DF Gameplay Questions / Invisible molten rock
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:21:05 am »
I just noticed this in my fort.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It appears to be some sort of leftover rock from when I melted down the stone in my tower cap chamber. I tried getting rid of some of it by building over the spots indicated by the stocks menu. I also tried to atom smash them into oblivion but to no avail.

My last option is to reflood the chamber with magma and hopefully the rocks will cook properly this time. I believe this will work as I melted down far more rocks in my magma chamber, including 1000s of microcline. Overall I disposed of approximately 150000 stones in magma.

Questions: Will my final method work? Does the 15000 molten rocks contribute to lag?

    Introduction

One day, I commented to my friend that my fortress power plant was far too large. He suggested I build a dwarf computer to soak up some of that excess power. I decided to take him up on that challenge, so currently I am drawing up plans for a dwarven computer and I have serious intent to actually construct it.

I have never studied computer science and prior to this project, had no clue how computers actually functioned. Based on what I know now building a dwarven computer is starting to look like it requires even more power generation!

A slight digression into the precedents of dwarven computing. The wiki covers in detail a number of simple logic mechanisms. The page on computing also contains a few links to mechanical marvels such as automatic magma traps, seven segment displays, adders of various sizes and even an attempt to construct a dwarven calculator. What I am attempting is essentially a fully automated calculator. This is the true nature of a computer.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Using Giant Eagles
    « on: June 21, 2009, 07:16:28 am »
I bought some giant eagles off the elves, and I was wondering what is the best way to use them. Currently I have the eagles leashed behind the gates. Will the eagles be more useful if I let them loose or will they ignore the goblins completely.

Since they are fliers too I was worried that if I let them loose I won't be able to retrieve them.

    Hello everyone!

I am working on my no-immigrants mega construction challenge and I have just completed the first major milestone: the completion of my over-sized multi z-level tower cap chamber.

The tower cap chamber is supposed to be irrigated via an overly elaborate sprinkler system I installed in the roof, however it is not performing as expected. Since it was a number of z-levels below the level of the cave river, I was hoping for a massive wall of water rushing down the pipes when I opened the doors. Instead I got a pathetic dribble of water that even an untrained dwarf can outrun.  >:(

I thought this might be because the pipes were empty and the pressure was not transmitting properly through the non full tiles. But when I waited for my system to be full and open a hatch, lines of non-7 tiles started to appear. Obviously the water is merely draining from the surrounding tiles. It takes a long period of time before I get the desired wall of 7s creeping towards the hatch and get a moderate flow of water through.

What gives? I have seen a number of movies where the dwarves get swamped by an impossibly fast wall of water. Do I really have to go so far as to install a series of pumps? I was expecting the pressure to be sufficient.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Multi-level Surface Tree Farm experiment
    « on: June 05, 2009, 09:52:24 am »
I was inspired to attempt this after discovering that placing constructions on a newly forged obsidian floor and then removing them will cause the floor to revert to its original biome. In addition, I learned from the wiki that once the dark subterranean attribute has been removed from a tile, there is no way to replace it, even after pouring obsidian on in. I figured that this means I could produce some light above ground soil tiles above the original soil level in a fertile biome.

The only unknown was what tile an above ground obsidian floor would revert to, as there is no natural tile there to begin with.

I have conducted a small scale test and have proven the method to be successful above the surface level.

As you can see, there is now grass growing on the level above the original ground level!

Directly below, the experiment was complicated by the obsidian stones covering the whole place. However, after some time, grass started appearing as predicted.

Now that I have proven the feasibility of multi-level surface forestry, I think its time to flood the world with magma.  ;D

DF General Discussion / Reclaiming the ocean
    « on: September 01, 2008, 05:14:10 am »
    Hi

I am currently in the process of flooding the ocean with magma in order to make nice harbour walls. However I did not anticipate that magma could flow diagonally off the obsidian shelf and collapse on the seafloor.

This has rather complicated my plans to collapse the whole shelf into the sea. I intended to drop the magma mold in too. It seems the simplest option would be to channel away the obsidian bits, but do you think the miners would be safe from the pressurized water shooting out? The safer but insanely more complicated method would be to dig out the tile above and around the obsidian bit and rig some floors above to collapse and punch through the surrounding floor and isolate the bit. Would collapsing constructions above the shelf cause the whole thing to fall into the sea?

    Thanks

    For your viewing pleasure.
