I don’t know much about discord, but this seems kind of suspicious. I’ve heard this forum takes over a month to get approved on. Just been sitting in this question all this time? Why does it need to be on a discord voice call? Why not ask for discord help from the discord? https://discord.gg/kitfoxgames

DF Suggestions / Re: Children Should Haul when Work Detail is Limited

Yeah, that sounds like it makes sense for children chores to override the “only selected do this” setting.

Native Linux version seems to be working now, but thorough testing is quite difficult, so look forward to that. Mac version will need a setup to compile on.

Did you fix the concurrency issues? Are you getting a Mac mini or a MacBook Air? If you want to save some money, you might consider buying a Apple refurbished model. They look new, and I think they include the same warranty as if they were new. https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/mac

If you get a laptop, I recommend getting a model that includes MagSafe, such as the M2 MacBook Air. That feature has saved me a lot. I often forget to unplug it or accidentally put some force on the plug.

Is being able to more easily project the map on a sphere worth making the world more confusing? If an npc tells me to go East, it seems like it could be confusing to figure out which way East is. And then the direction I would need to travel to go East could change in the middle of a journey.

Will the map shift left and right to keep centered on the player? If not, bring around the 180° meridian would be confusing.

DF Suggestions / Re: Mining vs. quarrying

Being able to guarantee usable stone sound nice. Would mining still have a chance to produce usable stone? It’s convenient getting it from mining- especially at the start of a new fortress when you need tables, chairs, and mugs, etc.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Minimum Height for Underground Forest?
« on: March 07, 2023, 08:13:10 pm »
I think it depends on the mushroom. From what I understand, any mushroom with "cap" in it's name (i.e. Black-cap, Goblin-cap, Nether-cap, and Tower-cap) will only yield 1 log, and there's no point in a room more than 2 Z-levels high for these trees.

I think other mushrooms might be worth waiting for them to grow taller:
  • Blood thorn (cavern level: 3) - max trunk height: 5 Z levels
  • Spore tree (cavern levels: 2 & 3) - max trunk height: 5 Z levels
  • Fungiwood (cavern levels: 1 & 2) - max trunk height: 8 Z levels
  • Tunnel tube (cavern levels: 2 & 3) - max trunk height: 8 Z levels

Even large language models (ChatGPT etc.) don't understand what the text "means", it just imitates what humans have written previously.

I don't know if that's true or not. I was impressed seeing AI try to convert English instructions into Minecraft commands.

DF Suggestions / Re: Mercury in vanilla?

Mercury moats sound cool. How will you get it down to ~9920 to freeze it? It’d be funny to trade away Mercury weapons and then watching them leak off their wagon as it leaves. Scoop it back up, freeze it, make new weapon with it, and sell them again to the next group of traders.

There goes the plan for placing artifacts behind glass walls.

DF Suggestions / Re: the upcoming Mac support
« on: March 07, 2023, 03:54:04 am »
And there's likely a few 3rd-party utilities for the Mac version of Dwarf Fortress that are still only available in 32-bit.
Do you have any in mind? I can't think of any recent utilities that provide native 32-bit-only binaries for macOS.

No, and I couldn’t find any in fricy’s MacNewbie pack:

 * soundSense - Java
 * Retina Display Menu - 64-bit
 * Quickfort Converter - supports both 64-bit and 32-bit computers
 * DwarfFamily - Java
 * DF Designator - Java
 * Chromafort - Java
 * Armok Vision 5.2.0f1 - supports both 64-bit and 32-bit computers
 * Announcement Window - supports both 64-bit and 32-bit computers.

I'm not an expert in this stuff, but I thought maybe it only mattered for certain buildings, like trade depots, bridges, furnaces, and wells.

This list of buildings comes from this page: https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Mason

DF Suggestions / the upcoming Mac support
« on: February 27, 2023, 07:56:49 pm »

1. Should the Mac port of the game be an Intel app, Apple Silicon app, or Universal/both?:

Obviously a Universal app that supports both would be ideal, but if I had to pick one, I think Apple Silicon would be better. We're just over 50 months removed from the first release of Apple Silicon Macs, and they already have the majority of the Mac marketshare according to the most recent Steam hardware survey. They seem to be gaining about a percentage point every month.

If you made it an Intel app, it should be able to be emulated on the current Apple Silicon Macs with Rosetta 2, but this would only delay the need for an Apple Silicon build since Apple is unlikely to keep Rosetta 2 around forever. And wouldn't it be cool to see how well a native Apple Silicon build could perform compared to an AMD64 build?

2. What should the target minimum required operating system version be?:

If Dwarf Fortress will only support Apple Silicon, this is kind of a moot point, since they only support 3 versions of macOS so far, and I think XCode automatically will compile builds that will support the latest 2 OS versions by default, which will probably cover like all Apple Silicon Mac users according to the Steam survey.

If you decide to support Intel Macs, then you might possibly consider supporting older versions of macOS. The current Mac build of Dwarf Fortress supports Mac OS 10.6 Leopard and later. I do not expect the upcoming Mac build to support such old operating systems, though. I think macOS 10.14 Mojave would be a good choice of target for the minimum supported version. Mojave is the second-oldest operating system supported by the latest version of XCode, so with Apple's pattern Mojave should still see support in the next version of XCode as well. Additionally, Mojave is the last version of macOS to support older 32-bit apps, so this version may have some holdouts from people who have some 32-bit app(s) they love and reluctant to upgrade. And there's likely a few 3rd-party utilities for the Mac version of Dwarf Fortress that are still only available in 32-bit. Fortunately, Dwarf Therapist is 64-bit, but I'm not very familiar with the other utilities. (Disclaimer: My primary laptop is on Mojave, so very biased here.)

Percentage of Users on different versions of macOS as of 2023 January:
macOS versionPct. of Mac users
13 - Big Sur (2022)>39.9%
12 - Monterey (2021)>29.1%
10.15 - Catalina (2019)>5.8%
10.14 - Mojave (2018)>2.7%
10.13 - High Sierra (2017)>3.5%
(Note: Steam hardware survey doesn't provide complete data and only shows top results of very specific versions, so percentages may be higher than what can be counted in the public survey results.)

P.S. - if you need someone to test if Mac development builds will run, I have several Macs lying around running various versions of Mac OS. I can even borrow an M2 Mac to test something for some quick tests.

There's already AI in Dwarf Fortress. I think OP was talking about adding Neural Network AI.

Vettlingr's Tileset

I'm not sure how long it will take to finish. I think it's kind of a big project to make a complete graphics pack after the graphics overhaul update.
