Title: crayon art rewards-donation drive to illustrate the wiki
Post by: Askot Bokbondeler on February 15, 2011, 02:25:20 am
This isn't mine, instead it's my crayon reward which just came this weekend! Hooray!!!
Budda Bronze Colossus Flicks Away Annoyance:
(http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7155/dfcrayonrewardlarge.jpg) (http://img217.imageshack.us/i/dfcrayonrewardlarge.jpg/)
It's more colorful IRL, I'm not good with the retouching and all....

so, you guys know that when donating to toady you can either request an ascii art reward or a crayon masterwork, right?
upon seeing toady's rendition of a bronze colossus, and how much it differed from my own, this idea sprang to my mind

what if we started donating to toady for renditions of df's creatures and plants, in a manner similar to the creature sponsorship? we could then post these pictures on the wiki, on each creature's page...
this could overload toady with work, so we should regulate this initiative in some way, and a minimum donation amount should be stipulated, even if this ammount was to be reached by several people's donations combined...

but before we start pouring money onto the unsuspecting toad, let's decide how many creature's we'll sponsor per month and how much will we pay for each

EDIT:eh, i went ahead and donated 25 for a crundle doing something crundly

What if he starts messing with us and changing depictions of creatures.

I had a similar idea and started collecting my own DF Crayon Art Bestiary a while ago... I have the following beasts:
Blizzard Man
Cyclops
Foul Blendec
Goblin & Beak Dog
Gorlak
Grimeling
Snakeman
Strangler

"he he he"

I had a similar idea and started collecting my own DF Crayon Art Bestiary a while ago...

cool, that gives us somewhat of a head start, if you're willing to share and have a way to digitize them

----------------

well, as long as this doesn't start to get out of hand, perhaps we can live without establishing a limit. i'll update the op with a list of the creatures we already have, i'll include yours if you don't mind, applegren

I could digitize them at the library and I had planned to share them eventually anyway. So sure. :) You forgot to put your Bronze Colossus into the list of creatures we have already!

Hehe, this is an awesome idea.

It doesn't matter much if Toady changes the descriptions later, these are still colorful renditions.

I've got a drunk dwarf around somewhere and I'd happily donate for a dragon.

Absolutely you can use mine. I think this is a great idea with the only caveat being that I wouldn't want Toady getting swamped or feeling put upon. It's my understanding that while you can request a crayon reward and while it will be at least somewhat Dwarf Fortress related Toady gets to draw what Toady feels like drawing. As someone who has done, many years ago, a bit of professional illustration I can assure you that drawing what you want is definitely different than drawing a request. Also I wouldn't want Toady to feel that we were somehow equating his work with 'that's how it is'.

All that being said, I love seeing other crayon rewards and reading other peoples ASCII rewards.

I, too, plan on donating again when I can. It was a great experience.

I have a crayon art that is the dwarf fortress food web from when elves first became cannibals.  Includes an elf(overdramatic teeth), a dwarf, a rat, a cat, a plump helmet, a dragon, and a carp.   The dwarf may or may not be drunk...He's holding a mug, so probably just a crafter.

Unfortunately I do not own a scanner.  Actually yes I do have a scanner, but I won't be able to use it til tomorrow.  I'll see about scanning it then.

My art reward does not depict a creature, but it does depict Tarn and Threetoe.

This was all by specific request. I was well pleased.

The Dwarf Fortress Food Web.  Shrunk from over 2000x2500 ish

(http://img.ie/images/767b9.png) (http://img.ie/)

My scanner modified the image slightly.  (It apperantly decided the dragon's light green is brown) but it's close enough.  And I couldn't get it to get that color right.

i dunno... we probably should, as the wiki is mainly informative and should tell the readers what the creatures actually look like ingame

Quote
I don't think it would take too much extra time -- we usually spend one day per month over at my grandma's place drawing them up.  Lately, Zach has been drawing them and I've been coloring them

I just got this a week ago, but I had donated/made my request before you guys had started this thread.

These are a pair of specific female dwarves from my first fort, the mayor and bookkeeper from 40d, with some of their favorite things.  (Cats and goblets for "Sunny" the mayor, and rings and red-winged blackbirds for "Luna" the bookkeeper.  Sunny was the happy-go-lucky personality "people-person", while Luna was a dour but intelligent manager woman-behind-the-throne, hence the difference in their faces.)

Spoiler: Large image (click to show/hide)

Makes the fortress seem like a much more cozy place, doesn't it? I swear I've played bridge with these two before.

I break into a cheesy grin every time I see this picture.

Seems to be a toss up  My dragon pic doesn't.  But from the differences in the signature Passive's is probably newer than mine.  So it could be either

A)  They used to not, but Toady and Zach changed their minds.
B) They still aren't sure.
C) They want them to have wings, but with current flier pathfinding oddities they are waiting til they can pathfind right.
or D) They plan on that being one of the things that the RNG decides when they implement the slightly randomized dragons.

Personally one of the only modifications I made to the vanilla raws was the addition of wings to dragons so I prefer Passive's version myself.

Not to go all Tolkien on everyone but he had a pretty good system for dragons where many things, like fire breathing and wings, were optional rather than required. Glaurung, for example, was the first fire breather (and even then, more like a smoker) but couldn't fly. Ancalagon the Black could fly, and was the strongest dragon ever, but couldn't breath fire. Smaug, who could fly *and* breath fire, was the mightiest dragon of the Third Age but there were also Cold Drakes (non-fire breathers) to the far north. Only one was named, Scatha the Worm I think? Not sure of the spelling.

Anyway, the upshot of all this blather is the idea that both depictions are right.

 :)

Tolkien's dragons were also created by an evil god.  So their form would have followed from their creator's whims.
They were also all evil.  None of that "free will" stuff us humans get.

Rise from the grave!

*Cough* Ahem.  Anyway.
I did (finally) donate and get a crayon drawing of a dragon, just like I said I would months and months ago.  Behold my shitty photo of it:

Taken with my cell phone and totally forgot to rotate it.  I'll have to break out the scanner tomorrow and do the picture justice.  In any case, we have empirical proof that dragons in DF are of the Oriental variety, not the Occidental, although they do harbor their western cousins' penchant for burninating the countryside.

I'm a bit confused about these different crayon threads, but since this already has been bumped...
If nothing else I would like to share this here where people might appreciate it :)

The scanner added some noise, but I fixed most of it. Edit: and I see now that some minor details and colors are lost.

Didn't see a clearly better place to post, so.. necro it is.

I don't think I ever posted this crayon art I received in 2015:

And in case the previous reply I made needs a fresh link, this one should last longer. It's from 2011:

It's a shame to see lots of dead links in this thread. I hope the pictures have been archived by others. I thought there was a dedicated page on the wiki for this stuff but I can't seem to spot it.

There is a page for the ASCII art rewards (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/ASCII_art_reward), but nothing for the crayon art, as far as I know. There are a bunch spread out on the wiki, but I don't think even all of the ones from this thread can be found there, which is a shame since some like the crundle and the frog demon have no official art for them as these are lost.

Your 2011 request has made its way to the mount article (https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Mount), as of today. It had a boring human on it before, so thank you for this necro! :) Do you recall what the motive for the other one is? A titan, or perhaps a dragon?

I'll post mine here as well even though I started another topic about it.

In the final round of crayon drawings, I requested a picture of a draltha (because no official picture existed) in the hopes I could add it to the wiki. When I received it, though, I began to suspect (and eventually confirmed via asking in FotF (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=180143.msg8424453#msg8424453)) that the picture I got depicted a drunian instead. A little disappointing, but the picture is still very good.

I don't have a wiki account or any experience editing it, so would it be possible to have this added as an illustration to the page for drunians?

Picture is here. (https://i.imgur.com/XoTrClD.jpeg)

Here is a giant eagle crayon art I received way back in 2010, in case it might be useful.

Hopefully it will end up here: https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Giant_eagle (https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Giant_eagle)
