-- 0.40.21 --

This fixes some large and small problems with yesterday's release.  Save corruption was quite possible, so upgrading is important!  You can still bring your old saves from 0.40.03+ into this new version.

Major bug fixes
(*) Made hauling jobs that chain to other hauling jobs respect job postings, instead of causing crashes and other horror
   (*) Fixed stair/ramp removal

Other bug fixes/tweaks
(*) Made digging look up/down for continuing jobs
(*) Fixed problem with harvest jobs stealing dwarves from each other

-- 0.40.20 --

Here is the job priorities release.  It should work fine with old saves, though existing hauling jobs may need to work themselves out for a bit.  Further job prioritization work can be done when we get through the framework for start scenarios, since we'll better understand how dwarves fit into the fortress at that time.

New stuff
(*) New job selection process where dwarves choose important tasks with more regularity
(*) Very important jobs can remove dwarves from less important jobs
(*) Ability to prioritize a job so that it gets done immediately
(*) Mining, engraving and other designation jobs can now be prioritized numerically
(*) Designation jobs can be placed in a "marker only" mode, marker can be removed later to start work
(*) Mining jobs can be set to automatically follow veins and clusters
(*) Mining designation can be set to only select visible gems or useful stone

Major bug fixes
(*) Fixed crash related to armies failing to take over villages

Other bug fixes/tweaks
(*) Hauling jobs that used to need a held container now allow the dwarf to carry many items without a container
(*) Building jobs can swipe items from hauling jobs if the item is not held
(*) Wall/floor construction and road construction use new skill-free labor settings

Did you figure out what caused that units screen glitch from the .20 thread?

I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that that's what "other horrors" referred to. As far as "why" in DF, no mortal can truly understand such things. Sometimes, not even the Toad.

seriously though I hope the lack of sieges is next on the fixlist

Appears to be marked as fixed. (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8634)

Did a quick search and I couldn't find any extant reports, although a similar problem was fixed in 0.40.07. (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=7739)  Is there a report for this and/or a save that reproduces it?

I guess I was right about bugfixing coming next.  :P

I predict the .40.20 overhaul will still have 2-3 bugs that will rear their heads over the next couple releases, but I think that's the worst of it so we can breath easy now. ;)

Will this fix the problem of medical dwarfs taking a long time to get to their patients?

I specifically addressed that, yeah.  Hopefully it works!  All the medical jobs are high priority now and can swipe dwarves as needed.

A few speculators are pointing to something in the error log that seems to indicate that military camps stop moving and just hang out forever. Could be that ambushes simply aren't making it to the player even though they're trying? I dunno, only Toady can confirm this.

That's good to know, but I didn't see saves in any of the threads.  Toady probably needs a 0.40.21+ save to diagnose the problem.  It would be good to check whether a siege finally arrives after a few years (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8464).

At this late hour I stumble upon the job-priorities update.
Thanks to thee once again, can't wait to test out the new additions.

Picked up 40.21 today...

It seems that I cannot smelt pig iron or steel bars - when a dwarf brings charcoal to the workshop, they seem to "misplace" it, and then return it to the stockpile.  The only way to smelt pig iron is to remove all charcoal stockpiles in the hopes that when they "lose" the charcoal, they just leave it in the workshop for the NEXT smelt pig iron order.  Very frustrating.

Also, my dwarves seem to sporadically ignore certain items... Even when they are not forbidden/dumps.  Caravan's initial food supply was left outside for a very long time - I ended up having to designate them to a garbage dump, and then undumping them finally got them to move them to a food supply pile - "gather refuse from outside" be damned.

Furthermore, at one point, I had some dwarves building an up/down stairway, to penetrate a floor above them.  They seemed to believe they had, for when I asked them to build an up/down stairway on the floor above, they thought they could, and ended up standing wherever they found the building material at.  I found them after months, dehydrated and starving.

I really like some of the new features - especially the trees, I don't want to have to play an older stable version!

The last stable version before 40.21 was 40.19; it's likely the problems you're talking about were all introduced when that change was made. The only changes between these versions are the job priority and hauling overhauls, followed by fixing some bugs caused by it; all other new features can be found here (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/df_40_19_win.zip). The dwarven brain surgery (thought overhaul), trees, etc. are all in the last version.

You aren't missing out on much by being two versions behind if you do choose to be; only some efficiency improvements and bugs.

Nearing the end of 2014, and looking back at the releases, it is almost unbelievable how much content and general improvement was added to the game this year.
And here's yet another great update.

Cheers Toady!
