This may be a little cheesy, but I remember that "small" plants that only took up 1/4 of a tile could be used to fill up an entire tile, which effectively quadruples the vegetation cap of the animals in an exhibit. It doesn't really look good with anything but savanna grass, but it's more space efficient and it helps to balance out happiness for multi-species exhibits once you get to more finicky animals than zebra and gazelle.

That's right, it's extremely helpful with the more difficult animals. If you look closely at the screenshots from before, I've been quietly doing that from time to time to try and boost the animal's exhibit suitability. It's particularly obvious with the mountain lion.

The new savanna

June-September, Year One
Financial difficulties continued to plague the Boatmurdered Zoo over the first six months of its existence. The main path was expanded to add a second food court, while giraffes and a mountain lion joined the zoo's growing collection of wildlife. Unfortunately, an early attempt at adding sable antelopes to the main exhibit went poorly and ultimately failed. The zoo was undeterred by this setback, and soon began to draw up new plans...

I spent the rest of June through August gathering money and preparing for our second savanna exhibit. I also bought a gift shop to go next to Banana Dan's, since we weren't selling any souvenirs yet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also spent $462 to complete the necessary genetic research for woolly mammoths so we can have a full set of elephants someday and added observation areas to the original savanna exhibit per Mightymushroom's suggestion.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

By the beginning of August, I had the area for the new exhibit constructed with elevated paths. I began to gradually build the exhibit, funded mostly by the roughly $3000 a month in donations we're getting.

Along the way, the next two waves of unlocks arrived.

Soon enough, I was able to move the giraffes over to their new embassy. We won both the Silver and Gold plaques for Excellence in Exhibit Design for their new enclosure.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Gold Plaque came with a $15,000 prize. I used the first $5,000 on adding the sable antelopes back into the main savanna exhibit. They fit in easily, once I could prioritize their needs rather than balancing them with the giraffes'.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We've got a bit over $10,000 and rising now. I think we need a new animal keeper if we plan to keep expanding. At three exhibits that aren't particularly close together, we're at about the limit for what our current one can handle on his own. We could hire another regular zookeeper, but if you want to try dinosaurs or marine animals, now might be a good time to hire a scientist or marine specialist since we need to pay a new employee anyway.

Old Mate averts disaster.

Put Ssarscel in as a scientist, let's get some dinosaurs. :)

Is it possible to make ALL of our paths/guest areas raised, keeping the animals in deep pits?

It is possible to do the exact opposite, and keep our animals on pedestals while visitors crawl in alleys beneath them?

While expensive, it would be possible to raise the guests above the animals. We're already in a deep pit, so we don't have much room to make it deeper. We can also put the animals on pedestals, but the guests can't go under them. We can't make actual tunnels like that in this one. You can in Planet Zoo, though.

While we should not do that yet, as it would cost money for something that won’t make much return on investment, I would be interested to see the giraffes put on a pedestal later. After all, they run the government.

Don't worry too much about the one mistake, Smoke Mirrors. Your character was memorable for all the demonology and story writing.

I’m running a game/mechanics test called Fate/Mechanics Test. Feel free to check it out.

+1 t0 the scientist, because having wooly mammoths and dinosaurs will not only be interesting, but also, what better conservation than bringing back what was extinct?

Dinosaurs seem like a popular choice for our next animal. Did you all have a specific dinosaur (or other prehistoric animal) in mind, or should I choose?

I say we get Velociraptor, then after they've been there for a bit and all the zoo patrons in the zoo we should block the door out with a vending machine and let the Velociraptors out.

I don't remember if this would actually kill people or not, as I haven't done that in a long time.

We could get a habitat with Giant Sloths and Macrauchenias.

The Lazarus Exhibits

September-Early January, Year One and Two.
Things looked bright for the Boatmurdered Zoo as it adjusted its savanna animals. An award-winning new enclosure was added as a new home for the giraffes, and sable antelopes returned to the main enclosure. Boatmurdered was quickly becoming a popular fixture of the community, and the stage was set for the zoo to make history.

I finished off September by hiring our newest staff member, Ssarscel the scientist.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Since the requested animals are mammoths, a giant sloth/Macrauchenia exhibit, and Velociraptors, I'll work on them in that order. The mammoth fits Boatmurdered's elephant theme, and the Velociraptor will require both a forest environment and more research. We will also need a $2,000 a month DRT helicopter soon, so we can stop potential escapes.

I also decided to spend a bit of time on our zoo's decorations to slightly boost guest happiness, in order to unlock the Highest Customer Satisfaction award and the attached $25,000 prize.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some awards are useful, but they're all one time only. Here's the full list, if anyone was curious what's left. That list isn't completely accurate, but it's close enough. I don't think you actually need a lion's lane jellyfish for the Excellence in Arctic Construction awards.

Now that we were at $38,000+, I built the mammoth exhibit.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After the mammoths were complete, I immediately began construction on the giant sloth/Macrauchenia exhibit. It took a while, given the cost of the fencing required to contain extremely strong animals.

December arrived as I waited for funds to finish the expensive prehistoric exhibit. With it came our last wave of automatic unlocks.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I feel like calling attention to the fact that we can now place volcanos and lava pits.

As Halloween and Christmas came and went, special guests stopped by for flyovers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

By New Years, I completed the giant sloth/Macrauchenia exhibit and named it South American Past. Good call on combining those two animals, Chaoskl21. I didn't actually think it would work, but they seem to be getting along fine.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Velociraptor pen still isn't done, but I figured enough had changed to post an update.

*Oh yeah, one last thing I forgot to mention. The giraffes had a baby.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ssarscel feeds the first resurrected mammoths.
