Life Advice / Replacement for BoingBoing?
« on: March 03, 2016, 03:40:25 pm »
I used to really like the BoingBoing website, but the quality has gone down so far lately that I don't really want to read it any more.  Anybody else happen to know a good "Random ass cool stuff" aggregator that has RSS feeds?

Other Games / The Perfect Gaming Client
« on: April 26, 2015, 12:23:04 pm »
Steam has been kinda going downhill lately, so I figured I'd describe the perfect gaming client/distributor from my point of view as a gamer.  This doesn't exist, but I wish it did.

Features it will have:

- Accounts.  You can add accounts from multiple vendors(steam, gog, greenman, origin) and it will seamlessly allow you to download/play games by downloading/executing from that account.

- Game library.  I actually really like how steam organizes things (Categories, favourites) in a nice list, so I'd be perfectly content for this to be the same visually.  If you own the same game from multiple vendors, you can either right-click to choose to install/play from a specific vendor, or you can set your preferred vendor so it does it automatically(So I could tell it to prefer using gog, then origin, then steam, then greenman.

- Wishlist.   This is actually one of my favourite steam features, but we can make it better!  It will show deals for all the major vendors, and you can set it to notify you if a game on your wishlist reaches a certain price point or %off.

- Sales.  There will be a sales page that lets you browse all the current sales for the major vendors.  By default games you already own will not be shown, and the sales are filterable and sortable.

- Store Browser.  No-frills way to browse games you might like from various vendors.

- Game Overlay.   In steam you can shift-tab to get the overlay.  It has a clock, a web browser, and a bunch of pointless junk.  Get rid of the pointless junk, add a music player & video recorder.  Set up something so you can stream easily(I know/care nothing about streaming, but I assume people would like this).  Have the option to show the current FPS/Time while playing a game.

- Community Features.  Eh... The usual screenshots, reviews, friends(and group chat/voice group chat), profile.

Features it will NEVER have:

- An "Inventory".
- Advertisements
- Recommended/advertised games/sales.
- Microtransactions.
- Any monetized features at all.  Its just a fricken gaming client.

Editted for clarity a bit.

Life Advice / Synced folders, clouds?
« on: February 10, 2015, 01:20:03 pm »
I'm thinking about doing a better job of organizing my files on my home computer.

I'd like to be able to have a bunch of folders in windows explorer that are synced/backed up offsite in a semi-invisible manner.  I'd like those files to be encrypted client side, and stored in an encrypted state on the offsite storage.  Ideally I'd like it to be pretty easy to use.

I think dropbox might have something like this, but the encryption is important to me.  I don't want the NSA to find all my ISIS-grandma porn.   :P

I'm also open to software I can run on a server.  I've got a web-server I can use if it comes down to it.

Does something like this exist?  Any recommendations?

Life Advice / Upper back pain
« on: January 26, 2015, 06:05:47 pm »
Well, I know the internet is the worst place to go for medical advice, but I'm giving it a shot anyway.

Over the past year or two I've been having a lot of days where my back/spine is getting pretty sore.  It seems to slowly be getting worse, and is probably posture related.  Does anybody have any advice on fixing or preventing future back-pain, or am I just fast-tracking my way to old-age?   :P

Other Games / Any good PC gaming news websites?
« on: October 01, 2014, 10:35:34 am »
PCGamer recently reformatted their website to be incomprehensible to me, so I'm looking for a new website to get my pc gaming news from.  At the moment I'm down to just Rock Paper Shotgun.  Anybody have a good suggestion?

I'd like:
1)  A linear format of posts, like rockpapershotgun.
2)  No (or minimal) console news.  Just PC stuff.

Creative Projects / Levi makes an aquaponics rig
« on: June 08, 2014, 01:06:18 pm »
Figured I'd post about this, as I'm kinda proud of what I've made so far.  The basic idea of aquaponics is that you pump dirty-fish water from your fishtank up to your plants which eat the nutrients and clean the water.  The clean water is then dropped back down into the fish tank.  This removes the need for filters or aeration, and you get to eat your fish and your plants.

So after my plants out on my deck have died horribly for a third year in a row, I decided I wanted to try to grow vegis with aquaponics instead.  I've been working on building this since.  Its still not quite ready yet(I should be getting the hydroton grow bed media sometime this week), but I'm far enough along to show it off.  :)

Pictures below:

Older pictures:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The growlights I built out of an aluminium sheet, a LED controller, and a bunch of 3 wat leds(mostly red ones, but a few blue and white ones as well).  They operate on a timer that turns them on at 9:00AM and off at 9:00PM.

The rest of it was made out of random containers, pvc tubes and fittings and a table bought at Canadian Tire.  I'm hoping the table doesn't collapse under the weight of it all, but I think it'll probably be okay.

Right now I'm waiting for the growbed media(hydroton) to arrive.  Then I can start the system up and let it run for a while to normalize the system.  Then I'll get a bunch of fish(probably goldfish) and start growing some vegis!

I'll post some more pictures once things have started growing.  :)

Anyway, its been a fun project and I've learned a lot from it.  I've always been pretty incompetent when it comes to building things, so this has been a great experience.

Life Advice / Alternative to soldering?
« on: May 18, 2014, 08:41:23 pm »
So, I need to attach a bunch of wires to a bunch of led inputs (looks like this), but I despise soldering.  I'm just awful at it.  My hands are way to shaky and clumsy, and I can never get the wires to attach to the inputs and I'm afraid that because I spend so much time trying to attach the wires that the heat from my iron will bust the leds.   >:(

So I need an alternative that is a bit easier.  Any suggestions would be helpful!  I was considering using blue sticky-tack, but figured I'd check here first in case somebody knows a reason why I shouldn't do that, or has a better idea.

Save me Bay 12, your my only hope!   :P

Life Advice / Selling a large collection of MTG cards, advice?
« on: April 07, 2014, 01:57:53 pm »
I'm thinking of selling my old MTG cards as I don't really use them any more and they take up a fair bit of space.  I was thinking of selling the whole thing as one big set of cards(between 3000-4000 cards), but I'm not really sure how to price things, in particular for the more common stuff.  I can find prices of some of my high-price cards no problem, but trying to figure out how much my "Dark Rituals" and such is kinda hard.

Right now I've been working on making a list of everything I've got.  Does anybody have any advice on estimating the collections worth?

I've mostly got cards from

Revised/4th edition(with some random unlimited edition cards floating around in there)
Legends
Dark
Fallen Empires
Homelands
Ice Age
Alliances
With a bit of Mirage and Visions.

I've also got some Antiquities and Arabian nights, but not much and mostly common stuff.

Creative Projects / Levi learns game making with Unity
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:18:31 pm »
I don't usually make posts like this, but I had an idea that I wanted to run by people before I get started.  About a week ago I decided to try to teach myself to use the Unity engine to make games, as I've been spending way too much time playing games and I've been in the mood to do something a bit more creative.  To my surprise, its been going rather well!

I've been making a simple 2d running game where you constantly move forward and need to jump over pits and dodge things while collecting powerups, while being chased by an enemy.  Its nothing complicated but its helped me understand the engine, and I've made so much progress in such a short time that its boosted my confidence to the point that I'm thinking of making another "not too ambitious game" once I finish this one up.

My idea is to make a top-down advance wars style turn based strategy game where you attempt to take over a dungeon.  Units will be things like warrior, cleric, archer, troll, etc.  The graphics will be simple because I'm useless at art, I was thinking of making it using the oryx roguelike tiles.  The second screenshot in the link is how the graphics would probably look.  I'd like to make it both singleplayer and multiplayer(although I haven't tried out the unity networking stuff yet).

That is all probably a month away before I get started, but I wanted to see if that kind of game appeals at all to people?  Would the lo-fi graphics be too big of a turn off?  Is a strategy game set in a dungeon too weird?

Life Advice / Encrypted cloud mounted filesystem solutions?
« on: November 13, 2012, 01:28:43 pm »
So, I have a quest, and would like advice if anybody happens to be knowledgeable in this area.  I've been slowly trying to increase my personal computing security and have been making good progress in general.

My current goal, is to have a locally encrypted mountable filesystem that I can use for permanent storage.

Ideally it would:
1)  Be external to my computer.  Something like a cloud system or something I can somehow integrate with my unix webserver.  (which I don't have root access, but have a fair bit of freedom on).
2)  Mountable as a filesystem from my windows machine.
3)  Support a high level of encryption.
4)  Be semi-portable in case I ever want to move it somewhere else.
5)  Encryption should happen client side, as I don't want to trust a third party.

I'm going to be looking around for an ideal solution, but if anybody happens to know easy ways to set this up I'd love to hear it.  :)

Creative Projects / To catch a mouse
« on: September 28, 2012, 11:44:49 am »
So, my apartment has a mouse living in it.  I've seen him out of the corner of my eye a few times previously, and figured he was just wandering in from one of the other apartments.  Then one day I saw him pop out of a closet, run around my computer chair and then run back to the hallway closet.  I investigated the closet and found mouse droppings inside.  He's apparently living in there.

I don't want to simply clean the closet, because the mouse will probably just run off and come back later(And probably be happy I cleaned his home).   I don't want to set a mousetrap, because the little guy is freaking adorable and I don't want to kill it.

So I devised a trap to catch the mouse.

A plastic bowl, a paper towel tube, and a piece of cardboard.   I taped the tube to the bowl to allow a path to the top, and then loosely attached a piece of cardboard to the end of the tube like a little diving board.  Ideally the mouse would walk along the diving board, and it would collapse and the mouse would fall in.

Day 1:
I read that mice like peanut butter, so I put a little peanut butter at the start of the tube, at the end of the tube, in the bowl, and on the diving board.  Trap was placed at a corner of the closet door, in hopes that the mouse would try to keep to the dark corners.

Day 2:
No result.  I added some raisins and cheerios to the bowl, and put a tiny piece of cheddar cheese at the top of the tube.

Day 3:
Noticed that the crumb of cheddar was missing, but everything else was untouched.  Could this be a classic stereotypical mouse?  I put a slice of Havarti cheese in the bowl itself.

Day 4:
The whole slice of cheese was gone, but no mouse!  Not only is this mouse a unashamed stereotype, but its apparently able to escape my trap with ease!  Did it feast on the cheese entirely and then escape, or did it manage to drag the Havarti off to its closet lair?

A new trap is constructed.  No fancy diving boards or peanut butter smears this time.  A larger metal bowl, which should be harder to get a grip on is used.  The tube is attached to the top as before, and a large piece of cheddar is placed at the bottom of the bowl.  And I've added a secret touch to prevent any escape.  At the bottom of the bowl is a small pool of olive oil, which should make his little adorable grippy feet unable to climb anything.  Mwahahaha.

Day 5:
Mouse didn't take my bait.  Maybe he's in a food coma from the slice of Havarti from yesterday?  Maybe he realizes that jumping into a metal bowl for a piece of food might not be the best idea?  Maybe he detests the smell of olive oil?  These are questions I will never know the answer too.

I added a small platform from a piece of paper and tape at the end of the tube overhanging the bowl, and put a tiny bit of Havarti on the end of it.  Hopefully he will go for it, and the paper will collapse landing him in my olive oil trap!  We will see what tomorrow brings, but time is running out.  My cruel and inhumane roommate has started talking of setting actual lethal mouse traps.  If I don't manage to catch before he overcomes his inherent laziness, it may be too late for the little fella.

Day 6:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Still no result!  I think he's to clever to just jump into a metal bowl full of oil.  Thankfully, I've watched enough cartoons to know the next stage of traps.  A pit trap!

So I assemble my trap:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Okay, maybe its not foolproof.  I like to think the mouse will step on the tissue, the tissue will start sliding in and take the mouse with it.  No idea if it'll actually work that way, he might just nimbly bounce away as it starts falling in.

Day 7:  Gasp!  It turns out my nefarious and lazy roommate isn't as lazy as I thought!  Turns out he bought and set up a bunch of mouse traps a few days ago without letting me know!  Thankfully, none of his traps have been triggered yet.  Sadly, neither has mine.

I haven't seen the mouse in a few days now, I'm starting to wonder if he got wise that we were on to him and fled to another apartment.

Life Advice / iTunes questions.
« on: September 04, 2012, 11:15:04 pm »
Sooo...  I'm thinking of starting to use iTunes, but I have a bunch of questions about how it works.  My only experience with digital downloads is mostly with Steam, which I mostly use because I'm not too scared of losing my game collection.  I've been reluctant to start other digital purchases like music and comics, partly because it seems expensive, but mostly because I'm not as confident about how it works and what I might be giving up.

1)  I'm guessing I can buy individual songs on iTunes, but I'd love confirmation.

2)  What do I get after I purchase a song, an MP3 file?  I'd like to be able to play it and put it where ever I like.  This is a dealbreaker for me if I can't move things around to my mp3 player.

3)  Like with steam, will I always have access to the music I purchase?  Is there any way I can lose my music that I should be aware of?

4)  Are their good alternatives to iTunes?  If so, I'd love to know about them.

5)  Does iTunes ever have sales?

5)  Anything else I should know?

Other Games / Awesomenauts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CJET-NYGJk

Website:  http://www.awesomenauts.com/
Steam Site:  http://store.steampowered.com/app/204300/

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I started playing this over the weekend, and its been a lot of fun so I figured I'd share a bit.  Awesomenauts is a 2d platformer Moba-style game currently on Steam.  Now, normally when I see the word Moba my eyes instantly glaze over and I look for something more interesting to read, but the cartoony style + platformer managed to convince me to look into this game a bit.

It has no microtransactions, and the gameplay essentially involves two teams of 3 players trying to destroy the enemy turrets that are blocking the path to the enemies energy core(or something).  Destroy the energy core and you win the game.  The turrets will eat your face off if you fight them directly though, so you need to stand behind and defend little team-coloured robots that will attract the turret's gunfire.  This will work great until gecko with a knife or a purple girl on a surfboard will come along and murder you.  :)

It has less characters than other Mobas, but that probably means its a bit more balanced.  The characters are:

Clunk:  A big hardy robot that can take a lot of hits and has the ability to explode, doing a little damage to itself and a lot of damage to anyone else caught in the radius.  Works well with Voltar it seems.

Coco Nebulon:  Purple alien girl on a surfboard.  I don't quite understand how she plays, but I do know that almost every time I fight her I die horribly.

Derpl Zork:  Mentally slow slug-like alien in a powerful mech.  The mech can turn itself into a turret.  I don't know much about him either.

Froggy G:  Rapper Frog!  He has a fair bit of mobility and a powerful stun/dash attack.

Leon Chameleon:  Stealth jerk who shanks you when you least expect it.  :P  Not only can he turn invisible, but his melee attack does a LOT of damage and he's pretty quick.  Also he has a tongue-grab attack that pulls you towards him.

Sheriff Lonestar:  This is the cowboy I've been playing so far.  He carries some powerful dynamite and has a holographic bull that can push people back.

Voltar the Omniscient:  Psychic 3-eyed alien healer.  He can also summon more bots and keep them alive pretty well.  This guy is amazing to have around when assaulting a tower or when you need some healing.

Yuri:  Cosmonaut Monkey!  Apparently he's pretty hard to play.  He can fly, shoot lasers and drop mines.  I haven't fought him yet, but he's pretty handy to have around when I'm expecting a backstab from Leon and Yuri is protecting me with a bunch of mines.

Gnaw:  *new*  A gross toxic beast of some kind.  I don't know anything about him yet.

Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun with it so far, and the 2d platformer style appeals way more to me than traditional Moba games.

Other Games / Levi's Poetry Gaming Giveaway
« on: August 15, 2012, 12:12:19 pm »
Hi, I decided to try to try out one of these giveaway things.  :)  I bought a bunch of extra games that I really enjoyed during the steam summer sale on cheap, as I think good games deserved to be played.

The Games:
- Toki Tori
Toki Tori is a fun, cheerful puzzler involving a giant chicken trying to recover its eggs(or someones eggs anyway).  Starts off pretty easy, but starts to get difficult towards the end.  I quite enjoyed it.

- Super Meatboy
A hard platformer!  Best played with a controller if you have one.  This was a game that I didn't think I would actually even get close to finishing, but it was so much fun that I persisted until I did.  Its got a ton of user made levels and Ultra-Hard levels for masochists who love a challenge and thought that simply winning the game wasn't enough.

- Orcs Must Die
A tower-defense/third person shooter!  Frankly, this is one of my favorite games.  Everything about it is just fun.  And if you turn out to enjoy it as much as I do, Orcs Must Die 2 is out now.  :)

- Space Chem
Another Puzzler!  Less cheerful and more engineery that Toki Tori.  This is the only game I'm giving away that I have NOT finished.  It gets ridiculously hard on the later levels, and whenever you finish a level you can't help but feel like you just did something amazing.

- Amnesia Dark Descent
A first-person horror game!  You play as a helpless amnesiac who's only power is to curl into fetal position and sob silently when faced with danger.  Its famous as a horror game, but its actually got a pretty compelling story as well.  Best played at night in the dark and in the mood to be scared.

- Space Pirates and Zombies
I don't know what genre this one is.  I don't think it has a genre.  Its a fairly long game where you get to fly around in a space ship shooting other space ships.  Its sort of hard to describe but trust me, its fun!

- Plants Vs Zombies
I'm not sure if anybody has actually not played Plants Vs Zombies before, but its a variation of a tower defense game.  Colorful, fun and you get to have a jalapeno on a lily pad in a swimming pool facing off against a zombie riding a dolphin.

- Bulletstorm
A poorly rated first person shooter!  This one is sort of out of place with the rest of these games, but I thought it was underrated and deserved a better chance.  Its very linear, but it has one of the funnest progression systems I've ever seen in a shooter.  You need money to upgrade your weapons(and purchase ammo/new weapons), and you get this money by doing skillshots.  There is a big list of skillshots you can make, and you get the most money by doing ones you haven't tried before.  The skillshots are things like "Ram an enemy to death with a hot dog cart" or "Kill an enemy while drunk on Nom juice" and "Kick an enemy and shoot him to death in mid-air".

As a warning; Bulletstorm uses Games for Windows Live, which tends to cause a lot of people problems.  Enter at your own risk! :)

The Task:
Compose a poem of at least 6 lines.  Subject and format can be whatever you like.  If you can't think of a subject, write it about the game you want.

The Rules:
Poems must be at least 6 lines.
You need steam to play any of these.
There will be 8 winners, one per game.
Only one entry per person (that means you can only get one game, choose wisely!)
State what game you want at the end.
Post here to say you want in.
No escaped lunatics.
Don't enter if you don't plan to play the game or are going to give it away to someone else.
Winners will be chosen by random draw(random.org) and contacted by PM for their email or steam ID.
Drawing will be 19th Aug(sunday) @ 1PMish PST

DF Suggestions / Too many animal men!
« on: February 20, 2012, 12:04:52 pm »
It would be nice if we could have less animal men in dwarf mode.  It starts to feel pretty silly when before I've had my first goblin raid I've fought:

Raven Men
Eagle Men
Swallow Men
Albatross Men
Osprey Men
Moon Snail Men
Cuttlefish Men
Thrip Men
Grasshopper Men
Mosquito Men
and one giant hamster.

Its like my dwarfs are living in some kind of comedy sketch world.

I mean, if these people are humanoid, shouldn't they be forming their own civilizations and such?  Or wouldn't the goblins and orcs have wiped out most of these freaks of nature?

I wouldn't mind so much if it was a small tribe of unusual animal men living in a cave somewhere on my map, but its like grand central station with all these guys running and flying over my fortress.

At the very least, the base animal should be the most common.  The Giant version of an animal should be uncommon, but occasionally show up.  The animal men version should be the rarest, not the most common.
