I'm getting less and less comfortable with the argument against breastfeeding.

If they covered it up, for me, it would still be that MAKA MAKA sound the baby makes while doing it. Gross.

But I feel like the actual arguments against it are fairly sexist. Why should a woman be limited in her actions to appease others around her? Does she exist to serve them?

It's not oppression, either- the woman can choose to do it if she wishes, but it's rather out of taste to subject people to a sight they don't want to see. Constraint, where constraint is possible, is a reasonable request.
It kinda' isn't. That same line of reasoning leads to complete concealment and whatnot. Constraint, where constraint is necessary (significantly beneficial, if one prefers a less loaded word), is a reasonable request -- hygiene, public safety, etc. Not where it's merely possible.
True. But I was speaking of baring breasts, which is hardly something many women want to do.

Having babies in restaurants at all is bad enough, you know they are going to start screaming or squealing at some point.
Babies and toddlers in cinemas, too. When I watched the first hobbit with my brother, there was a 4 year old that asked EVERY FUCKING TEN SECONDS 'What's going to happen next?' loudly. It was irritating as hell. God's sake people, I know you want to take your child with you, but if they're going to be stupidly loud, it *might* be a bad idea.

Depending on how badly I want to sit still (see how terrible my SAD is at any given time) I will report the hell out of those families to the front desk. I shouldn't have to suffer while watching a movie so they can drag their awful spawn to see it and make everyone else miserable.

Parents: know when your kids are acting awful and withdraw them from situations where it bothers others, also learn to just tell them to stfu when necessary.

It's also up to the parents to teach them how to behave in a theatre really.

Ohey is this where we complain about things we don't like? Can we please outlaw talking about people's opinions? It's very upsetting and grating and only makes people angry.

Also ban schools pls I've had a very bad time in mine.

And while we're at it lock away every single specimen of the species homo sapiens which is pretty much the most offensive piece of crap I've ever encountered and whoever designed deserves to be shot, gibbed, quartered, and hung. In that order.

That reason in most instances can be removed without major negative repercussion in probably less than one generation via allowing women to breastfeed their children in public.

This can be said of absolutely anything. "Expose people to death, and it will become commonplace in less than a generation."
You're working under the assumption that your view of breast feeding is the right view. As am I.

Breastfeeding is not death. The comparison is ridiculous.

Also, please answer Sheb's question:

How would you feel about a Muslim guy going around asking British women to cover their hair?

The thing is the parents kept telling him to be quiet and he wouldn't be quiet at all. They just gave up after a while.

If I have kids, I'm taking some kind of thing to 'gag' them. Give them a massive lollypop or something.

see that's the problem right there. you don't give up if you are the parent, just because you are exhausted and are used to your child being horrible isn't an excuse. You get the fuck up and leave the theatre.

I was riding in a bus to the next airplane while traveling and these two kids were jumping up and down on the seats and swinging on the polls, and their mom just looked destroyed and wasn't saying anything.

So I'm getting angrier and angrier and I knew she wasn't going to stop it, so I just finally yelled at them to sit down, now! She didn't even get mad, I kind of think she was relieved.

I wasn't comparing breast feeding to death. He gave a reason that could be applied to anything- you'd get used to it. I stated that I could also get used to death. The fact that the reason can be removed in such a manner doesn't make it a good method.

If the woman wants to cover her hair, fine by me. Again, it's a societal construct. Our society isn't the same as a Muslim one, so I don't share the hair-hiding view. As long as he doesn't try to force her, it's of no consequence.

would you consider it rude for the woman to not cover her hair to appease that man?

Goddammit, I'm arguing for public breastfeeding. Screw you guys!

No. He is an individual from a different culture- we have our own culture.

I think defining what is and isn't okay for each culture can start to blur at some point.

Of course it can. But not when it comes to our view that a woman showing hair isn't a bad thing.

right but I would say there's mixed views on public breastfeeding.

Okay people in this thread have changed my mind, though I still can't come to terms with it in restaurants because there is food involved.

I'm still grossed out by it though.

Yes, there are mixed views. But when the answer doesn't cost much at all, then why shouldn't they do it in a private fashion?

It makes no sense to do it in such a way that others have to see whether they want to or not. It's not fair on those who don't wish to see it.
