Creative Projects / Allee writes some stuff!
« on: December 19, 2015, 02:09:38 am »
So, I've been trying to get back into writing again, and I was going to post in the Writer's Apprenticeship, but I'm vain and self-centered, so I decided to make a thread for myself instead, just to post all of my writing and get feedback and whatnot.

Feel free to give me feedback, ideas, or just tell me I suck.

Also I will be putting trigger warnings in the spoiler titles, because I write about heavy shit sometimes, and not everybody wants to read that.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Colony RPG - Prologue: Captain's Orders
« on: September 07, 2015, 05:02:59 pm »
The year is 2357. Earth is all but a ruin. A little over 100 years ago, 15 representatives from 50 nations sent out 26 interstellar ships, equipped with the most cutting edge technology, to scour the galaxy for habitable planets. Most who volunteered for the journey knew that they would die aboard their vessel, but tht their future generations would live on to further the human race to new frontiers. You are part of the crew of the Neo Kyoto, a joint venture between the U.S., China and Japan, whose partnership created seven ships in total.

You were born on the Neo Kyoto. For most of your life, you had been taught that you would die on the Neo Kyoto, as well. All that changed a month ago when the ship made planetfall. Alpha Ceti 265, while not having a breathable atmosphere, had enough Earth-like qualities to be considered habitable, and terraforming would fix the rest in another few hundred years. It only took a week from scanning the planet to landing on it, and a month to set up the most basic infrastucture. The ship was, of course, designed to become a fully functional city once making planetfall.

Today, the blast shields opened for the first time in a month, and the sights moved many of the crew of 2500 to tears. Some had already seen the outside, but most had been stuck in the ship the whole time, never getting a chance to see the landscape that was to become their new home. The horizons were swirls of greens, blues and purples, the sky a bright blue, sun shining overhead. It was reminiscent of an Earth that even the founding crew had only read about.

At the same time, you were called by name to the captain's office. When you got there, you looked around at the fellow crewmates that had also been called. Some of them you know, some not so much. What does the captain want with all these people? It seems you're about to find out.

I'm a huge fan of the Phoenix Wright series, and playing Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright has given me a hankering for some good old fashioned Ace Attorney action, so I decided I'd do a little Let's Play.
It'll be all screenshots, with some gifs, and some music from the game. I won't do any videos, since there aren't really any big cutscenes in this one, and there will be quite a lot of transcription and fancy forum formatting, along with my commentary cut in, like so:
Get to the good part, already!

Alright, alright.
For those who don't know, Phoenix Wright is a game about being a lawyer. This might not seem all that interesting, but it tends to skip all the boring legal procedures in favor of "high stakes courtroom action!" I like to think that it's the Japanese equivalent of Law & Order. Really, it has just about enough gameplay elements to not be considered a visual novel, (and some people still consider it to be one) but I really enjoy trying to piece together each case like its own mystery novel. It's really fun to go through, and I encourage you to enjoy it with me!

Mostly, the thread will just be for game discussion and to point out details I or others might have missed. I'll try to be thorough, but I might miss a few easter eggs, and I encourage you to point them out in the thread when they come up. Other than that, !!NO SPOILERS!! No talking about anything in the game unless it has already come up, or I've skipped over it. This includes other games in the series as well, as I will likely be doing LPs of those after this one. (If I even finish it. >_<)

Also, yes, I will be doing the bonus case in the DS version. That is all.
So, without further ado:

Creative Projects / Red Dust: Interactive Fiction on Mars!
« on: May 19, 2015, 01:40:33 pm »
Hey guys, you know how I put off SLD to work on a smaller project? Well this is it! I don't have a release version yet, but as soon as I do, it's going in this thread.

In Red Dust, you play as a robot on Mars who has just gained sentience. Of course, this leaves you with many questions, and some, if not all, will be answered during the course of the game. But before you can think about those questions, you'll have to survive the harsh climate of the Martian desert. (Probably not all of them, though, like "What is life?" and "Where can I get a decent sandwich around here?") The finished product will have several different ways for the story to go, and at least 40 different ways to die. It will have a moral choice system without having that annoying moral spectrum thing other games have. I'm not very good at writing these kinds of blurbs, so this text will probably change at several points during development.

If you'd like to be a playtester, let me know! If you want to do some arting for the the game, let me know! If you have any experience with Inform and want to give me tips on how to more efficiently code this beast, definitely let me know, because I am so confused about so many things...

Life Advice / General Dating Advice Thread
« on: December 31, 2014, 04:47:37 pm »
I was posting about some stuff in GD that I feel would probably be better placed here, but I couldn't find a general thread for it in the first few pages. Given how many people come to GD with relationship problems, I feel like this thread would be needed.

First order of business:
Also trying to sleep and felt like mooching the hotel wifi for music, just remembered how much I like night core... Woot woot
I'm starting to discover how much I like glitch hop. 'S good.

Oh, in other news, a new crush appears!
I really like her and a think she's super cute, (and she doesn't even have that pesky problem of being in a position of power over me like so many other crushes) but I don't even know if she's gay. Problems and dilemmas.

Question is, how do I find out without straight up asking, "Hey, I was wondering, are you a lesbian?" Because, for one, that's rude, and also it makes it too obvious that I'm trying to hit on her or something.
Same advice I give the "woe is me 4ever2lone" crowd on here. Go talk to her, and be honest about your intentions. I don't get why people on this forum are so scared to ask, "Hey, can I ask a personal question? Are you single?" If yes, follow up with, "Would you like to grab lunch sometime? I'm available [at this time]." If not, follow up with, "Ah, I didn't realize, sorry to intrude."

Yeah, it's very forward, but don't take yourself out of an equation with anyone you're interested in. Show that you're an option and put the ball in their court.
The problem is, if she's not interested, things might get awkward after, and I still want to be her friend if I can't date her.
And here we have my problem. Any advice?

OOC Thread

Spoiler: Icon Dice (click to show/hide)

Tensions have been rising in the south. Demon attacks are becoming increasingly more common, and word is that the Great Gold Wyrm has been weakening his hold on the Abyss. A week ago, Horizon, the city of wonders, and the Archmage's home, was put under siege by demonic hordes. A powerful and firey demon calling himself Skaal leads this army, and he grows more relentless by the day. The Emperor put out a call for hired mercenaries to bolster the ranks defending the city, and for whatever reason, you all have answered it, knowing full well the risks involved.
You met in a tavern one night on the way, and as you all realized you were going the same way, you decided to travel together. The next morning you were standing in front of the large, ornate stone gates of the city, with about two dozen bowmen staring you down from atop the walls, their weapons drawn and at the ready.
A voice calls out from atop the wall, and a man in gleaming gold armor steps forth, obviously some sort of captain. "Who goes there? What business have you in Horizon? The city is under siege, and... Wait, that's right... You must be the mercenaries the Commander sent word of! There sure aren't that many of you..."

Hey guys! I'm posting this because I've been really into 13th Age lately, and I wanted to start a campaign, because I've never actually played it yet.

Oh, and I almost forgot: We're starting at level 1 with standard point buy.

Hey there! I'm sure most of you are aware of an RPG called "Vampire - The Masquerade." Well, unfortunately, VTM was discontinued in 2004, and was rebooted as Vampire - The Requiem, focusing less on Judeo-Christian mythology, and more on the ancient Romans. I'm still going to take some things from VTM that I liked, however, such as the Malk(a/o)vian Madness Network, and other aspects of certain clans/bloodlines that were left out of the reboot. In fact, most of the game will be focused on bringing back an old staple of the VTM timeline.

Character generation should be about the same, I'll just tell you if you get any extra bonuses and whatnot. For sheets, use www.myth-weavers.com with a New World of Darkness sheet. You'll all be vampires, and I'm not going to restrict clans or bloodlines, but instead of thinking of what kind of vampire you are, think more about who you were in life, before the Embrace. This campaign is going to start you fresh, just after being turned.

The game will take place in modern day Seattle. A mysterious Satanic cult has risen up, and saying its leader has a magnetic personality is an understatement. For one reason or another, you've decided to join this cult, and that reason is up to you to decide. You didn't drink the punch, though, did you?

General Discussion / The "Barnes Test" for LGBT representation
« on: May 08, 2014, 09:06:26 pm »
So a recent episode of Game Theory had me thinking about LGBT representation in video games, and I think I've come up with something. MatPat brought up Phantasmagoria 2, and he mentions how the main character, Curtis Craig, is bisexual, but is also into S&M, cheats on his girlfriend, and is a transdimensional space alien. That's not exactly good representation. But, he also failed to mention Curtis's best friend, Trevor Barnes. Trevor is a perfectly well adjusted gay man, and although he is a bit of a stereotype, not everything about him boils down to his homosexuality.

In place of the Mako Mori or Bechdel tests, I've come up with a test for LGBT representation that keeps in mind some of the issues that MatPat brought up in this latest episode. I can only think of one or two American made video games that pass this test, and one was made almost 20 years ago.
Spoiler: The Test (click to show/hide)
Using this test, we can determine that Trevor Barnes is:
1: Not universally vilified for being gay.
2: Not a villain or antagonist
3: Not reduced to having 'gay' be his only personality trait
4: Not insane/bipolar/schizophrenic
Sure, he isn't the main character, but he's well represented. His homosexuality is just a part of his personality. It doesn't define him or make him a villain.

I'd like to see this test put up against other LGBT characters. Just how many games are there that have decent representation of gay, bi, and/or trans characters?

OOC Thread

Welcome to Delamza, a small but growing trading port in the Kainal Islands. For one reason or another, you've ended up here, drinking at The Broken Mast, a rowdy little inn in the Merchant's Square. It's frequented by sailors and merchants of all kinds, and there's never a quiet moment. Forunately, Jerold, the barkeeper, likes it that way. More customers means more coin.
Some of the shadier types prefer to keep to the Rum Slum in the Slums, but Jerold still keeps hired muscle at the door just in case things get rough. Well, rougher than normal. These are sailors we're talking about.

Surprisingly, the inn has reached a relative lull in traffic at the moment. You can actually almost hear yourself think!

This is half interest check, half advertisement for an RPG I don't think many outside of the pacific northwest have heard of. I think I've learned from previous Play by Post mistakes and from playing another myself, and I'm ready to give this whole DMing thing another whirl.
Spoiler: The Setting (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: The Characters (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: The Mechanics/Magic (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: The Thread (click to show/hide)
All in all, Arrowflight is probably the P&P RPG I've had the most fun playing, and had the best stories from, especially having been an early playtester for the game. I have permission to hand out .pdfs of the main sourcebook and character sheet, but I also encourage you to buy your own copy if you can afford it. The character sheet .pdf is fully editable, and I've found that Foxit Reader seems to have a lot less problems with it than Acrobat.
There is also a magic/prayer sheet that I can give out if needed, also fully editable.
Another house rule of mine is that you don't need to roll your Lifeline randomly as long as it fits with your character's backstory. While it's perfectly fine to roll your Lifeline and build a backstory around that, I also like to have the opposite option.
Other than all that, have fun! I'll be accepting 7 players at first and possibly letting more play as time goes on.

General Discussion / The trouble with Gravity [SPOILERS]
« on: March 31, 2014, 05:38:23 am »
So I just saw the movie Gravity, and while it was very visually impressive and the music and sound design were great, the science nerd in me had quite a few problems with the whole thing. I still liked the movie, but for a movie that seems to pride itself on real world physics, it seems to get more things wrong than it gets right.

All that aside, it was a very pretty movie with a great score and nice sound design, but all those nitpicks kept me from enjoying the movie as much as I could have. Any thoughts?

I started this thread as sort of recruitment for a game project, but eventually realized I would probably be better off doing the creation myself. So this has now become more of a development log of sorts.

Shoddy design document here.

Other Games / Ocarina or Majora?
« on: December 27, 2013, 10:32:52 am »
So apparently, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely regarded as one of the best games of all time. However, most people I've asked say that they prefer Majora's Mask, so how is OoT regarded as the better game? I've never really had an interest in OoT; I played it when I was little and never really got into it. Playing it again as an adult, I've never been able to get more than halfway through before losing interest. However, I've played MM to death, and still enjoy replaying it to this day.
I've always said that everything OoT did, MM did better, right down to the opening sequence. I mean think about it: In OoT you wake up from a bad dream and everyone in your village tells you you need to go talk to some tree. That's boring. Why do I want to talk to this tree? "Well I dunno he's just a big tree that's important for some reason just go talk to him." Meanwhile in Majora's Mask, some guy comes along and steals your horse, so you chase him down through this multidimensional hole in a tree and get turned into a plant and this guy is sitting there taunting you and you get pissed off and start hunting him down. The plot hook in MM is solid. It's not some dream about a girl getting kidnapped or going to talk to a tree you don't know anything about.
I dunno, maybe I'm just biased against OoT because it never really caught my interest. I'd kind of like to hear other opinions on the subject.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Everyone is John: Mugged by an invisible man
« on: December 21, 2013, 05:20:14 am »
Hey everybody! Let's play Everyone is John!

"What is Everyone is John" you ask? Well that's a good question.

In Everyone is John, well, everyone is John, or rather, everyone plays one of John's multiple personalities. You see, John suffers from a form of DID, (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and you get to play his many alternate personas, all vying for control of his fragile psyche. I will be playing Everyone Else, which means I will be playing all of the people around John, in addition to narrating the events of the story.

"Well that's all well and good," you may be saying, "But how does one play Everyone is John?"

Players take turns controlling our protagonist, John. Each player starts with 10 Willpower, which they may bet in order to control him. Bets will be sent to me privately by PM, and if you don't send me a bet within 24 hours of the bet opening, I will assume you did not want to bet. The person betting the most Willpower loses said Willpower and takes control of John, all other players may keep the Willpower they bet. Ties are normally resolved with a die roll, but I'll be using a random number generator.
Now that you have control of John, you may be wondering what you should be doing. Well, each Personality has its own Obsession, which gives them a certain number of points when completed. The number of points awarded for each obsession depends on the difficulty of said Obsession being fulfilled. Some examples are as follows:
Spoiler: 1 point (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: 2 points (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: 3 points (click to show/hide)
As you can see there is much to choose from, but I encourage you to pick something unique and not on these lists. Once an Obsession is completed, control of John becomes up for grabs, and the player who last controlled John may even bid again, or remain in control if no players opt in. A personality will also lose control of John if he becomes unconscious in any way. The game ends if John dies, or all Personalities run out of Willpower.
Now this may sound fairly simple, but John is fairly is fairly inept when it comes to most things. However, his Personalities are even varied in their knowledge and skills. Anything that a normal human being would have even the slightest bit of difficulty doing will require a D6 roll. If the Personality controlling him at the time does not have the relevant skill, the roll must be a 6 to succeed. However, if the Personality does have the skill, the roll must only be be a 3+. Another way a player can lose control of John is by failing a roll.
A personality can have two skills, unless they spend three Willpower at the beginning of the game to get a third skill. These skills must be at least slightly specific; Skills such as "Good at everything" or "master of all things lethal" will not be tolerated. Some examples of potential skills: Dancing, Shooting, Explosives, Sneaking, Swordfighting, Expert Driver, Eating Almost Anything, Playing Video Games, Swimming, Lock Picking, etc.
As with the Obsessions, please don't feel limited to picking from this list!

"This sounds like a lot of fun!" I hear you shouting, "But how can I join in the festivities?"

Simply post in this thread! Once you have, send me a PM with your skills and your Obsession, and eventually I will call for the first bid. In any case, have fun being John!

EDIT: Oh, a couple more things:
When it is not your turn to control John, please do not post in the thread. Also, your Obsession and skills should be a secret! The rules do not forbid revealing them, but they strongly encourage you to keep them a secret until the end. This will prevent other Personalities from trying to sabotage you, and makes the game more fun in general.
