I think having a large beard should improve a dwarf's chances of being elected to office, and being respected, etc.  But as for actually affecting performance... no, don't think that makes much sense.

Of course it should affect their performance  :D

Seriously, tho.  Toady One was trying to figure out how to add a realistic kind of magic to the game, right? Well what is more magical than a Dwarven beard menacing with spikes of adamantine.  It might be good if they were improvable by a mood.
