Weapon Designs: Commie Crusher '18 (by contact from SPOKANE)

It is a typical blowback-operated open-bolt design, with little in the way of bells and whistles.  The stock can be folded down along the side of the weapon (opposite the bolt) allowing for it to both be stored easily and hip-fired.  It fires at roughly 350 rounds per minute and features fixed sights at 100m.  Accuracy is pretty poor (the barrel is unrifled) and reliability is similarly "meh."  The gun doesn't particularly excel at anything, nor does it have any particularly damning drawbacks.    The only notable flaw is that the magazine release is near the magazine, and the foregrip is the magazine itself.  This can result in the user accidentally bumping the release mid-use.

Cost is $10

The switch to a drum magazine is easy enough, as is the pistol grip to make up for the lack of a place to hold.  The gun now bears a striking resemblence to the Thompson, invented 10 years prior.

Halflight Lance Projector
The Halflight is the embodiment of an individuals gut reaction and instincts overtaking their better judgement and decision-making processes.

It is a shoulder-fired break-action rifle with a one-inch bore firing impact-fuse ammunition.  Testers describe the use of the weapon akin to being struck by lightning - there's an enormous flash and boom, and you may very well find yourself on your back in serious pain.  The rounds exit the barrel with roughly the same force and speed as a run-away freight train...that is to say, not very fast, but very deadly.  The impact fuse relies on the French technology for direct-impact detonation.  A steel hammer on the end of a spindle protrudes from the end of the round and only detonates when hitting a target flat and square; deflections or deaccelerations do not result in detonation.  Moisture or high humidity results in the CP-270 ammunition fuses going bad and reaching prohibitively high rates of failure-to-detonate.  On the other hand, if the round manages to actually hit its target, detonation tends to be a bit over-kill.

The barrel is without rifling and as a result (not to understate things here) the Halflight can be "less-than-accurate".  Luckily, the ball-bearing and explosive composition makes near-misses an acceptable outcome, if the fuse doesn't fail.  The sheer concussive force of firing has been known to stress and weaken the hinge. Although our testers stopped before such a failure could occur, the Halflight's break-action will inevitably fail after a dozen or so rounds have passed through it.  Additionally, there is no extractor for the enormous brass casing, and the brass tends to tightly form-fit the internals and become hard to remove.  An "extractor rod" is provided with the weapon: a broom handle, with which the user can poke the spent round back out.  The Halflight does not come with sights, and the user must simply aim down the barrel's length.

The Halflight's harpoons receive an upgrade!  The fuses on the harpoons now require firing in addition to a sudden change in inertia in order to explode.  The round will still bounce and "blind" the fuses at oblique angles, but around 45 degrees or less the fuse will reliably detonate the barbed charge.  The improved charges require a minor increase in technical expertise and parts, and the cost is eaten by the Halflight.

The two friends cheer, along with their workshop employees as Dowers reads off the one, no, two reply letters declaring they got a contract for both of their firearms! Soon enough the presses get to work on rifle ammo while the lines piece together their revised rifle. Dowers pulls Tommelson off to the side to discuss the matter of the pistol contract, wanting to make sure they impress upon the police force. They are trained better than the average officer no doubt, which is why with this in mind, his revision for the PPF-29 focuses not on the failure to feed issues, but rather the trigger pull. These men are trained professionals so they would surely keep their weapons maintained, and unlike the army, they won't be throwing it down in the middle of a muddy trench. What could make or break the TD-WMP name though... Is a secret service officer having to struggle with the trigger pull and losing his life, or the life of a VIP, over it... Tommelson agrees, and the next revision is planned for the PPF-29, the Contract Holders being informed of the revision to make sure the upmost care is done for their soon-to-be concealed service piece, assuring them it will still arrive on time as planned, and better than the previous design they already agreed to.

The first rifle the two best friends, Tommelson and Dowers, ever designed. The LSR-28 is a rifle meant for mobile troops such as scouts or pathfinders who need to cut down on overall weight without sacrificing too much in the firepower department. It is 7.75lbs with a total length of 130cm , it features a notched-knob style rear sight that could be zeroed for 50m to 500m, with each turn of the zeroing knob being a 25 meter increment allowing for precise and accurate shots. It also comes with a 12rnd capacity internal magazine fed via two 6rnd stipper clips, its increased capacity partially thanks to slightly smaller caliber. TD-MWP went for the lighter caliber to calm both inner and external worries of a large caliber risking catastrophic and dangerous failures of the straight-pull bolt-action system they wish to implement.

(A-Variant: A second pass is taken on the LSR-28 with an eye towards practical use over what looks nice on a blueprint.  A few of the gaps are tightened - particularly around the trigger - to discourage dust from entering, and the internals get some finangling to make them more resilient against dirt if it does enter.  An extra step is added to the bolt manufacturing which involves human testing and fine-tuning; this part is difficult to automate, so a human must oversee each bolt as it's tweaked for its housing.  A small locking lever on the left side can allow the bolt to be removed without a cumbersome screwdriver and pry-bar job from the armory.

Current Bugs and Issues:
1. The magazine spring is prone to wearing out if left full for extended periods of time (especially in warm weather), so it's advised to only fully-load the weapon prior to immediate use. 
2. There's no place for a scope to be mounted, and doing so after-market would involve drilling into the wooden furniture. 
3. The price-point of this rifle reflects the precise, light nature it was designed with, making it quite expensive to field

The newest and most fashionable company in Occassio designs a simple, elegant pistol this season; the PPF-29.  It's a rather small, sleek weapon firing 8mm rounds from a single-stack 10+1 magazine.  The design documents specify that the weapon is a double-action, and as such the barrel is a simple fixed tube with rifling and a secondary gas tube near the muzzle to operate the action.  A half-slide action operates via direct impingement, ejecting the spent brass and scooping the next shell into the chamber.  This notably does not prime the hammer, which is instead done by the double-action trigger.  The downside is that with extended use or poor maintenance the weapon will experience a failure-to-feed, and the slide must be operated manually.  Additionally, the trigger is quite heavy, requiring about fifteen pounds of pressure to cock and release the hammer.

The weapon is quite slim, compact, and perfect for concealed carry.  The magazine will eject smoothly and easily with the button on the side, and a retainer loop can be attached to the grip if desired.  The fixed barrel has positive effects on accuracy (if you were sharp-shooting with the pistol).

The KashKow Kicker is a durable and reliable piece of equipment. Built from milled, chromed steel with wooden furniture, it is somewhat weighty but solid, allowing one to reliably use it as a club, leave it in a muddy puddle three weeks and then still fire without fault. As a smoothbore and simple weapon it is not recommended for long ranged shooting, but with its smooth pump action and 6 shell box magazine it is quick to ready and use.
The KashKow Kicker is pump-action magazine with a box magazine and is quite popular with hate-groups in southern USA.  It features a simple close-bolt pump-action with wide internals, which makes it nearly impossible to jam.  The barrel is chromed (which is quite flashy) and the wooden furniture is hickory - which makes it quite solid as a club.  The double-stack box magazine foregoes the traditional tube-magazine design, and in the interest of simplicity simply detaches with a button on the left side.  There's no lock on the pump action, so it's possible to partially open the chamber by accident.  Luckily this doesn't cause any out-of-battery fires, but it can cause failure to fire.  This doesn't allow for slamfiring since the hammer is cocked by the action - if the round is unseated or not yet seated, then the hammer will "miss" the primer and need to be reset by another pump.

It's not accurate - which is fair, as a shotgun, but this means slug rounds aren't widely considered in the smooth-bore design.  The 12 gauge shell is a nice, hefty, common size, but since the KKK shotgun uses paper casings for the shells moisture is a concern (if found left in a muddy puddle for three weeks, it is recommended to replace whatever ammo was loaded).  The sights are, quite simply, the length of the barrel.  The pump action tends to wobble a bit from side to side since it slides around the single tube, further decreasing accuracy.  The pump is also quite small, and it's possible for errant fingers to touch the chrome barrel (though unless it's been used heavily, this isn't too bad).

It is remarkably cheap and remarkably reliable.

KK Kicker: Huntsman
The tighter tolerances stop the rattle from the pump action, though tighter tolerances aren't the sort of thing that would increase long-range performances.  For that, a longer barrel is required - or a choke for pellet rounds.  For now, the tighter tolerances give the weapon a more satisfying and cleaner action, and we put a simple set of iron sights on the top of the barrel.

Type: Rifle
The KashKow Lancer is a bolt-action, repeating firearm, chambered for 7.65×40mm rounds. It includes an integrated magazine, fed from the top with either individual rounds or 4-round stripper clips. As an Infantry arm, it is intended to be of passable accuracy and stopping power at medium and long range, easy to maintain, easy to use, and most of all, easy to produce.

The only new design of the season, KashKow branches out from shotguns to rifles.  The KashKow Lancer is an extremely traditional bolt-action rifle; stupidly simple, and stupidly cheap.  The gun won't win any awards for accuracy or range, but it'll kill just as well as any other gun and the simple design makes maintenance and use easy.  The safety is a pin which locks the trigger in place (not a very safe design, but very simple) and the sights are a simple knife a "V" pair, requiring the user to gauge bullet drop manually.

The bolt can be a little sticky and requires some force to cycle rounds out of the 4+1 integrated magazine (fed by stripper clips or manual insertion), and if the wooden furniture gets wet accuracy takes a dip as the wood warps.  But other than that, it's a very passable, era-appropriate rifle.

At only $8 per batch, it is also the cheapest rifle produced so far.

Type: Machinegun
The Hammer is a light Machinegun, firing 7.65×40mm rounds. It is a simple to use (and make), low profile weapon (for a fully automatic machinegun anyway), and thus is usable in close confines such as trenches, urban environments and emplaced in vehicles. Whilst not recommended, the low weight means an individual soldier could fire the weapon whilst standing without a brace and have better-than-abysmal accuracy. It comes with a bipod, a spare barrel (as this weapon is air-cooled), and is fed via a fabric belt, which can be carried in an open box that clips to the side of the weapon.

KashKow, a relatively new company, has continued their impressive expansion into varying weapon classes with the new light Machinegun "Hammer."  It fires slightly under-sized rifle cartridges at 7.65x40mm, which increases the rate of fire to an appreciable 500 rounds per minute.  It is low-profile with a distinctive low-dipped barrel and barrel cage, relying on air to cool the weapon during prolonged use.  The cage can unclasp on one side, which allows the barrel to be un-socketed with a lever and withdrawn and replaced.  This is best done sooner rather than later, as once the barrel gets too hot it becomes too snugly fit to be removed from the socket; indeed, attempting to force it out in this state can damage the heated barrel.  The fabric belts are relatively cheap, and the action pushes the round through the canvas loop and into the chamber.  This can result in the occasional jam if the round is slipped too far forward or back in the canvas sleeve, and the bundle of fabric can be a little cumbersome.  The box magazine hooks to the side and carries 200 rounds in a canvas belt.

Technically, one could use this while standing - much in the same way one could drive a car blindfolded.  There is no carry handle, and is often transported by holding the bipod and shoulder brace.  Accuracy is nothing to write home about, but with the rate of fire the Hammer provides it's a bit of an afterthought anyways.  Recoil is pleasant, considering the slightly below-average powder load and typical method of operation.

7.92x55mm Ammunition

Nothing says “reliability” like a revolver – even if it’s a rifle.  The PARVUS PRESERVER ’18 (designed and built by Gerhardt and his boys) is a double-action revolving rifle chambered for seven rounds of 7.92x55mm ammo.  The ’18 (not to be confused with the G18 or M18) is simple to use and unfamiliar with the concept of “jamming”, and even novice shooters find themselves able to use the weapon quickly and easily.  A steel shield is affixed to the stock by a pair of screws.  Testers generally agree this is a poor choice, as the thin sheet provides little to no protection from return fire, increases the users profile, and adds unnecessary weight.  Gerhardt’s insistence on the shield unfortunately means a modest increase in rifle price.

The gap between the cylinder and the barrel provides an escape route for hot gasses and lead splinters, which testers complain about bitterly.  This gap also represents a non-negligible drop in muzzle velocity, but this isn’t a huge issue for most ranges the rifle is accurate at.  The wooden stock does not extend past the cylinder, and after repeated use the barrel can grow too hot to hold as a foregrip.  Seven rounds at 7.92mm means the cylinder is quite large, adding some weight back to the otherwise light-weight rifle.  The gun is without a safety, and the hammer resting above a loaded shell can result in potential misfires if dropped or jostled.  The concept of a swappable cylinder is certainly doable, but with design deadlines drawing near the Preserver uses the more common ejector-rod with fixed cylinder design.

The stencils for the Parvus coat of arms is widely approved during testing (most of the tester are, through sheer coincidence, Parvonians themselves).

The KashKow Kicker is pump-action magazine with a box magazine and is quite popular with hate-groups in southern USA.  It features a simple close-bolt pump-action with wide internals, which makes it nearly impossible to jam.  The barrel is chromed (which is quite flashy) and the wooden furniture is hickory - which makes it quite solid as a club.  The double-stack box magazine foregoes the traditional tube-magazine design, and in the interest of simplicity simply detaches with a button on the left side.  There's no lock on the pump action, so it's possible to partially open the chamber by accident.  Luckily this doesn't cause any out-of-battery fires, but it can cause failure to fire.  This doesn't allow for slamfiring since the hammer is cocked by the action - if the round is unseated or not yet seated, then the hammer will "miss" the primer and need to be reset by another pump.

It's not accurate - which is fair, as a shotgun, but this means slug rounds aren't widely considered in the smooth-bore design.  The 12 gauge shell is a nice, hefty, common size, but since the KKK shotgun uses paper casings for the shells moisture is a concern (if found left in a muddy puddle for three weeks, it is recommended to replace whatever ammo was loaded).  The sights are, quite simply, the length of the barrel.  The pump action tends to wobble a bit from side to side since it slides around the single tube, further decreasing accuracy.  The pump is also quite small, and it's possible for errant fingers to touch the chrome barrel (though unless it's been used heavily, this isn't too bad).

It is remarkably cheap and remarkably reliable.

The tighter tolerances stop the rattle from the pump action, though tighter tolerances aren't the sort of thing that would increase long-range performances.  For that, a longer barrel is required - or a choke for pellet rounds.  For now, the tighter tolerances give the weapon a more satisfying and cleaner action, and we put a simple set of iron sights on the top of the barrel.

The only new design of the season, KashKow branches out from shotguns to rifles.  The KashKow Lancer is an extremely traditional bolt-action rifle; stupidly simple, and stupidly cheap.  The gun won't win any awards for accuracy or range, but it'll kill just as well as any other gun and the simple design makes maintenance and use easy.  The safety is a pin which locks the trigger in place (not a very safe design, but very simple) and the sights are a simple knife a "V" pair, requiring the user to gauge bullet drop manually.

The bolt can be a little sticky and requires some force to cycle rounds out of the 4+1 integrated magazine (fed by stripper clips or manual insertion), and if the wooden furniture gets wet accuracy takes a dip as the wood warps.  But other than that, it's a very passable, era-appropriate rifle.

At only $8 per batch, it is also the cheapest rifle produced so far.

The Hammer is a light Machinegun, firing 7.65×40mm rounds. It is a simple to use (and make), low profile weapon (for a fully automatic machinegun anyway), and thus is usable in close confines such as trenches, urban environments and emplaced in vehicles. Whilst not recommended, the low weight means an individual soldier could fire the weapon whilst standing without a brace and have better-than-abysmal accuracy. It comes with a bipod, a spare barrel (as this weapon is air-cooled), and is fed via a fabric belt, which can be carried in an open box that clips to the side of the weapon.

KashKow, a relatively new company, has continued their impressive expansion into varying weapon classes with the new light Machinegun "Hammer."  It fires slightly under-sized rifle cartridges at 7.65x40mm, which increases the rate of fire to an appreciable 500 rounds per minute.  It is low-profile with a distinctive low-dipped barrel and barrel cage, relying on air to cool the weapon during prolonged use.  The cage can unclasp on one side, which allows the barrel to be un-socketed with a lever and withdrawn and replaced.  This is best done sooner rather than later, as once the barrel gets too hot it becomes too snugly fit to be removed from the socket; indeed, attempting to force it out in this state can damage the heated barrel.  The fabric belts are relatively cheap, and the action pushes the round through the canvas loop and into the chamber.  This can result in the occasional jam if the round is slipped too far forward or back in the canvas sleeve, and the bundle of fabric can be a little cumbersome.  The box magazine hooks to the side and carries 200 rounds in a canvas belt.

Technically, one could use this while standing - much in the same way one could drive a car blindfolded.  There is no carry handle, and is often transported by holding the bipod and shoulder brace.  Accuracy is nothing to write home about, but with the rate of fire the Hammer provides it's a bit of an afterthought anyways.  Recoil is pleasant, considering the slightly below-average powder load and typical method of operation.

7.92x55mm Ammunition

Nothing says “reliability” like a revolver – even if it’s a rifle.  The PARVUS PRESERVER ’18 (designed and built by Gerhardt and his boys) is a double-action revolving rifle chambered for seven rounds of 7.92x55mm ammo.  The ’18 (not to be confused with the G18 or M18) is simple to use and unfamiliar with the concept of “jamming”, and even novice shooters find themselves able to use the weapon quickly and easily.  A steel shield is affixed to the stock by a pair of screws.  Testers generally agree this is a poor choice, as the thin sheet provides little to no protection from return fire, increases the users profile, and adds unnecessary weight.  Gerhardt’s insistence on the shield unfortunately means a modest increase in rifle price.

The gap between the cylinder and the barrel provides an escape route for hot gasses and lead splinters, which testers complain about bitterly.  This gap also represents a non-negligible drop in muzzle velocity, but this isn’t a huge issue for most ranges the rifle is accurate at.  The wooden stock does not extend past the cylinder, and after repeated use the barrel can grow too hot to hold as a foregrip.  Seven rounds at 7.92mm means the cylinder is quite large, adding some weight back to the otherwise light-weight rifle.  The gun is without a safety, and the hammer resting above a loaded shell can result in potential misfires if dropped or jostled.  The concept of a swappable cylinder is certainly doable, but with design deadlines drawing near the Preserver uses the more common ejector-rod with fixed cylinder design.

The stencils for the Parvus coat of arms is widely approved during testing (most of the tester are, through sheer coincidence, Parvonians themselves).

It is a typical blowback-operated open-bolt design, with little in the way of bells and whistles.  The stock can be folded down along the side of the weapon (opposite the bolt) allowing for it to both be stored easily and hip-fired.  It fires at roughly 350 rounds per minute and features fixed sights at 100m.  Accuracy is pretty poor (the barrel is unrifled) and reliability is similarly "meh."  The gun doesn't particularly excel at anything, nor does it have any particularly damning drawbacks.    The only notable flaw is that the magazine release is near the magazine, and the foregrip is the magazine itself.  This can result in the user accidentally bumping the release mid-use.

Halflight Lance Projector
The Halflight is the embodiment of an individuals gut reaction and instincts overtaking their better judgement and decision-making processes.

It is a shoulder-fired break-action rifle with a one-inch bore firing impact-fuse ammunition.  Testers describe the use of the weapon akin to being struck by lightning - there's an enormous flash and boom, and you may very well find yourself on your back in serious pain.  The rounds exit the barrel with roughly the same force and speed as a run-away freight train...that is to say, not very fast, but very deadly.  The impact fuse relies on the French technology for direct-impact detonation.  A steel hammer on the end of a spindle protrudes from the end of the round and only detonates when hitting a target flat and square; deflections or deaccelerations do not result in detonation.  Moisture or high humidity results in the CP-270 ammunition fuses going bad and reaching prohibitively high rates of failure-to-detonate.  On the other hand, if the round manages to actually hit its target, detonation tends to be a bit over-kill.

The barrel is without rifling and as a result (not to understate things here) the Halflight can be "less-than-accurate".  Luckily, the ball-bearing and explosive composition makes near-misses an acceptable outcome, if the fuse doesn't fail.  The sheer concussive force of firing has been known to stress and weaken the hinge. Although our testers stopped before such a failure could occur, the Halflight's break-action will inevitably fail after a dozen or so rounds have passed through it.  Additionally, there is no extractor for the enormous brass casing, and the brass tends to tightly form-fit the internals and become hard to remove.  An "extractor rod" is provided with the weapon: a broom handle, with which the user can poke the spent round back out.  The Halflight does not come with sights, and the user must simply aim down the barrel's length.

Machineguns capable of “cutting through tanks like butter” are frequently referred to as “autocannons”, but the Krupp-Allen family insists their KAM is, in fact, a simple “HMG”.

The 20mm KAM requires a dedicated mount to allow the user to use it effectively, beyond a simple tripod or pintle mount.  Combined with 200 rounds of ammo the KAM can be prohibitively heavy, and the booming report is a legitimate threat to the user’s long-term hearing.  The total volume of fire is limited by the air-cooled barrel, and firing the 200 round belt all at once is ill-advised.  Extended use results in the barrel quickly wearing out.

The KAM uses an innovative API blockback system -  relying heavily on Reinhold Becker’s Advanced Primer Ignition design in his “Becker Type M2 20mm Cannon” from just a few years prior.  This means the bullet is ignited before it is fully seated in the chamber.  The gas then not only arrests the forward momentum of the bolt, but cycles it fully in time for the next round to do the same thing.  This is an incredibly precise and delicate balancing act to pull off, but can result in a light-weight bolt and lower recoil.

The vast majority of the design is spent on implementing the API design, which still isn’t perfect.  Timing variances as the weapon heats up can result in misfires or jams, some of which can actually be damaging to the weapon itself.  The weapon wears out quickly in use, and swapping barrels is not a trivial task.  The weapon tends to jerk at the start of a burst as well at the end, decreasing accuracy.  The gun is long due to the extended chamber, and the ammunition is required to have rebated rims.  With the pressures involved, ammunition cartridges have a significant chance to fail and result in dangerous jams and misfires, but…the 20mm KAM is indeed capable of destroying modern tanks and bringing down aircraft.

Despite Krupp-Allen’s insistence, testers still refer to the weapon as an autocannon rather than an HMG.

This should make the trigger a lighter pull, and allow for slamfiring. As a safety precaution, a pin can be slid into position to block the hammer from moving forward until the trigger is fully released and then depressed again, giving the user the option of mechanically enforced single-fire.

Based on the Huntsman, Revision B adds an integrated full choke to the barrel, tightening the spread of projectiles and improving accuracy at range.
