Title: No Seige
Post by: MuseOD on November 13, 2012, 04:18:49 pm
Guys, I have 97 dorfs in the fort, and there hasn't been a seige yet. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have goblins at all?

Yep. Caught two of the buggers. Thieves, and all that. Executed them both.

What's your fort's value like and how much have you exported?

327K value, 20K exported
Oh, here come some migrants.
There probably will be a seige soon.

Get as much exported wealth as possible. Keep your fingers crossed and blades sharp.

For me, I know the ambushes and sieges are coming when I start getting 4-5 thieves/snatchers at once.  My entryway is a three tile wide ramp so once the first one gets discovered the fleeing dwarves tend to uncover the next 4 and there's lots of running around and interrupt spam for a bit.

Ambushes/Sieges tend to start the next season after I get that.

Make a lot of wealth. If you're getting snatchers, then goblins have access to you, it's probably you don't have enough fancy things for them to want to start a-stabbing on you. Distance seems to be a factor too in how long it takes for them to arrive.

You need more shinnies. 327k is a very, very low value for a fort of this size.

Just to compare, I usually have over 500k by time I hit the 50 pop cap I have set, and closer to 1m by time it's all stabilized. Though it's mostly cloth products :D

I get chains of huge sieges if my industries are constantly active, cloth with dye and glass industries are very good because ropes and trap parts are valuable enough! Granted I've not been running them as hard in 34.xx version, and still get occasional sieges past 80 pop.

Well, now I'm 450K with 151.

I usually don't get sieges until my wealth hits the 2 mil mark, with around 100 population. Wealth is, as said before, a huge factor in when, how often, and how hard you get siege'd.

I believe it's how much wealth you gained is how sieges are determined, however I can't really say for sure since they can be hugely variable, depending on distance and the civ's mood. I does get more frequent and bigger sieges if I'm cracking out megabucks of goods.

If you want really fast wealth growth, I suggest starting a huge cloth industry up. Doesn't even need dye but it helps a bit :D

Also how are you getting such small wealth? Playing aboveground fortress?

Embark within range of a necromancer tower.  You'll get a siege pretty quick.  My first one was in the Spring of the second year.  ~40 dwarves, literally no exported value.

If you have human and elven traders. Try to provoke them. If a human law-giver arrives, kill him and they will siege you.
