Title: Engraving Game
Post by: Impending Doom on January 04, 2008, 09:13:00 pm
Thought this would be fun. Invent an engraving using DF terms describing another game. the next person to post guesses the answer. The one who gets it right makes up a new engraving, and so on.

Alrighty:

On the wall is an engraving of a human and humans in Microline. the human is raising a crowbar. the humans are rejoicing.

Half Life 2 obviously.

On the wall is an engraving of a human and conservative swine in Basalt. The human is selling brownies. The conservative swine are laughing.

Hrmmm... That's a tough one.

Is it a Bay 12 Game?

EDIT: Ooh, I know, Liberal Crime Squad?

EDIT EDIT: This is an engraving of an orc and rats in dolomite. the rats are striking down the orc.

That could really be anything...

Warcraft, Warhammer fantasy, Elder scrolls...  Even dwarf fortress.

Behold the mighty shotgun approach.  Make several assumptions and wait for the secret-holder to tell you which one is right.

If any of those are correct, try this one:

On the wall is an engraving of a gladiator and an elf.  The elf is following the gladiator incessantly.
Engravings don't have stone types.

Elder Scrolls was correct. Morrowind, specifically. Damn rats...

That sounds like Gauntlet to me, but I'm really not certain...

How about:

On the wall is an engraving of a human.  The human is wearing steel armor.  The human is carrying a giant steel corkscrew.

Hmm.   Only thing that comes to mind is Fallout, but I don't remember any giant corkscrews there.

Engraved on the wall is a dwarf and some Murderous Elephants and a demon and a wolf and a berserk groundhog and a demon-carp and a felsite thong. The elephants, demon, wolf, groundhog and demon-carp are laughing. The dwarf is making a plaintive gesture and wearing the thong.

That would be DF i guess.

Engraved on the wall is a ring and a spartan. The spartan is standing on the ring.

Slightly obscure but i think most of us know the game anyway.

This one's really obscure...

Engraved on the floor is an image of a shapeshifter, a human and an amulet. The shapeshifter is raising the amulet. The human is dying.

Here's a slightly simpler one:
Engraved on the wall is a well-crafted image of a gargoyle's head and a bolt. The bolt is sprouting flowers. The gargoyle's head is pierced with the bolt.

Engraved on the wall is a masterful image of a Monkeylord and a Harbinger.  The Harbinger is melting.  The Monkeylord is laughing.

I have never played it myself but my friend insists it's Supreme Commander. That right?

In case he's right..heres an easy one.
This is a masterful image of a skarrj and a leviathan tank. The skarrj is running away from the leviathan.

Title: Re: Engraving Game
Post by: Kagus on January 05, 2008, 03:44:00 pm
Yeah, that's Supreme Commander.  I only played the demo, but I can relate.

And that's Unreal Tournament.  I can't be buggered to find out which one it is, but I don't know if they had vehicles in the first one.

And that Bioshock reference was a bit misleading...  Big Daddies aren't really human anymore.

On the wall is an engraving of a human and a tank.  The human is wearing steel armor.  The human is easing the tank's pain.

Nope, Boullion. It's Dragonsphere, an obscure but really solid and profound adventure game from 1995.

The second one is from the beginning of Ultima 6 - Iolo shoots a bolt into the gargoyle that's about to sacrifice the Avatar on an altar.

Warhammer 40K (either Final Liberation or Dawn of War), Techpriest.

Here's a new one:
Engraved on the wall is an exquisitely carved engraving of a human, a demon and a idol. The demon is placing the human's eye on the idol.

Here's a pair:

Engraved on the wall is a masterfully designed image of a human, a concrete pillar, and a striped yellow sportscar. The sportscar is smashing into the pillar. The human is flying out through the sportscar's windshield.

Engraved on the wall is a well-designed picture of a Malok general, a Human ranger, a red button, and red buttons. The Malok general is striking a menacing pose. The Human ranger is making a submissive gesture. The red button is broken. The red buttons are a month overdue.

Any racing game with ragdolls... my biggest guess is DF... no wait erm, flatout?

Engraved on the wall is a masterfully renditioned image of an iron block in space surrounded by other menacing spikes of iron. The block is floating. In this block there are a human and humans. The human is screaming. The humans are scared. Outside the spikes of iron are on fire. In the spikes of iron there are humans. These humans arn't humans.

Specifically, Flatout 2. It was the only game with ragdolls AND crashable sportscars. On PC, at any rate.

And yours is....  uh...  no, I don't think I have that one in my collection. Something in the "flaming iron spikes with not-humans" reminds me of Quake, but that's the most I can guess.

Somebody guess my other one.  ;)

Sean, you've completely stumped me.  But I might just be able to get back at you...

On the wall is an engraving of a god, a demon, a wizard, and a rabbitowldeer.  The god is pleading.  The demon is laughing.  The wizard is talking with the rabbitowldeer.

Here's a hint that will not help at all:  The god is voiced by Tim Curry.

First one's Monkey Island, the second one...

The only thing I can think of would be Age of Mythology.  The wonder that Loki-worshiping Norsemen could build was a giant ship surrounded by stones, but that's a bit obscure, so that's probably not it.

I got one none shall figure and is a true and real game...
An engraving on a celling, of three humans(2 men 1 woman)an asteroid with panels, exsplosives, aleins, light bridges, annoying puzzles, and little green capsules, all in outer space. The humans are arceologists, one man is dead and crazy, the other man is the hero, the green capsules healed the dead guy and are better then crack, and the aleins are saved at the very end, and the asteroid is having a party with the exsplosives.

(hint :DOTT, was also made by the makers and its relitivly old)

This is also very vague. Could be Monkey Island 1, Alone in the Dark, or Thief 2's ghost ship mod...

An engraving on a corner, of a drow female rogue, young human wizard, human warrior, and two inter-dimentional beings(one male-ish, one female-ish), a dragon, and an older wizard. The drow, young wizard, and warrior are fighting monsters, the interdimentional beings are traped as skeletons, and the dragon is bowing to the male-ish inter-dimentional being, and the old wizard is dead.

(Hint:It might me difficult-ish but it was an Xbox game)

Would guess but I dont know any non guessed.

Don't tell me that's another Portal reference.
And, just to add to the chaos of all these unguessed engravings:

On the wall is an engraving of a shovel, Gary Coleman, a human and humans.  The human is raising the shovel.  The humans are screaming.  The Human is striking down Gary Coleman. The humans are running away.

Probably could have come up with a better reference...  Too easy for those who know it, but the other idea I had for it was waaay out there.

No clue, oh well.

Edit: The Wiki says: Giant space hamsters are fictional creatures originating in the Spelljammer campaign setting for the Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying game.

Engraved on the wall is a rendition of an ape, a human, and barrels. The human is leaping over the barrels. The ape is raising the barrel.

Engraved on the wall is a rendition of a submarine, missiles, a missile silo, a radar, a radar, and a SAM site, and a carrier. The submarine is launching the missiles. The missile silo is converting into a SAM site. The missiles are striking down the radar. The radar is speaking with the SAM site. The SAM site is striking down the missiles. The carrier is switching to anti-submarine mode.

That one might be a bit too generic though.

Engraved on the wall is a roller coaster, a roller coaster track, and humans. The roller coaster track is broken. The roller coaster is flying. The humans are panicking.

Engraved on the wall is a squirrel and teddiz. The squirrel is striking down the teddiz.

OK, I probably put too many. Oh well   :p

And yeah, it was Defcon, a good albeit rather dark game.

The one with the crystal shard was system shock II.

Engraved on the wall is an image of a shocklance, a light armor, a Blood Eagle troop, and a 'Derm troop. The Blood Eagle troop is wearing the light armor. The Blood Eagle troop is invisible. The Blood Eagle troop is carrying the shocklance. The Blood Eagle troop is striking down the 'Derm troop.

Great, great game, way better than the sequel. I love running people over in the fighter.

Engraved on the wall is an image of a Clayman, a dynamite Clayman, and a Bug Monster. The Clayman is pushing the dynamite Clayman. The Bug Monster is eating the dynamite Clayman. The dynamite Clayman is striking down the Bug Monster

Engraved on the floor is an image of a Big Robot Bill and a Blue Teddy Bear. The Big Robot Bill is embracing the Blue Teddy Bear.

I lost my original CD for that game, which is a shame, because it's worth like $100 dollars now.

This one still stands. To clarify, that's not something that actually happens in the game - at least I think not. The quest usually just cancels if you don't make it on time.

One more for the same game, should be a lot more obvious:

"Engraved on the wall is a picture of a human ranger, a space fighter, seven Feyan military fighters, and a Dominator battleship. The human ranger is sitting in the space fighter. The space fighter is heavily damaged. The seven Feyan military fighters are fleeing the system. The Dominator battleship is advancing."

Seeing how "widespread" Space Rangers 2 are in your parts, I don't think the names of the races actually meant much. But I should have probably omitted the "Dominator" name, yeah.  :)

Btw, there's a game I *know* no one here knows.  :)

"Engraved on the wall is a Sharatar Heavy Cruiser class, one thousand Sharatar Light Fighters, and a Magellan Orbital Base class. The Heavy Cruiser is releasing the thousand Light Fighters. The Orbital Base looks terrified."

The game is hardly known outside of Russia, mainly because nobody bothered to translate it into english. Despite that, it is impossible to enter ship names in russian within the game. o_O

I thought we were guessing PC games only.

Anyways, no, missed again.

I'll go the easy way again and give you another clue - you can be either a dwarf, or any of the three humans, and you get a glowing sword for the last battle in any case. The power of said sword will depend on your actions during the game, and a decision when you obtain it.

The one with the man in the town with ghosts is Daggerfall

On the wall is an engraving of a hero, three crooked arrows, and a swarm of bats.  The hero is raising the three crooked arrows.  The swarm of bats is raising the hero.

Hunt the Wumpus. Note: I haven't really played it either, so it's only fair that I answer this one.

Since others posted indie games, I'll post one of my favorites too. Nobody is going to guess my last one anyway.

This is a sterling silver amulet. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.
On the item is an engraving of a human in sterling silver. The human is traveling.
On the item is an engraving of a humans and a shadowy figure in sterling silver. The shadowy figure is striking down the humans.

I'll try one.

This is an engraving of a Hero, Sidekick, and an Army. The Hero is commanding the Army. The Army is fighting a rival Army. The Sidekick is shooting the Hero in the back of the head.

Easy one.

Engraved on the wall is a masterfully designed image of a human, a whip, and a vampire. The human is raising the whip. The vampire looks terrified.

EDIT:

This one is subtle.

Engraved on the wall is an image of a dwarf, a goblin, and an adamantine crossbow. The dwarf is raising the adamantine crossbow. The goblin is dead. The goblin is arguing with the dwarf. The dwarf is making an obscene gesture.

my first obligatory guess is CS but that's probably wrong

Most people probably won't get this one:

Is this Startopia? It definitely had aliens building inside a space station.
I only played the demo though and wasn't very impressed back them.

I'll re-ask my previous two as well:

"Engraved on the wall is a picture of Sharatar Heavy Cruiser class, one thousand Sharatar Light Fighters, and a Magellan Orbital Base class. The Heavy Cruiser is releasing the thousand Light Fighters. The Orbital Base looks terrified."

"Engraved on the wall is a picture of a Dwarf, a sword, and the Lord of Darkness. The Dwarf is raising the sword. The Lord of Darkness is laughing. The sword emits a bright blue glow."

The latter is NOT an MMO, NOT related to Tolkien, and the dwarf is NOT the only possible hero in the game.

The second is not NWN, Necro. After another wrong guess I'll have to tell the game's name.

The first is not Imperium Galactica, but you're fairly close. You're highly unlikely to find the game on google, and there's no entry for it on Wikipedia, but the game exists, and is still praised by those who got their hands on it.

I'll throw in another engraving about the second game.
"Engraved on the wall is a human, a two-handed axe, and orcs. The orcs are surrounding the human. The human is swinging the two-handed axe around. The two-handed axe is leaving a red trail behind it. The orcs are decapitated."

That is obviously Dungeon Siege II. Man, that game took so long to finish... admittedly, this was mainly because the only character I had who could survive a few boss attacks (Lothar) had all his points thrown into defensive stuff, and once the rest of the party was dead against one (usually within half a minute) it was a race between the Lothar and the boss to see who could wear the other down to nothing first. And by race, I mean crawl. Still, he always won  :D

Shoot, I played the demo and forgot the name of it. Ninja bunny on a revenge streak, that's what I remember. I also remember it was a damn good game, even thought it was only the demo.

Edit: Lugaru, that's it, yup.

Hmm...

Engraved on the wall is a rendition of spacecraft, spacecraft, a spaceport, and illegal goods. The spacecraft is looting the spacecraft. The spacecraft is looting the spaceport. The spacecraft is selling the illegal goods

Engraved on the wall is a rendition of a giant mining drill and a space station. The giant mining drill is striking down the space station.

Both are the same game.

Also, I'm gonna go shotgun and say either Privateer or Elite.

And no, actually, it's neither of those, although Elite probably inspired it. Hint: It's independently developed.

Yup, Zork II had a sequence where you introduce a dragon to a glacier. The dragon thinks its reflection is another dragon, and in its attempt to engage said reflection in mortal combat, melts the glacier and drowns.

Alfador, was that a cunningly concealed answer to my engraving? "mortal combat"? Anyways, I think that was a bit too easy.   :)

Let's try something of a different genre...

"Engraved on the wall is a picture of a flying machine, flying machines, humans, elves, dwarves, a human, and orcs. The orcs are in the flying machines. The humans, elves, dwarves, and the human are on the flying machine. The orcs are striking down the flying machine. The humans, elves, and dwarves are dying. The human survives."

Heh, I just read nearly this whole thread.  I noticed an important game was missing an engraved description!

Engraved on the wall is map.  The map has markings named Heliopios, a engraving of a tank and an engraving of a spearman.  The tank is struck down by the spearman.  The spearman is making a dismissive gesture.

The viking eating a lizard is Rune.

In Arcanum, you can be a human too, and you are also on board the zeppelin when it crashes, and also survive. The dwarf, ultimately, does not.

I know several games that most here will (most likely) never guess.

"Engraved on the wall is a glider, gliders and metallic spheres. The glider is striking down the gliders. The metallic spheres drop out of the gliders. The glider collects the metallic spheres."

What I had posted earlier...

Apparently no one has guessed it, so I'll add to it.

On the wall is an engraving of a large human, a small human, and piranhas.  The large human is raising the small human.  The small human is speaking to the large human.  The piranhas are jumping at the small human.

And one more to add:

On the wall is an engraving of a large human, small humans, and a sarcophagus.  The large human is emerging from the sarcophagus.  The large human is shooting and killing the small humans.

Ah, hell with it.

On the wall is an engraving of a large human and a polar bear.  The polar bear is making a plaintive gesture.  The large human is making a threatening gesture.

Correct!  :D

I hope I remembered correctly, that there were ants in the puppy cave...
Despite my name, I like troll healers most in that game because of their insane regeneration rates. But wizards and elementalists are my second favourite classes there. And even with them I try to use magic only in an emergency, like beeing surrounded by giant ants, or beeing surrounded by anything actually. I am no expert in ADOM though. My best was reaching the water temple.
Ah man, I just hope the dev of ADOM works on his game this year for a change...

Post by: Sean Mirrsen on January 21, 2008, 02:41:00 pm
Alright, just for educational value, I'll answer the two my riddles that went (and no doubt would have went forever) unanswered.

The gliders one is Mechanoids, known in your West as A.I.M. More specifically, A.I.M. 2, because the first part probably was not released outside of Russia.

The one with the Sharatar heavy cruiser, a thousand fighters, and an orbital base is Remember Tomorrow. It has an english name, despite never being released in any english-speaking country. Even though it's been, quite ironically, mostly forgotten, it still stands out as a game posessing two features hardly ever repeated in any global space RTS.
[offtopic]
The game's first innovative feature, though not the most praised, was the nonlinear research akin to real-life research, where you could assign scientists to theoretical sciences like maths, physics, biology, and chemistry, and through them open up applied sciences like cold fusion, element particles, subspace, automatization, etc, that will, given enough scientist-hours, will lead to certain items becoming available. I think Space Empires 5 (or was it GalCiv2?) came pretty close to that.
The second feature, and the most unique of the game, was the ship designer. You would never expect an action-RTS (I didn't mention the global scale part of he game went in realtime?) to throw puzzles at you, but in the ship designer, you were thrown against one of those. The entire ship's profile is marked with a grid of small cells, with various large and narrow spaces, and areas specific for certain parts like engines and weapon mounts, that were still available for any fitting part. The puzzle in this case is trying to maximize the ship's effectiveness by balancing weapon power, speed, range, sensors, special abilities, shields, spacecraft hangar space, and some more, against total required power and the generators that are required for it, ship mass, and resources required, all crammed into the space limited by the ship. Some of the components you acquire through research posess exactly the same (sometimes even worse) parameters as those you already have by the time, but are aligned and shaped differently, allowing you to stick more of them into the ship, making you spend quite some time in the shipyards' design module, maximizing your ships' effectiveness. An example is the mark two fuel tank, that uses more energy while storing the same amount of fuel, but is a 4x6 rectangle instead of the normal 5x5, allowing to place it in the bow of the Vagalar corvette, for example, where no other components could be placed before. With 6 races to play with, and 4 capital, 5 fighter, and 2 satellite class hulls available for each, the battles in the game are won and lost in the design module.

However, no matter how I advertise it here, nobody will play it, alas, because it is only in Russian. If you were looking for a reason to learn Russian though...  ;)

The only place I can think of where the game can be downloaded (legally, I must add, since it's 10+ years old by now and the developer is long gone) is here.

I never knew Battletoads were on PC. I remember only the NES and Genesis versions. So, either Battletoads, or "Battletoads and Double Dragon".

"Engraved on the wall is an image of a human, a bat, pills, bullets, and a human. The human eats the pills. The human shoots the bullets. The human dodges the bullets. The human is striking down the human with the bat."

Let's try another:

Engraved on the wall is an image of a red priestess and a black witch and demons. The priestess and the witch are striking down the demons.

Also: the colors refer to their clothes.

I was rather stumped until I saw

quote:

Muffles
Get out of here, STALKER.
Bay Watcher

Then it occured to me.  Strange how that happens.

I've heard some of the hype for STALKER, but never tried it.  I saw some screenshots after a time, and thought "Huh?  This guy must be using really low settings", but I couldn't find any that had better ones, so I eventually lost interest and went to do download something else.  I forget what.

Title: Re: Engraving Game
Post by: Cthulhu on February 15, 2008, 08:05:00 am
Yeah, it has pretty good graphics, but nearly everything that made it so hyped was cut out. (Blowouts, lots of mutants, huge sections of the map, realistic AI)

If you read the site it puts this glorious image into your mind, and you think, zomgwtfepic, then you play it and it's nothing like it.  Mods make it tolerable though, even re-implement blowouts.

On the wall is a masterful engraving of a man, a woman, pale mutant thingies, a silhouette of a guy, a lighthouse, a shadow, a game, and everyone.

The lighthouse is holding up the man, the woman, and the pale mutant thingies.
The woman is making a plaintive gesture.  The man is brandishing a blunt object, the pale mutant thingies are striking a menacing pose.  The shadow is rising in the ocean.  The sillhouette of a guy is standing up and twitching.  The game is being cancelled.  Everyone is screaming.

Hint: It's set in the ruins of a town where there were a lot of fishy(lolpun) things going on.

Title: Re: Engraving Game
Post by: Kagus on February 16, 2008, 11:47:00 am
I have absolutely no clue...  Luckily, I haven't had the misfortune of sitting on a game that got cancelled.  Well, lately.

The "fishy" reference makes me think of the Cthulhu mythos, but the only game I can think of with that would be "Call of Cthulhu", and that wasn't cancelled.  Nor did it have a woman (so far as I know).

Also, it sounds reasonable that something based off of the Cthulhu mythos would get slashed.  Too fresh and interesting.

Title: Re: Engraving Game
Post by: Cthulhu on February 16, 2008, 12:01:00 pm
You're very close.  It was by the same company that made the Call of Cthulhu game, and it barely avoided cancellation.  The last 25% or so, and all the testing and finalization was done by one dedicated developer who worked feverishly on it knowing full well he wouldn't receive a penny for his efforts.  The company was going under fast, and the sales of the first game weren't enough to complete the sequel.

Could have sworn I responded to this... anyway, you're absolutely right. I know it was easy, but I just HAD to resurrect this thread using the awesome game I got this Sunday.  :D I would've had it eleven hours sooner, but stupid Westlake Center doesn't allow the Gamestop there to do midnight releases, for security reasons I guess. That could refer to any of the breakout-type games...

On the wall is an exceptionally detailed rendition of elves, dwarves, humans, orcs, uruks, goblins, a balrog, a game, and a gamer.

The elves are fighting with the uruks.  The dwarves are fighting with the goblins.  The humans are fighting with the balrog.  The orcs are fighting with the orcs.  The balrog isn't moving fast enough. The game is disappointing the gamer.
