Doomsday Dawn, Chapter One

Keleri Deverin, an aristocrat and scholar living in Magnimar, has a problem. Just
a week ago, she received an invitation from her cousin Kendra, mayor of the
nearby town of Sandpoint, to attend that town’s upcoming Swallowtail Festival.
With the festival’s focus on the consecration of Sandpoint’s new cathedral, Keleri
hoped to bring a family heirloom, the Star of Desna, to receive a blessing, but as
she prepared for her trip, an unexpected complication arose.

When Keleri entered the old vault beneath the family estate to retrieve the
star from storage, she found the chamber in total disarray. Chests lay smashed
about the room, shelves were knocked over, and worst of all, the steel lockbox
containing the Star of Desna was missing. The source of the robbery was made
evident by a gaping hole in the center of the floor, leading down into the sewers,
and sewage stains in the shape of goblin footprints leading out of it.

Enraged, Keleri lashed out at the now-empty shelves and ruined containers,
only to find that she was not alone. A quiet whimpering came from behind a
partially collapsed armoire. Investigating, she found a lone goblin, wounded
and wretched. Keleri demanded answers about her stolen heirlooms, but the
goblin only began howling in greater terror and begged for mercy. Keleri’s rage
subsided, and she asked the goblin what had frightened her so.

The goblin introduced herself as Talga and explained that her tribe, the
Mudchewer tribe, had been enslaved by a brutish hobgoblin named Drakus the
Taker, who was forcing members of her tribe to dig into vaults and basements all
around town to rob longshanks of loot and treasure. Those who refused were
taken away, only to have their blood-drained bodies put on display as a warning
to the other goblins. Immediately after the robbery on the Deverin basement,
Talga and a few other desperate goblins rebelled, but they were cut down and
slaughtered. Only Talga survived by retreating up to the Deverin vault and hiding.
Now with no home and nearly paralyzed with fear over the fate of her fellow
goblins under Drakus’s increasingly violent rule, Talga became desperate. She
begged Keleri to send adventurers to her old lair, a complex called the Ashen
Ossuary that was accessible via the Magnimar sewers. She promised to sketch a
map of the lair and to lead Keleri and anyone who might help to the entrance,
and vowed that in return she would work to spread the word among other goblin
tribes in the sewers that longshanks are friendly.

While Keleri was sympathetic to the tale, she is a scholar, not an adventurer.
However, she does have contacts, and knows of at least a few eager new nominees
for the task. Ever the forward thinker, she hopes that by calling upon allies,
she can not only recover her stolen heirloom, but perhaps even start a new
diplomatic alliance between Magnimar and one of its most notorious antagonists.

Play With Your Buddies / Filthy Casual Streaming!
« on: March 07, 2017, 01:24:48 pm »
Hey guys, I've decided to take a dive head-first into streaming games. Of course, I've decided the best idea would be to stream Animal Crossing for the gamecube, because that could never go wrong. I plan to do this at around 3 PM PST, right here.

So, I figured I'd ask you guys first: What should the name of my town be? The darn thing is limited to 8 characters, but otherwise have at it.

Creative Projects / The creation of yet another roguelike?
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:07:57 pm »
I'm simply putting this here because it's in the process of creation - heck, I don't even have my little '@' running around the screen yet.

So! I'm wanting to build a shipwreck-survival RL in the vein of lost in blue. Which is fine and dandy, but I'm having a problem deciding on a few things.
Namely:
  • How large should the island be? What sort of environments should there be?
  • I'm thinking of 100x100 maptiles, each of which are 32x32 player tiles.
  • There's going to be beaches, tropical forests, plains, swamp, and river/lake tiles. Should I have more/less?
[li]What are the main obstacles to the player?[/li]
  • Food, water, and shelter are all very important. I'm going to try to model exposure and inclement weather conditions.
  • I'm going to want apex predators. Wolves, tigers, and such. Maybe Lost-esque polar bears? What other enemies should there be?
[li]Is there an end goal? What is it?[/li]
  • One should be to get off the island (obviously). But should there be more?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / For the Good of the Village 3.5 - IC
« on: September 28, 2014, 06:57:48 pm »

For the Good of the Village

The meeting hall is quiet, the only sound breaking the silence is the first of many flies of the spring season buzzing about. Gathered here are the village elders, the most respected five members of the village, elected by elders of generations past.

They are looking at you.

"Layla. Chaiket. Drenza. Arsolf. You know why you are here, yes?"

The balding man with white beard does not pause. His name floats to the front of your mind; He is Jarad, and often spends his time in Meditation. You know this is a serious problem, as he does not call these meetings lightly, outside of the schedule.

"For the past month, a group of thieves have been stealing our food in the cover of night. It is clear they do not want conflict, but this cannot go on any longer.
"You must stop them. We know they come when the guards are not posted at the stores all night. They do not risk contact with armed villagers. They come and go without a trace, save their footprints which mark them Kobold. We know not where they are holed up - we cannot spare guards this time of year. Please, track them down and find them and stop this crime."

The man steps back, and another steps forward. You recognize him as the captain of the guard, chainmail on and helm in hand; It is tradition that nothing shall obscure the face of any whom enter this hall.

"We know when they come and which direction they head, and not much else. Please let me know what you would like done to help us aid you from here in the village. We cannot offer anything more at this time."

He speaks quickly, keeping short with you. He was never a talkative man. He stands before you, awaiting an answer.

For the Good of the Village
D&D 3.5

Your village has been the victim of a rash of food theft recently. Tracks indicate the thievery has been done by kobolds. With the village guard too busy protecting the village from other threats, you have been recruited by the village elders to stop the theft of the sustenance necessary to survival in this harsh jungle landscape.

Creative Projects / Making an ARG
« on: October 05, 2013, 04:52:28 pm »
I had a friend last year who was tagging lambda symbols on walls around my campus - ala HL2.

An idea came to me last night while thinking about hunting down all of those spots - making an Alternate Reality Game in my campus.

So far the idea's come down to taking the little plastic film canisters and putting notes in them, with a distress note and a time and place inside them. Setting up the place with another canister and a note that says "wait".  Step aside for a while and wait for other people to show up, then lead them on some sort of an adventure. I'm thinking I need to get a cheap, disposable phone I can use to text the people after gathering their numbers (And mine) and hiding them in a film canister. The canisters would be the main mode of communication, using the texting service to direct them to the next plot point.

The basis so far is that something is happening that isn't exactly human. Sort of a Marble Hornets thing. There's an old arboretum on my campus that would be perfect to hide things in and the place is over 100 years old so I'm sure I can find some cool drop points in bathrooms and and crevices outside. The person reaching out I'm planning on naming Gregory Masters. For various reasons  ;D

At one point I'm considering putting a USB drive into one (A free college handout one) with some pictures of important locations and a dark, grainy video telling them more of what's happening.

So, I wanted to run this by this community. And if there's anyone going to college in the great state of Idaho, PM me with your college if you wanna help me GM the thing, and I'll let you know if we go to the same school.

Hello everyone one, introduction stuff, etc.

I'm scrapping together ideas for a roguelike that's been itching to get out of my head. I've been playing Lost in Blue 2 for a little while, and the idea of a straight-up survival game has been clawing at my mind for the past few weeks.

So! I've taken it upon myself, with no real prior experience, to learn Python and libtcod and create the game!

I've got the .py file called IslandCrash, as a working title for the thing, and I aim to hit the depth of gameplay that Dwarf Fortress and Cataclysm DDA both have.

Play With Your Buddies / Henry Morgan: a Cataclysm DDA Let's Play
« on: May 17, 2013, 12:06:09 am »
My name is Henry Morgan. It's been a little while since the world ended; a year, about. The snow's all just melted. Everyone I know is dead. I've buried everyone from the shelter.

I need to get out of here. That town is much too close for comfort. But which way to go?

There wasn't anything in the basement I could use, sadly. We used it all up surviving in here. I managed to snatch a rock from outside, and I smashed one of those metal cabinets to make a crowbar.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'm going to raid those houses to the south; I'm going to need more materials than just what I have now to get out of here properly. But which way should I go? It looks like there's some more houses the the southeast, and to the northwest. I can't see far enough to the northeast to make any claim what lies there, and the town center is to the southwest. That is off-limits.

Hey everyone, I'm trying my hand at a Cataclysm: DDA LP. This is going to end up crazy no matter what happens. I'll be asking for your advice every few updates; the grand scheme of this is up to you guys, I'll just be playing survivor-mode.

Life Advice / Oh god college problems.
« on: May 14, 2013, 04:33:43 pm »
So, I'm in my freshman year. Just finished it, and was a little proud. My GPA was eh. a 2.0 after the first semester. I checked my grades today, and I found out I have a 3.6 for all the classes posted. I check my online math course grades and I find out I failed it. It's a 4 credit course, and it drags me down to a 2.0. I've got a 3 and 2 credit class, in which I'm hoping for C's but could go either way.

I'm kind of freaking out over this failed grade. It's not required for my degree, but it hurts my overall GPA for sure.

Is it really as bad as I think it is? Should I be panicking this much? Also, if I retake the course would it change that grade?

I just needed to get this off my chest somewhere. Thanks in advance for just reading this, and thanks if you post.

DF Community Games & Stories / WayPaths - new community fort!
« on: March 28, 2013, 09:02:32 pm »
OP stuff: Right now I feel like making a community fort out of this idea. I plan on sorting all stones, minerals, and metal bars by color and sending them to workshops for the colors, using minecarts. This map has four layers of Chalk, so I'm digging past them and building in the layers below until I carve out the layers completely. Also creating family housing is part of my plan, so this should be fun! I gotta redesign every time a family has a new kid. No more than 2 kids a room, and every noble's kid gets a room for itself.

My dwarf-eyes are that of "Puff" Sigun Febgusil "Arrowcopper", a naive Dwarf who likes architecture and working with stone. This will hopefully be an asthetically pleasing fort as well :)

Hello, diary, it's me, Puff. I know I'm actually called Sigun, but I like Puff, it sounds cute. Today I've managed to get myself onto an expedition to create a new outpost! They've given us the name WayPaths. I like it. Here's a little bit about me:

Here's what we've decided - or rather, Adil decided for us. I don't think I'll like her if she tells me what to do. She calls herself the leader and all, but I don't think she understands art.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do -you- utilize magma?
« on: January 07, 2013, 04:54:33 pm »
I'm curious as to how you all do it, I've only ever dabbled in magma-ing, or pumpstacks for that matter. How do you guys transport sand or minerals down, and how do you usually get the finished product back up? I'm sure minecarts are a wonderful boon for this, and I'm also sure that many of you have other ingenious ideas.
