DF General Discussion / Villains!
« on: June 03, 2012, 12:33:09 pm »
So from what I can gather, the next release after the current bug fixes is going to include villains or villainous entities in one way or another. With the addition of necromancers, werebeasts, vampires and bandit warlords rather recently (the last two years...) This is pretty convenient. So yes, let's discuss the implications of villains, what we know/predict will be happening with villains.

Also i'll gather up any information that we find out from devlogs here.

Yes yet another "You are" game, we need more of them damnit! In this game you will play as a creature that you would traditionally find in a dungeon (a roguelike dungeon, a Zelda dungeon, a Dungeons and dragons dungeon filled with dragons who inhabit dungeons and so on). I'll let you decide folks. Pick any creature that inhabits a dungeon! Preferably a rather common one that's not to late into the dungeon.

Eventually an adventurer will come to the dungeon, he/she/it will either kill you or you'll kill it first! Overtime there'll be stronger adventurers or adventurer parties. There's some governance of the dungeon by the more powerful creatures (The lich lords and boss like creatures for example) but dungeon critters fight other dungeon critters from time to time. Also, watch out for traps!

So pick a creature! Oh and this may be done somewhat in picture format (I'm not very good with GIMP or Photoshop or paint or anything, so if you pick the billion headed beast I can't really draw them, there shall probably be a map though!)

Post the name of the creature and a link to a page with some information on them (Like a wiki). Or you could be fancy and hyperlink the name. It's your choice folks!

Play With Your Buddies / Bay12 Community Terraria Succession game.
« on: June 10, 2011, 08:11:59 pm »
Greetings Bay12ers, escaped lunatics and random lurkers! After thorough discussion in the Terraria thread (A few posts) I've decided to make a Terraria Succession game. However, my computer would lag too much to host the server, so If anyone has a good enough computer to host a server that would be great. (I'll have a stress test for my computer with eight people on the server though).
Now here's roughly how this will work:

1. People signup and pick a profession,(Obviously nothing that's not in terraria, so being a legendary soapmaker is out).
2. Once seven people have signed up, they and the admin (Who'll make screenshots, write it up etc) will start.
3. Using the items in the embark chest only, they will have one Terraria week to do their part of the fortress.
4. This will then be passed onto the next group of people.
5. I encourage signing up more than once, since I don't expect hundreds of people, and that way we can get things like goblin invasions actually happening).
6. Later on you can be a noble and make mandates (Nothing ridiculous like Jungle armour when people are only just getting Shadowscale).
7. After a few people things like the Eye of cthulu will be summoned.
8. Leaving items for the next group is recommended.
9. Please start with new characters.
10. Of course some DF things don't apply (Hauling one piece of stone at a time of course).
11. Each person will preferably get a room (However, fun may prevent that).
12. If one person is without a room, seeing people die constantly etc, they can tantrum if they choose too. In which case they have to turn on PvP.
Here's the sign up list, basically just your name and your profession:
Emperornuthulu: Carpenter/Woodcutter (Also expedition leader if the server can hold).
NirurTorir:Miner.
Uruk: Mason.
Nevyn: Miner.
The scout: Fighter/Explorer.
Snowman (Sir aaron):Grower/Brewer/Marksman.
3:Future hammerer.
Breadbocks:Woodcutter/marksdwarf.
Bowlsoldier:Miner.
Darvi: Mason/stoneworker.
eerr: Brickmaker/Miner.

   Hello there Bay12!

So recently I've been browsing through the Forum games and roleplay section... to see a rather lack of Roleplays. While there's plenty of DnD games, handfulls of strategy, turn based games there's very few roleplays. And none like what I'm planning currently. For those of you in the dark to what I mean by roleplays, i'll explain it by linking to an actual roleplay forum. http://roleplayerguild.com/f9/. This is roleplay without stats which end up bogging down things, or making it actually harder than Dwarf fortress to learn. And this being Bay 12, I expect by the time we're through the world in this MegaRoleplay will be looking like a dwarven fortress (Probably Boatmurdered).

Also, this being Bay12 the Roleplay in question will be of course inspired by Dwarf fortress. Meaning, that's right, it's a high fantasy setting. And like Dwarf fortress, I plan on updating this very often. Now you may wonder what I mean by update often. I plan on adding new forms of content often, for example new continents being discovered, ancient ruins unearthed, tomes of power being stolen, the usual fantasy mish mash.

Also, I plan on making a huge world, and I mean a HUGE world. There'll be all sorts of factions, creatures, civilisations, locations and history scattered about. And, since this is a roleplay i'm going to let Bay 12 run free. Yes there will be a plot of sorts underway, but you're free to do what ever you want. Do you want to run a thieves guild? Go for it. Farm plants, then poison them? Why not. Become a member of the city guard? Go ahead!

Now, i've made this topic for a couple of reasons.

  • It will serve as a planning and wishlist thread, meaning that if you want something in the roleplay then you can have it.
  • In the future, it will serve as an OOC thread, also to discuss new things that should be added.

The rest is currently being worked on, although you can sign up to say you're going to take part below.

Hello there bay12, I'm planning for some sort of megaproject which is based off the city of ember megaproject on the wiki.  http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Megaprojects#City_of_Ember Here is the link. However, I'm wondering how should I go about this, should I build it all in the caverns, or only partly in the caverns? Also, what embark setup should I use, when should I close the gates forever and is there anything you in particular want in the fortress. I have the choice of two civilisations, one has four mountain halls, so it's the standard amount of migrants. One has no mountain halls, so either I get the first two migrant waves and thats all, or I get no migrant waves at all.

Both have their own challenges, so which one should I pick? Should I have a way of letting migrants into the fortress, or should it just be a set amount?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Repercussions of fun: We need members!
« on: March 14, 2011, 03:00:16 pm »
ATTENTION EVERYONE!

We are going to play a game, Bay12. This isn’t your standard, imaginative, innovative, exciting fantasy game that is fair and awesome. No, that’s not good enough for Bay12. Instead I propose we play a different type of fantasy game, an awful, random, cruel, brutal, bloody, downright evil game that the dungeon master has no experience in whatsoever. It’s a dungeons and dragons clone, but without many of the obvious things that make Dungeons and Dragons the main fantasy game of several people. Think of it as living in Boatmurdered, if Boatmurdered was more random. That’s right, more random.
Of course in order to play this game we need to have a background story worthy of this game/role-play. And no I’m not going to simply copy some awful fan fiction from the internet. The story is as follows:
IN A TIME LONG AGO, BUT NOT IN A GALAXY FAR AWAY.
IN A POST APOCALYPTIC MEDIEVAL LAND GONE WILD.
LIVES TWO MAIN FACTIONS, WHO ARE ONLY REALLY IMPORTANT TO YOU.
THE GODS, WHO DECIDED THAT THE WORLD DESERVED TO BE MESSED WITH IN EVERYWAY POSSIBLE.
AND THE HEROES, WHO LIVE TO “SERVE” THE PEOPLE BY LOOTING EVERYTHING.
YOU ARE ONE OF THESE.
THERE’S ALSO ALL SORTS OF WONDERFUL FANTASY CREATURES, INCLUDING DINOSAURS.
  NOW, LET US PLAY!
If you are either wondering where the actual story is, or why that didn’t make any sense then you can either live with it or find a better thread. Seriously, there are a lot of them.
Since this is a Dungeons and dragonsesque game we have classes, not stats though, this game works more like the Dwarf fortress system of fighting. Here are the classes:

AHNOLD: The AHNOLD is your standard hack and slash warrior class, with one goal: To kill stuff with a big weapon.  Also voiced by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wields more traditional knight weapons (axes, swords).

Shizard: A wizard like character that specifies in all magic’s, magic is potentially random and has a large chance of blowing up your face. (Uses infinity figure dice)

Thieving bastard: You steal things, backstab people, and run away. Truly the most heroic and lawful good people in the world.     (knife, dagger, legal technicalities)

Malsurgeon/Apocalyptic death bringer: The white and black magic classes. White magic can heal, yet can cause mutations. Black magic is basically death incarnate with a bit of luck, or it can simply summon a small angry duck that has a hat. (surgery for idiots book and infinity figure dice)

Summoner:  You summon things. That’s really all there is to it. You can also shapeshift, but it’s incredibly risky. (Doesn't wield anything).

Useless old fool: The most powerful class, has the ability to randomly do something that anyone else can do each turn, this can
range from victory to attacking your enemies with a spell that makes them much more powerful. (A walking stick). (False teeth of doom).

Bard: You can play a mean lute solo that can be useful or useless; you can also kill people with your awful poetry and fanfictions. (Lute). (Poems). (Access to every fanfiction ever).

You can use other dungeons and dragons classes, and custom classes if you explain them and they’re not too overpowered.
And since this is a fantasy game, we need more than the standard human race. Here are the races.

Human: Find a mirror, look in it.

Elf: Find a mirror, act like a pansy, somehow point your ears, become a nature loving yet people eating hypocrite and then look in that mirror.

Dwarf: Find a mirror, shrink, witness thousands of awful atrocities, grow lots of facial hair and then look into it.

Jal’kratha: Interdimensional amphibious Turtles that have a long snout and wings made out of titanium. They can hover for a while and are about the size of a regular turtle.

God: This can be as you want it to look; this will be explained in depth very, very shortly.

Orc/goblin/troll/demon: You’re an ugly looking guy with nothing to lose. Expect lots of racism against you.

Small shiny pebble: You are a pebble, unless another character carries you everywhere, then you might as well be dead.

Now there is five god spots available, gods are basically immortal super beings that exist to ruin your day. As a god you can do anything but stuff that will instantly end the campaign. This includes killing heroes and other gods. However, all NPCs are open for murdering *hint hint*. If you’re a god you have a devil of sorts which will do the opposite of your goals. For example if you try to mess with thieves then your devil will make everything double in value.
Here is a small character sheet, use this for your characters.

  Name: Your characters name.
  Species: Your characters species.
  Class: Your characters class.
Abilities: Your characters abilities, I will let you make these, but abilities that are too extreme will not be allowed.
Bio:What your character looks like, what it does, whats its motivations etc.

Rules: If these weren’t here this would be total chaos instead of total chaos fun!
1.   Sessions are every three days, miss one and your character will be on vacation for the duration of that session. Miss two and your character will be on a really long vacation for the duration of that session. Miss three; your space is then open for someone else. That is of course, unless you have a legitimate reason.
2.   Breaking the forum guidelines is an obvious no no.
3.   Don’t do anything that will ruin the campaign/ end it immediately.
4.   Don’t make anything to overpowered that will basically equals an instant win. If it’s slightly overpowered I will counter your overpowered thing, if you continue to do it then I’m simply sending your character to a void of dark oblivion until you can come out. There is no escape.
5.   Have fun, yes, I mean both types of fun.
6.   All of you can’t pick pebbles as races; all but one of you can however.
7.   I swear to god if anyone becomes a Dragon tamer or starts falling in love with Dragons they will have to face the greatest horror known to this role-play. Well, it’s up there in the top hundred greatest horrors.

Everything else will be explained in the first session basically.

Spaces:
Gods:
1.Kleth'Arash (Karl marx).
2.Gnite'kram (Furtuka)
3.Armok (Zrk2)
3.
4.
5.
Heroes: (There can be an infinite amount of these).
1. Alexander Kyrby (Exkirby).
2.BD (Bdthemag).

Well everyone, have fun and good luck.  We will be doing this on the actual thread, since we don’t really need mapmaker for this. Actually we probably do need mapmaker for this, however there'll be a post of what basically went on in the session and any interesting quotes for reference and sigging purposes.

Until i'm experienced with maptools enough to deal with the campaign, we will be doing it using Quakenet (http://webchat.quakenet.org/ ). Search #repercussions and it should work out fine.

Schedule:

The starting session is moved to Friday, the 18th march.

18th(friday)=Game.
(19th)Saturday=No game.
(20th)Sunday=No game.
(21st) Monday= Game.
(22nd) Tuesday=No game.
(23rd) Wednesday=No game.
(24th)Thursday= Game.
(25th)Friday=No game.
(26th)Saturday=No game.
(27th) Sunday= Game.

The schedule will be updated after every two games.

Important notice regarding gods!

There's been some confusion about gods and their exact powers within the game. So here's a list.
1.Gods can't kill other gods and players.
2.Gods who have created NPC's can't use the NPCs to break number one.
3. Gods can however cause suffering and indirect harm, for example. God 1 causes a cave-in, trapping hero 1!
4. Your devil can and will interfere at times.
5. Going onto the mortal realm will cause your devil to appear there, and hinder you greatly.

Between the years when the forgotten beasts roamed and the rise of the dwarf fortresses, in the land of tempests, where great beasts and evil powers lurked, one family was destined to wear the crown of the great karhakian horde upon their heads. I, the lone chronicler of the family of Herogilt will tell you a tale of war, bloodshed and glory.

AGE OF HEROGILT: The saga of glory!

Godan Nestledumbral met in the spacious halls of the keep owned by the Empire of tenderness. In front of him was a table, across it a map was shown, covered in colours, markings, arrows and various other symbols. Around the table sat several intelligent men, some missing eyes, ears, even legs. Each one of them had a concentrated look on their face, as they bickered and argued amongst themselves. They became quiet once they noticed that Godan stood in front of them. His hair was flowing, with a few grey strands, his muscles bulging and his cultist bone amulet that he wore around his neck glistening. The man carried a small knife these days, a far cry from his old glory days of carrying a bronze spearblade. He commanded the armies and men of the Empire of tenderness, although these days things were grim.
"Sadir! what is the news from your scouts?" Barked Godan roughly at the man across the table.
" Things are not good my liege, the cultists still continue to insidiously try to convert our populace. The vikings raid our hamlets often, the sarrids are growing in the east, the wuten hold their lands with great ferocity and the dwarves continue to be a nuisance. Even the elves fight us, the human empires hound us at every turn, bandits are popping up in the country side, fierce beasts and forces of nature lurk in the shadows, along with the unspeakable night horrors!" He replied, stuttering nervously and shouting the last bit.
" By gods men, have you all gone mad? Do you think that we're just going to lie back and let these threats devour us?! Every able person will fight, I want those filthy rats that you call civilisations exterminated!!" Yelled Godan in rage,  smashing his fist on the table, causing a crack to appear.
"That's the problem! Every able arm is either fighting or helping the empire! Although there is one left who doesn't fight for us yet...." Squeaked a small advisor by the name of eliac.
"You mean Ves herogilt? Bah, i'll try to get him, fat chance he'll be of any use though" spat Godan.
Godan returned to a hamlet of a relative, he was constantly moving across the world, yet was staying there for about a week. A figure knocked on the door. Godan yelled for the person to come on in, yet waited cautiously next to the door. He prepared to leap but then noticed who the figure was. It was Ves herogilts. He looked quite like Godan, yet he was a scoundrel.
It was universally agreed that the Herogilt family was one of thieving, skulking, caniving, murdering scum. They would sell weapons to goblins, pay people to provoke beasts to pillage and at one point they were even involved with slave trading. Ves Herogilt wasn't actually a crooked sales person, he was a brutal warrior. At the age of eleven he proved his worth by knocking out, and tying up an entire viking raiding party. He carried a silver scimitar for some reason ( since silver is terrible for swords), along with an iron shield. Although Ves claimed to be a devoted member of The empires of tenderness, he would help out other nations quite often, for a price of course.
"Hello there general Godan, I heard I could be of some help to you." He remarked snidely.
"Cut the crap Ves, how much do you want for serving our empire?" Barked Godan angrily, he disliked Ves, he stood for everything he disliked about the modern day Empire.
" I'll do it for free, providing that if I deal with every problem in the empire, you make me Kharn" replied Ves, clearly amused at Godans anger.
Godan accepted hastily, knowing that Ves would fail miserably, after all the man did carry around a silver scimitar. First off he gave Ves a list of tasks, knowing full well he would perish before everything was solved. And so Ves Herogilts set off to the nearest keep, in search of companions, and so the Herogilt saga began.

DF Modding / Emperornuthulu's mod of whimsy, wonder and flying crocodiles.
« on: December 10, 2010, 06:21:44 pm »
Well, i've been tinkering around the raws a little, reading the modding guide on the wiki and generally just messing about to see what works and what doesn't. I've began a mod, I don't know what this mod could be called (As you can see from the title)and it doesn't have much in it yet but everyone has to start somewhere! After all, dwarf fortress at the start was much less complex than todays dwarf fortress, the same thing probably applies for for every mod. Anyways, onwards with the current features.

Features:

New creatures:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

New civilisations:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

New weapons:

Spearblade: spear and sword in one.
Scythe: We all know what one of these is right?

Now I know some people might say: why didn't you make the thread later on? Well, this is mainly so I can see if i'm going on the right track, for people to give feedback and to see if anything needs changing.

The actual mod will be uploaded soon (When there's more stuff in it) but in order to accomplish anything I need ideas, feedback, suggestions, constructive criticism etc. I've already got five more civilsation ideas in my head, one more mega beast and a few creatures (along with a few weapons) but I don't have any plant ideas or much else. Also, this is your chance to get things inside the mod, and to later brag about how you got the flying crocodiles that shoot ice or something in.

The mod is compatible with the most recent release (31.18) and is currently ascii, it has no graphics set yet. Right now the mods really in the idea making phase, all ideas are welcome, if something is not possible then it's obvious that it won't work, but perhaps then one day those ideas will become possible.

Also, we need a better title, that is all.

First off a little note, this is my first time doing a succession game, so i'll probably screw up when uploading. Also there won't be any pictures for my turn.

Deep in the mountain homes the Nobles were extremely unhappy. They were always unhappy, but this time they were unhappier than usual. For there was a particularily irksome group of dwarves. "They'll be the death of us!" shouted one noble.
" I say we hammer then" shouted another. Yet one noble was cleverer, he banged his fist on the table, then loudly exclaimed: "Why don't we send then into the mountains, the ones full of undead and say we're establishing an outpost. After all, it's not as if they'll survive".
The nobles nodded in agreement, they then got out of their adamantine thrones which menaced with spikes of gold, to plot and plan. The group of dwarves that were troubling them were all well known enough by now. Each of them was a mad scientist, with crazy ideas of defense, monuments, furniture you name it. They all had rather ordinary jobs, yet they were always working on some sort of invention. Their latest one had set several mules on fire and somehow made a turtle stricken with melancholy!
Everyone was generally sick and tired of their crazy !!science!! or their dwarf killing inventions. Their leader soon was kicked out with a wagon and his six equally infuriating companions. To some it would be like a death sentence, yet to this brave band of dwarves it was a triumph of colossal proportions. They would prove everyone wrong, they would go to this "cryptguarded"("Dish mirrors") and create a fortress of !!science!!, with magma!

Okay that was just a short introduction for everything. Basically, you don't play this succession game as ordinary dwarves, you play it as a bunch of insane evil geniuses/mad scientists. You want to make a automatic carp launcher? Go ahead. Do you want to make the main weapon of the military as flaming spears? Try it.

I won't embark yet, since i'll let everyone pick their dwarves. Basically just say what job you want and wha you want your name to be. You might not be dwarfed with the job you want, since I tend to always have a few jobs that I never really change. Although never fear, if you can't be named in the first group then you'll be named in a migrant wave.

 List of players:
1. Me.
2. Dariush.
3. Graebeard.
4. Uggi.
5. Tsarwash
6. Deviled.

There will be a two week time limit, as in if you can't do everything you need to do in two weeks then the next person gets a turn.

A bit of info about Cryptguarded(Dish mirrors now for some reason): It's located on a terrifying mountain (That lacks anything terrifying... for now) bordering a untamed temperate shrubland. The general temperature is warm. There is clay, but nothing else for farming. The stone layers are:Dolomite, Granite, Diorite, Marble, gabbro, schist, granite, slate. We're in contact with everyone and at war with the goblins. I'm using 31.12. There's also a brook called Galenotched. The elevation is quite high.

With out further adieu, strike the earth!
