Title: Wanderlust: Arrival! Welcome to the Wanderlust!
Post by: FallacyofUrist on June 11, 2018, 05:03:25 pm
Life is boring. That's your thought as life goes on. Wake. Eat. Work. Eat. Work. Return. Sleep. Repeat. Everyone's saying that this is the way to live life. There are those who rebel against this pattern, though.

That's not you, though. You never had the nerve. Or the opportunity.

Until now.

When you wake up one morning, there's a flyer attached to your face.

"Bored with life? Tired of the stress? Tarry no more! You've been invited on the trip of a lifetime courtesy of rich philanthropist Benjamin Robert Octavian Beth! You and six others will travel aboard an experimental ship for one year! You'll see the worlds' wonders! Learn from the best in every field! Destress under the care of our staff! Have fun! When you return, we'll help you get your dream job using your new education! Just fill out the form below!"

The flyer then lists an address.

The choice is obvious.

The cephalopod gazes at the form for a moment, intrigued.
Once it reaches the bottom, it blinks in confusion. How can one forfeit one's human from, when one is not human?

Oh well, worth a try anyway. Hey, it might work.

inb4 inter-party rivalry between our characters, again.
Probably because we seem to make the same outline of a character each time.

Whaaaaaaaaat? Noooooooooo.... Noooooooooo...... Noooooooooooooo....
I have absolutely no idea what you're on about. My characters are always original! I'm not... Running out of creativity....

All that aside, I intend to play Tali a little more amiably than my characters tend to be. So let's hope for less inter-party conflict.

A philosopher, a seductress, a cuttlefish, a professor, a retired investigator, and Jacob walk into a mostly empty bar.

"Welcome, one and all. While your forms have told me much, I'm of the opinion that you can never really know someone until you've met them in person. Before you all get going, I thought it best to have a little icebreaker session. So. Grab a drink and let's get going. You're welcome to browse behind the bar for what you want, though I'd avoid the oddly colored drinks if I were you."

The man grabs a bottle from behind the bar, pours a strange blue liquid into his glass, takes a sip, then begins.

"Hello. My name is Benjamin Robert Octavian Beth. I'm a billionaire philanthropist and noted eccentric. My hobbies include sampling and collecting unusual beverages and using my vast resources to create complete changes in life circumstances(for fun). I like unusual beverages, interesting people, boring people who want to become interesting, and games. I dislike people who are late,  or spiteful, people who are satisfied with a boring life, and mimes. First person to take a drink goes next!"

It occurs to you that there are only six form recipients here. One more is later to come. And late.

((Jesus, three people chose orange. I guess it really is an appealing color. I'll retcon Damien's to yellow then.))

"Spiteful types, eh?", Damien inquires before he too steps up to the bar and pours himself a glass. Taking a sip, he cocks an eyebrow at the odd flavor before setting the glass down and turning so he may face the rest of the party. "Hello, my name is Damien Voss. Like our friend here, I despise the mundane and loathe those who are satisfied with it. My hobbies include analysis of all sorts of theories and ideas. I find it a bit pretentious to denote myself as some form of philosopher, but I can't help but think of myself as such. I take trips, when I can afford it, to strange and new places in search of unusual knowledge and factoids. I have a particular interest in the occult- and, fittingly enough, I find that there is a saying that rings true with what I feel to be my very existence.", Damien pauses dramatically, clearly enjoying the audience provided by the party. "The forbidden fruit is always the sweetest."

With that, he quickly finishes his drink and leans against the bar, anxious to hear of the others.

Tali'ah steps up to the bar and gives a nervous giggle. "I'm really not good with introductions. There's always too much to say and... ah, right, I need to get a drink. Forgot that part." With that, she peruses the bottles and looks for one that seems normal enough. Upon locating it, she pours herself a glass and tastes, seeming satisfied with the flavour. "So, my name is Tali'ah, and I'm here because I'm looking for someone. Well, if I say that it sounds like I have a specific individual in mind. Rather, I'm just looking for someone... new. Someone who can make me feel things I've never felt before. That... sounded a little more romantic than I anticipated, but I guess that's also not the wrong impression to give." She lets out another giggle, and steps back with a pleasant smile.

In wary steps and with uncomfortable feeling Jacob steped toward the bar and took a non alcoholic or the least alcoholic drink there, timidly saying "I'm sorry mister Octavian, I'm probibly not the kind of person you wanted here, I don't want to become an intresting person, just one there's something to tell about him, I would understand if you want me to leave"

”Guess I’m next, then.” Valentine saunters over to the bar, before pulling a hip flask out of his pocket and taking a hearty swig. ”The name’s Valentine Redcastle, though my friends call me Rusty. I enjoy the simple things in life; warm beds, freshly cut lawns, good food, and cold whiskey. I dislike arguing, stinging insects, spiders, and my neighbor Floyd. Don’t got no hobbies, unless you call talking to people a hobby. I’m just here too see what there is to see before I die, that’s all.” He steps back with a warm smile, to hear what everybody else has to say.

((Heh, just because I used orange ink on the form doesn't mean my voice is orange. :P))

Bjorn climbs carefully up a bar stool and plants itself on top. "Get me something very weak, in a shot glass. I do not weigh very much; trust me, a little goes a long way."
The cuttlefish loosens the straps on its breathing mask, so that it can move it out of the way enough to take a sip.
"Ahem. My name is Bjorn. Not many of my kind venture up to your 'surface' world, but I found the water quite boring, to be honest. I'm up here to see what the world really has to offer. After all, no matter how long you live, there will always be something new to see. I strive to better understand this world. Not just the surface, but the universe that we all share. I filled out your little form so that I could find out what all this is about, really. Once I've understood Benjamin here's intent fully, the rest of the trip I suspect will simply be payment for that knowledge."

"Hm. Well, the trip's not yet started, so if you want to leave, you can go. But consider this... what makes someone interesting? There are the obvious factors..." Benjamin gestures at Bjorn. "... like so. Physical form can make one interesting. But personality can make one interesting as well, as can skills, attributes and talents, or one's relationships, or one's history. Interesting does not necessarily mean strange, or unusual. What I think you're trying to say, correct me if I'm wrong, is that you don't want to be strange or bizarre. That's okay. We can work with that. Part of the trip, after all, is learning. If what you want to learn would make you strange, we can do that. I've got a good few clowns, hypnotists, magicians, performers, and the like on call if you want to learn from them. But if you want to consider yourself normal? I'm sure we could find you a good computer programming tutor, or maybe... well, what I'm trying to say, is that interesting doesn't have to mean strange. Before you consider leaving, consider the opportunity we're giving you. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and you're one of the few people we advertised to. If you let it go, you'll never get another shot at something as amazing as this."

"You'll understand completely what this is all about when you've finished the trip. But for now? This is an opportunity to become interesting, to cast free the ties that bond you and remake yourself. This is an opportunity to learn things you would never have a chance to learn anytime else. The only cost is the time the trip will take. But trust me... it's well worth it."

"Where is that seventh person anyway? I made the location quite clear in the form..."

"Fair point." Benjamin pulls a sleek black smartphone out of his pocket and dials a number.

"Hello? Nikki? Could you check on the seventh candidate? I know that they've definitely signed their form, but they're late. They might need a bit of help finding this place. It is a bit out of the way, after all. Thanks!"

"You would be surprised at how few people do. Or maybe that's something exclusive to humans, not reading legal documents. I don't know."

Damien scoffs. "I assure you, I've read the paper. I'm aware of the whole clause involving harm to myself, and giving up my body and soul if I am to frustrate the efforts of the journey. A man such as myself is familiar with bargains... forbidden fruit may taste sweetest, but it tends to turn to ashes in your mouth if you don't plan for the consequences."

With that addressed, he turns to the sole woman of the party.
She lets out another giggle, and steps back with a pleasant smile.
"Ah, human emotion. Something I could rhapsodize on and on about... but brevity is the soul of wit, so I'll make this short. What you're looking for is rare and precious. Good luck.", he nods slightly in her direction with a smirk on his face before reaching over to the bottle of the odd liquor and pouring himself another glass. "Tastes strange at first, but it grows on you."

"Sorry, forgot to talk about myself, I'm Jacob Andrew, I like reading and quite places, I hate load noises, too much social interaction and my current job for having both of those."

"I for one don't buy that, Jacob. With all due respect, I think you're speaking out your ass- you must be, or you wouldn't sign up for this. You mean to tell me there isn't a bone in your body that seeks to experience what no other mortal has? To be one of the few to know something others have tried for centuries to learn and failed? Nothing of the sort? If that's the case, I'd take the former of our kind host's recommendations and leave before you get involved in something exciting.". Damien takes a quick swig of his glass, clearly trying to fix his face back into the the intrigued grin from before but visibly struggling.

"...and I was starting to think that I was the most boring person here."

Ronald Woods grabs a glass and pours himself a drink. "Hello, my name is Ronald Woods, but you can just call me 'Woods'. I'm a soon-to-be-retired English teacher, a connoisseur of whatever it is they try to pass off as coffee in the employee lounge, and still probably the most boring person here.

Although - having know some very interesting people in my day - I'm not entirely sure that last one is a bad thing."

"... seriously? Well that's quite a bit of bad luck. Ah well. Six will do. Thanks, Nikki. See you later!"

Benjamin hangs up.

"Well. Apparently lucky number seven was hit by a bus on the way to the bar. He'll live, but unfortunately he won't be able to join us. What a shame. Anyways... now that we're all here and thoroughly introduced to each other, I say it's about time we start our journey."

And then Benjamin pulls a black sheet out of his trenchcoat, throws it over himself... and it settles to the ground, landing on nothing. Benjamin's vanished. What is this guy, a magician?

Then the bar starts shaking. Purple sparks spew from the lights. Surprisingly, none of the glasses and bottles and the like fall from their shelves and racks.

Something weird is happening.

With the sound of a thud, the shaking stops.

The bar's bright yellow front door opens, revealing Benjamin. "And... you have arrived!"

Looking out the front door, you see a metallic corridor where before you saw a parking lot. "Welcome to the Wanderlust, our ship. Interdimensional space ship, that is. I'll give you a bit to settle in before we set out to our first destination. A word to the wise: even among interdimensional space ships, this one's abnormal. Please don't get yourself or anyone else killed. Resurrection is expensive. Shouldn't be too hard as long as you stay out of the red or black areas. If you do decide to go exploring in those areas, fine, but for crying out loud visit the armory and pick up a weapon first."

"If you have any questions, talk to Nico or Nikki. They shouldn't be too hard to find." Benjamin pulls another black sheet from his coat and throws it over himself. Naturally, it falls to the floor, revealing no trace of Benjamin.

Damien was the first to go, in search of a library of forbidden knowledge and one of Benjamin's assistants!

(5)

Truly, the vessel was vast. There had to be a library in here somewhere...

"You look a little lost."

Just behind Damien was a young woman in a red dress. She had pair of red draconic wings along with a lizard-like red tail. Considering the circumstances, they were probably real.

"Need any help?"

Damien was of course looking for a library.

"Well that's right down this way."

After a short bit of walking, Damien reached a yellow door which the woman threw open.

"And here you are. Be careful with the books, there's a moody ape in there who hates it when you damage them. The books are color coded for your safety. Don't spend too long in there, the Wanderlust will jump soon and you don't want to be in a non-shielded area when that happens. Any questions?"

Jacob left the bar shortly after.

(4)

While the ship was large and confusing, he soon heard voices in the distance. "Are you sure, Nico? You know how difficult piloting this thing is."

"Cmon. You know I've always wanted to fly the Wanderlust! And it's perfectly safe, you've seen the Void scanner readouts yourself--"

"The Void is never safe. But alright then Nico. You'll have your shot at it. I've waited long enough to give you a chance anyway. It's a wonderful thing, honestly, to fly between realms."

Benjamin and one of his assistants were nearby.

Bjorn wished to have some sort of protection for himself.

(5)

After a short bit of wandering, he noticed a yellow hatch in the ceiling. Climbing up a ladder, he found a room packed full of differently colored shelves and racks.

(3)

He had no idea where to start, though...

Mr. Woods was the next to leave the bar, leaving several confused others behind. While he was at it, he picked up Benjamin's sheet. Maybe he could use it for something.

(6)

After turning a corner, he found a yellow door leading into a room with a massive crystal pillar in the middle. Touching it, he felt... awareness. Of the ship. It wasn't exactly a normal map, and his headache was rapidly building. The ship... was changing. Shifting. This wasn't some static vessel. No, the location of everything was constantly changing. Navigation was going to be a challenge... but at least the change was slow.

(Headache. Navigation bonus: +1 to next ship navigation roll.)

Ah-ha! I see you have fallen into my clever trap, for you have defaulted to using male pronouns to refer to Bjorn, when I was always careful to use "it" instead! Technically, you don't know if this is a boy cuttlefish or a girl cuttlefish!
Ignoring the fact that Bjorn is a name for a man. Though that doesn't REALLY mean anything; the cuttlefish probably just thought it sounded like a neat name to use in human-land.

Ahem.
Yellow rack, definitely. All the best things come on yellow racks.

"Ow."

Reeling with an intense headeache and a baffling realization, Mr Woods wonders if he's just having a really bad dream. Perhaps, if he dies, he'll wake up back in his crummy flat in California?

Afraid that he might be wrong - and terrified that he might be right - Mr. Woods decides he must arm himself against whatever dangers he will find.

Go to the Armory.
