Other Games / Balatro - Poker 2.0
« on: March 06, 2024, 12:26:48 pm »
What happens when you combine poker with a deckbuilder roguelike? Balatro.

You start off with a typical 52 card playing card deck. Using jokers (cards that change the scoring of various cards/hands), planet cards (increase the base value of hands), tarots (variety of effects, but mostly dealing with changing characteristics of your individual cards), spectral cards (basically superpowered tarots), and booster packs (has a high chance of containing cards that have already been upgraded), you attempt to get through 8 rounds.

Each round has three "opponents" - Small Blind, Large Blind, and Boss Blind. Blinds start as low as 300 chips (for the round 1 small blind) to 300,000 chips (for the round 8 boss with the special 'extra high blind'.) After you beat the round 8 boss, you're allowed to free play against blinds that increase astronomically - there's an achievement and unlockable joker behind the round 13 boss.

That's about it - the game is all about finding broken combinations of jokers and cards; using planets to improve the payoffs of your most-played hands. Certain jokers are unlocked by fufilling conditions - like having 5 'glass' cards in your deck, or winning a game without ever playing a flush, etc.

Different starting scenarios are given by different deck colors - for instance, the Red deck starts with an extra discard every round, while Yellow starts with an extra $10.

It's well put together, and offers a surprising amount of gameplay. I've managed to beat the lowest difficulty level (white stakes) with most of the decks, and the second level (red stakes) with the Green deck (which gains extra cash for left over plays/discards, but doesn't earn interest like the other decks do.)

Play With Your Buddies / Looking for a Blood Bowl Player
« on: March 03, 2023, 09:31:58 am »
Hey all - the other forum that I'm an active member of (Ars Technica) is putting together a FUMBBL Blood Bowl tournament. Unfortunately, we've only been able to scrape together 7 players. We'd love to have (at least) 8 players, so that we don't end up with a team having to take a bye against an empty slot.

Tournament will operate on a round-robin, where everyone gets to play every other team at least once.
Games will take place weekly. All teams must be new for the tournament.

Current teams:
Chaos Renegade
Skaven
Amazon
Ogre
Necromantic Horror
Orc
Chaos Dwarf

It's a pretty bashy lineup, so I'd probably recommend against halflings, snotlings, or goblins. Note that, although it happened to work out that all the teams are currently unique, there's no rule against doubling up if your favorite happens to be already taken.

So yeah, if we could get 1, 3, or 5 more players, that'd be great!

Hey all,

I've talked about my writing in the past, so I won't blather on, but I'd like to note that all the books that I've written are free to download until the 18th.

Links to the books are in my signature - seriously, have a read! I think it's great stuff (obviously prejudiced), but I'd like everyone to read my stuff. (I'd love it even more if everyone would pay for my stuff, but I've gotten over that at this point.)

Creative Projects / (e)Published A Book
« on: January 17, 2015, 07:10:02 pm »
Hello everyone,

After roughly 2 years of writing and editing, I'm pleased to say that my newest book is available. It's the longest thing I've written so far, but at 25,000 words, it's still is a little short to be called a novel (wiki puts it as a Novella). It's a fantasy book, titled Errant Heroics, available here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S96RTLK

The entire process took far longer than it should - I originally wrote the book in pen in a little notebook during my commute to and from work. This actually went fairly quickly - no more than a handful of months, I'd estimate. Once I'd finished, I started the process of transferring the work over to a Word file, editing it at the same time. This is the part that took so long - not because it's all that hard, but my job involves me typing things into Word 8 hours a day, and going home to do more of that really didn't appeal; so I procrastinated. During this time, I had my family looking over incomplete drafts, doing some editing and offering suggestions.

It actually took a promise to my parents that I'd present them the completed draft by Christmas that finally got me really working on finishing everything up. It looked like I was going to succeed... until I remembered that the story wasn't just a single notebook (written front to back, then flipped over and written back to front) but I'd actually spilled into a second notebook. So I ended up finishing by New Years. Some more rounds of editing, a couple hours in Paint Shop Pro to put together a cover, and here we are.

Anyway, I'd love it if everyone takes a look - there's a link on the right side that will let you download the first 5 chapters. I'd love it even more if everyone bought the book, but I don't pretend that's going to happen.

Play With Your Buddies / Dominions 4 - Round 12 (And We're Up!)

Game's up! Bay12GamesRound12

Ok, so I saw a neat idea on desura - basically, players draft up a nation, each player picking a unit/commander with each unit ID being unique. I'm actually involved in a draft now, although I'm finding that the desura player base is a little too flakey for this - we're almost a week into choosing, and we're still only halfway through picking the first unit (the scout.)

Hopefully the fact that Bay12 isn't (generally) filled with people who say they'll join games then disappear into the void will allow us to make a successful draft. Hell, at the current rate my other draft is going, perhaps we can draft, play the game, and write up after action reports before I finish my desura draft.

So the draft is broken down into a number of categories:
(Note for all picks - units must not be summons (ie: they must have a gold/res cost), and, at least for this draft, must be chosen from the national rosters. Any sacred units (with the sole exception of the 'Normal Priest' pick) will default to capital only.)

WE WILL BE DRAFTING FROM THE EARLY ERA

Normal Scout - anything that's got #stealth, cannot lead units, and has no magic.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Normal Commander - anything that's not holy, has no magic, and can lead units.

NOTE: By default, the starting army will consist of the Normal Scout and Normal Commander, with 250 gold of each of your two cheapest troop choices. By default, your nations PD will consist of your two cheapest troop choices, led by your Normal Commander, then your two more expensive troops choices led by a commander slot of your choice at 20+ PD.

After we've gone through all this, all players get 5 points of 'perks' which they can use to do the following:
1 - Change any troop that is capital only to be available at any fort.
1 - Change any troop (resources >5) that is fort recruitable to be non-fort recruitable (foreignunit).
2 - Change any troop (resources <= 5) that is fort recruitable to be non-fort recruitable (foreignunit).
2 - Change any commander that is capital only to be available at any fort.
2 - Change your starting army to a commander and two unit choices worth 250 gold each of your choice.
2 - Change your PD to commanders and units of your choice.
3 - Change any unit into a commander. (this will make most units 40 leadership, plus have item slots)
3 - Change any commander into a unit. (Note: units lose magic paths)
3 - Make something sacred. (Note: this will make it capital only, unless you pay additional points.)

So, anyone interested?

Current players:

2) Boksi - Thule
3) Hellheart - Shao Limb

Play With Your Buddies / Dominions 4 - Round 11B (Medieval Boogaloo)
« on: October 10, 2014, 05:24:28 am »
Game name is "Bay12GamesRound411B"

The number of Dominions games I'm currently in has dropped like a stone recently, what with both 4.06 and 4.09 ending.

Do we have enough free players to start up a new round?
We do.

I'm thinking MA or LA, since so many of my games have been EA recently.
Game will be in MA.

Map will be decided once we know how many players we're looking at.
Game is on Peliwyr (http://www.desura.com/games/dominions-4-thrones-of-ascensions/forum/thread/peliwyr-12718-wraparound)

Probably using Worthy Heroes. Anything else is up for discussion.
Worthy Heroes only, because no one else brought anything up: http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=2358

Thinking low-ish % of thrones needed to win... but probably not so low as in 4.09.
9/18, level 1 thrones only.

So if there's interest, throw out your preferred Era and Nation. I think I'm going to throw in a rule that I saw at the Desura forums - either multiple water nations (2+) or none at all.
The seas are free for anyone who has the amphibious units or magic needed to get to them - everyone's on land.

Toady Two - MA  Eriu
HopFlash - MA Shinuyama
Margrave - MA Jotunheim
tompliss - MA Ashdod
Hellheart - MA Vanheim
Elfeater - MA Ulm
Puzzlemaker - MA Pangaea
gman8181 - MA Bandar Log
Shadowlord - MA Agartha
Kavenor - MA Sceleria
and of course myself - MA Marignon.

Play With Your Buddies / Dominions 4 Round 4.09 - Yomi wins!
« on: August 05, 2014, 06:46:40 pm »
Since it looks like my 4.06 game will be going into stasis for the next week, I got killed early in 4.07, and 4.08 filled up before I got a chance to join, I figured I'd try my hand at hosting my own game.

Game: Bay12GamesRound409
Map: Catacombs of the Titans
Mods: Worthy Heroes v1.23
Era: Early Era
Disciples: No
Time allowance: TBD
Special site frequency: 50
Random event frequency: Common
Research: Standard
Score graphs: no
Hall of Fame: 15
Artifact forging limit : limited
Thrones: 5 points of thrones needed. 10 level 1 thrones, 2 level 2 thrones.
Renaming: allowed

I'm currently open on number of players and map. I won't lie, I'd love to get the chance to try out either of the maps that I made (Catacombs of the Titans or Oram Dakon, The World of Omens), but I'm a mapmaking neophyte so I'm sure that my maps are probably flawed in any number of ways; we'd probably do better using one of the tried-and-true maps.

Berytos - tompliss
Tir na n'Og - DarkerDark

General Discussion / Got my first 1-star review
« on: April 19, 2013, 07:47:28 pm »
I guess it had to happen eventually.

As you may or may not know, I am currently trying my hand as an author. I've currently got two works published, which you can look at through my sig, if you so desire.

While my books were available exclusively through Amazon (for the first three months after being published) I offered them for free over several weekends. One of the reasons that I did this was in the hopes of getting more reviews on my books, with the thought that books that have more ratings should, hopefully, get more people looking and (maybe even) buying them.

Well, it looks like I finally got a review from someone (who isn't a member of either this or another forum I'm a regular at) who picked up the book:

"I read the first story. It was terrible, with absolutely no point to it... When the paragraph stopped in the middle of the page, I thought that perhaps it was only the first chapter... It wasn't.

The book was free though, so I guess I can't really complain. I also didn't bother the read anything after the first story."

Harsh.

Personally, I think the guy didn't give me enough of a chance - there's 16 stories in my collection, and he just read the one?

Maybe it's partially my own fault - "Fire", the first story, is also what I would call the most 'artsy' or perhaps 'experimental', and I've gotten mixed reviews even within my own family and friends. They generally either love it, or say "what's the point?" (much like this guy.) Perhaps I should've picked something more mainstream as my first story.

I don’t know, just so this topic isn't just me rambling - what do you think is required for a review? If someone reads just the one story, but hates it enough to take the time and actually write a review of it, is that valid? Does he have any obligation to slog through more of the book?

General Discussion / Free eBook Giveaway
« on: March 08, 2013, 08:00:34 am »
Hey all,

As you may or may not know (depending on if you frequent the Creative Projects forum or not) I'm currently doing the independent author thing. As of this moment, I've published two different ebooks:

Fire and Other Short Stories , which is a collection of fiction (mostly science fiction and/or fantasy) short stories.
and
Entangled Realities, which is a fiction/science fiction/fantasy novelette.

To celebrate the fact that the 3-month timer on these books being Amazon-exclusive is going to be ending soon and since I've still got three days worth of freebie giveaways, I'm putting up both books for free from today (the 8th) to Sunday (the 10th.)

Download and enjoy!

After you're done reading my books, I'd love it if you'd post a review on Amazon, although it's not necessary.

Creative Projects / On Writing
« on: December 18, 2012, 10:30:38 pm »
New Stuff: My 90-day exclusive with Amazon is going to be ending soon, but I still have 3 days left of free ebook promotion. Therefore, this Friday (the 8th) through Sunday (the 10th) both my books will be available for free, for anyone who hasn't picked up my books during the last couple of times I gave my books out for free.

After years (mostly on and off) of writing and editing, I’ve finally managed to scrounge up enough decent words that I’ve managed to string them together into sentences, paragraphs, and stories.  Those stories are now packaged and e-published. Since I don’t want this topic to just be a shill (buy my books!)  Let me talk about the processes involved in getting to this point and my thoughts.

First is, in my opinion, the easiest part of all: Come up with an idea.
I think that everyone has at least one idea floating around their heads; something that they think would make a good story. Nowadays, for a book, that idea is all that you need – no longer are authors tied to the physical publishing giants if they want their ideas to become something real. Although traditional publishing is still alive and well, there is a big (and growing) market for electronic-only books. All I have to do is type the words on the computer and I can make a product, something that would have been impossible a few short decades ago.

Which brings us to the second part: Writing it down.
This is where I’d guess (pulling a number out of my ass) 90% of the ideas that I just talked about die. Why do they die? Because actually sitting down and writing is hard. There are a million other things you could be doing other then writing, and virtually all of them offer a lot more short-term reward. It’s hours and hours of sitting in front of a screen, tapping on the keyboard, trying to turn those ideas into something concrete.

Part three: Editing.
I’d wager this kills another segment of pieces: You’ve finally gotten all your thoughts down, hundreds or thousands or even tens of thousands of words – now it's time to take those words and make sure that they actually form a coherent story. You’d think that once you’ve put in all that effort to actually write the thing, it should be easy to just make corrections, but it can be a harrowing process. Entire sections of your work might not gel the way that you’d originally intended and end up needing a rewrite, or worse - in the trash.

Part four: More editing (by other people this time.)
In any work, I believe that there is a point when you simply can no longer see the faults. You know the story backwards and forwards; you know the motivations, the characters, the places, and the back story. Because of this, your eyes will just jump over faults that someone who is coming at the story cold would point out immediately. For example, perhaps what you thought was an obvious connection between Aggie and Bob turns out to need the knowledge that both Bob and Aggie went to school together, something that you knew (in your head,) but never actually put down in the story.

This part was, by far, the hardest for me, although perhaps not for the reasons you might think. Not because I was ashamed of my writing or afraid of feedback – it was because, unless you’re actually paying them to do it, it’s really damn hard to get people to read your stuff and give you useful feedback. Oh, sure, your friends and family will take your story; they’ll promise to read it and get it back to you.
“I’d be happy to,” they’ll say, when you tell them that you’d really like their input so that you can publish. That’s right; they’ll look you right in the eye and lie to you. And worse, they’ll act indignant when you start pestering them after the second or third (or twelfth) week. “No, I still haven’t gotten around to it; I’ll do it next week, promise.”

Honestly, if it weren’t for the fact that we desperately need them, I’d tell you to leave them out entirely. However, despite reading through my own stories dozens of times, I’ve still managed to leave words out, mangle spellings (what, you mean it’s bated breath, not baited?) and various other corrections that improve my stories which I almost certainly wouldn’t have done on my own.

Part five: Final touches.
You need everything in the correct formats, and make sure that everything looks good in that format. Getting chapter headings working can be a hassle – with one of my books, all I needed to do was DOC -> RTF -> MOBI through Calibre and everything pretty much just turned out right. My other book, however, didn’t format cleanly, and as a result I had to go from DOC -> RTF -> EPUB, edit the book through Sigil, and then move that to MOBI with Calibre.

Books need covers – especially e-books, since that cover is pretty much the only thing that most people will glimpse before deciding if they’re going to look any closer. Small things, but they can be time consuming. I spent a day working on the cover art for my two books, tweaking things to where I liked them, then getting some feedback from others (luckily, this feedback is easier, since you can pretty much just shove the picture in someone’s face, and they’ll be able to tell you immediately if they like it or not.) Take all advice with a grain of salt.

Part six: Publication.
Actually getting your book into Amazon proved to be a fairly painless process, I’m relieved to say. Just upload all the bits, fill in some forms, set a price and wait for review.
Review times, for me, averaged a couple of hours, then there's a "publishing" window that takes another 6-10 hours. Congratulations! You’re now a published author! You can now obsessively hit the f5 key on your monthly sales report.

Note: I chose Amazon because if you agree to a 90-day exclusive with them, they'll give you perks, like the fact that Prime members can look at the books for free (which makes people that much more likely to actually, you know, download something.) After the 90 days pass I'll probably look into publishing on other platforms.

Finally, on to my books:

A novelette, titled “Entangled Realities.” It’s a mix of high fantasy, science fiction and contemporary fiction. It’s roughly 10,000 words long, and is available for 99 cents (or free, if you’re an Amazon Prime member.)

A collection of short stories, titled “Fire and Other Short Stories.” There are 16 pieces, which are mostly a mix of science fiction or fiction with fantastic elements. It weighs in at 28,000 words, and is available for $2.99 (or, again, free through Amazon Prime.)

You can also read the first couple of pages of both pieces without Prime, to see if my writing style agrees with you.

Other Games / Bloodbowl Season 3: Dark Vertibrae Wins!
« on: October 10, 2011, 06:10:44 pm »
So, with the final of Season 2 complete, we're now in place to see to a new season of Bay12 Bloodbowl.

Ok, I've got the League up. The name is: "Bay12 League 3". Password is "Bay12" - remember, capitalization is important.

Although I briefly considered trying something exotic with two pools of players, I decided to go with the tried-and-true (mostly because if I mucked it up, it'd be a massive hassle to recreate.)
1 Pool, everyone plays everyone else once, then the top 4 teams will go into the semi-finals.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We're currently at 12 players. We need an even number of players to start the season. More is better, of course, but we can start at 12 or 14. If you know two people who want to play, now would be the time to get them, otherwise we'll just go with 12.

(From the S2 posting):

Ask yourself: “Am I planning on disappearing entirely from the Bay12 community soon, and will refuse to answer all PMs and Steam messages?” If the answer is YES, then DON’T SIGN UP.

Ask yourself: “Would I like to have a lot of fun with a bunch of other Bloodbowl players, and watch a bunch of teams evolve as they play through a season, ending with a playoffs and finally with one team declared champion?” If the answer is YES, then SIGN UP!

So, as I said, we’re starting off a new season of Bloodbowl, because the other one was saddled with too many non-players.

If you’re interested in playing, please post below! Currently, I think we’ll try to have each player pick a unique race. If anyone wants to dispute that, I’m open to suggestions.

Steam group for B12 Players - so that you can more easily find your opponent: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/B12Bloodbowl

Hello All,

Anyway, I'm currently involved in a couple of private leagues on another forum that I frequent and they're a lot of fun.  Basically, you get however many teams in a league, everyone plays each other once, then the top 4 (or 8, depending on how many teams we get) play a final playoff.

Match reports are generally typed up by at least one of the two teams, and can make for some fun reading.

So, yeah - as per the subject line, any interest here in starting up a B12 league?

Edit: We've got enough people to run a short league, at least, so I'm going ahead and changing the title.
Edit(2): 75% off on Steam! http://store.steampowered.com/app/58520/

Curses / MP5s
« on: January 27, 2011, 02:13:13 pm »
MP5s have a very strange position in the Liberal Crime Squad world.

They are used by security guards when gun laws are conservative enough, however any squad member with a MP5 - even one in a security guard uniform - will be shouted out by the conservatives, just as if they were using an AK47.

Is there any in-game or out of game reason for this discrepancy?
