Title: Music That Just Says, 'Dwarf Fortress'
Post by: Jake on November 06, 2008, 02:53:08 pm
Led Zepplin - Immigrant Song (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=svR3iXKTJvc) Definitely the song to play as your dwarves start to carve their new home out of the side of a mountain in some desolate wasteland.
Dragonforce - Operation Ground And Pound (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ywxm6zLEjFY) Everything by Dragonforce, in fact.
This (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2-ct1mo0CV8) arrangement of some Chinese pop ballad I've never head of. Pleasantly mellow, makes me think of long days of peace and industry as my dwarves occupy themselves with great works of architecture and craftsdwarfship.
Enya - Book of Days (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=h2gt4vUIWhE) In similar vein to above; the song I'd play over a time-lapse video of a grand construction project.

Feel free to add your own.

Personally, I've replaced the song_game.ogg with "Battle Comrade" from the Disgaea soundtrack.  It's upbeat and hot-blooded and generally awesome, and makes my dwarfs feel accomplished when they kill a few orcs

What about speed metal reminds you of Dwarf Fortress?

It's like putting ordinary, bland, generic metal onto a vinyl turntable and playing it at a higher RPM. That is to say, it has nothing to do with dwarves.

I also dislike it, of course.

Xandria- Firestorm (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_I8zaWOLC8) reminds me of Goblins ^^

and some viking themed ones:

Amber&Gefährten - Zwergenlied (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=e02m0WDe3vI)

I really like their cover of Master of Puppets, too. Good stuff. Check out Plays Metallica by Four Cellos.

Between them, and the String Quartet Tribute series, a lot of good rock has been intriguingly covered with classical instruments.

Does anyone by any chance have the words to In the Hall of the Mountain King?  T'version I've got has a chant in the background, not sung to the main tune but to the rough tune of "dah dada dah dah  dah dada dah dah  dah dada dah dah dada dada" but I've never been able to find the words.  I expect they're in Norwegian.

SCV's? I beg pardon?

And whenever I hit "An ambush! Curse them!" I grin and turn on my Testament and let loose my marksdwarves and wrestling champions. So awesome. And when I'm sending goblins through my labyrinth, I'm going to do nothing but blast Through the Fire and the Flames- namely because I'll have war fire imps chasing them the entire way, along with floodgates holding magma back linked up to fields of pressure plates. So, so awesome.

Yeah, this one definitely says Boatmurdered to me.  Or, well, how MOST of us play DF.

Oh I built a little empire
Out of, some crazy garbage
Called the blood of the exploited working class
But they've overcome their shyness,
now they're calling me your highness
And a world screams "Kiss me, son of God"

I ussually have ITunes run through my collection of warcraft 2 music. Considering i ussually end up at war with both elves and goblins, the music just helps me get in the mood to marshall my troops and destroy the enemies.

And Warcraft 2 had the best soundtrack

The Tristram Theme from diablo is pretty dark. I like that one too

It may not be the most DFish music ever, but the major part of my DF experience takes place late at night, which means I'll be listening mostly to late night music. Such as Nadja (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgJdLr6uU80).

Yeah, it's not exactly screaming "Dwarves!", but I'm really used to listening to them while playing DF so I guess that counts. And what do I know, some of you might actually like it.

Top of my playlist for DF will always be....
Wagner's Siegfried funeral march (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20RldhK9354) From the Götterdämmerung.... and with a name like that it must be DF.

It builds up slowly, then when the tempo hits.. you want to grab your axe, bite the dog, and kick your neighbor.

Gamma Goblins = Awesome.

I always liked a track from Final Fantasy III / 6j called Devil's Lab, and think it's very appropriate for the game. It's dark sounding, using an anvil & hammer as well as the sound of machinery for the bass. Parts of it suggest a little too high of a technology level, but the strings in the background fit perfectly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMK-y8w6YhA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMK-y8w6YhA)

For your average everyday operation of DF: You must require

1. Dwarves. This ingredient is ESSENTIAL, and must be had in HUGE quantities.
2. For the peaceful hauling, and crafting:http://www.goear.com/listen.php?v=9ce4f53 (http://www.goear.com/listen.php?v=9ce4f53), a Puttin' on the ritz version by They Might Be Giants

Castle in the Mist as well as Heal from the ICO soundtrack for peaceful bits, and when there's combat, switch it to the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack. That's all you need for good atmosphere.

Did someone mention Manowar's "The Gods Made Heavy Metal" before?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XyBMYbLiCU

I even had an idea of making ASCII-tileset movie illustrating the song.. Kind of - dwarves arrive, strike the earth, break caverns, build forges, fight back sieges, strike adamantine and finally release HFS that epically wipe whole fortress. And with final riff the last survivor pulls the 'Fuck You All!' level and everything collapses in a cloud of dust.

Something about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlQHJU4SD88 (A sorcerer's pledge by Candlemass) reminds me of DF, especially seeing your old fortress in adventure mode. Maybe it's the "Dark are the secrets within these walls. Only the castle itself knows what it keeps." part.

Night, Movement 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jxrn8NAIz4Y&feature=related) and 2 and 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qz3yluUAu8)

The sadness and horror of the piece (based on you guessed it, the Holocaust) fits the inevitability of every fortresses destruction.  What is a Dwarf Fortress but a concentration camp at your hands.  Yes, they may be happy there, as they ecstatically ignore the deaths of their loved ones in their Legendary Dining Room, but inevitably, they perish at the cruel hands of !!Fun!!

Wow.  Now I feel kind of depressed...

Eh, I prefer ambient/instrumental music to omgMETAL! It fits a lot nicer with playing Dwarf Fortress imo.

Noise - Bronzemurder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVarcOINyaU)

Noise - Boatmurdered (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2orv_bjp6o)

Dwarf Fortress (Orchestral) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqPG8AHiiPQ)

HOMM IV (Grass Theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-gnjMemqdE)

Unreal OST - Shared Dig (Rrajigar Mines) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YWfb3ti4V8)

Unreal OST - Chizra (Elisha Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olAeGGTzRM4)

Unreal OST - Harobed Village (Elisha Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxKkmNNgkvg)

Unreal RTNP OST - Journey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch5STUMfKlg)

I could probably link the OSTs of several games with really atmospheric music all day but the list would get too long.. ::)

I've never heard anything so insane as the original DF music track. It is an utterly hopeless melancholy, as if what you're doing makes no sense in the first place, and will ultimately destroy you and your entire civilization. When you first hear it, you don't know for sure, but you can feel that your doom was sealed hundreds of years ago.

Cannot seem to find it anywhere on YouTube, so no samples.  According to the page, what we have here (http://www.demonoid.me/files/details/1532288/008221388264/) is the Koto Ensemble of the Ikuta School, Japan.  Three tracks, roughly 46 minutes, and very much in the feel of the original DF music, albeit with an eastern bent.  Set these three to loop in Audacious, and mute DF itself.

Also good for... well, everything but headbanging and sex.  :D

EDIT - Struck by brilliance a few minutes ago:  if you have a player that can handle SPC or RSN files, go fetch the soundtrack to the SNES game King Arthur's World.  Better still, also fetch the rom for the game itself.

Victory Song by Ensiferum is definitely for sieges.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Once I can go to my enemies, there is Tulimyrsky (Firestorm) by Moonsorrow and Gods of war arise by Amon Amarth. Or they would fit a siege I lost pretty well.

The hero by Amon Amarth is the song to play when you die in adventure mode.

Pink Floyd, Sorrow. Don't know why, it just stirs awesomeness in me. I unfortunately can't find the release version ANYWHERE on the internet, only the live version which (IMO) don't have the same effect. So if you've got a copy of Echoes - Best of Pink Floyd or Momentary Lapse of Reason around, please have a listen to it. Such an awesome song. Any song about 8mins long ending in a 3min guitar solo is awesome anyway, then when you factor in the REST of the song + Dave Gilmour it's just AWESOME.

No idea why it's DF music. It just IS. One day I was playing DF and it came on from random shuffle and... well.

I really like playing tundra/taiga maps and listening to Summoning. A Melodic Blackmetal band which base all their songs on Tolkiens universe. Pretty slow music with a desolate atmosphere.

I cook my meals on an active volcano
My roast chicken is a dinosaur
Wotan and Donar are relatives to me
But it's been ages since either has been seen

I live only at night
I ride in the dark

I am Vulgaris Magistralis
On a mammoth I ride around
I am Vulgaris Magistralis
on Sunday I ride a mastodon

A crazy professor heard my name
and riding on his Solex to Achterhoek he came
With cameras and lassos he's hunting after me
But my cave has not been found and I remain unseen

I'm a true champion
in a real vision

I am Vulgaris Magistralis
On a mammoth I ride around
I am Vulgaris Magistralis
on Sunday I ride a mastodon

I slip through the woods of the Achterhoek
They want to cast me for a part in a film
In the middle of the night I come out of my cave
Mies Bouwman* and Spielberg want me center stage

But they won't get me
No, they won't get me
No, they won't get me
No'
No
No

I am Vulgaris Magistralis
On a mammoth I ride around
I am Vulgaris Magistralis
on Sunday I ride a mastodon

I am Normalis Archivaris
And I carve chronicles in rock
I am Normalis, it's veracious
And I work the women with my club
