Title: MountainBreed - Dwarf Town - Sucession Game (Players needed!)
Post by: GPeter on May 22, 2018, 12:09:04 pm
So... as the title suggests, I'm trying to start a Succesion Game, a little different though, we would build a town instead of a fortress, completely outside! The rules will make it clearer. About the projects, with time, I will add more projects according to what you say that would be cool to try to build.

RULES:

#1   - Everything must be built above-ground, with the only exception being MAGMA forges.
#2   - The underground can only be used to mine, MAGMA forges, prison/dungeon/tombs and Basements
#3   - Turns are a week IRL or a year in-game, whichever comes first.
#4   - Anyone can have a named Dwarf, but Overseers get a priority.

Projects:

1- Have a house built for every dwarf/couple/family
2- Have a great wall built around the whole town
3 - To be added

Player Turns:

1- GPeter
2- Kametec_Housen
3- Quasar
4- Comicraider
5- tonnot98
6- Imic
7- Mcsplosion
8- Caesar Josephus
9- deathpunch578
10-

Dwarfs:

1- "GPeter" - Miner
2- "Kametec" - Mason/StoneCrafter
3- "speciesunknown" - Military
4 - "Quasar" - Not Specified
5 - "comicraider" - Weaponsmith
6 - "Imic" - Carpenter or Mason or Architect or All 3
7 - "Mcsplosion" - Any artist (E.G. Engraver)
8 - "Caesar Josephus" - Militia Commander
9 - "snowyscales" - Crazy lunatic who loves whips (Military)

[Reserved for special quotes]

I would be careful... Kametec may seem jovial, but he secretly leads an endless legion of Lawyers.

Sign me up for a turn. I'd like dorfing as a male mason/stonecrafter, please. Also, underground farming is not needed at all, a herbalist or two can get farming started, no need to wait for elves.

I wanted to keep the underground farm, cuz I thought someome might not like it at all, but hell, I'm already building above-ground, no need to befriends with the elves, who likes them anyway? Changing the rules...

Sounds like fun, can I be dorfed as a weaponsmith if and when we get one?

I'd say I'm good to do a turn but I'm currently waiting for a couple of games along with my own at the minute, so I'll wait for a while :P

I'll sign up for a dwarf and a turn. Have always had a soft spot for aboveground forts.

If I might be so bold as to suggest an embark site: the coldest heavily forested area you can find with all neighbours.

Also, embark with at least 1 militia dwarf and get them armed asap. Year 1 werebeast attacks can be nasty.

About the embark, I will set up a vote before starting the game to make a decision, but your ideia will be on the list!

My schedule just opened up if you still want players. :)
I always build above-ground towns for my forts to house non-dwarf visitors and my military (prevents cave adaptation mid-fight) so I fancy building a decent tavern and some dwarven high-rises. :p

I'm considering the idea of starting the game today, what do you guys think? If yes, then I will start It tonight (I still have work and college, sorry  :-\ )

I'd say go ahead. I think that 4 people are enough end if you want to have 5, the fifth one has 4 weeks to join us. And if we get something interesting going on, someone will show up for sure.

That's exactly what I had in mind, maybe if we get an awesome history going on like 3 megabeasts attacking at once (God, please, do not let that happen, not on my turn at least), people might want to join.

Tomorrow is holiday here in Brazil, so I'll have some free time (No work and college, how lovely!), all things considered, I should have a report of what I did tomorrow.

So, I checked the votes, and beside a mountain won, let me make a world.

Here's the settings I used to generate the world
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And Here's where we settling in
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And finally, here's the supplies
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Let the story begin:

15Th of Granite
We finally arrived! Goddamit, I couldn't stand this travelling anymore! So, we're here by orders of the queen herself, she claimed that the dwarves being "hidden" in the underground would leave them too vulnerable so we "needed" an above-ground safe and strong claim, thus was born "MountainBreed". The name is quite ironic, as we're not delving into the mountain as usual...
So, upon arrival, this is what I can see:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I immediately order some trees to be cut down and some plants gathered, we're gonna need those seeds ASAP. As everyone got to work, I remembered I dont know everyone in here yet, so I talked to everyone to find out what exactly are we working with:

Myself, "GPeter" - Just an ordinary Miner
"speciesunknown" - An Axedwarf who retired from battles, but did not retire his axe, he cut trees now, and does some casual brewing
"Kametec" - A Mason/Stonecrafter, someone who actually seems to know what he's doing at least, he'll be useful...
"comicraider" - A Blacksmith specialized in weapons forging
"Catten Monommorul" - A furnace operator who also does some Mason/Stonecrafting
"Dodok Stonducim" - Just an ordinary farmer/herbalist
"Dastot Loloketest" - Another farmer, but also a cook and herbalist

Anyway, even though we're not actually living in the underground (Still digesting that), we'll still use it a lot, especcially for mining, so I already got a little hallway dug out, wich will lead into the mines
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now that some trees have already fallen, I ordered a LongHouse built, we will build the closest to the mountain for now, maybe we grow outward later
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN HERE? I TOLD YOU GUYS TO BUILD THIS CARPENTER SHOP LIKE A YEAR AGO! WHY ISN'T IT READY YET?

Sir, we don't have any carpenters!

Oh... Fine, I'll do it myself then! Carpentry shouldn't be that difficult anyway...

Some days have passed, and people are complaining of the lack of beds, I told you guys I am a newbie in carpentry, dont rush me unless you want your bed to break itself apart during your sleep, It's not my fault that the queen did not send us a professional carpenter... anyway, we have built a dormitory, it just need some last touches on the roof, and a floor. AND, I already have plans of building a Tavern to store food, make booze and eat/drink it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Between so many thoughts about the future of breedmountain, my greatest fear, one that brings chills down my spine just from hearing it came back to my mind... Lack of Booze. Luckily, we've got some plants which can be brewed, now I just gotta setup that Tavern... GUYS, WE'VE GOT WORK TO DO!

Within a record time, we put a Tavern up, and on Second floor, the Stills and Kitchens will work, and the Third floor will be the storage.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It is 7Th of Hematite right now, and IRL it's 01:26 AM (Brazil time), I'm gonna sleep right now, and later I'll finish my turn.

I'd advise against having a tavern keeper and performers. They are a little overzealous in their duty and keep the drinks coming. To the point dwarfs start dying to alcohol poisoning.

Indeed, farming above-ground will be quite a challenge, but we can have other source of food, like animals, bit anyway, more challenging  ;)

Just let him be happy, c'mon... But, let's establish our alcohol industry first, booze will be infinite here.
I can has be dorfing as a tavern keeper?

I'll se about that.

I'm having a feeling that this place Is going to be too peaceful... I dont like that

Depending how close to the mountains we are there may be a farmable area on the outskirts of the map, I'll search when I take over :)

20Th of Hematite

Dammit, we're short on dwarfpower here, the work simply does not get itself done!

... I'll just shut up by now

We've got 6 extra dwarves, one of them being a Great Carpenter, thank god! There's also 2 farmers, one of them also being a doctor (Degel Allasrith), 2 Fisherdwarves (Useless) and 1 Great Potash Maker... Useless

The farmers will continue the way they arrived, I designated one of the Fisherdwarves as a our BookKeeper/Manager/Broker while the other will become a carpenter (Finally I can stop making barrels). The carpenter obviously will remain the same and the Potash Maker is now a furnace operator.

The BMB Office will be on the Tavern for now, we will build a real office for him later.

Now that I'm just a miner once again, I can finally start to do some digging, we're gonna need stone for blocks and also metals, we've got plenty of coal but no metal to forge... I just started digging and already found interesting stuff!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now that we have an ore vein for gold and copper, I designated a furnace structure to be built below the dormitory (Just a house with room for four smelters and a stockpile on the second floor).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm also building a Blacksmith Shop to house our forges. Comicraider!

Yes sir?

I know you like forging swords and axes, but I'll need you to forge some golden toys right now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With all this golden toys industry going on, I just remembered we dont have a Depot yet, so I'm gonna build one. AND the dumbass here ordered the blacksmith shop to be build a couple tiles smaller than what I wanted... deconstructing is such a pain in the ass...

I gave priority to the Depot, It's early Autumm already, so the next caravan should be close. In a few days, that's the result:

Even though the blacksmith shop is not ready yet, a forge has already been built and "comicraider" has been giving us lots of golden crafts to the point that he's a now a Metalsmith instead of a Weaponsmith, dont worry buddy, soon, you'll be forging Sword, Axes and Bolts nonstop.

Aaaand, they're here, exactly 4 days after the Depot got ready
(https://i.imgur.com/dnEzPGq.png?1)

For the next Overseer, I ordered more drinks and Iron/Bronze bars.

This is what they asked in return:

Those few gold crafts that comic made have valued over 16800 Dwarfbucks, but the caravan didnt have much useful, All I bought was some extra booze, LOTS of food, from meat to fish and cheese, AND I bought everything I could that was made out of Steel, for melting purposes.

For the next Overseer of this place, we're making stocks for the buildings on the floor above them, except for this stockpile above the dormitory, that's the one I'm using to store everything I bought that doesn't have a dedicated stockpile yet.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Unfortunately, all the steel bars we could get was mere 5 bars...

I've been having problems with the carrot seeds, we always run out of them. So I created a manager job "Brew drink from plant" that will repeat every time the Booze amount goes under 300, that should help keeping a steady supply of Carrot seeds, As the plump helmets that came with embark are almost gone, only 5 left.

Again... Not gonna complain tough, I kinda need the extra dwarfpower. 11 migrants, 10 dwarves and 1 dwarf larvae. I'll make good use of them.

With so many gold crafts that left with caravan, people will start to know that there's gold in "BreedMountain", I'm quite worried about this, we don't exactly have a defense... Actually all we have to defend ourselves is a retired Axedwarf with no armor whastoever! I'm getting at least 3 of the new migrants to the militia. species will train them, our new Axe Squad.

I also got someone to be a dedicated hauler, two more miners, an extra Mason/Stonecrafter, an Armorer/Blacksmith/Metalcrafter a cook and a brewer.

Say hello to out first military squad, The Blockaded Coalitions:

Before they begin training, they need equipment. The steel we've got is enough for the three battle axes, but that's about it, so I'm mining some copper for the rest of the equipment...

Barracks built (Still needs a floor), everyone got an axe, a shield, a breastplate and a leggings, now train! Btw, the barracks are first walls we built from blocks:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Winter is here, and I getting sick of being the leader of this place, I was talking to my friend Kamentec, and he agreed in taking over the leadership, but only once winter leaves... God only knows why... Anyway, there shouldn't be much going on this winter though...

I noticed the amount of animals we have
(https://i.imgur.com/ekguQLd.png?1)

So I set up a Butcher shop under the Kitchen to slaughter them, the Dogs will be trained as War dogs
(https://i.imgur.com/eLZpycL.png?1)

I also noticed that the last Bituminous Coal we brought on embark has been burned down, any extra coke we might want to use, will have to be burned ou mined, but we still have 309 coke availabe, so the next Overseer will have enough to think on a solution.

"Anyway, there shouldn't be much going on this winter though..."

Man... Kids these days... I'll just shut up already...

We didn't have a Craftsdwarf Shop (Kids on strange moods ALWAYS go for them), So I had to assemble one outside the main work area where our carpenters and masons are working

Please don't give me anything useless...

Surprisingly enough, It's not completely useless... Once we get nobles, this can help improve the quality of their rooms, Thanks kid.

Thus, A new year is born, and I can't be the leader of this place for not a single extra day, I'm passing the leadership to Kamentec...

Quick one. I know we're reserving underground stuff for tombs and prisons (and maybe food storage, I've heard it stops it rotting as fast or something), what's the policy on basements? I was thinking of setting up a smithy that keeps the coal downstairs for convenience until we set up magma pumps.

No worries :3 I plan on working on a couple of fleshed-out buildings and some high-rise housing anyhow, having a booze cellar for taverns would come in quite handy as well xD I build above-ground housing quite a bit for visitors and non-dwarf saves, so this stuff's second nature to me

This is becoming interesting, and I got an Idea, Build WatchTowers and put marksdwarves on them, would help with early defense, but the forging materials though...

Also, If anyone find a specific quote, notable, say It so I can put It on the reserved space for those, and also, If you want to star a poll, PM me with the options and everything, and I'll create it.

GPeter, you may recognize from Simple Fortress, or stoneless/woodless fortress. I too would like a turn and a dorfing. The militia commander if possible. Also no one be surprised if I start to "expand our policy." After all, there is no such thing as too much Fun or too big! I'm also thinking we have the wall also contain the corpses of those who built it, and then make the wall a temple.

Mugs and Goblets also are nice.

"You hear about that above ground dwarf town?"
"Yeah."
"Well I went there recently. It's so strange, and they have several outrageous monuments. Anyways, I got you a souvenir."
"Wow, a mug..."
This is Drinkholder, the Holder of Drinks, a slade mug. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. On it is an image of Urist McCheesemaker. The dwarf is making cheese. The mug menaces with slade spikes.

I can offer you a miner, mason or a macedwarf sheriff and hamerer. I have kept miners and stoneworkers separate, so they both can work at the same time. Take your pick.

Put me on the turn list. I will regret this.
Also, Dorf me. Imic, a male acrchitect or mason or carpenter. Preferably all three.
I have also masons separate from carpenters, for the same reason. Out of the two, which would you prefer? We have a legendary carpenter. It's a female though. Now that I think about it, the other carpenter is also female, so a mason it is, I guess.

I forgot to mention, If i get dorfed, I wanna be a male artist of some sort, maybe an engraver, named "Billy"
I can offer you a miner/engraver, or a craftsdwarf. Also a metalcrafter. Which one would you prefer?

Spring has just came to an end. Not much happened so far. Only a minor disturbance when a goblin with a big bag came. It didn't look it's packed with presents, so I send bunch of axedwarfs after him.
Spoiler: It was quick (click to show/hide)

I had a nice corpse pit built for him.

I couldn't decide what we need the most. I decided to go with two projects for the moment. We seem to have a goblin neighbours, so a wall will surely come in handy. And some housing for us wouldn't hurt either. I decided to start on the northern border. It is nice flat area. Apart from a hill and a bunch of trees. Nothing our woodcutters and miners cannot handle, I'm sure.
Spoiler: Untamed wilds (click to show/hide)

Migrants have arrived:
Zuglar Uzolkokeb, great beekeeper
Obok Stibmerfikod, great bone carver
Rovod Sefoltekkud, great fishery worker dabbling stonecrafter
Tosid Oslanalath, great clothier
Zefon Siknugkadol, great miner
Fatch Bothonlogem, novice farmer
Kogan Athelnosing, great animal trainer
Kaemurl, mercenary, competent macedwarf
Solon Regnazom, great presser
Oddom Zasitidek, great stonecrafter
Bomrek Tunomkivish, great bookbinder
Atis Kedzaneg, great woodcrafter

I can use them. It is going to get busy around here.

Dwarfs have taken the task with enthusiasm.
Spoiler: removing hill (click to show/hide)

With the hill and trees gone, we can start building hour new homes. We'll need materials and lots of them. From now on, there are only 5 jobs allowed in this fortress. Each and every dwarf will be one of: miner, carpenter, mason, hauler, construction worker. No exceptions. When we run out of wood, I'll add a woodcutter to the mix. There are lots of work to be done and time is short. So I want to see a flawless workflow of raw wood and granite hauled to the workshops, there lots of blocks cut and then taken to the construction. Come on, we can do it!
Spoiler: Construction (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Hard at work inside (click to show/hide)

Season change caught us hard at work. It is now summer and we're building like there's no tomorrow.

Yeah, about that legion... I kind of want that one back, it was my favorite. I suggest you send it back before I send the other legions  8)

Also could we get a full map of the fortress so we can start pre-planning where us future overseer's are going to put our projects? it would be nice because I'm thinking we have different districts to put like a market place and the park and the library and the temple to the god of blood.

Temple to Armok is easy. Build over the magma sea and have a pyramid in the middle with a hole leading alllllll the way to the surface (or top of map) to drop prisoners down. :3 Then they splatter all over the pyramid and coat it in blood, just like he wants.

No no no you got it all wrong! That's too easy, simple and obvious! You're supposed to build a pyramid that reaches max z level up and covers the town. As a bonus feature you pump magma above the town to the outskirts to be dropped. This way your dwarfs can worship and protect the dwarven caravan.

It's time for another quarterly update. Autumn just came. Summer was quite uneventful, apart from churning out blocks, only four noteworthy events occurred.

(1) Human caravan came. I was actually thinking whether I should mention it. They had some cloth, thread, food and booze, we had some spare golden crafts. Now we have some cloth, thread, food and booze and they have some golden crafts.

(2) I've been thinking about setting up justice system. With 44.10 around, I've seen tantrums being thrown quite often and I am vaguely remembering reading that sheriff/guards can cut tantrum spirals short. I'd like to verify it and so I want to see if I can manage to get prison standing before spring rolls around. As for the justice person, I'm thinking about Kaemurl, competent macedwarf. We have access to ores needed to smelt bronze, so bronze armor it is. But since he is going to hold special position, I'd like his equipment to be special as well. I've noticed a few (2 exactly) bismuthinite boulders in our stock and it occured to me: I'll have him wield bismuth bronze armor and a silver mace! I needed more bismuthinite, but I've read on wiki it is found in small clusters in granite. We are literally sitting on granite, so I've decided to do some exploratory mining:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And soon it was found!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In orthoclase? So much for small clusters in granite...

(3) One of our masons made an artifact quern. I wish she made a millstone instead, I consider them superior to querns.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At least I now have a legendary mason available. That means more blocks more quickly. No complaints about that.

(4) And finally, our outpost has been promoted and we now have to deal with a privilege of having a mayor.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'll leave town hall for someone else to build. With justice system in place we better pay attention to mandates though. I have a feeling they are going to be demands of:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Buckets. Could be worse. By the way, have you ever sold a bucket?

And total progress halfway through my turn is like this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My goals are to:

After seeing my progress until now I've began to wonder if I can make it in time. I wanted to pass the save with my projects complete and made all efforts to build as quickly as possible. I'm having blocks made on large scale and the production can keep up with designations. But the building itself is the bottleneck. Every dwarf not busy hauling wood or stone or making blocks is helping with the constructions, but they cannot keep up. Let's see how much progress I can make during autumn and I'll decide what to do when winter arrives.

I vote Kaemurl gets a nice tall tower with a hole down the middle leading to the temple to Armok where he can toss prisoners down to soak the walls with blood! Ahahahahahaha! Also, if you ever get an artifact hammer (gold or platinum) it needs to be given to him and he needs his profession renamed to Thor. Then if he winds up dead, continue giving the hammer to the successors and do the same. :D let's see how many 'generations' of people wear the badge armor and weild the weapon.

Autumn update is here!

Frantic work continues. We have guard station build with only roof to be done, captain of the guard appointed and a few prison cells set up. In order to do that I allowed production of bronze.

I've also decided it is time to make furniture. I've tallied what we're going to need and had work orders set up to make sure our carpenter, Meng, actually delivers everything I need.

I traded with dwarven caravan for food, so I don't have to deal with farming, I don't have spare dwarfs for that.

Here is the progress on furniture:
Spoiler: Remaining furniture (click to show/hide)

And the buildings:
Spoiler: Autumn progress (click to show/hide)

I've decided to go with underground cells with rough floors. Prisoners are going to make do with a masterwork bed and masterwork chain only. Also, some of the living rooms are already furnished and first tenants are moving in already.

Looks like I'll finish one house and finishing touches on the other one will remain for next person in line to do.

The final update:

Luckily, there were no complications during winter too. I have finished one of the houses. Now, with the exception of 3 babies, each dwarf has his/her own place to live. There were enough married couples willing to share a room so they all could fit in 48 apartments. (66 out of 69 dwarfs accommodated)

Guardhouse is finished too. Some cells need furnishing though, but all materials are queued for production.

The unfinished house has all materials ordered too. But it may take a while, production of all 765 wooden blocks needed may last a little.

I've been building the walls during the winter. Designate it and let the dwarfs to build it piece by piece. Simple enough, what can go wrong?
Spoiler: Dwarfs can get stuck (click to show/hide)
In retrospect, I should have designated the floor only and wait for it to be finished before designating fortifications. Lesson for next time.
Now that it has come to this, I decided to add scaffolding. If left to their own devices, the dwarfs would finish the construction eventually, but it would be too late for the dwarfs stuck on ramparts. Scaffolding will add total workload for the dwarfs and increase total time needed to finish the construction, but it will allow to save the stuck dwarfs before they die of thirst.

And it worked. Some of the scaffolding is constructed and the thirsty, hungry dwarfs were able to get down. Now here is the total progress:
Spoiler: Total progress (click to show/hide)

There is training area for Fortress guard (The Caves of Righteousness) designated in the guardhouse. Also, I like to build stuff from blocks!
Spoiler: Details (click to show/hide)
Not that there is anyone training anywhere at the moment, I've had all dwarfs help with the construction. But military dwarfs have their equipment (or have they? When I made an armour suit for Kaemurl, the axedwarfs were all over it like locusts), so they can respond to any threats by assigning a kill order to the squad. They are on the slower side however, so it may be necessary to add a burrow and issue a civilian alert to avoid necessary casualties until the military strolls in range.

Spoiler: Downtown (click to show/hide)
The meeting hall is with both drink and prepared food stockpiles. I've tried assigning it to a tavern, but the dwarfs socialized and not worked, so I removed the tavern and left it as plain meeting area. I suspended preparation of food, because the food stockpile got so full that new roasts were left in kitchen to rot. Drink is being brewed as barrels are emptied.

And finally, list of our dwarfs:
Spoiler: Dwarf list (click to show/hide)

As for the walls, I planned to make the walls roofed and towers open air, but I didn't make it in time. Next turn is Ququasar's I think, so it is your call. ;) You have plenty of building materials at your disposal:

That is someone else. Kaemurl migrated as competent macedwarf. He was in middle of some mercenary work when headed to our fort, he kept his occupation as mercenary. I then made him a silver mace, had him equip officer's bismuth bronze armour (normal bronze for ordinary militia) and appointed him as captain of the guard and hammerer. He then gave birth to a baby and I learned he is actually she.

I'll probably end up lining some of the shorter ditches with walls to increase their height. I kind of like the idea of continually building up the city walls until they're all the same height as northern ones, then completely filling up the space between them with buildings atop buildings 'Anor Londo' style. But that will have to be left to future overseers.

I'm focusing primarily on our militia for defense this turn: the ditches are simply a secondary measure to help slow down and break up goblin sieges. I'm aiming to leave Mountainbreed with a full time army of 50 armed and armoured wardwarves (10 mace, 10 hammer, 10 sword, 10 spear and 10 axe).

'Billy', an untrained unarmoured recruit, vas the first on the scene due to being able to run faster without armour. He held the line, as a brave dvarf should, trying desperately to keep the beast in position until the axedvarves who actually had axes could arrive. I think he even did some damage: I svear I heard the beasts right neck crack.

Billy's luck doesn't hold out and the Ettin pummels the poor dvarf for a bit. For a moment I feel a brush of fear, tempered only by IRON SELF-DISCIPLINE.

But at last the axedvarves Kubuk, Cerol and Astesh arrive, and the fight turns in their favor. Armed vit steel, the beast has little chance against them: the three dvarves hack away at it's body and heads for hours until it finally bleeds out.

Astesh gets the kill. So ends Mab Penasushsath the Pregnancy of Pantomiming, in BLOOD, PAIN UND DEATH!

Ze elves arrived. I traded them a pathetic gold scepter and ring in exchange for fruit und a few animals. Nothing combat vorthy: a bull, a barn owl, a goose, a goat, an echidna und a bushtit.

Hopefully zese tree lovers never find out vhat ve do in ze vood burning vorkshop in order to make refined gold. Zey vould lose. their. shit.

In ze interests of sustainability und also not starving to death, I am allowing a few specialist farm dvarves to vork on establishing a farming und kitchen complex. I do not consider zis nearly as import as training und constructing defenses, but I am feeling generous in light of our victory over the ettin. I vill graciously allow our dvarves to eat something fresher than trade food, even though they are still PATHETIC HYBRID CHILDREN OV VEASEL UND VORM.

Vell, zis is embarassing for all Mountainbreed. Our only vater source, a tiny stagnant pool, vas in the vay of our magnificent trenches. So... ve destroyed it.

Vell, every mistake is an opportunity. Ve vill find the caverns!

[2 minutes later]

Ve found the caverns! Und they're dry. Zat is unfortunate.

Oh vell. Ve vill vall the place off und continue downvards. At least this gives me something to do vith Eral's stupid pet kitten. Keep me up all night vith your bloody mewling, vould you? THIS IS VOT YOU GET! I hope a giant cave spider eats you, you PITIFULLY ADORABLE LUMP!!!

Zat's more like it!

Unfortunately, ve pierced the cavern at vhat appears to be it's highest point, far far above the underground lake. It vill take some doing to reach the vater. But vith that said, mining is vun of the few non-military labors I am still allowing zese fools to do, so it should be qvite possible to establish vater access for the occasional hospital use.

Solon, you are a PATHETIC LOUSE, und not deserving of the title "dvarf"! You should be proud, not horrified! Zis is vhat Mountainbreed has wrought. Death, upon our enemies! Blood, gore, and- oh... oh, it does vhiff a bit, doesn't it? Urgh. Perhaps Kametec shouldn't haf built the refuse dump in the middle of town?

Oh vell. Regardless, you should be more like Kaemurl. Look at this magnificent specimen of dvarven martial prowess!

I'm not convinced ze martial trance und acrobatics vere necessary against a bunch of dogs, but it vas certainly impressive to vatch! Bravo Kaemurl on zis magificent display of overkill!

In fact, I am inspired! Our veapons stand ready: ve vill all join the hunt!

I dunno, you throw one tiny adorable pet kitten to the giant cave spiders and everyone loses all sense of perspective.

Pet's die eventually anyway: better to get it over and done with during peacetime so it doesn't amplify a crisis later. Rip it off fast, like a bandaid. At least this way the kitten gets to be useful and reveal some of the upper caverns for us.

Ve got another 20 or so dvarves. Nobody of particular skills. Fortress population now numbers 92.

For your reference: a capybara (https://www.rainforest-alliance.org/sites/default/files/styles/750w_585h/public/2016-09/capybara.jpg?itok=_4AI2DG6).

Urgh, vill you relax Meng? It's just a big rodent, no big deal. Stop yelling.

All zis noise over a giant rat. Fine, then! Spear sqvad, go kill the capybara.

Vait, vot?

VOT?!

I... I haf no vords. Two months of hard training vit the spear, und this is vot ve get? Armed dvarfs dying to a HAMSTER? VOT?!

SHUT UP MENG, YOU PITEOUS SLOBBERING FOOL.

OOC: Giant. Fucking. Hamsters. (Breadbowlites get the reference)

Und now ve need a hospital for the injured dvarves. Und vater! How's are those vellvorks coming along?

Not anyvhere near done. Unfortunate! Oh vell, ve haf few options but to allow the construction to continue und hope nobody dies of thirst before the vell is complete.

I svear, these miners haf no clue vot they are doing. I'm only designating one level for channelling at a time, but they keep collapsing sections.

Oh vell. At least nobody has been seriously injured ye-

OH.

Zefon, Asmel, you're ze closest! Do something about the bleeding! Get her to the hospital, now! Move i-

Too late. Ve lost her.

Zat's... zat's qvite a blow. GPeter vas the founding dvarf of Mountainbreed, und she died on my vatch. I've been building a graveyard, but...

... no. No, a simple grave might be enough for a dwarf who dies to a mere hamster, but it is not nearly enough for a brave founding dvarf! I vill take responsibility for her death, und ve vill build her a standalone granite mausoleum. In fact, mausoleums for all the founders!

But the biggest vun vill be for GPeter.

A graveyard is a glorious monument to the fate of us all, und it vill not do to skimp, even in the name of military prowess. You may all take time from your training to assist in it's construction.

New dwarves:

Spoiler: "Ocra Troper" (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: "Caesar Josephus" (click to show/hide)

GPeter: It's unlikely anyone will be piercing hell for many years yet. I don't think it's possible to rename forgotten beasts, and I've only heard that DFHack can rename animals: never actually done it. I can give you a new dwarf, though.

Another dvarf dead to cave in.

I don't know vot vent wrong vit the designations in that area, but clearly something did. I have cancelled them all for now. Ve vill refocus our efforts vit safety in mind.

Another capybara herd arrived. I vos vaiting for them zis time, und our axedvarves vere qvite ready to slaughter the HORRIBLE, EVIL LITTLE BEASTS.

A dvarf by the name of Olon has silently seized a metalsmiths forge. He is an adequate armoursmith, und has procured bronze for his mastervork, zo I am qvietly optimistic.

The humans arrived. Ve traded them a pile of useless gold toys for poor quality iron und bronze tools that ve can melt down, plus a pile of raw food. Can never haf too much food.

Olon, you are a useless shitbag. I hope you get eaten by a capybara.

Ve solved the mystery of the missing corpses. GPeters corpse vas found on the ground just outside the barracks. I guess some DISGUSTING FOOL decided he'd had enough hauling corpses for vun day und left GPeter to rot.

Luckily, Tosid vas already on it by the time I found it.

GPeter is now interred for good in her gold tomb. Ve vill mourn her, und alvays remember the important things, like her love of backpacks.

Summer creeps avay vit it's tail betveen it's legs in ze face of Autumn's chill breeze, und ve continue vork. Ze militia are vonce again training hard, und are now vorthy ov being called something vaguely resembling a militia. At ze very least, they are no longer all recruits.

I vonder how the cavekitten did exploring the caverns?

Still, alive, huh? Und now a cavecat. Und the caverns are almost entirely explored, too.

You know vot? You've earned it, little vun. You may come back up.

Progress continues slowly. Vit half the fortress training for battle, construction vork is slow, but steady. Ve vill get there eventually.

The outpost liason is here, vit an offer.

I considered it for a vhile and eventually came to the conclusion that the dvarf most skilled in martial prowess should lead us from the front. Congratulations, Baron Speciesunknown!

Zere vas some other papervork. I requested steel und the ores vith vitch to make steel. In return the mountainhomes requested toys und plants. PATHETIC.

I traded the dwarven caravan some meltable steel and iron knicknacks, plus a variety of raw food, in exchange for the useless bronze crown Olon made. Zey told me it vas "a great treasure" and that they respected this was "no mere trade". Funny how it's a priceless artifact now that the trade is complete. Didn't seem that vay vhen we were spending hours haggling about it's vorth und throwing in a bit of free food on the side to finalize the deal.

"Here's your glorious crown, vould you like fries vit that?"

The caravan is leaving along the highway we've been working on.

https://imgur.com/L5GKvf5.png (https://imgur.com/L5GKvf5.png)

Ah, excellent! A test of our mettle. All sqvads, advance!

The sword sqvad vill be the first on the scene, but probably not in time to save Deler, a brewer, and Adil, a fishery worker. Ve vill haf to see how fast they can run.

Luckily, our dvarves are not the only vun's at the gate. A few stragglers from the dvarven caravan are still in the area. A female macedvarf by the name of Kadol bravely turns to defend our fleeing citizens. Vith luck, she vill be able to hold the beast until ve can arrive.

Battle is joined! Kadol shows off her expertise with the mace, und it is immediately clear that our dvarves still haf much to learn. Even our most skilled Macedvarf, Kaemurl, could not have matched her blow for blow. Not by a long shot.

In spite of her skill, her veapon is bronze: a poor material for a mace. Incapable of defeating the beast vith it, she nonetheless doles out a swift and terrifying series of hits, receiving only slight bruises in return. She is certainly formidable, but the Minotaur is many times her size: one solid hit is all it would take to kill her. Thankfully, she can no doubt hear the shouts of the sword sqvad approaching and knows she does not have to hold out forever.

The frontrunner, a female swordsdwarf who is also named Kadol arrives to help back up Mercenary Kadol.

The minotaur promptly grabs swordsdwarf Kadol by the sock and lifts her over his head, presumably to use as a blunt force veapon against Mercenary Kadol. This proves to be an error, as our Kadol uses the extra height to sink her sword up to the hilt into the beasts throat. The minotaur is unfazed, und casually informs everyone that he has improved his fighting.

Kadol takes advantage of the momentary confusion to crush the beasts hand, causing it to collapse in pain.

All the other dwarves fall on the beast in a flurry of slashing and stabbing, and it is Imic who swoops at the last moment to claim the final blow, separating the beast's head from it's shoulders.

Vith the beast dead, all is vell. Ve say goodbye to the caravan and Deler profusely thanks the mercenary Kadol Bluntnet for saving his life. She says she vos just doing her job, but nonetheless leaves here a hero of Mountainbreed.

It's finally time to ensure our vater supply vonce and for all. Zefon does the honours.

Run, Zefon, you PITEOUS PIG CHILD!

In moments, the reservoir fills. All that is left is to pull the lever to close the floor bars, und ve vill have safe access to the clean, deep vaters.

Alrighty then, time to finish up this turn. First things first, meet our new dwarves:

Snowyscales. We don't have a whip on site, so I've armed you with a flail for now and put you in charge of an any-weapon squad. Is completely convinced of his own worthlessness.

Spoiler: Snowyscales (click to show/hide)

Bearskie. Skilled Hammerdwarf. I pulled you from the hammer-squad and put you in charge of a second hammer-squad. Considers working hard to be abject idiocy.

Spoiler: Bearskie (click to show/hide)

Big Cheese. Our legendary mason, creator of Shagogakith "The Static Wrath", a granite quern. Personally would just as soon have nature and the great outdoors burned to ashes and converted into a great mining pit.

Spoiler: Big Cheese (click to show/hide)

Deler's near fatal run in vith the minotaur convinced me that ve need to further expand the military. If Kadol had not been there, our PATHETIC, UNDISCIPLINED SWORDDVARVES vould not haf made it in time, und our best brewer vould haf been gored to death, or votever it is minotaurs do to their victims.

Some might say a militia of 80 in a fortress of 109 vos overkill. Those people are PITIFUL FOOLS. Zere is no such thing as overkill vhen it comes to the military.

Deler (not Brewer Deler, another Deler) started screaming madly about a clothiers shop in the middle of the dining hall. Ve built him von, and he claimed it and immediately started screaming madly about silk cloth.

Vell, that's not too difficult. Ve vill open the caverns briefly. Nobody hear knows how to veave, but ve can learn.

Deler claims the silk cloth and continues screaming madly vhile ve collect more thread. Vonce he has two units, construction on his masterpiece begins.

It's exactly as much a pile of VORTHLESS SPIDERDUNG as expected.

The remainder of the year passed uneventfully. Ve vorked on ze southern border, constructing granite und orthoclase valls atop the cliffs ve had dug to protect ourselves.

Ve also built a bronze drawbridge, und installed the lever for it in the new dining hall.

Speaking of vich, Mountainbreed is now self-sustaining. Ze food production area vos a GLORIOUS SUCCESS.

But not nearly as glorious as my true legacy as overseer! SIXTY DISCIPLINED DVARVES, trained in the NOBLE ARTS OF BLOODSHED. Zey vill fight und die upon the battlefield vit no remorse, nor regret for the lives they must take in defense of their home! They vill instill FEAR UND PAIN, in Mountainbreeds enemies! A glorious army, bringing death und destruction forevermore!

Spring is here, und I must now turn over the overseership to some cowardly, veak, pathetic dvarf. Vit hope, the armies of Mountainbreed vill sustain themselves vitout my iron vill guiding them to glory. Ve can but hope!

Save file is here:

http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13830

A few out of character notes:

* This character came out a lot more sane than I was expecting her to. I was planning to completely cripple construction/production work and draft, arm and armour every dwarf of the fortress, but there was too much still to do. Regardless, I did manage to get weapons into the hands of 80 dwarves, 50-60 of them are trained and 20-30 are decently armoured, so not a bad result.

* Both entrances are way too close to the border. A siege or titan spawning at either one would be inside the walls before we realized what had happened.

* Our only brewer is barely proficient, so while we haven't actually had any drinks shortages yet, we're not in a comfortable position booze-wise. Got plenty of food, though.

* The place is horrendously inefficient. That's mostly my fault: I turned all our haulers into recruits and as a result had to delete a bunch of stockpile links to get anything done.

Sweet mother of Armok, I did not realise how big this town was xD this may be more than I can handle. I'll keep a copy of the save handy in case I can't hack it, but here's a rough intro;

Journal of Thikut "comicraider" Egastkubuk

1st of Granite, 253
I'm so confused.

One minute I'm enjoying some sweet potato wine with the boys in a taven outside Oatmeetings, then after I wake up from the blackout I'm apparently in a "dwarven town" called Mountainbreed. I asked around with the locals to find out where exactly I am and they tell me not only is this town run by a civilization called The Scoured Hames, which I have NEVER heard of, but they're never heard of The Banner of Souls, or the land of Entar as a whole.

In my drunken stupor I've seemingly ended up somewhere no mortal dwarf from Entar has ever been. Have I somehow swam to another continent in the south? Moved between worlds? Are the charcoal smoke and constant fiendish dust clouds finally chipping away at my fragile sanity?
The locals say I've been here since the town's founding three years ago in 250, and have been here since then. IT WAS MID-SUMMER 1071 A MINUTE AGO. Was it a dream? Am I even real? Could this all be a simulation on some bizarre contraption overseen by a sweaty drunken twenty-something who has forgotten what women are?

I'm so alone.

Nonetheless, After I awoke I had been informed by the overseer that I had been randomly selected to run the town for a year. Strange guy, quite pale. Where did these bite marks on my neck come from? Eh, whatever it was is screwed, I have- I'm getting off track.
Looking around the town I found great walls in varying stages of completion, so I should probably see to it that those get finished. As much as I like masonry, we did things a little different in The Banner of Souls. We had small surface towns outside the main fortress made of wood to flip off the Elves, which we would live in while we dug out the fortress itself then used to house visitors to the tavern. Since we all HAVE to live above ground for...reasons, I've decided to keep up my Soulite tradition in a different way.

The walls will be finished, and wooden housing will be built outside to house non-dwarf guests and non-essential residents, to save on stone and provide a buffer in the case of sieges. Also there's a big stone pit thingy with a dead goblin and ettin in it... 'kay.

The outpost liaison keeps lookin' at me funny. I could barely tolerate Urdim Edanrith back in Entar, and we grew up together. Watch yourself, pal.

...wait...SINCE WHEN WAS I A WOMAN?!

The new overseer has declared an intention to vaste perfectly good unburned-charcoal on construction und cheap housing, rather than using it to smelt veapons und armour. Such vaste... und only now do I recognise her. It is the very same DISGUSTING, PITEOUS FOOL I caught smelting veaponmetal into doors (https://imgur.com/J6QqWx7.png) vhen I first arrived! My legacy is to be tarnished by this... this... FURNITURE MAKER! Vhy must the fates torment me so?!

I am grateful that I turned most of our vood into charcoal for the forges before the end of my term. The damage this PATHETIC CREATURE can do has been limited by my GLORIOUS FORESIGHT und OVERVHELMING PARANOIA.

I guessed by your nickname that you were a girl... and also, I didn't pay attention to the sex of the dwarf when dorfing you :/

No worries, I literally never clock on to dwarf genders xD

In my own succession game (Usnuspstrasp/Sunshield) I just dorfed myself randomly and didn't realise they were female until I was randomly made queen xD

I've taken to referring to myself as Quing of the Dwarves in that thread, hoping whoever currently has the save will rename the title xD

Speaking of turns, for whatever reason the save is lagging like all hell for me, so I'm gonna have to pass on my turn :( Shame, I was massively looking forward to it but I haven't had the FPS drop so low since I ran a 300+ population Mountainhome with an unnecessarily large dwarven reactor and all the caverns exposed. I don't wanna be that guy and use fastdwarf (even if I had DFHack for 44.10) so I'm pretty much stuck unless I end up taking a friggin month.

Looks like the tale of the deadpan hungover metalsmith from another world will have to wait until I can sort my CPU out, which may be a while. :'(

BTW, sorry about the apparent abbandon of this post, I just got a new job so my time is really limited right now, but I'll be back into posting and hopefully someone will grab the save by now.

It's acctually my first job, so this makes it even greater! But anyway, even though I don't have much time during the week, I will sort of "revive" this fort. I'm PM'ing Imic to know about his turn.

I think Imic hasn't got PC access for the time being, he just had to put his turn off on my fort as well.

First Update, covering the first half of month 1

Date: 1/1/253

My Pilgrimage to the Settlement of Breedmountain has come to an end, and I have found the humble village!. Its walls are incomplete, but when they are finished, This fortress will truly be the mightiest of any above-ground sites I've ever seen in my travels.
https://imgur.com/a/Oza66jp (https://imgur.com/a/Oza66jp)
What's more, I see great potential for the spiritual growth of the great Arban the Disemboweled Tenacity! The Great Canine of the mountains may have another wonderful site of worship by the end of this year, if I focus this group of dwarves to do more than just "Honor the dead." How can you expect to honor them without creating a single Idol to the wonderful creature who helped to create all the life in this wonderful mountain range?
https://imgur.com/a/VA3WH1J (https://imgur.com/a/VA3WH1J)
It seems many people within this town agree with me that there should be some sort of place of worship in this town, and upon my arrival, I found the perfect place!
https://imgur.com/a/oM1ckGO (https://imgur.com/a/oM1ckGO)
This plot of empty land is just perfect for a temple! I'm already commencing construction plans and hope to have a functional place of worship in the following months.

Date:1/8/253
Wow, some of these buildings are disastrously incomplete. The second apartment block has 2 nearly functional rooms, yet nobody's living in them, and the rest of the building still doesn't have a floor! Oh well, I can't Fault the Dwarves, Their previous overseer left abruptly without any warning shortly before I arrived. I did happen to pass someone muttering to themselves about armies and iron fists, and upon closer inspection, the military here are very dedicated fighters. I suspect they will soon make great paladins for Arban soon enough!

On the subject of the temple, in the past week work has been slow. I'm considering reorganizing the military and assigning lower-level recruits as builders/workers on this monument to one of the greatest beings to grace this fine world with its overwhelming presence.

1/16/253
Some elves have arrived. I hope this trade can go smoothly, so I've made sure to include nothing even remotely related to wood in the goods we're offering.
https://imgur.com/a/rOHCvQD (https://imgur.com/a/rOHCvQD)

Hmm? That's odd, a child just passed by with an odd look in his eye.

1/18/253
The child I mentioned earlier seems to have become possessed. Could it be Arban's will guiding him? Or something far worse? Only time will tell. I must speak with the elves about trading, no time to tend to the strange forces affecting our young.

I'll take up a turn if you'll have me. Never really tried an aboveground 'town' of this scale. I'd be honored to give it a go!
