Title: Dwarfs!?
Post by: PwndJa on March 05, 2011, 11:03:45 pm
Dwarfs is a single-player casual game in which you guide your Dwarfs to mine the caves around your home base, find the gold, minerals and treasure - and try and keep them out of trouble! Dwarfs just tend to keep digging, following only their lust for more gold. So they will dig into water and lava, threatening your home. If that wasn't enough, they keep finding all sorts of nasty little monsters that have to be dealt with too. The player can build walls, dynamite holes in the floor, or turn earth to stone in an effort to prevent disaster. But in the end, success or failure will depend on the player's skill at directing his ever-growing army of dwarfs! And if the basic modes aren't enough, there is a complete sandbox, where you can create your own challenges - and a "Defend the Town Hall" mode where clearing out waves of enemies becomes the biggest challenge.

It seems as if Dwarf Fortress has inspired an Xbox arcade developer to create something quite similar, albeit much more casual and suited to people that like arcade style games.

The similarities are striking.

TBH, that looks kind of horrendously boring and annoying -- seems like the player is more of a babysitter for the dwarfs instead of a commander.

Yeah it's been argued over before: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=64007 . I do appreciate your summary of it though, it sums up the game pretty well.

I think the overall consensus is that it's fun for a bit but was mostly a high score hunt at the time. I haven't tried the other modes though, just the stuff that was in the demo when that first thread came through.

As far as I now, it will become P2P but for now is free. Of course, unless I'm wrong.

I like it, and for once am glad to see a game sorta kinda like DF, but not enough to be obtrusive, or something as stupid as Khazahd.

The only real relation to DF it has is that there are dwarves that dig.  I had a lot of fun playing this on the show floor at PAX, and while it certainly isn't the most complicated game ever, it was a pretty fun time waster.

From looking at the video, It gives me the feeling of a flashgame you play because you dont have anything else to do.

i think it's a time waster like Atom Zombie Smasher.

It looks fun and, aside from DF, also similar to Dungeon Keeper.

EDIT: In the video, that guy's fortr-I mean, tunnel design was just asking for trouble :P

EDIT2: Looking at the website, I came across this comic...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Interadesting...

Haha nice comic. The last time I played a demo the dwarves just kind of dig tunnels semi-randomly. You could guide them if I remember, but the "tunnel design" tends to be an obstacle to overcome rather than a means to overcoming other obstacles.

Just wanted to add that Tripwire Interactive (Killing Floor, Red Orchestra, RO2, publishers of "The Ball") are publishing this game, so you can feel pretty decent about where you're money is going. They're one of my favorite "mainstream" indie dev houses/publishers.

"The Steam servers are currently too busy to handle your request. Please try again in a few minutes."

It's been this way for the past hour and a half.

Fucking great.

Well I just played the demo it was quite alright.
While the gameplay has nearly nothing to do with Dwarf Fortress, I would be surprised if the Game Designer wasn't inspired by DF.
The gameplay is quite interesting for a few rounds but then it got boring.

I think this pretty much sums it up.

But hey, the demo is free to play so go check it out for yourself, you might like it more than me.

Part of the description from the steam page:

Dwarfs!? offers an addictive, fast paced arcade-like experience, with plenty of difficulty levels and game modes to play, in the tradition of great games such as "Lemmings" and "Dwarf Fortress."

So it does mention it was inspired from Dwarf Fortress.

Does the game have a Z-axis, or is it purely flat? It might be worth a look either way.

Its all flat.  Its not really like DF at all other than it has dwarfs and magma.  So far it seems fun, but I've only played through the tutorial.

I cannot personally get into it but from the little of the demo I played I can say it is nothing like Dwarf Fortress and honestly aside from having a sorta similar look it doesn't even share that much in common (aside from features that aren't Toady's like dwarfs and lava, etc).

Its no doubt partially inspired by it, but it plays radically differently.

As for me the OCD side of me just wont' let me like how your miners keep digging up everything until it looks chaotic, if you could keep them from doing that I think I'd like it a lot more, but as it is I cannot say its for me.. That said my issues are personal preference, its hardly a 'bad' game.

I played it, it is fun. But don't expect it to be a DF like game because it isn't. The Yogscast has made a video about it. Pretty fun, you can see Simon playing part of the tutorial (after getting flooded 3 times or so :P)

It's pretty fun, and they do mention dwarf fortress in the description on steam.

I'm not sure I fully like the movement yet, and it's pretty simply so far. But it is pretty fun, nice little coffeebreak game.
