Title: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on October 29, 2014, 11:01:57 pm
Welcome to ChronoMouse, the time-travelling, interdimensional game of Cat and Mouse!

This 1-Player RTD is about time/dimensional-travelling. It will use a d100 instead of the usual d6. You will be playing as a man with a wrist-worn time/dimension travel machine, on the run from many, many people who want you dead. The point is to try and survive until you get saved, something that has a very small chance of happening each time you travel between dimensions. What I mean is: Every time you travel, I roll up some random place. There is an extremely small chance that you will - in fact - get to the place you want and win. If you want to join, just say so below. No standardized character sheet needed. On the other hand, you can give as much information as you want on the guy (or girl) you are playing, and as long as it isn't really.. absurd.. I'll happily accept it. (Note: You won't get any bonuses to your roles because of your background, though you might possess knowledge a "basic" character would not)

Here is how the ChronoMouse (your time/dimension machine) works: When you choose to go to a new place, say some random, three-digit number, and that dimension will be "assigned" that number. Then I will roll a bunch of dice to decide what place it is. From then on, whenever you choose to change dimensions again, you can instead choose to go to that dimension instead by punching in its number (that means that you will not have that chance of winning on that "jump" since you are going to a previsited location). The time-traveling aspect is a little different, and much easier, to use. You type in the time you want to go to, and it will send you there then (plus or minus a few seconds - or minutes if you're really unlucky). Every time you use the ChronoMouse's dimension traveling capabilities, you will be unable to travel through dimensions for 30-60 minutes (you can still travel through time). After that period, though, you will still have to expose the ChronoMouse to sunlight so that it can be used again. When you travel through time, you will have to wait an equal time to that you have traveled divided by 2 (ex: You travel 5 minutes into the past or future, and you will have to wait 2 minutes and 30 seconds before you time-travel again). Your "time-travel" cooldown will in no way affect your dimension-traveling ( and visa versa). Your ChronoMouse also acts as a world clock, telling you the time, date, and year to which you travel. There is also a little readout which will tell you how much time you have remaining until you can time-travel or dimension-travel. Your Chronomouse is bound to you and cannot be taken from you unless you are dead. There are other functions yet to be discovered.

Now to the rules: I will not have a waitlist, as I do not believe that by the time it gets to a person, he will be interested (it will take a while). Also, please post often. If you are going to be unable to post for a while, please tell me in advance, and I will wait until you return.

That's all I have to say. Just dive in and prepare to have fun!

You remember... running. Running for your life. You punched in the first number you could think of. Welcome to 000, buddy.

You find yourself in a forest, beside a tree. When you look at it, you realize it is actually 3 different trees winding upwards like thick rope. Past the tree you hear laughing cheering and the sound of music. It is night, but there is light coming from the place past the tree.

You round the tree and see quite an unexpected sight. In a large clearing, humanoid beings are sitting on stumps surrounding 10 large tables. On each of the 10 tables are 4 humanoids, doing what looks like playing some strange musical instruments. The instruments seem to be perfectly fashioned out of natural material, and bear an uncanny resemblance to lyres. All in all, there are probably 400 of these beings watching the performance. Many of them are not sitting down, and some seem to be dancing to the rhythm of the music and the flashing of the lights strung from the evenly spaced trees in the clearing. The scene is beautiful, but you know that you should go. You don't know when your pursuers might arrive.

You approach the tables, while the forest folk standing still, curious and apprehensive at the same time. At the tables, you hold out your hand and gesture to the lyres, but they are unwilling to give up their instruments.                                                                 PS You have another 55 minutes until you can dimension-travel again.

((I don't think you're taking this too seriously, but sure))

[31] The musicians back away from you and one sets his lyre carefully in front of you. He opens his mouth and your ChronoMouse buzzes while he says, in perfect English, "Take the instrument, but please don't hurt us." You think they might have misunderstood your meaning.

[72 - 10] You think you calm them down a little. Your Chronomouse lets out a light buzz as one says to another, "Can he... understand us?" Suddenly you feel a change in the air, a sort of static whine. The others also seem to feel it, and start backing away from the side of the forest from which you came. Your Chronowatch's display has the words, "Unknown device detected. Impact imminent."

Start running! Running away!
Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on November 01, 2014, 02:24:34 pm
[09] You run like the wind, out of the clearing and into the thickets. When you make it through - though - you find yourself in a thick swamp, with murky sludge up to your knees. Behind you, you hear a crackle and a gust of wind. After a brief pause, you hear a hysterical voice in the air. "I can see you Jenkins!" You find it slightly amusing that it the voice of your business partner, Nale.

Nale? From Accounting? What are you doing here?
Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on November 01, 2014, 04:53:38 pm
"Accounting?! Is that all that I an to you now?" he yells hysterically, "Am I nobody now? We were PARTNERS, Jenkins. PARTNERS! You're just throw me away for some minor dispute?"

Then you remember what happened: You and Nale were cofounders of Charon, a company working secretly on devices that could move between dimensions. One day when your company had an especially great breakthrough, you and him had a... disagreement. He believed that he should give the technology to the government. You of course knew the consequences. He the government found out, they would not only seize the equipment, but do things so terrible with it, it would be unthinkable. He was unconvinced. So that night you stole the most expensive piece of equipment - the ChronoMouse - and ran for it.

You snap out of your memories to see that he is now much closer and waving a gun around. Crap.

How the heck did you follow me here? You can't have the Mouse, Nate! The government can't have this Mouse! Everything will go to waste!
Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on November 01, 2014, 06:56:32 pm
"You're not the only one with access to the lab, Jenkins," he says as he holds up his own wrist anchored device. You see it is a early prototype nicknamed the "Hitchhiker." It was unable to travel through dimensions like it was supposed to, but could follow "rifts" created by other devices in their wake. It was pretty damn useless until now.

"Now hand over the ChronoMouse, Jenkins. That's not a question, it's an order."

[85] He spins around, gun in hand, toward the direction you pointed. You leap out of the mud [38] but he's too fast. He turns at you with the gun and fires a shot over your right shoulder. "That was a warning shot," he threatens.

You quickly punch in the time, and slam your hand down hard on the button. [60-5 vs 23] Before Nale can even react, you're gone.

After a brief flash of light, you see the thick bushes that you trampled through now undisturbed, too dense to look through. Suddenly your ChronoMouse lets out a buzz and you hear from the clearing, "Where.. where did he go?" You recognize it to be that of the beings.

[66] You peek through the foliage and see the musicians carefully get off the tables, one of them without a lyre. You look down at the lyre that you took with you. Suddenly you understand: When going back in time, the ChronoMouse must have deleted all copies of the things you took with you, including the copy of yourself, to prevent a paradox. To them, it must have looked like you and the lyre just.. disappeared.

Suddenly you feel a change in the air, a sort of static whine. Your Chronowatch's display has the words, "[TMB-42] detected. Impact imminent."

You do not need to do anything to conceal yourself, the dense foliage already does that. Suddenly, you hear a crackle and a gust of wind. After a brief pause, you hear a hysterical voice in the air. "Where are you Jenkins?!" It is the voice of your business partner, Nale.

You observe the lake for a minute or so, but see nothing out of the order nary. Upon dipping your lyre into, however, the water starts to hiss and bubble. When you take out the lyre, the wood is cracked and warped.

You start skirting along the lake, the sun rising in front of you. You also notice a small button that wasn't there before. It is in the corner of the touch screen, and has a "!" In the middle. It is pulsating softly.

You look around hastily, [97] and out of the corner of your eye you see a disturbance in the ground. When you touch it, you feel something underneath give away to reveal a trapdoor. You jump down immediatly, into a small thin shaft about 6 feet deep, landing harmlessly on a pile of leaves on the bottom. You climb halfway up the makeshift ladder and shut the trapdoor just in time to hear a woosh and electric crackle in the air. Then there is only silence.

You look around and see that the only thing here, inside the place underneath the trapdoor, is the 6 ft tall, 2 ft by 2 ft area with a makeshift ladder attached to the wall and a pile of soft leaves at the bottom. Above you hear someone call out, "Jenkins. Where did you take the Chronomouse?.. Jenkins?"

Heck, even the places you'll be going to will have some people who'll want you dead. You know why? The ChronoMouse. Once you put it on, its impossible to take off unless you die. And if you don't get out of here, that's what will happen." He pauses for a second. "You want to know why they all want it so much? Ill tell you. Us scientists never told you or Nale, but up until the ChronoMouse, none of the prototypes could ACTUALLY travel through time. That night we finished it, everyone wanted it. I guess its a good thing you got it first." He sighs, exhausted after his monologue. "Here," he says, "take it," and hands you his device. "You've started the update, I see. Good. The first one should allow it to attach to exterior devices. After it finishes, attach this. It should decrease the cool down significantly." He them proceeds to punch in commands on his device. "And remember," he says, "don't stop. Ever." Then, before you can even look closely at his device, he presses a button, and disappears, leaving you alone, his device still on your open palm.

Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on November 03, 2014, 10:58:27 pm
You look at the device and are genuinely surprised at what it is. This device was one of the first ever made, before the scientists even made dimension travel possible, or even dreamed of time travel. It was their first attempt to get someone to travel anywhere at all, so short-ranged teleportation was the first choice. Why would he take one of the most basic device instead of the later ones? As you look it over, you see it has been slightly modified with extra wires on it and a small chip taped to the side. It looks like he did it in a hurry, from the sheer sloppiness of it all.

Title: Re: ChronoMouse

You take the knife and cut the wires off of the device, and the poorly attached chip follows. They fizzle slightly on the ground, then lie still. At last the beings part from their leader and he stands up, supported by one of the others. "Thank you for saving my life," he tells you, "I would like to repay you in anyway possible." Each of the other beings also gives you their gratitude.

He thinks for a while. At last he says, "I see that you are being hunted by many. Though we can provide no weapons to protect you, we can supply you with aid against your wounds." He turns toward one of the beings, "Please fetch the man a nice stock of our bandages. He will need them on our journey." Complying, the being and others return in about 3 minutes with about 5 yards of the stuff. They set down at your feet. "Goodbye," says your friend, "and may you have a great and lasting journey."

Your ChronoMouse lets out a short beep, and the screen lights up in the darkness. As you stealthily leave the plaza, you take a glance at your screen. It reads, "Update complete: Ready for attachment," before going dark once more. Just outside the plaza entrance, you hear a voice in the darkness. "You are under arrest for violating curfew. Put your hands on the back of your head immediately. Do NOT resist."

There is a flash of light and you then you are all alone, still standing in the street, handcuff still on your wrist. As you look around, you hear a message, like the one before, coming out of the speaker poles: "Attention. Please return to your homes. Curfew will begin in 10 minutes."

You walk up to the main doors, locked with a key card lock. You doubtfully swipe your CHARON card - and to your surprise - it opens. You look inside the lobby and see that it looks exactly like the one you remember, except it is entirely devoid of people and has "ARCHON" written across the desk instead of "CHARON." To the left is a door which leads to a meeting room, which is barely used, and not even the janitors go in there anymore. On the right lie the bathrooms and a small room with cubicles, also unused. At the back are two sets of elevators, which can access  the co-founder's offices at the top, to the labs and storeroom in the basements.

You punch in the floor number on the elevator buttons. You once again swipe your card, and once again are surprised when it worked. This all feels... strange. Why is it here? Why on some alien dimension? How can your card work? How come it's all the same?! Your thoughts are interrupted by the elevator doors opening. You look at the storeroom. It is the same as the one you remember, with boxes of wires and electrical equipment on floor to ceiling shelves running from one end of the room to the next, with a little space to allow people to go around the perimeter. You remember that there is a locked door in the back which is the storeroom for past prototypes.

[38] Suddenly you feel very sick. The smell of your blood and of the guard behind you makes you retch. You surge forward and empty the contents of last afternoon's lunch right in the guards face.  The guard drops his gun on the ground and vomits in a way that would humble a skunk. Than why are your wounds healed? Why do you not have the gun? Why are you in front of the elevators when you blacked it in front of the prototype holding room door? you check your ChronoMouse, but all it does is prove the impossible theory. The time travel cooldown is on, and it's set for 5 minutes. The dimension travel cooldown also seems to be a little bit off. It reads you have 16 minutes left when you swear it should be less. Your thoughts are interrupted as you hear the thud of the elevator you had entered from begin to rise.

You look at the prototypes. There doesn't seem to be a unique or different one, most of them are different from the others, if only just slightly. You do notice, however, that the more you go to the left, the less and less they seem like the Chronomouse. They all have nifty signs in the cases, too. One reads:

 "ChronoMouse-394

Fires RAMN, but not to degree which is needed. Energy drains much too fast to make travel using RAMN discs possible. Layout too complicated. STATA does not work. IRENE does not work. No receiver module for self monitored installations. Data Screen incomprehensible."

Suddenly you hear the door handle turn.

You slide behind one of the rows. [62 + 10 vs 95] "Hey! You there!" he calls out, "Have you see... are you okay?" You notice belatedly that from where you are crouching from behind one of the glass cases, he must see you guard's cap. You hear footfalls coming toward you.

[04 + 10 vs 10] "Oh... okay." He looks very doubtful, but doesn't seem to see through your disguise. "What were you doing here?" he asks. He seems to snap out of his thoughts. "Jenkins! Where is he? Where is he?! Did you see him?!"

[16 + 10 vs 72] "...backup? I'm the backup." He looks at you. "You! You're Jenkins!" he yells, and takes his baton out. Suddenly your ChronoMouse begins to beep. "Hey, stop that," says the guard. It beeps faster and faster.

Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on November 11, 2014, 02:02:51 pm
The ChronoMouse's display is flashing with strange symbols. A few words also flash by, too fast to read. "Stop it! yells the guard, and you look up. You see all of the ChronoMouse dopplegangers are flashing, and their beeping fills the room. The guard swings at you with his baton. The baton swings down, and just as it is about hit you, all hell breaks loose. The world stretches, the beeping of the Chronomouse is now a long, loud whine.  There is a brilliant flash of bright light. [69] You grit your teeth, but you manage to stay conscious. Then the light is gone. You open your eyes, and you feel that you are laying on the cold, wet ground. When the world stops spinning, you see that you are in the middle of a huge crater.

Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on November 11, 2014, 10:51:58 pm
You look around. [71] You think you're still in the same dimension, judging from your surroundings. Also, you see that this crater is still surrounded by (what's left of) the buildings that surrounded the ARCHON facility. So you're basically in the same place. You still, however, have no idea what the heck hell just happened, though from the ringing in your ears - and the fact that you can't really hear anything except that, it must have been pretty damn loud.

The ChronoMouse's display is back to normal. Another update has begun, you notice, along with the completion of both the time travel cool down and the dimension travel cool down. Suddenly, a siren sounds at the top of the crater. Blue and red lights of a police car begin to flash and you hear a voice from a hand-held loudspeaker: "Put your hands on the back of your head! If you do not comply, you will be shot!"

[88 vs 23] You slap down on the button before you even hear the shot. Then you are transported.

You appear to be in some sort of history museum. The skeleton of a mammoth is on display in front of you. You look around and find yourself face to face with a bearded man! [62] You stumble back, but you catch yourself. You realize that was just a wax statue of a caveman. You are standing in one of the exhibits. Luckily, there is no glass partition blocking of the exhibit.

There's nothing of too much interest, but as you read it, a part of it catches your eye: "...could be possible in 2030, but a report of a valuable prototype gone missing has raised the expected time..." You hear a tour guide coming toward the room, talking to a group of people. So the museum isn't closed!

The group approaches the room and you hear the tor guide speaking, "Here is the last part of our tour, the future section." You hear a few "oohs" and "ahhs." The tour guide than enters the room, group in tow. [67 vs 11] You slip unnoticed into the group, and continues her speech. "This is Dr. Gregory Almman, a very well respected man. As some of you may know, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year..." Your concentration fades as you realize that the man in the picture is Greg!

As you stand bewildered, he grabs your wrist [15 vs 67]. He looks at you, his eyes lacking any emotion, and says, "Hold still." Then there's a flash of light. You open your eyes. You then charge the janitor, [36 vs 30] catching him off guard. [45 vs 47 - 5] You jostle him, your hands pushing him forward (theres still a wall of bars in between you and him, you know). Meanwhile, the guard on the ground fires, missing both of you.

He fires off two more shots at the group, just to make sure. He doesn't notice you pull out the gun until it's too late to react. Nope. Not at all. Meanwhile, the guards go up the catwalk, approaching the janitor.

[92] You manage to put your taser down your pants without setting it off, but there is nothing else you can do except holster your gun. Oh, and you put your knife inside your pant leg. Meanwhile, the guards go to the janitor. One puts his handcuffs on his wrist, but the arm hangs down, limp. The other turns his head over, and the janitor falls to the ground completely. He smells his breath. "Cyanide."

[80 vs 36] His eyes bug out. As he whips out his radio, he yells into it, "Evacuate everyone from cell block D and C! Send in a bomb disposal team into cell block E now! Mr. Eddington has attached a possible bomb to a hostage. Now now now!" He begins to back away from you.

"I'm sorry, but we'll have to keep you here," he says, as he walks down the catwalk, still facing you. He's gone completely procedure-driven now. There will be no way to convince him to do otherwise.

Title: Re: ChronoMouse

Those are the original guards who went into the room. They are at double doors, down at the bottom level.

((Note: From the point of view of someone who has just entered through the double doors, your cell would be on the right wall, on the upper level, about midway across the wall.))

After 2 minutes, the bomb disposal team enters the room.  They walk up the stairwell carefully, at last reaching your cell. Up close, you see that there are 2 of them, one in front, and the other holding some supplies in the rear. The one in front looks at the ChronoMouse. "Strangest bomb I've ever seen," he says, as the other goes in for a look. "Yup," replies the other, as he takes out a small tool. As he hands it to the guy in front, you see it looks like a miniature, electric spinning saw.

Do you guys know what you're doing?
Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on November 29, 2014, 11:28:39 am
[07] the guy gives you the sternest look you've ever seen, before bringing the minisaw down on the ChronoMouse. The blade makes a small cut in the side, but nothing nearly enough to help him. He tries again, but this time, sparks begin to fly from the saw, and and the blade pops off, flying through the air. It hits you in the shoulder, where it immbeds itself about a half an inch into the skin. [07] You feint.

When you wake up, you are alone, still in the cell. The blade is gone from your arm, but whoever removed it chose not to bandage the wound, for it is bleeding profusely. The ChronoMouse has a large cut in the side, but it seems to be working fine. The only difference is that instead of the time travel cooldown timer, there is the message: "Time travel disabled."

It seems to have been cut by something sharp. [56] Judging by how even the cut is, it must have been done by some sort of tool.

[23] You yell and you yell, but you hear no one coming. Then the doors open quietly. Two men in black suits enter. They stop, and in unison, look up at you. It's them.

After a brief pause they begin to walk in unison up the steps to the catwalk. When they get to your cell, one of them fishes out a key card and swipes it through the reader next to the cell. The cell opens and they step in.

Title: Re: ChronoMouse

"You will come with us," says the one in front. "You will not escape again," says the other. They begin to advance on you threateningly. Thats hostile enough. [08 vs 56, 15] They grab you before you can can even move. "Stay still," says one, as hey each grab onto one arm, rendering you powerless to resist. Then there is a bright flash of light.

...and nothing happens. One of the robots falls on the ground - rigid - while the other doesnt move at all. The clatter echos across the empty room.

[72 vs 82 - 15] You barely manage to get yourself out of his grip and out of the cell before the standing robot grinds back to life. He snatches at you but you duck out of the way, and you run down to the double doors. The bodies are still here.

Try to find an exit
Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on December 03, 2014, 07:19:42 pm
The only exits here are the double doors. You take them without hesitation. The hallway outside is completely empty, save for a potted plant to the left of the doors. To your right the hallway continues until it turns left. To your right there is another pair of doors twenty feet down, followed by another and another after that. At the end is large door made of vertical metal bars, probably sealing off this section from the others.

Go right and take the first pair of doors
Title: Re: ChronoMouse
Post by: Tomasque on December 03, 2014, 07:59:49 pm
((Akk! The double doors actually in to the left. Whatever. So you go in the door direction. 'Kay.))

You make a mad dash for the doors. [89 vs 15] You hear a thump as the closing door hits the robot in the head. Then you hear an explosion, small but loud. You turn around after reaching the doors to find your assailant lying in the hallway, his head now the pieces littering the ground. By some miracle, you are not hurt.

[56 - 10 vs 15] You run down the hallway, back to the other set of double doors, leaving the clumsy robot in the dust. Quickly, you slam the door behind you, and find yourself in a room exactly like the one you started in.
