So, I was thinking about a fortress on a save with a buttload of duplicate RAW files, plus some mods.
Those of you who understand the above sentence can skip this paragraph. If you don't, let it be said simply that the code does not like it when there are copies of the RAW files- files with the easily-modified information on creatures, civilizations and items. While it isn't fully understood, duplicating the raw files (usually by accident when modding) has been know to cause cave crocodiles to live in houses, civilizations of elephants to form, camels to wear clothes, fluffy wamblers to pull wagons, wizards to exist, and demons to get raped by elves, to name a few.
Most of the chaos from raw duplicates is apparent in adventure mode, so we need good cause to believe that this will do much to a fortress- adventure LPs just aren't the same.
Anyway, who's interested, and do you think this will work? Whether it might be a community, succession or what is up in the air.
-
It might work.
I've had lots of fun with raw dupes.
But be careful, because one time, I ended up with the stone being rainbow coloured and completely unusable. Couldn't even mine the stuff.
Also, if blank leather or cloth appears frequently on the embark screen, at least half of your dwarves (or whatever else they glitched out to being) to die from the leather boiling in a cloud of frozen evil.
-
Sounds like fun! I'm in!
EDIT:
I've experience a few duplicate raws in my time (especially what with forgetting to clear out my copy of dwarf fortress I have for testing), so I know you can get some rather weird effects.
I've seen humans with dragon fire breath, cave fish silk, elves with adamantine, more ' leather' than you can shake a stick at, stuff like that. So yes, weird stuff WILL happen, and it will be awesome. I propose you, say, make a few different copies of creature.txt files.
-
Sounds like Fun, rather. That's the pull, of course.
Dunno if I'm in per-se, but I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this, and might join in a few turns down the road.
-
Definitely favoriting this to watch it for updates. Interesting idea, and nobody knows what to expect!
-
I say, start it off as a community. Get an embark, grab some items, then post what you get for your initial 7 here for people to choose. This will also let you know if it's even possible to start with.
-
Okay. I'll set up an unnavigable labyrinth of duplicated and new files. Tomorrow or Friday, probably.
-
I would totally join this. +1 If you have us be a different race by accident.

I've seen a purring maggot fortress and a wizard fortress. =3
-
This sounds cool.
I'm definitely going to be watchign this topic.
I MIGHT hop in for a turn later.
I second the start as a community fort.
If it is succession right away, please make it a community fort too anyway.
My dwarf:
Capitan Coder, an engineer. If you're going to be giving him skills, the starting seven, give him mechanic 5, architect 2, mason 1, metalsmith 1.
I would prefer male, but female is ok.
-
I just tried duplicating creatures in 5 - 6 different files.
The civs was replaced by ratmen, gremlins, lizardmen and other such-suchs. This was 40d.
The megabeasts included blizzardmen and mermen, although subsequent tests indicates megabeasts are the first things to go wrong.
I couldn't check out further info in legends mode, and attempting to embark in fortress mode both resulted in crashes.
Editing the RAWs to a point of balance between fuck-uppery and not making the game crash are going to be hard.
EDIT: Yes, when speaking about duplicating RAWs fuck-uppery is a verb.
-
I'll claim a whatever if it's a community fort. Whatever race you get, I'd like a Clothesmaker. Preferably one with Weaving, but if you don't roll that way it's cool. Name him/her/it/green glass chair Cal, and give the character some amusing quirk that will be hilariously annoying to its coworkers.
-
If it's a community fort, I'd like an engraver/mason (or glassmaker if there's sand)
-
Spartan, carpenter/woodcutter/axedwarf.
Or axeman. Or axecarp. Or axecat. Or-
-
Growerfoo, I guess. The second skill is up to you.
-
Opening it up with an adventure mode OOC prologue, just to see the situation. I jumbled together some of my own mods I had lying around and plenty of duplicates. I'll get to starting a fort within the post. Hopefully.
I started off trying to play as a goblin (the options were goblins, kobolds, and frogmen). Miner was available as a skill, but I couldn't put any skill points in- apparently the binding for that has changed to "82Shift+UpShift+-Alt+Down". What the hell is UpShift? Whatever. Unfortunately forgoing skills I find that my name is to Muthkat Doormuscle. Whatever. I enter and am greeted by this:

Not... totally sure what happened. Looks like someone was wearing the fabled boiling leather. Perhaps I'll pick over their melted corpse once it cools off. Moments later, they've frozen to death. Well, I guess I won't have to worry about them cooling off. 8)

I meet another goblin who says absolutely nothing of interest, except that the town is called Whipcrowns (making it, I think, probably built by goblins) and that somebody killed a tentacle demon. Which means there are tentacle demons on the loose. An Axeman (goblin) praises minerals, which is probably also noteworthy.

Sweet looooooot! I decide not to take the fireman silk robe. Things made of materials that should never exist scare me. I also find a camel leather cap.

Well, looks like my earlier assumption was wrong- it's a dwarven fortress. Everything points to the goblins using a dwarf civ file. Well, except that they're called <profession>men. Which might mean that they're human-civved goblins who conquered a dwarven fort? I head in search of the monarch, or whatever.
I see they have some highly skilled staff.
Tentacle demon worshippers. Their rites must be... interesting. Someone also kills a hoary marmot while I'm down there. I quickly grow bored and head for a shop to cash in my ill-gotten two-humped camel leather goods for a weapon. ...then I remember that dwarven fortresses have no shops. Moving on!
The game crashes when I try to go into a town, unfortunately.
Right now it crashes on embark, so I think I'll have to tone down to dupage. More on this later.
-
Waiting with all due anticipation.
-
I believe the crashing would likely be because of vermin switching about into non-vermin, especially fish. I'd suggest trying to remove as many vermin as possible, leaving just purring maggots (Since taking them out causes embark crashes as well).
-
Bump because I fixed the images. I'll see if I can't get to embarking pretty soon here.
-
2nd Adventure mode attempt (no pictures this time):
It let me put points into miner, this time, but I didn't spawn with any items appertaining to my skills (miner, armor user and shield user). I went with a different goblin civ who still used the dwarven language, but started in a town set of dark towers. The priest at the temple was a snakeman (which I think is pretty cool). Oh, and yes, a ton of people died from boiling leather when I entered. I got killed by a pack of wolves before I could see a town (which I suspect to consists of kobolds). On my next try I spawned in a dwarven fortress being overrun by batmen and antmen (and I had a steel sword and shield), but the game froze when I accidentally tried to 'move carefully'. Upon trying AGAIN I was stuck in a mountain range with no towns. So whatever, I'm embarking. Update then.
-
lol, boiling leather armor. ::)
I may actually try this type of game...

We've embarked at a pretty good site. It's fairly warm here, we have stone, magma, trees, and a pit. Oh, how I love pits! Maybe we can find some trolls.
Let's go over out party: We've embarked with seven strong goblins from the Great Tower, hand selected by his holy darkness, the Demon King. First we've got got Captain Monomnakas, who calls himself a "coder". I'm not totally sure what that entails... but he seems pretty good at building mechanical and structural things, although he's no artist. he keeps rambling about bugs (I haven't even seen any bugs the entire journey!) and 'fuck-uppery', which I'm quite sure is not a verb. We also have a clothesmaker/weaver named Kenbo. Kenbo, unfortunately, is rather eccentric and has a habit of making clothes that... umm... appease the tentacle queen, to put it nicely. We have an glassmaker who goes by Killer, which I think is silly, but whatever. There's no sand back at the tower, so it's lucky we managed to find a glassmaker at all. Spartan takes the traditional cossack role of woodcutter and axe-fighter, as well as carpenter. Sysice, our farmer, has a green thumb. But that's because he's a goblin, mostly. My role is as a miner, and engraver. Lastly is Eddo, who can operate furnaces but mostly is here as a trader.
AND THEN IT CRASHED.

Did you remove all vermin RAW's aside from purring maggots?
The crashing might be vermin getting changed to creatures, or a lack of purring maggots in the world.
-
Wow...That's a problem :(
I think you should regen, and hope you end up with a glitched, non crash world.

I removed the [vermin] related tags, very thoroughly, from all the vermin creatures (purring maggots excluded).

Giving you creatures without body definitions? That's probably even worse. You should take them out entirely.

This thread makes me feel good. I've never tried RAW Duping before, would it work if I just copy-pasted the default raws, giving me a (1) copy of everything?

The first line of each file needs to have the file's name on it, so you'll need to make that minor change to each dup'd file. Otherwise, that sounds like it should work.
-
I think the game even starts acting weird if you only have a duplicate entry, not necessarily a duplicate file. I'm not totally sure about this though.
-
Hmm, all that happens when I try running adventure mode is that the game crashes.
-
A single duplicate entry can and will cause massive glitching, and keeping vermin in at all can do worse, such as the crashing (Although Legends are always interesting reads). Completely delete ALL vermin except for purring maggots, and there should be a MUCH higher chance of it working.
-
And, for safety's sake, give purring maggots a body shape. Because they're vermin, they won't use it, but if they become NOT vermin, they'll have something to be!
-
Hurrah for purring maggots.

Will that work? Or will they glich out like crazy when they stay vermin?
"Purring Maggot is throwing a tantrum."

I've never tried it and there's a good chance it could make them freak out.
Do it.

Seriously? A 1 year necro for that comment?

This will be epic.
Do want in. Draft me as any axedwarf and make me the broker as well (if you don't have one already). If not then make me a baron ASAP.

Read the post dates, this died over a year ago.
Then again, it is a neat idea for a succession or community fort. You would just need to achieve the right balance between hilariously messed up and playable. Hmm....
