensia simply kept herself silent and did not even dare to look at the kinds of people she had to travel with. It was bad enough to travel with commoners, even if they were merely bodyguards assisting her on her journey, but to have not one, not two, but three Aes Sedai so close by...

Her heart palpitations were stopped by the merchant speaking to her— she turned to him with a gentle smile. Hortensia was quite good at hiding the fears that lay within her, as etiquette tended to teach her. Not a single shred of doubt, anxiety, and that touch of loathing remained on that sweet face of hers.

"It is quite alright, Sir Isidro." Her hands folded in her lap— they had been preoccupied with fiddling with her necklace previously, but she did not want her posture to ruin her words. "For the sake of the partnership between you and my father, I will tolerate our... traveling companions as long as it is necessary." She had to hold back a wince from saying 'companions' to describe the others. "But please, do not mind me. I will be right here whenever you need me." The more she could stay away from the commonfolk and the Aes Sedai, the better.

Thanes raised an eyebrow at the request of the Aes Sedai, as a cheeky grin spread across his face.

"The Iron Lance of Caemlyn, huh? Interesting choice, Aes Sedai, interesting choice. Well, if you're sure."

He glanced around, eyes settling on the rather stuffy looking noble on the wagon. Giving her a once over, his grin spread wider. Tairen, he suspected, and an extra stuffy one at that. Well, he wasn't just here to entertain two Aes Sedai. He was here for everyone. The balls stopped their intricate path through the air, and were quickly stored back beneath his cloak. Reaching down, he opened up the stiff leather container at his feet, and pulled out the intricately carved harp and settled it onto his lap. A small stretch and he was ready. He would have to make sure to sing loud enough for everyone to hear.

"The Iron Lance of Caemlyn, a story of a beautiful city, and the dashing knight who sought to breach her walls... Yes, a fine choice, and one I know well."

A flourish of his hands, a quick strum across the strings of the harp, and then he launched into the song.

"Years ago in a delightful country, with hills of green and skies of blue,
Could be found a brilliant city, whose walls shone pure and true.
Many knights came to fight to breach her walls,
But not one of them was strong enough to enter her halls.
Her defenders stood strong, to protect her virtue,
For this city was prized, but only to view.

He strummed his harp, playing an extended interlude between the verses, glancing again at the noble woman, waiting to see her reaction.

To keep herself occupied, Hortensia opted to watch the scenery and drown out the noise of the rabble in the background— at least nature was quite nice when she got out and saw it. It provided well enough of a distraction... until something started to catch her attention. Her head perked up on instinct— was that music? Singing? She was quite fine with the occasional instrumental, but the singing was just disruptive— she briefly turned her head around to the source... of course there had to be a gleeman in the group, as if three Aes Sedai weren't enough to test her patience to its limits. It was getting frustrating to listen to, enough that her hands reflexively began to jerk up to her head— she just as quickly jerked her hands down to her lap and turned her head away back to the scenery.

It's fine, he's done, he's just going into more instrumentals and that should be fine... honestly, the foolish things that these people can find as entertainment...

"As you may now, Lydia and Alvienne are planning on accompanying this caravan for some time. I don't mistrust you, but I want to ensure I'm not leaving two sisters with a group that can't protect them." He looked over each member of the party, evaluating the material he had before him. Each one seemed to get the same amount of attention, and the Warder betrayed little in his expression.
"I've already spoken with Isidro and his normal guards. I'd like to test your prowess while we rest the horses. As soon as Ercole and Hayate get back, we'll begin. Assuming this is not an issue, of course."

"All right, then. I suppose I don't have to offer much advice in her regard. . ." The mistrust in his voice was evident; Tear was not the only place where many felt nervous around the mysterious wielders of the One Power.
"Lord Isidro. Lady Hortensia." She made the barest hint at a curtsy; it wasn't clear if this was deliberate or simply a function of the less-than-pleasant weather. "I trust that my presence hasn't been overly burdensome."
"Not at all. And there's no need to flatter me with titles, though I do appreciate the sentiment. Has there been some problem?"
"Must there be a problem for me to speak to my gracious host?" She raised an eyebrow; the question made the merchant squirm a bit under her gaze.
"I suppose not."
"No, I was just wondering if you'd seen a particular sort of curio. . ."

Baronel returns Sefton's gaze with his own steely expression, repressing an old urge to jut out his chin and puff up his chest as he does. As hard as he tried to leave them behind, some aspects of his old life still clung to him.

"Caution is only natural for a man like yourself. I see no problem with it - I trust that we four will demonstrate we're quite enough to keep our friends of the priory safe."

"And this test of prowess; I don't think I should have to ask, but it shall be bloodless, correct?" Without thinking he rubs at his left arm, the one scarred by flame from his elbow to the back of his hand.

As Hortensia looked over to see what the noise was about, Thanes met her eye and then gave her a wink. A few more intricate chords, and he launched into the next verse,

"The tales of this city, of shining beauty
spread wide, along with her guardian's cruelty.
Who could thrust through her gates,
Strong and sturdy but as beautiful as lace.
Upon her pure white walls, smooth and soft
many a man have found their lives lost.

This time he only played a short series of notes between the chorus. He knew that even if she didn't want to be, the noble would be listening now. He'd gotten her attention, whether she wanted to admit it or not.

"A knight of Camelyn, strong and fair
in an inn heard of beauty so rare.
'I will pierce these walls of white
With iron lance of the knight.'
He bragged of his lance, sturdy and strong,
His weapon lean, hard and long.
'No wall can withstand this lance,' he cried
'This city so prized will be taken, on my pride.'"

Lydia scribbles rapidly away in her notebook, nodding occasionally, as she follows the song.

(https://i.imgur.com/a8J9Qp3.png) "History is fascinating, isn't it?  And songs allow far more accurate recall in an oral tradition.  I do enjoy attending these performances so."

Not that anything in her tone or expression would suggest enjoyment, but she is keeping her comments at a respectful, quiet whisper.

For a moment, Camira simply stared at Sefton, raising her eyebrow in response to his demand for a demonstration. At least, for a moment, before she pushed herself from where she sat, keeping her gaze locked onto Sefton's,

"Honestly, if you had any doubts on my capabilities, I would've gladly put said doubts to rest. I had a few individuals whom I owed a rematch to in Caemlyn, and could've demonstrated there."

"... But no. I'll go along with your request, any excuse to test my sword arm is good enough for me, and I assure you that you will not find me lacking. I doubt we'll go far enough to lethally wound, but I would suggest going until first blood, or until one party surrenders from the duel. That way it is fair, and most importantly, honorable." she stated, expression still sharp and focused as it normally was... Yet at the same time, it seemed a bit brighter than it had been during the trip thus far

Alvienne didn't bother hiding her amusement at the White sister's response.  Instead, she merely clapped her hands along with the tune, waiting to see what reaction she'd get next--whether from Lydia herself, or from the noble she spotted peering back from the wagon.

Hortensia was still on the verge of attempting pleasantries, so she still gave a small nod of acknowledgment at Eirin. She attempted to tune the two's conversation out. She had done her absolute best to keep her composure, but she couldn't help herself when she turned her head away with a somewhat inaudible 'hmph' as the gleeman saw fit to wink at her. Did he think her some floozy willing to just throw away her time to gawk? Now, she was trying to keep her mind focused on the conversation, but even that was dull enough to still keep the song from worming into her head. What was it even talking about, anyway? Why were these so called beautiful walls being pierced by a lance, anyway? It was...

...Suddenly, the small bits of education that were given to her as well as her knowledge of the common folks' disgusting fascination with certain functions that should normally be left solely to reproduction. Now, an audible gasp came out of her, her hands clasping around her mouth as she looked away, now thoroughly annoyed.

"To sing that in the presence of nobility...! Disgusting...!" Hortensia muttered to no one but herself. She might have complained to Isidro had he not been busy suffering through his own pains.

"A test of prowess? You know, I'm not exactly a mercenary."
Despite Dola's athletic frame, it was true. Fighting wasn't on her list of priorities in recovering rarities, just a tool in an arsenal that she was not especially good at using. She was good enough at it to have survived thus far -Dola liked to think that she was handier with her fists than your average civilian- but she wasn't exactly an apparent blademaster or some weathered soldier.

"If I were to wager on it, I'd say it's because we're a good sight cheaper than professional guardsmen would be." It's not a joke; from the sound of it, he thinks it's quite sensible. "No need to find the best when good enough is right in front of you."

"And, at the same time, it's a good idea to make sure 'good enough' can at least pull its own weight when push comes to shove."

"If I were in charge of who was sent with each Aes Sedai that left the tower, every sister would have at least three Warders and a detachment of fifty or so soldiers. As it is now, I'm not the one who chose you, Isidro did." His gaze shifted to Camira, the Warder's eyes seeming to pierce through her. "If you're that talented, then taking down an old man like me should be simple enough."

"I can't say it does. I don't typically deal in such things. I could point you to a man in Tear who does, however, or you could ask that Domani woman we took on recently. She seemed fairly knowledgeable about the Age of Legends."
"Did she now? You have a great deal of interesting company, Isidro." Despite the topic, the Aes Sedai looked directly at Hortensia as she spoke, a twinkle of something in her eye. "It's a shame we'll be parting ways so soon."

Hortensia was already now in a pretty sour mood because of the music, and her attempts at trying to pay attention to the conversation were equally making her sour— the way that Eirin looked at her, after Hortensia managed to steal a glance, made her immensely uncomfortable. Not just because of... her secrets, but just the idea— were they all just on some kind of big recruitment scheme? If that Aes Sedai dared to approach her...

The nerve of these people...! Hortensia thought to herself, now opting to turn her nose up and just look at the top of the wagon.

Baronel gestures to Sefton at the man's reply, as if that settled any and all problems the others could possibly have. He represses a grimace at the idea of each and every Aes Sedai leaving the White Tower with such an entourage. Though plainly silly, it was oddly terrifying when taken into the head.

"Well, there you have it. It was our friend the merchant who decided we were good enough."

He rests an arm on his bent knee and gazes at the warder.

"I'm ready when you are."

"I'm not a fool to think that age doesn't do anything other than dull one's skill. I do agree with your point however, while Isidro has a potential eye for talent, he does bear the same amount of common sense as others in his position. Let us hope that your two scouts make it back soon" she replied bluntly, offering Sefton a simple shrug. In a way, she did agree with him, were they any closer to the Borderlands, she would make sure that they would be marching with far more than a dozen or so people.

He couldn't help but feel slightly disgruntled that he was having to play this song on his beautiful harp. This song was really better suited for a smoky inn, fiddler and piper behind him, a crowd of drunks in front. Still, no accounting for taste and it was worth the chance to tweak a stuffy noble's nose.

"And so the knight set out to ride,
To conquer this city, to protect his pride.
Along his journey, many cities called to him
To thrust his lance through walls so slim.
But none could sway him from his path
To face the city and her guardians wrath.

He could continue this song, there were as many verses as gleemen could think of verses, but most of them were in the same vein. Better to just jump ahead to the climax of the song.

"And so the knight arrived at the city,
His prize awaiting, walls shining pure and pretty.
Her guardians cried out, they would leave him shamed
A warning to others, his head out in the field framed.
But unlike those before him so bold and true,
Who charged out, a move they all rue,
The brave knight if Caemlyn waited to dark
To sneak forward with no light except a spark.
The city called to him, a quiet song on the wind
'She wants to be freed," he said as he grinned."

"I wouldn't necessarily call Hayate and Ercole scouts. Speaking of." The Warder raised a hand in greeting; from behind the group, two men seemed to practically fade out of the nearby woods, color-shifting cloaks making them ever-unsettling to look at. One of them was a wiry Borderlander, who might have seemed apt to blow away in the wind if it wasn't clear that every inch of him was lean muscle, while the other was a tall Illianer with a laid-back look. "Eirin is willing to wait for a moment while we do this test."

"Did she now?" The Borderlander spoke with a teasing tone. "What did you have to do to convince her of that?"

"I do be wondering that myself."

"I was sufficiently annoying, of course. Now come on." He gestured to a wooded area just off the road. "You four are going to come at myself, Ercole, and Hayate, along with a few of the longer-serving guards. 'Kill' me, and I'll consider you adequate protection for the other two sisters. And please, don't hold back for my health. Any questions?"

"Ah, seems like the show is starting. Won't you sit with me and watch the men fight, Miss Calderon de Mendez?"

"None from me."

Baronel pushes himself to his feet and steps down from the cart. The feeling of pressure in his chest, the tightness that had been slowly growing since their wagon stopped, suddenly became much harder to ignore. No matter how much he tried to tell himself that everything was going to be all right and that nobody wanted to shed any of his blood, he simply could not ease his worry - the thought of his secret being exposed could not be quelled by reason.

However, if nothing else, he was still decent at putting up a front of bravado. An old favorite pose comes to mind; Baronel stands himself up straight, sets his feet apart, and thuds a fist into his palm.

"Let's get started."

"None at all. The terms of the duel are clear" Camira replied, placing a hand on her sword's hilt as she took stock of her to be opponents. Obviously, Sefton would be the most trouble, but the rest, although not nearly as imposing as the Warder, were still possible threats. One she could recognize as a fellow Borderlander, albeit from a different area then she, which meant that they had someone who, without a doubt, had their life risked at some point. Which was a good sign of someone's prowess. The other three that would fight alongside her seemed... Capable enough, allowing her to not have to worry about being dragged down and distracted by them trying to keep up.

Who knows, she might just end up enjoying this.

With that, Camira also hops down from the wagon, heading over to the chosen spot and taking up her own battle position: Foot back, body faced slightly to the side, hand gripped around her sheathed blade. Then she merely waited, ridding herself of intrusive thoughts in order to focus on the upcoming fight.

"The knight charged forth in the dark of night
his lance bursting forth, ready for the fight.
He crashed into her, his lance arm strong,
his eyes full of her beauty, his heart full of song.
And there his lance pierced through her gates,
thrusting through as if ordained by the fates.
His battle won, his prize the fair city,
but he could not settle, more the pity.
He rode off into the sunset, leaving her gates asunder
For he gained what he wanted, had his plunder.
So beware the knights, who come in the night,
For though their smiles pretty and armor bright,
Their lances pierce and leave their prize alone
Leaving a city cast down, left with only one bone.

He ended the song with a flourish, the notes echoing brightly in the quiet before the fight. He gave a small sitting bow, with a wink at the Aes Sedai who had requested the song in the first place.

The back of an ore wagon wasn't uncomfortable for all of the mercs given how loudly Andre was snoring. Thankfully it did not take much to wake the man nor fill him in with what was happening.

(https://i.imgur.com/S3UAdD1.png) "I can't say it makes sense but I can't see any reason to say no either. Can't promise that nobody won't get hurt either. Might even be me! Bwahahaha." Clearly the ox of a man had no objections either as he planted his feet firmly and got ready for this practice spar. At least he was well-rested.

Hortensia was absolutely abhorred having to listen to every bit of that song— her calm exterior had quickly become frazzled and immensely flushed. To top it all off, now Eirin was bothering her. If every time she went out she was going to be bombarded with commoner perversions and Aes Sedai clinginess, she was just going to assemble the largest public relations team she possibly could for all of her affairs involving this absolute nonsense.

"I am perfectly content with not watching these people throw their sticks and stones at each other for amusement, thank you." Her politeness was definitely slipping as a result of Thanes' song, on top of her obviously general lack of respect for the Aes Sedai.

Lydia finishes writing her last note, and closes her notebook with a crisp snap, stowing both it and her pencil within her purse, before clapping quietly and quickly.

(https://i.imgur.com/a8J9Qp3.png) "A wonderful performance, especially on such short notice.  Thank you, Gleeman, I do so enjoy the histories."

There is absolutely zero indication as to whether Lydia knows this is a bawdy tavern song or thinks it's a genuine historical piece, not in her consistently stoic expression nor her level voice.  It is very possible that this song's story might find its way into a history at some point in the future.

She responded to the bard's wink with a cheerful smile and a wink of her own, before she nodded over to the noble entourage ahead.

The mercenaries ready a defensive line against the incoming guards, who decide to focus their attacks on Baronel.

Merchant Axeman B moves to H11.

The axeman, somewhat overconfident due to his numerical advantage, underestimates the strength of the high ground, but the height difference makes it difficult for Baronel to land his reprisal.

The others, unable to get into proper striking positions, simply move to reinforce their wayward ally.

Just because there was nothing to do but sit around and wait without even a book to keep her entertained, Hortensia tried to watch the ensuing battle. However, it managed to do nothing for her but make her even more whiny.

(https://i.imgur.com/b9xUsoe.png) "Is this what these people find entertaining? Absolutely barbaric..." Her eyes wandered to the inn— ready to park herself inside and at least get some alone time away from all of this nonsense... Until the imagery of the filth that such a cramped and miserable little inn must have in all of its rooms. Hortensia shuddered and instead opted to just suck it up and watch the show.

Hortensia's initial focus on the battle had made things easy for Thane. He'd made his way behind her, leaning against the side of the wagon, just below the lip so she wouldn't be able to easily notice he was there if she didn't look. As she complained, he grinned, then popped up, strumming a chord on his harp.

"No, I'm not sure they would call it entertaining exactly. More like a way of life. If you were looking for their entertainment, you must look to me. A song, a poem, perhaps juggling? I have many... skills. For entertaining you see. Plenty of ways to make you feel good."

He winked at her, and prepared to duck.

Hortensia was already on edge and less than pleased that a commoner was trying to explain a 'way of life' to attempt to justify their crude barbarism— refusing to make any sort of eye contact as he spoke up. However, his further words just made her scoff. If she wanted music, she would look to the finest musicians back home; the ones that would actually provide her with proper atmosphere and entertainment. After even that, however, her eyes narrowed as she listened to his last words. Her mind wandered back to that cacophony of music from before, and her face was tensed up in a horrified blush.

(https://i.imgur.com/b9xUsoe.png) "Y-You fiend! You brute— how dare you speak that way to me!?" She was quick to whirl around and attempt to slap him— Only to inevitably miss due to his swift preparations, only angering Hortensia further to the point of angered speechlessness and hurried looking and scooting away. If steam were something that she could manipulate (that is to say, if she could manipulate water, which she definitely could not), it would most definitely burst out of her ears.

The duck had been well prepared. The swing of her hand passed over his head, ruffling his hair slightly with the wind of the strike, but he popped back up quickly enough, as if he had not a care in the world

"Hmm, how dare I... I dunno, pretty easily to be honest. Also you're pretty cute when you're angry. You could stand to loosen up a tad though. You're stuck with this group for at least a little bit. It'll be easier if you just relax and enjoy being with different people. I promise we're not all that bad. "

Post by: RedMageCole on January 09, 2021, 04:22:38 pm
Hortensia was still unable to say anything, only sit there angrily with a bit of a rumble and an uncomfortable blush. Suddenly, the battle looked a lot more interesting from her perspective.

(https://i.imgur.com/b9xUsoe.png) "Can't... believe... speaking... dare you call me that when I'm furious... Ugh!" Hortensia slammed her fist down on the seat, whirling around once more towards Thane. "Listen here, you- you- you crook! I may be stuck here, but that does not mean I will allow myself to stoop to the levels you're on! I am here to merely tolerate and nothing more, do you understand me!?"
Title: Re: [IC] Wheel of Time Emblem - Prologue: Westward Wind
Post by: Swordstar on January 09, 2021, 04:51:18 pm
Thane rested his elbows on the edge of the wagon, tucking his hands under his chin, watching Hortensia with a slight smirk.

"I mean, if that's what you want to do, no one here can stop you. But that sounds like you're just asking to have a bad time. I mean, if you just lightened up a little, you could enjoy yourself a lot more."

Putting one hand down on the edge of the wagon, he vaulted up and over the side and settled down onto the seat next to Hortensia. Gesturing to the battle, he continued,

"Now see, this isn't entertainment to them, not exactly. But they'll be done with it soon, and then they'll relax. Play some games, listen to some music, the like. You could join them. Or you could sit up here and be alone instead. I get noble pride and all, but it's not like anyone here will tell on you."

He paused, and then commented,

"Oh and I do know more... refined songs. If you're interested."

"... ". . . Well, your time in the north hasn't been wasted at all, has it?" Sefton stepped back carefully, putting a safe margin between himself and Camira's blade before sheathing it. "I wasn't certain of you four, but you, Naeronne. . . It's a shame you couldn't be a Warder. With a bit more training and a bond, an Aes Sedai could stride into the Blight itself without concern if she had you at her back." He turned his head to call behind himself. "Hayate, Ercole. I believe we're done here. I'm sure Eirin will be glad to hear."

"Mm. You like to push your limits, don't you?"

"If Sefton were no willing to push his limits, that Whitecloak ambush might have been the death of you."

"Ah, that was nothing. That trap was amateurish at best." The larger Warder simply "hmphed" in response, and both of them turned to fetch their mistress.

"The North demands the best if one is to survive there, and I was trained by the best my village had to offer. It... Wouldn't be right if I couldn't match a Warder" she spoke, a ping of pain and sadness crossing her gaze for a brief moment before she shook her head, watching the 'scouts' move away before refocusing on the Warder in front of her,

"Thanks. I..." Baronel hesitates for a moment, considering what had almost happened earlier. "I could have done better. But we won, so we still get paid, and that's what matters."

"I won't be coming with. Lady Eirin has her own business to attend to, and my duty is to her first." His gaze returned to Camira. "That's a strong promise. Just don't let yourself get too confident. Happening to best a Warder in a spar is a far cry from defeating an equivalent foe in a real battle - but something tells me you already know that. Keep that awareness about you; the merchant likely doesn't know what's going on, judging by how Eirin was making him sweat, but that just makes this more dangerous." Sefton nodded, before taking a step back. "Good luck on the rest of your journey. Hopefully it's much less exciting than I think it could be." With that, the Warder and his color-shifting cloak turned and walked off.

"Ah, you're finished, then?" Isidro's voice was difficult to read. "I'm afraid Lady Mendez is eager to get on the road, so if you could perhaps pick up the rest of the bodyguards and help finish packing the wagons. . . ?"

"Same to you." Baronel offers Sefton a single wave as he departs. He couldn't say he's completely unhappy to see the man (and his ward) leave, but Sefton was nice enough. The parting words are genuine, at least.

Then Isidro speaks. "Sure thing. Only fair, since we knocked them over in the first place." Baronel busies himself with helping their former opponents to their feet, not waiting for the other three to join him. Want to get back on the road as fast as possible.

Taking a moment to glance at Dola comment, Camira was quick to return her gaze to the Warder, steeling her nerves as he went on about defeating an equivalent foe in battle... A truth Camira knew far too well. In a real fight, the results of their duel might have gone far differently. The difference of their convictions made that clear enough.

"Farewell Warder Sefton. May your blade remain sharp" Cami said as the Warder left, not making any effort to raise her hand for a goodbye wave. Thankfully, Isidro was quick to enter the conversation, saving the Borderlander from her thoughts as she turned to the merchant, giving him an affirmative nod,

"Very well. Let her know that we'll be back on the road in a few minutes" she replied before turning away, following Baronel's lead and helping their fallen sparring partners up.

"Ah, very good. A clash most marvelous, would you not agree, Lady Tena? Surely we can all rest assured now, seeing what fine guardians we have on our adventure moving forward. Now come, you must relax and await while the rest of us obedient servants help to load the wagons."

He bowed with a flourish of his cape to Hortensia, before quickly darting off towards the rest of the group. An easy smile on his face for the group, he joined in on the packing up of the equipment, seemingly eager to help, a trait that one did not always expect from a gleeman.

Hortensia had been impatiently drumming her fingers on the side of her seat as the battle finally winded down— the results of which prompted a long and drawn out sigh from the noblewoman. She glared at Thane in response, almost as if to decide internally whether she should even bother with him.

"I'd be rest assured if my guardians weren't engaging in brawls while I'm waiting for what feels like ages of my precious time." Hortensia's impatient drumming did, however, fold over her other hand to sit upright with her eyes closed. Her appearance would be a thing of beauty and grace— if only she didn't open her mouth.

With everyone cooperating, it only took a few minutes to get the remainder of the wagons patched up and the bruises on the guards tended.
"Excellent. The journey to Whitebridge will hopefully not take too long. If you've never seen it before, look ahead to it; it's quite the sight." Isidro climbed back up into the wagon, taking his seat with an awkward glance at Hortensia. Unfortunately for him, her mood was liable to sour even further; after a brief exchange with her Warders, a familiar face reappeared next to her.

"It's quite unfortunate that we must part ways now, Hortensia." It was difficult to tell from her smooth expression whether she was using the Lady's first name alone to be irksome or not. "I can't help but feel we have many things to speak about. Many, many interesting things." She gave the noblewoman a devious, knowing smile. "Fortunately, my Sisters should be almost as entertaining in my stead." She moved off, heading towards the women in question.

"Alvienne, Lydia." She nodded at each in turn. "I have very urgent business elsewhere, so I cannot fulfill my duty with the lovely Lady Calderon de Mendez." Eirin squeezed an impressive amount of sarcasm into that single word. "I can't imagine you two haven't noticed as well, so please handle her in my absence. Just be aware that she will. . . resist lessons."

Meanwhile, the merchant seemed relieved to be rid of his guest for the moment, though he still glanced at Hortensia much as one might glance at a sleeping rattlesnake. This, of course, was split with his concern over the three Aes Sedai conferring; few things made a man more nervous than an Aes Sedai, let alone three and their armed guards to boot.
Title: Re: [IC] Wheel of Time Emblem - Prologue: Westward Wind

Hortensia was about this close to yelling, and it was clear by her posture that she was, indeed, about as welcoming to people as a pit full of asps. Thus, when she was addressed by first name by one of those Aes Sedai, she shot a nasty glare for a brief moment before her face went back to being soft (yet rough around the edges).

"Yes, yes, quite." Hortensia could not have said that in a more 'please get out of my sight' sounding tone. It was Eirin's second sentence, however, that made her eye slightly twitch. The mask began to chip off. "I have very little interest in speaking with or being entertained by you or your sisters. Good day." She quickly turned forward. She had been very careful about keeping her secrets hidden— was it just an obnoxious feature of Aes Sedai to hound all women to join them, regardless of social status? The thought of innocent women being hounded at every turn to join what was basically women's boot camp was utterly disgusting to Hortensia, and her expression worsened to a point where she might actually be a venomous snake.

With the packing done with, Camira made her way back into the wagon designated for those without horses, sitting down at the side with her arms and legs folded, sword resting at her side. Truthfully, the Borderlander was thankful to be placed in such a wagon, even despite it's uncomfort. It meant she wouldn't have to deal with the noble and merchant anymore than was strictly needed.

Really, it was about the smaller things in life.

Camira wasn't the only one without a horse, as she would be shortly joined by Andre. He had helped the rest of the guards and took care of his equipment and was just as ready to move on as everyone else.

(https://i.imgur.com/LSMDkTQ.png) "Good work out there! You must be very skilled indeed to finish it with a single blow!" There will be enough aches and pains in the days ahead, I am sure."

"Like I told Sefton, I was trained by one of the best the Borderlands had to offer. Any lingering pain the rest of the guard acquired during the spar should go away by dawn tomorrow" Camira replied, doing her best to ignore her own lingering pain. (https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "Perhaps we might begin with music theory, Lydia.  She seemed quite stirred by the gleeman's performance, earlier, and it is as fine a place to begin a noblewoman's tutelage as any.  Why, if she does well enough, perhaps he'd even deign to take her on as an apprentice!  With a voice as strong as hers, I'm sure they'd sing a fine duet."

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "Or a loud one, which is more than good enough."

Still beaming, Alvienne turned to their fellow sister.  The Blue sister pressed a closed hand lightly against the open palm of the other and offered a slight--if appreciative--bow.

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "We'll be sure she's appropriately seen to, Eirin.  You need not worry in that regard."

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "Why, I'm sure I'd have done it anyway.  Even within the Tower, it's rare to have the chance to speak with noblewoman of such precise levels of eloquence, control, and social grace."

Alvienne clasped her hands behind her back, closing her eyes and humming a soft tune.

Eirin snorted at Lydia's response. She had been about to clarify when Alvienne rescued her from doing so, prompting a grateful nod instead.

"Well, I wouldn't get too confident. I've seen those three fighting at full strength, and that wasn't it. Still, they were much more competent than I would have expected out of such a motley bunch. Hopefully they're enough to keep the rifraff away."

She glanced back at Hortensia for a long moment, making it clear that she was talking about the noblewoman - but still keeping her voice down when she spoke.

"And please, don't let this girl do something stupid. She could be incredibly valuable to the Tower, and she already seems to have some raw strength - it would be a crime to let her lay facedown in a ditch with a Whitecloak's - or a dissatisfied guard's - knife in her back."

"She's right."

Baronel stood outside the wagon, having caught Andre's words and Camira's reply (he talks loud, that one).

"We did well enough and it all worked out," he says in a placating tone, climbing in himself, "and as long as our employers are satisfied, "could have" doesn't matter. It can be hard to put in everything you have when it's not life or death." He idly tugs at the leather on his forearms.

"...But all the same, you were impressive right at the end," he says, nodding to the Borderlander. "Never seen anyone move like that in my entire life. You said you were trained by the best your homeland had to offer, yeah?"

He took me as his pupil when I was young and passed down his knowledge with a sword to me" Cami answered, returning Baronel's nod with her own. "Some knowledge he must have had, then. You were taught damn well." Baronel searches around for something else to say, unwilling to let things end there.

"...Me, I... I learned to fight on the streets," he begins, a little awkwardly. "Beating up other kids, getting beat up back. I was pretty good at it. Kept getting better when I grew up." He chuckles at some distant memory. "The most teaching I had was learning where to punch to make someone fall over and not get back up - after I'd get punched plenty in those places myself."

He cracks his knuckles. No idea what to do with his hands. Can't let them sit there. "I'm not quite used to punching people tryin' to hit me with swords yet. But I'll get better at that too, I think."

"Alright, my ladies, I believe we are fully prepared. I bid you safe travels, Lady Eirin Sedai." Isidro gave as polite of a bow as he could manage from his seat after calling out to the trio of channelers. "And I hope I can stay out of the webs of the other two."

Eirin gave the merchant a farewell wave, raising her hand high above her head as her Warders gathered about. They turned toward the north, following another well-traveled road, while the merchant's caravan lurched into motion. Whitebridge was their next destination, and Isidro planned to push there as quickly as possible. There were rumors of banditry along the roads, and the Children of the Light seemed to be stirring, making a party such as theirs much less secure than usual. Still, the journey wasn't too far, and Andor was a safe country. All the while, the wind continued to lazily chase them, pushing them further forward. . .

~Some time later~
"Hayate, have you been so clumsy lately? It do be the first time I have seen someone manage to get a hole burnt in a color-shifting cloak."

The borderlander glanced back in confusion. "What are you talking about, Ercole? I think I would have noticed if someone had set me on fire recently. This isn't one of your pranks, is it?" The man tugged at the garment in question, trying to search for the hole.

"No, I can see the damage." Sefton gestured at a spot near Hayate's arm, where a telltale scorch mark marred the otherwise ever-shifting surface. He'd fallen back as he heard the discussion. "We haven't done anything recently that would have exposed it to fire." His brow furrowed.

Eirin, traveling at the center of the group, had raised her eyebrows as the topic of conversation.
"A mysterious fire, you say?" Her voice was airy, more speaking to herself than the warders as they continued to discuss the possibilities. "Interesting. Very interesting indeed. . ."

Chapter 1: A Glimpse of Thunder
~Two weeks later~
(https://i.imgur.com/yHZa5Jw.png)
"I've been told this is a good place to camp. Let's rest here for the night, lest we kill my poor horses." Even in the dim lighting of the setting sun, it was easy to see that the beasts were exhausted. Isidro, despite his calm demeanor, had apparently heard the rumors about the dangers on the road, and had been pressing on at a breakneck pace. If they could maintain it, they could reach Whitebridge in a week, assuming nothing happened to slow them down. "Apologies, Lady Calderon de Mendez, but there are few major towns to stop at between Four Kings and Whitebridge."

Baronel, Dola, Andre, and Camira were largely left to their own devices. It was too early to put up sentries around the camp, and they weren't expected to do much of the heavy lifting when it came to embarking and disembarking most of the time. Still, the rest of the merchant's hirelings appreciated the effort - and similarly tended to not appreciate people lazing about. Thane, meanwhile, was expecting a gaggle of people already half-drunk to show up and beg him for songs; it had been a recurring event for the past few days. The only thing that seemed to slow them down was the frequent presence of Lydia and Alvienne, who both tended to deter men from being too boisterous - or noticeable in general - when they were around.

Within their designated wagon, Cami found herself... Rather bored, to be honest. The occasional chat with her fellow mercenaries was a fine enough distraction, but the trip itself, even with the merchant moving them along as much as possible, was nothing but trees and plains. Not that she could complain, the calmness was nice. Regardless, with the caravan finally stopped once again, Camira pushed herself up from her spot, grabbing her own equipment, mainly her sword and camping tools, before hopping out of the wagon. She wasn't one to go out of her way to assist the rest of the hirelings with unpacking and camp making, but at the same time, she also refused to allow anyone but herself to set up her resting spot. She could handle herself after all, and her job was to protect Isidro and Hortensia, not babysit them.

Either way, marking her spot in the shade of a tree near, but not at, the edge of their camp, Camira decided to start an early patrol of the grounds. It was too early for sentry duty, yes, but a quick search of the area was still something that needed to be done.

Hortensia had been completely unprepared for this journey to be this long and this inconvenient. She had expected to at least stop in a (relatively, for her tastes) nice inn every stop along the way, and actually have some pleasant company. However, she was very much beginning to reach her breaking point. She had grown exceptionally sick of avoiding the Aes Sedai— knowing that communication with them would either cause her to snap and lose her temper, or worse. The rest of the rabble was tolerable, if not still sickening— with the exception of Thane, who was completely and utterly obnoxious. At least the rest of the commoners accompanying them knew their place and didn't constantly try to bother her.

All in all, Hortensia was not a happy noblewoman.

"Very well." It was clear Hortensia was trying not to talk too much— even those two words contained a spray of venom in them. "I will await the setting of my... tent." She very nearly called her tent something nasty— possibly something like 'pigsty' or 'hole' or 'dirty set of rags that a noblewoman shouldn't be caught dead sleeping inside of'. Yet despite her temper reaching her limits, she still held it together. Her expression did, however, dare anyone to speak to her. She sat in the wagon, patiently waiting either to go straight to her tent or excuse herself in the case of anyone looking like they wanted to speak without being spoken to.

As Camira made her rounds, it would swiftly become apparent that she was being followed.  As she begins her not-quite-patrol, Lydia follows the warrior close behind, staring expressionlessly at her, largely unreadable.  Not taking any notes, not really doing anything other than walking and staring, just keeping pace.

Lydia, for her part, is intensely wracking her brain for plans and coming up dry.  How exactly does one start a conversation?  Aside from swordplay, she doesn't know any of Camira's preferred fields of study, so attempting to establish common ground that way is out.  How do people start conversations without academic common ground?  Is it even possible?

Unable to come to a conclusion, oblivious to the awkward, off-putting impression she's giving, Lydia continues to follow Camira, staring, seemingly without blinking, into the back of the warrior's head.

As on edge as she always was, Camira was quick to note the individual following her. Specifically one of the Aes Sedai, Lydia if her memory recalled correctly. At first, Camira didn't pay her much mind, simply continuing with her rounds, but as it became more and more apparent that Lydia was following her and not just heading in the same general direction, the Borderlander suddenly stopped, turning her body halfway in order to face the Aes Sedai,

(https://i.imgur.com/a8J9Qp3.png) "Nothing in particular.  I wanted to talk," Lydia said tonelessly, "We will be spending a great deal of time together in the coming journey.  I would like to better understand the individuals I will be entrusting my safety and research to, and I would prefer our interactions and parting be of the pleasant sort."  Lydia tilted her head to the side, the corners of her mouth turning down in a slightly contemplative frown, "What is your primary field of study?  I have not been able to ascertain it through observation.  Swordplay seems likely, but I would not wish to offend by making unfounded assumptions."

Express greetings, locate and identify common ground, express interest in the other's projects, studies, or profession.  That was what that Grey Sister said was the best way to begin a friendly conversation, right?  No, there was something else...

Smile!

...How did that work again?

It can't be too hard.  Lydia has seen people do it all the time.  How did it go...  Lift the corners of your mouth, raise the eyes, bare teeth?

Lydia's best attempt at a 'smile' gives off the distinct impression that she's about three seconds from pulling out a very long and bloodstained knife, or possibly biting someone in the neck, far more so than anything even remotely positive.  But since the Grey Sister she'd convinced to help her learn to converse with others suddenly remembered an urgent appointment and had to leave right away after seeing Lydia's first attempt, and surely the other Aes Sedai wouldn't have done that unless Lydia had gotten it right on the first try.

For what it was worth, Camira considered herself a hard to unnerve individual. Even with all her faults, she had never ran due to her fear, or opened her guard because of surprise. But the instant Lydia ‘smiled’ at her, it took all the Borderlander had to stand her ground, a feat only matched once in her life.

She rarely interacted with Aes Sedai, being nothing more than a mercenary herself, but surely they couldn’t be this odd, could they?

"Surely a dignified noblewoman has enough, well, dignity to put up with a tent for a while. Unless you aren't one."

Dola, for her part, was used to this sort of thing. Desensitised even. A calm amble about the forest was all well and good, but some part of her craved the thrills of her past life. After all, chasing lost artifacts and recovering them was a far cry from what she was setting out to do.

Those thin lines that had been trying to hold Hortensia's patience together had been wearing thin for quite some time. And one of them just finally gave in and snapped— it was evident with the nasty look on Hortensia's face. At the very least, it looked like her body language had finally begun to relax.

"You dare speak to me as if you know what it means to be nobility? Perhaps your kind might be used to sleeping in the mud, but a dignified noblewoman has enough pride in herself to be rightfully disgusted with sleeping in such conditions. You should be grateful that I am allowing my patience to be tested just for all of you— if it were not for Sir Isidro's generosity, I would have you and these horses walk until we reached the end.." Of course, she might be commanding a lot more presence and anger if she wasn't mostly sputtering and speaking through gritted teeth. Eventually, realizing how much she had lost her temper, Hortensia quickly went to looking away with her nose turned up— attempting to tie the string that snapped. "You would do well to leave me be. What is it you commoners say? 'None of your business?' Keep it that way."

Two weeks on the road, one more to Whitebridge, and a good deal more than that until Baerlon. This was shaping up to be the longest Baronel had ever spent with a single group, and of course it would be one with three Aes Sedai in it, too. Just trying to move around camp without having to speak to them was doing a number on his nerves. He could almost sense their eyes on him wherever he went. No, that's not possible. Pull yourself together.

His tent is set up and he's helped the others unpack here and there when he hears a voice not too far away - Hortensia, likely eviscerating some poor sap with her viper's tongue. Baronel would rather march straight up to the White Tower himself than listen to that woman seethe if he could help it, so he turns on his heel and marches straight in the opposite direction. Near the edge of the camp he passes a few tree - and freezes as he sees Lydia (and Camira) on the other side. Too late to hide; there's no way she couldn't see him. Stupid. Careless. He takes a few steps forward to make himself known and raises his hand in greeting.

"Ladies. Not interrupting anything, am I?"

Hortensia looks extremely offended at all of what Dola said— even marking her offense at the last part of Dola's sentence with a gasp.

"Do you have no sense of shame!? I have done nothing but show my politeness towards you and the rabble— but if you desire honesty, then very well! You, just like any other commoner, do not deserve my respect. Once again, you should grateful that despite your inferiority, I have been patient to no end! You'd best begone before I lose it even further."

Then she starts laughing.

Lydia blinked, slowly, before turning so that she was partially facing both Camira and Baronel, apparently seeing zero reason to make eye contact with either of them.  (https://i.imgur.com/a8J9Qp3.png) "You are not.  I had engaged Camira in discourse in order to gain understanding of those I will be entrusting my well-being to in this journey.  As such, speaking with another of the warriors would not be counterproductive.  Feel free to join us."  Lydia paused again, just long enough to for someone else to maybe think she's done, before speaking more.  "Hello, Baronel." She states belatedly.

"You all sound the exact same— 'lighten up' this, laughing at completely inappropriate times because everything in life is just a big joke to you... It was unclear whether or not it was a blessing or a curse that Cami could wrap her head around what Lydia was saying, but she could, which allowed her to shake her head at Lydia's question about 'breakthroughs in her studies',

"Eh, it's close enough to work. As of late though, no such luck, this quiet journey hasn't given me much to test my skills, aside from the spar with the Warders two weeks ago" Cami replied, a brief, barely visible smile on her lips as she recalled the spar. She had messed up, but it was still enjoyable, she hadn't felt as alive in quite some time, weaving through the Warder's defense. Of course, her memories had to be cut off as another figure approached, the Borderlander's smile quickly fading right before her head turned to greet Baronel,

"As she said, you aren't interrupting anything important. I was simply making a patrol of the grounds before the sentries were put up."

Isidro, watching the events unfold between Hortensia and, well, everyone, had the distinct look of a man reconsidering every decision in his life that led to the current state of affairs. When he realized he was standing and staring, he shook his head and grumbled something impolite-sounding under his breath before climbing into one of his wagons. A lamp lit inside it shortly thereafter; presumably the man had found something to occupy his time.

The merchant's timing proved to be fortunate. Almost as soon as the telltale light broke free from the confines of the wagon, a peal of thunder ripped forth overhead. The sound was loud enough to startle the horses, an issue that a gaggle of equally-alarmed merchant hirelings scurried to address. "What in the seven hells was that?" an older man grumbled, one recognizable as a wagonwright Isidro kept on to ensure everything was kept in top shape. "It was damn near clear an hour ago." Yet, storm clouds seemed to be rolling in, and with them, rain began to fall.

Hortensia was just this close to her breaking point— having to sleep in a tent, making herself look like a fool just because some commoners didn't know how to keep to themselves, knowing that they weren't even close to their destination... It was all starting to cave in, it was all making her want to throw something. At someone.

Yet all of that rage turned into sheer shock and panic the second she heard the sound of thunder. Hortensia turned up her nose and acted as if she didn't just jump out of her skin— probably just some stupid commoner blowing something up with something or other, not important, not important... but when she saw storm clouds come in and rain start to fall, horror struck her across the face.

Almost immediately, Hortensia curled up closer inside of the wagon— if she stepped one foot out there in her emotionally volatile state, if she even thought about it, her life would be over. Gone. She did her best to occupy herself with literally anything else— Hortensia suddenly found her necklace extremely interesting and fiddled with that while being firmly rooted to her seat in the wagon, trying to feign complete ignorance to the sounds of water accumulating on the top of the wagon.

Naturally, something would've interrupted the pleasant talk Cami had found herself in. Unnaturally, that interruption came in the form of thunder, causing the Borderlander to glance up and see the dark clouds rolling in,

"A storm already?" she wondered aloud, ignoring the first sprinkles of rain that began to fall upon the camp. Instinctively, Camira narrowed her eyes... Not to protect them from the rain, but out of suspicion. Storms didn't tend to roll in that quickly,

"Hey, Sedai" Cami called out, turning back to Lydia, "I don't know a lot about the... What do you folk call it... Magic? Or was it the Power? Whatever it's called, your bound to be more familiar with it. Is it possible for someone like you to whip up a storm like this?"

Thanes let out a grumble as the rain struck. He had just been about to start practicing, his instrument laid out neatly, juggling balls in hand, and now he had to rush. He quickly threw waterproof leather over the instruments before carefully scooping them and their cases up and darting under the covered wagon. Settling down, not even looking to see who else was in there with him, he carefully began cleaning the instruments, mutter to himself.

Of course there was neither the time, manpower or enthusiasm to dig some ditches around the camp for protection, but Andre still took the time to check the terrain around the camp and try to eliminate any hiding spots that could be used to sneak up upon them. At the same time he was also collecting wood for the fires and so was naturally caught off guard by the sudden storm as well.

Thanes would have the clanking of armour as a warning before Andre joined him underneath the covered wagon.

(https://i.imgur.com/LSMDkTQ.png) "Blasted Rain! Clear one moment and stormy the next." Even in the dim light the patchwork cloak was unmistakable and so Andre asked, "You must have travelled all over, Gleeman. Have you ever seen weather like this before? Nothing good will come of it, I suspect."

"You sure about working for this Galileo guy? He seems. . . off."
"Well, I'm not aboutta argue with him. If this weather is actually what you think it is. . ."
"Oi, don't say that out loud. You'll bring the Dark One's eye on you at this rate, you will."
"Maybe I will."
"The hell's that mean?"
"Nothing. They're settling down in the designated spot, you go back and send the signal."
The woods nearby rustled faintly beneath the rolling sounds of thunder as one of the men drew away. The other crept closer to a small ridge nearby, a nearly invisible black shape in the sudden dimness of the storm. "Bloody idiot is finally gone. Maybe he'll get himself killed here and then the only prying eyes I'll have to deal with will be hers. . ."

Meanwhile, in the camp. . .

"Well, Shin not returning isn't that unusual. The man is distractible at the best of times, I don't think a bit of rain is a reason to panic over him." Despite his words, Isidro failed to keep the concern out of his voice. The merchant eyed the terrain nearby, nervous eyes attempting to pierce the rain and spot anything of concern in the sparse trees.
"Isidro, he's been gone for hours. Malkieri don't tend to just vanish like that, no matter how 'distractible' they are. We might have a problem on our hands." Though he wasn't formally a captain, Isidro's most experienced guard was one in all but name. A gruff man bearing a fair share of scars and stories, he'd mostly remained reserved toward the newcomers in the caravan to this point.
"Do you think we'll be able to convince the sisters to help?"
The captain snorted. "Maybe if you brew them the finest tea, and lick their feet while you're at it. We need to get ready for trouble. I'll fetch the greenhorns."

"I don't know! You're the guard, you get me out safe!" The panicked merchant promptly fled inside his wagon.
"Damned penny pinchers. . ."

"Alright, boys, surround 'em! A caravan of this size has gotta have all kinds of loot for us! Just corral 'em and I'll crush them." As if to punctuate the leader's shouting, thunder boomed overhead.

Hortensia let out a loud 'eep' and ducked for cover at the sudden booming of thunder— she hadn't noticed that there was a fight going on at all. She had a whip at her side for self-defense, but her working up the backbone to get out of the wagon and fight (especially in the rain) was going to be... difficult for the haughty noblewoman. The swordsmen watch the mercenaries and the women backing them with a mixture of apprasial and nervousness, clearly unnerved by the potential threat the Aes Sedai posed.

Enemy Phase begins!

"Don't just stand there! Gut them!" The man's voice rang out unnaturally loud, and it was punctuated with another boom of thunder, as if on cue. This prompt was enough to push the bandits out of their reluctance, the first group targeting Camira due to her defensive (and theoretically less threatening) posture.

Swordsman A moves to C6 and attacks Camira!

Swordsman A attacks!
Hit: 88 - 22 - 20 = 46
Roll: 89, miss!

Roll: 6, hit!
Damage: 14 - 5 = 9 / 2 = 4

Camira attacks again!
Hit: 82
Roll: 12, hit!
Damage: 4

This proves to be a mistake, the swordsman taking two swift cuts for his trouble.

The archers opt to assist, not wanting to place themselves in too easy reach for the rest of the group.

Archer A moves to B7 and attacks Camira!
Quote from: Archer A vs Camira
Archer A attacks!

Camira cannot counter!

They have more success than their bladed comrade, each shot scoring a deep line in Camira's side.

Some of the mounted bandits move up, menacing Hortensia but not quite in range to strike the noblewoman. They eye her fine noble clothing, clearly thinking she's an easy target.

Alvienne to E-2 and Slow (with Conjurer Hit and Damage) Outrider C once Hortensia moves.

Apparently having satisfied herself with her observations of the bandits--and her observation of the storm above--Alvienne shared a quick glance with Lydia.  After a moment, the Blue sister gave the White a nod.

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "I'd best see to the girl, then, Sister.   Unfortunate as the circumstances are, this seems as fine an opportunity as any.  And I'm sure the others could benefit more from your skill than whatever advice I could offer, cheering for them as that might be."

She gave a casual shrug, heading back to the caravan.  As she went, her eyes drifted to the path along the cliffs and the horsemen racing along it, a careful weave of the power slipping from her and disrupting the ground before them, almost invisibly to the eyes in the shadow of the storm--but more than enough to risk injury to an incautious horse, should it continue heedless onwards.  Satisfied with her work, she hopped into the wagon alongside a no-doubt startled Hortensia, giving her a cheerful smile.

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "Ah, there you are!  Waiting out the storm and battle in the comfort of the wagon?  Delightful- I think I'll join you, in that case.  Since I can't imagine you feel up for involving yourself in that mess--particularly not when the common guards can protect you better than you can yourself!--and I certainly don't either, perhaps we could chat and bond a little, hm?  I was hoping to get your take on a few rather scandalous pieces of gossip about the old Calderon family~"

Hortensia immediately snapped out of her trance; letting go of her necklace and brandishing her whip. She was about a second from lashing it at Alvienne before Hortensia realized who it was— instead, she let out a loud groan and looked away.

"Stop talking to me, stop talking-" Hortensia's initial words were more for herself than an order to the sister, but it didn't really work out for as a distraction considering the rain was still on her mind. She impatiently tapped her fingers and continued to look away, making it as apparent as possible that she was not interested. She even did her best to not say a word— up until Alvienne managed to poke that sore spot. At the very least, it made Hortensia forget about the rain for a moment if only that were true, as she were still thinking about water in another way. "Whatever you heard, it's not true! You miscreants are all the same— not aware of your place in this world and thinking you can spread despicable rumors about your superiors! I would rather be outside getting your job done better than listen to your drivel for another second!" With a loud splash, as the water that had pooled up on top of the wagon oh-so-conveniently got thrown out to the side and drenched the trees, Hortensia got out of the wagon; blissfully unaware of the noise that just occurred.

The second the rain hit her body and the mud splashed the bottom rim of her dress, Hortensia was immediately filled with regret. Even holding tightly to her whip couldn't stop her from shivering with fright. At the very least, her fear of losing control was significantly higher than her fear of getting attacked.

If Hortensia had hoped this would wipe the smile from Alvienne's face, she was sorely mistaken.  If anything, it seemed to grow even wider as the Aes Sedai peered out from the relative comfort of the wagon.

(https://i.imgur.com/kmbqqqw.png) "As you like!  If you wish to demonstrate your superiority to me, then by all means--I've no intent of stopping you.  Though I will admit some curiosity as to how you intend to do my job wallowing with a whip in the mud."

As far as arrows went, however, she didn't have as much practice, leading to two scoring glancing blows on her side. Nonfatal, but not at all pleasant either. Regardless, giving a silent nod to Lydia, Camira broke into a sprint, weaving around the bandit's side in order to strike at one of the archers.

Cami moves to A7 and attempts to double Archer A

Lydia moves up to Heal Camira. The swordswoman feels the icy chill of the One Power moving through her body, knitting her wounds back together; accompanying this is a faint but unmistakably present surge of hunger.

The two female fighters of the group move up to exploit the break in the enemy lines.

Hortensia gasped in horror at the sight of the horsemen attacking her caravan. Had they no shame!? This, combined with her frustration with the rain, made her lash her whip at the muddied ground. The wet mud rose perhaps a bit unnaturally high into the air— something Hortensia did not take notice of.

Hortensia had effortlessly dodged the first arrow like it was nothing— scoffing at its presence. However, the second arrow embedded itself into Hortensia's shoulder. She let out a gasp as she realized what happened. She looked at the wound... blood.

(https://i.imgur.com/b9xUsoe.png) "S... Savages! Savages, all of you, savages! You deserve no quarter for harming a lady!" Despite her angered threats, it sounded more like she was horrified than anything else. "You're all the dirtiest, filthiest, most low-life scum! I've met street rats more polite than you! Disgraceful! Disgusting!" Hortensia continued to rant all the way into the hills, ducking for cover. She resumed the same position as she was in the wagon— curled up in fetal position as the rain steadily pooled around her in a near-perfect circle of protection. She angrily banged her fist against the side of the hill that she hid behind, away from everyone's sight...

...It just so happened that all of the rainwater on the side of the hill came down in a small landslide, threatening to wash away the horseman that threatened the caravan.

Weaving past the rider's lance, Cami landed two glancing blows before hoping back, gritting her teeth as she took stock of the situation. Lances were always a problem with her, and forced her to play things far more carefully. The fact that this bandit's armor was actually well made was not helping matters.

Still, she couldn't complain about a stalemate. She just needed them out of the way so she could find their leader. Should they die, it was only natural that the bandits would rout in short order.

Automove:

- Alv to E5 and Slow Archer C
- Lydia to C7 and uses a regular first aid on Baronel.
- Cami moves to D7 and uses Leaf on the Wind.
- Thane to C5, use Artemis Song to refresh both Lydia and Alv
- Alv to F4 and Slow Bandit A.
- Andre to G4 and axe Bandit A.
- If it makes sense for Lydia to do so now, have her Photon Outrider A. If not, then simply use another first aid on Baronel.
- Finally, Caravan B moves to E2

He nearly succeeds in tearing the bandit off his horse, but that doesn't stop his foe from landing a gash in his side.

Enemy Phase begins!

The bandit archer, apparently more willing to risk the wrath of Hortensia and Andre than his leader, leaps over the fallen Aes Sedai and fires a last flaming arrow into the caravan. The fire quickly overtakes the wagon, and soon it's falling to pieces.

Caravan A is destroyed!

The horseman surrounded by enemies in all directions but the trees behind has a tad more self-preservation, and leaps off his horse, leaving his weapons behind. He skitters off into the woods, only for a crack to sound on top of a flash. When the party's vision recovers, the ground around him is scorched, his body unrecognizable.

Outrider A is defeated. . . ?

//A lot of first aids happen. Lydia first aids Baronel because she was trying to jump over an impassible cliff and I don't feel like delaying any further.

Hortensia moves in to apply a bit more Tairen discipline.

Still rather stunned, and more than a bit miffed, the Aes Sedai shook some of the mud from her dress and started moving on her own again with the aid of a minor weave.

Alvienne, G3, First Aid Self.
