Title: Any interest for a 2009 Dwarf Fortress meetup?
Post by: TurnpikeLad on January 12, 2009, 07:50:58 am
It's coming up on a year since the first Bay 12 fan gathering.  For those of you who don't remember this, there's an album of ginormous pictures up on the site here: www.bay12games.com/meetup .  We had dinner with Tarn and his brother at Ivar's on the Seattle waterfront and played an impromptu fortress (in which a bunch of dwarves failed to melt some ice fast enough to not die of thirst.)  I had a pretty good time and I think others did as well.

Anyway, I think we should do something like this again in 2009.  This would probably be in the Seattle area again, but aside from that it's totally up in the air.  Maybe a meal at a different restaurant, or maybe a daytime thing in a park somewhere? I don't know.  The restaurant last time was a bit pricey, so I would try to find something cheaper.

Would any of you be interested in coming if this pans out?  We're probably looking at a date in April or May, like last year.  About 12 people came last time, and we raised a couple hundred dollars for the Adams bros.  (To honor the venerable dwarven tradition, we put the money in a ceramic kitten for Tarn to drop from a great height.)

This would only happen if there were enough interest, so post if you might be able to come!

I live in the UK so anything like this is out for me unless someone wants to wheel in a screen with a camera on top.
That's such a funny image.

Actually a webcast with live chat for the meet up doesn't sound like a half bad idea.

However if Toady will hold a party when the v1.0 DF will be released, I will be there at all costs!  :D

I suggest Dwarfcon '09 be on Valentine's day, and thus we can guarantee that none of us will be otherwise occupied.

Well, actually, I just need 28 hours of travel time up and then back down.

The problem comes when the inevitable games start up, be it cards or DF.
A talking screen with a gangly long haired british dwarf isn't going to be the most dexterous of machines.

I live in Seattle, and I'm too new to the game to have been at the last meetup.  I'd definitely be interested in a meetup in the Seattle area.

I live in Vancouver and will gladly dodge the attack dogs, landmines, helicopters and fire imps of Canadian Customs to get here.

But I have to cast my vote against Valentine's, as my girlfriend might be annoyed.

Last time we had a range of ages from like 17 to 35.  I think about half of us were even old enough to drink.  So don't sweat it, I'd think most people would be glad to have you along.

I can just picture it; starting from southern California and out in dry Nevada, and down from the wastes of Canada, come seemingly normal buses and trains and cars. First all is quiet, then slowly more and more pale, laptop-wielding travelers gather on these vehicles. Bus routes join to trains, cars collect and pass through customs and over highways.

Someone normal walks down the streets of Seattle and passes the train station, when with a sudden roar a mob appears, bursting out the station doors, crying "Hail Armok! Hail Today One! Hail Dwarf Fortress!" And the city of Seattle shall know true fear.

@Zironic: I don't think we're imposing a mandatory age range
@Slinkyfest: What part?  Maybe you could hitch a ride with some other Canadi-ite?
@Portland Dwellers: Depending on whether or not I will have people with me, perhaps I might be able to give you a ride?  It might be awkward, but whatever, we're nerds anyway.  Socializing is ALWAYS awkward.
@Christes: Does that mean you're goin'?

So that's somewhere between 10 and 13 people!  This is going to be awesome!

I think it would work out best for me if it were sometime after April 1st, so I can save up and stuff, but yeah!  I really am excited. :3

Warning - while you were typing 2 new replies have been posted. You may wish to review your post.

You know, it's about the same price to drive as it is to fly.  And then if you take someone else it's cheaper. :P

so yeah i work in downtown Seattle so i can totally go (i didn't go last year cause of work, hopefully that won't be a problem this year). Not only that but it sounds like we got some people flying or driving to meet up. it'll be cool to hangout with some fellow DF brethren.

but really yeah count me in, this was always a good idea and should be supported more.

WRONG! The right answer is "Of course, and I'm getting a second job exclusively for donating to Toady One."

edit: I am driving down from Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA. I will have room for at least 5 extra people in my car, possibly 6. If you need a ride there and back, PM me and maybe we can split gas money (don't worry, the car is vaguely fuel-efficient).

@Zironic: I don't think we're imposing a mandatory age range

I for one think it would be awesome if we had attendees who could span three generations (i.e. someone there old enough to be someone else's grandfather), or better yet, who actually did (i.e. grandparent and grandchild both attending). Any more than that though, and we'd start looking for bugs in the old age code... ;)

I'm certainly up for a meet somewhere in Australia. Maybe at this year's Gencon (http://www.genconoz.com) (which is in Brisbane, end of September) or at a Supanova (http://www.supanova.com.au)? I can make it to the Sydney Supanova, but if I do that, I may not be able to go to Gencon in the same year.

So.  Saturdays in April are the 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th.  Saturdays in May are the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th.  I think we should choose one of these days on which to hold the meet, unless anyone really wants to have it earlier.  If you already know you can't come on one of those days, speak up.

Also, we need to think about what kind of thing we want to do.  Just because we hung out at a seafood restaurant last time doesn't mean we can't go hiking, have a barbecue, or do whatever else this time.  Ideally we'd try to get another fort started, but that's not essential.  All ideas and opinions are welcome.

We've got as much time as we need to hammer out these details.  I'll probably make another thread when we've got a more solid plan, but that doesn't have to be for another month or two.

Any activity is okay but I disprefer pizza/bars and would prefer hiking/interesting restaurant/looming over Toady One's shoulder as he codes.

someone make toady go on a world tour so we can all go meet him.

and umiman, dare i ask, why does the us think you are a terrorist? is it because of that stupid list thingy they have, and you fortuitously share a name with somone the immigration officials deemed as unsavoury?

I had the gall to be born in an Islamic country. It doesn't matter that I'm not Muslim myself, but I won't be able to get a visa unless I'm either:
a) rich
b) famous

or

c) a real terrorist with insider connections

A decade ago, I might have been able to get a visa but not now.

sucks. i hoped it might be something more interesting and dare i say rational on the part of US immigration.

like, someone i used to know was silly enough to carry a bagful of chlorine based fuel for his model rockets on the train in sydney not so long after september 11, when they had sniffer dogs out trained to find such things. he got hit with the new anti terrorism laws and last time i taked to his brother he still had stacks of odd restrictions, like he was allowed to go near the CBD during the G8 summit they had here last year.

Yup. Twice. It costs way too much both in time and money to try again. And besides, after awhile of thinking, there's no reason for me as I am to go to the states anyway. Considering that the American Influence has spread far and wide, it's really unnecessary to go there to experience it, no?

North-central Washington here. The true Apple Capital of the World, the Wenatchee Valley!

I would love to go, most any of those Saturdays should be fine. I heard about the first meet-up at Ivar's (which is truly awesome) about a week after the actual meet. I was sad.

Too bad we likely won't get to feed the seagulls.

Yup. Twice. It costs way too much both in time and money to try again. And besides, after awhile of thinking, there's no reason for me as I am to go to the states anyway. Considering that the American Influence has spread far and wide, it's really unnecessary to go there to experience it, no?

When I (from Austria, the one in the EU, without Kangaroos) visited the US in the late 80s, we couldn't go straight away ... we had to mail in our passports to the Embassy.
The subsequent times I've been there I think i didn't need another visa stamp, but did always have to fill out one of those questionnaires that say "We are assholes, lie to us": Obviously no one is going to admit they're a member of a terror cell, hash smoker or crack addict or whatever while aboard an aircraft. Why the questionnaire, then? To make sure that anyone they do find, they can lock up for some extra time for lying :-)

Now with the biometric crap, and the US constantly asking for passenger data etc, my patience has run out: I'm not travelling to the US anymore.
There's trade fairs and tourism in other countries -- countries that are better at making guests feel welcome instead of treating them like criminals even before they've arrived.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the US at all - i did American Studies at uni, and defend the US whenever idiots criticize it for all the wrong reasons; it's just sad how one despicable act of terrorism was abused as a reason to start two invasions (both of which I half-heartedly supported), torture including an illegal camp in Cuba, spying on the population of not only the US, and generally launch into a kind of "us against the rest of the world" chauvinism.

*erm* OK, sorry for the rant.

Locations ... looks like the one real meeting we all could attend would have to be via TeamSpeak. So far I've seen the US, Indonesia, Australia and WA (Western Oz?) suggested, and would like to add Vienna, Austria, to the list :)

Of course, I'm not sure how many people could actually find North Bend/Snoqualmie unless you really lived around there, even if they are just off I-90.

Has we ever had a serious role call of Europeans who would go to a European meet up? It would be cool if we could organise one over here even if Toady isn't there. (Of course better yet would be to have a donation drive to give him a holiday over here.) So any Europeans who would be interested in it? With a location to be decided depending on where people live and how far they are willing to travel.

I would go to a European meet in England or possibly France/Belgium, but would be a bit iffy about adventuring further from home just yet as I'm only 17.

I would attempt a drop by to Seatle should I ever find myself in the Eastern Americas.

Short of waking up and generally annoying Toady1 and 3Toe when dropping by unannounced,

I'd entertain the idea of an European meetup, circumstances allowing.

Anyplace Brittish*, Belgian, Dutch or German would suit me fine. (*make that English, I don't like the sea enough to go Scott)

French might be allowable, as despite it's distance, they are reputed for their wines.

Scandinavia, though a motherlode of dwarven lore and berserker genes, is far away and booze costs $$$ there, so not really a viable option even though I'd like to visit there at least once in me lifetime. (if only to look up Tobias Murgh!)

I'm not up to date with Danish alcohol tariffs, but they got Legoland!

This is awesome, what are you talking about.

I guess we could treat Toady One out to a really nice dinner and then vote on an easter egg for him to include in the DF code that very night, to be kept secret from the rest of the community until one of us blabs it or some enterprising df player unearths it.

But I am under 18 and I assume most people on the forums are over 18 so it would be really awkward.

Not really, check out the age poll. We have lot of young users also.  :)

Where can I find this age poll at? I do't remember ever seeing it.

As to the meetup I can't make it out to the west coast :(  I live on the east coast of US in Virginia and I can't afford for a plane, bus, or train ticket to take a cross country trip.

Back onto the topic of polls, has there been a location poll done yet? Or some sort of survey to find out where the Dwarven infestation has spread and solidified into Iron? (I doubt we have reach steel levels yet in any one location)
Title: Re: Any interest for a 2009 Dwarf Fortress meetup?

An Atlantic DwarfCon would be good, too. Even if Today wasn't there, we could still meet up.

But having Toady there would probably add another layer to the excitement and fun and other stuff.

But yeah. I don't have much in the way of traveling resources. It would have to be somewhere near northern Alabama for me to attend. Or South Carolina, for my (typically) annual visit...s.

And for a topic where people reveal their ages (but not the poll), I "recommend" this (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=30088).

Erm, I, for one, will be quite hungry after having driven for four hours to get there so I'd like to go to some place where I can exchange my -(Green Pig-Tail Cloth)- for *(Plump Helmet Roast)*. I could go on my own but I don't think I'd be the only person who would want to snag some food.

If it's only 1 or 2 people who have been defeated by the depression and have no bux then we can comp ya, within reason.

As long as we're talking about expensive exhibition locations, the Pacific Science Center has all MANNER of levers to pull and mechanisms to activate... Last time I was there, though, many of the water-powered mechanisms were frozen due to climate. Fortunately, I did not fall in and thus was saved from being encased in ice. I in fact managed to hurl a chunk of ice across a frozen pond, where it skittered across for several dozen tiles.

...Adventurers should be able to break off sharp hunks of ice and throw them at foes. Or imagine an outdoor craftsdwarf shop where one dwarf makes an ice dagger, then uses it to begin the murder mystery of the year 1050...

May works for me!

Here's a list of the dates for the weekends:  Who can go when?  Let's get a list and pick the best!

April:
11th, 12th
18th, 19th
25th, 26th

May:
2nd, 3rd
9th, 10th
16th, 17th
23th, 24th
30th, 31th

I don't drink, but I turn 21 on May 20th, so if we go to any 21+ places, then that date works for me.  Other than that I can go any time on or after April 18th.  Most likely.

There is a Red Robin in Silverdale, which should place the cost for the guys who have to be there at or close enough to US$0 that it won't matter for them.
It is a place to sit down, and has a Jack in the Box and a KFC right nearby according to Google Earth, and looks to be next to a Mall, so should be easy to see.

I am not able to do April 18th. How about May 16th, Silverdale Red Robin?

May works for me!

Here's a list of the dates for the weekends:  Who can go when?  Let's get a list and pick the best!

April:
11th, 12th
18th, 19th
25th, 26th

May:
2nd, 3rd
9th, 10th
16th, 17th
23th, 24th
30th, 31th

I don't drink, but I turn 21 on May 20th, so if we go to any 21+ places, then that date works for me.  Other than that I can go any time on or after April 18th.  Most likely.

Tylui (April 18th+)

All of those dates work for me. Saturdays are preferable to Sundays but both are okay.

When planning location, do we know generally where Toady lives? That should probably factor in.

Edit: That's all the precision I needed. Anyone know the blast radius on a catsplosion?
VVVVV

I got the PM. My main concern is that, having lived in Eastern Washington all my life, and only having had the pleasure of needing to go only to Seattle, I've never taken a State ferry.

Of course, I could drive all the way around up through Tacoma as well, but both ways seem a little 'Eh' to me. I'm a Washingtonian and distrustful of the ferry system. Is this bad?

In any case, if Silverdale is settled upon, I'll do my very best to make it to one of the available dates.

PS: Any type of address would be great, though I mostly don't doubt Google Maps' ability to get me from Wenatchee -> Red Robin, Silverdale.

Edit: Perfectionist

Here's the address for a Red Robin on Silverdale Way, Silverdale, via Google Maps:
10455 Silverdale Way NW, Silverdale, WA 98383 (Red Robin Gourmet Burgers)

Any date in May works for the two of us.

If you guys decide on homely Silverdale, the Red Robin is probably better than Applebee's, since it's always noisy there, and we are noisy.  But I don't know anything about Applebee's, so maybe that is noisy too.  That said, it's not the most exciting place in the universe, Silverdale.  But I guess we'd all make up for that.

As far as the ferry vs. driving around through Tacoma, the ferry is more expensive and you'd have to find your way through downtown Seattle (maybe that's a plus if you don't come through often), but it's probably a little faster if you get your schedule right.  But you can also "come over snoqualmie pass- turn on 18 to I5 - to tacoma- freeway all the way", according to somebody who drives, so it's not a bad run and maybe a comparable time.  Somebody with more experience in the drive can correct.

... But you can also "come over snoqualmie pass- turn on 18 to I5 - to tacoma- freeway all the way", according to somebody who drives, so it's not a bad run and maybe a comparable time.

Amusingly, that was the exact route that Google Maps gave me, and having done several drives to Rochester for family, that does look the best way. Always miss seeing Issaquah that route, though.
Thanks, Toady.

Edit:
Also, Red Robin would probably be better than Applebee's, if they're anything near equivalent to the ones in Wenatchee. Red Robin may have more actual open space, whereas most of the Applebee's I've seen use most of their space for a center (alcohol) bar.

Hey, I leave this for a couple weeks and you guys have already picked out a date and location!  I love this board.

Anyway, May 9 and Red Robin in Silverdale work for me just fine, but I just wonder if we mightn't stay in the Seattle area, close to the train and bus stations, for people who don't have transportation.  Silverdale is a good 45 mins - 1 hour drive out of town, counting ferry travel.  If we end up meeting there, I think we should organize carpools / ferry teams to take people from seattle earlier in the day.

And if anybody knows some good parks or hikes out near there, it might be fun to spend the day on a little excursion before the meetup.

Once we have a confirmed date and location, I'm going to make a new thread.

Yeah, if people were thinking of Silverdale just out of consideration for us, that's not necessary.  Seattle is fine.  It even has a Red Robin or two too, I think, he he he.  It is generally easier to travel to and from Seattle to be sure.

I'm willing to grab a few people and toss them in the trunk of my convertible for transportation across the ferry :)
That is, assuming you all promise to jump out and yell boo if the state patrol guys search the car...

Seriously though, I have no clue about what is in this area, but you all seem to think its a big deal to not go to Silverdale, which seems to be an easy trip to me, looking at coming to it from the south via Tacoma. If it is that big of a production though, maybe we should have a different location. Let's get you guys who live in that area to pick a place that is:
1) Free.
2) Indoorsish.
3) Close to cheap food.
4) A place that isn't going to get us all in trouble for our crazy antics.

There is a Red Robin right by the ferry docks in Seattle (less then a block away on the water front). i'm pretty sure they'd be able to accommodate us. Not to mention there are several other cheap food stands sprinkled about that area of town.

Ug..I'm a lazy ass..I post none at all, enjoy reading the exploits of people way smarter then me in DF and live near portland.  I've been thinking about driving up to the toad hut and dropping off some beer since I'm rather too broke to donate and this would give me an excuse to get up there. ;)
Oh ya..point...I need a point! If anyone desires a lift up there, I'd be more then glad to shove some people in my cherokee. I could fit 3 comfo..well..mostly comfortabley if they aren't to large/tall..4 in a pinch if people don't mind squishing cheeks on the bench seat :D
Though...someone would have to keep me updated via email or something on when and where, I'm rather absent minded and have a tendency to wander off towards shin......

*edit* Snort...chuckle chuckle..3 hour drive..BWAHAHA....er..hrm..I think google maps doesn't take into account that everyone on the interstate drive faster then the speed limit...Needless to say, we don't need no stinkin ferries since I'd be going up through tacoma, and the offer of a ride stretches to anyone somewhat along the I-5 corrider.

Wait..so I should NOT shave then...I'm getting rather beardy..I guess I could not shave till then and eat a lot of carb's in the vain attempt to gain lots of weight. Oh ya, and somebody would have to lop me legs off from the knees down..THEN we can do dorf cos-play! ....wait..does this mean I'd have to skin all the neighborhood cats to make an appropriate *cat skin hood* and other appropriate apparel?

*edit* See..I keep forgetting things..I don't really live IN portland..I live..sorta near it..like...30 miles east on the north side of the gorge....I live at the exit of a giant windtunnel, that may explain my lack of coherent thoughts..stupid wind...
Oh ya, the point again : If you live even somewhat near portland or vancouver I'd be willing to drive to your place and get you and then start heading north. And on a more serious help me kill myself slowly note, if any canadians are coming down, you guys need to contact me..I NEED CANADIAN SMOKES and I'll happily reimburse you for them ;)

*oh look, another edit! I can't tell distances it seems...its more like 20 miles...it just seems longer since I drove through a lot of traffic today...

Is there anybody who needs it to be in Silverdale and not Seattle?  It's really not a problem for us to go to Seattle.  There have been at least two people so far that have said they wouldn't be able to make it to Silverdale.  I don't see why we have to coordinate a trip out into the wasteland here when it seems way easier for people to go to the state hub.

It is harder to follow you home if we have to travel further... Wait, I didn't mean to say that...

Seriously though, Most of the reason I think it is good is because Silverdale is small and therefore easy to give directions about when compared to a bigger place. I don't think anyone actually "needs" it though. Just some of us are coming from further than Seattle, and have no problem picking a few transients up before the extra few miles, as well as taking them back. If it is better to do it in Seattle, I have no complaints, let's just get a firm destination in mind here. Something not too expensive.

I am driving down in a minivan with a total of 7 seats, one of which will be occupied by me and the other probably by my girlfriend. This leaves 5 seats for driving people out to whatever Terrifying embark location you may decide upon.

Also as far as food is concerned I cast my vote for sushi or ethiopian food because burgers are the -cat tallow biscuits- of the real world.

All right, I'm going to make another thread as soon as we decide on a place to eat.  I've done some thinking and it seems like there's only one reasonable choice.

Last time we went to Ivar's, and while the atmosphere was great, the food was mediocre and it cost us an arm and a leg.  We need to go somewhere a bit less expensive, but still somewhere where there's a lot of tables we can pull together and a big space where it doesn't matter if we get a bit.. rowdy.  Plus, a place with really good food is preferred.

I don't want to do ethnic food, even if it's really good like Ethiopian, because there might be someone who doesn't like it and then they're out of luck.  Also, Ethiopian is really messy, everybody eating with their hands and stuff, which might not be good if we end up bringing laptops for fortressing.  So it should be a classic Americana place like Red Robin.  Except for the fact that the Red Robin down on the waterfront has waiters who must be stoned all the time because they forget people's orders and are terrible at cooking burgers.  I read a review by someone who said that their burger was almost uncooked resulting in food poisoning.

So, the only reasonable spot left in Seattle is the Pike Place Brewery.  It's got a big seating area and great food, it's open late, and even though the name might lead you to think that it's mainly about alcoholic drinks let me assure you that they have ample and delicious food and a lot of restaurant seating that's not 21+.  It's a great atmosphere and a fun place to hang out.  Plus it's not that expensive for Seattle:  entrees range from 9 to 15 bucks.

If people are agreed upon this, and agreed about the date May 9th, I'm going to make reservations and make a new thread.

Just about a block up 1st Ave from the Art Museum?

From Google Maps, it seems there may be three parking lots within about 2-3 blocks, though I'm somewhat curious how good parking will be in May, so close to Pike Place Market.

Edit: I'm an idiot. Is there parking below the Viaduct? I can't remember, as my family never drove/parked down there.

Edit2: Pike Place sounds excellent.

Yes, there's parking beneath the Viaduct.  It's all public parking and it probably will fill up on a Saturday.  I used to work at the Pike Place Market, though, and I can give you a map to a parking lot that is almost never full (because people don't know about it.)

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Alaskan+Way+%26+Pine+St,+Seattle,+King,+Washington+98101&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=48.909425,79.101563&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=Fdpy1gIdRy61-A&split=0&ll=47.608948,-122.343444&spn=0.002561,0.004828&z=18

Going north on Alaskan Way (not the viaduct, the surface street) turn right on Pine.  There is a parking lot after half a block that spreads out behind these buildings.  There are almost always some spots there.  There are stairs going up from the lot to Western, and then you can walk a couple blocks south and take stairs up to Union where the brewery is.

There are (last I checked)

I am 100% full support of the Pike place as long as there are no age restrictions for entry. I don't suspect that there will be, since there isn't for the local Brewery/Resteraunt in Colorado Springs, but you never know.

Someone confirm that underage people can get into there (my 1 year old son will be with me.) and make us some reservations! Just be sure we can get drop-ins and drop-outs, so that we can have people who show up show up, and not get in trouble for those that don't.

I confirmed that there was plenty of under-21 seating at the brewery before I made my post.

Since there seems to be no objections, I'm going to make a reservation and a new thread tomorrow.

I didn't want to clutter up the rsvp thread with nonsense.

distance prevents me from going. but I will set aside the date to enjoy plenty of this.

Plump helmets, since when you pour a glass, you can clearly see that it is purple.
