Title: Easter eggs list!
Post by: Nite/m4re on October 12, 2007, 08:34:00 pm
How about listing all easter eggs we find? Where are some I found:

In Adventure mode, checking temperature and weather:

"Being dead is cold and clammy" When you try to check temperature while dead!

"There is no sunlight when you are dead" When you check for weather while dead!

Dont forget the date: Youve lost track of time since your death

Lets not forget Scrolling too far in Fortress mode!

"Looking for home? Quite a long way yet."
and
"As you journey to the center of the world, feel free to read the death announcements of the dwarves that suffer your neglect."

Not so much an easter egg as an interesting feature I never noticed before : The Elves name every tree in their groves. Also, you can eat live worms by searcing an area carefully (to discover them).

Also, attempting to eat swamp water or mud gives you "No. Thats disgusting."

Unless you're super thirsty or hungry.

Yeah, I always thought that message was odd. If I decide I want to eat mud or swamp water, thats my damn choice. I mean, the adventurer has no problem with licking the severed limbs of my foes, but a little mud is somehow offensive?

Awesome, never knew about those two. You also get a message when trying to search for 'Electrum' from the Manager menu if you don't have the Dungeon Master (or trying to buy it on 'Embark Journey') :

Less of an Easter Egg and more of a tip: When you reclaim a fort, all features previously found are fully exposed (river/chasm/magma) and are no longer limited to only what your dwarves could see previously. I've used this once so I could plan my fort around any branches in the features.

And eat enough carrots and you will get very yellow skin.

I used to know something that gave you green skin, i think it was a vitamin deficiency or something.

It was a long time ago and I might remember a bit of, but i once moded a creature playable in adventure mode having the [FIXED_TEMP] flag and then when I checked the temperature it read something... "the temperature is what it has always been and always will be", I recall. Good times, good times. [/old mans ranting]
Title: Re: Easter eggs list!
Post by: puke on October 16, 2007, 07:44:00 pm
maybe it gave you that message because you were playing with the temperature disabled?

Interesting... *loads up Adv. Mode with temperature turned off* Nope, that does not cause the message Armok described to show up. I guess it's the creature flag that does that.

This is probably more of a bug than an easter egg... but goblins, apparently, live for centuries. Over a thousand years, in fact.

"Oversight", I would call it.  Goblins have no MAXAGE tag.
Title: Re: Easter eggs list!

That's actually a feature.  Goblins are meant to die violent deaths.

If they can live to be a thousand years old it might explain how they can learn to be badass enough snipers to send one copper arrow straight through your ☼Steel Helm☼ and split your head open.

If you go to really old goblin fortresses, some of those guys have lived literally since the beginning of time. And you smash them like eggs. It's a little anticlimactic.
Title: Re: Easter eggs list!
Post by: Capntastic on October 20, 2007, 08:44:00 pm
Like trees, every year goblins form new layers.    THousand year old goblins are full of rings, which make them fragile.
Title: Re: Easter eggs list!
Post by: Lightning4 on October 20, 2007, 10:30:00 pm
I think only the lucky ones live that long. They probably become "elders" or something and don't have to fight anymore. The rest become redshirts and go out to die at the local dwarven fortress. Maybe the survivors are the ones that become elders.

no worse then the endgame demon. not only is he older then time, but someone was forced to imprison him under a mountain, behind a wall of adamantine and he managed to strike down every single dwarf in your fortress once you breached that prison.

then you go ahead and cut him in half with a thrown -wooden ballista bolt-, or clobber him with your +steel warhammer+ which sends him flying into a wall where he blasts into pieces. yawn.

I always preferred to think that the dwarves put up a valiant fight and greatly weakened the demon. So much so that a single adventurer can strike him down and take all the glory.

Hopefully next version we get to fight him ourselves. Perhaps he's size 25, with a damblock of 50 and fire breath next version? Damn it. Now I have to mod one into current version to see how destructive it is!

EDIT: Heh, I modded one in. Nigh unstoppable. In fact, I'd say the endgame demon would have to be weaker than that, because the only way to kill the fucking thing would be to instagib its head, upper body, or lower body (since I set it so it can't bleed, doesn't need to breathe, and can't feel pain or get stunned)... and that's pretty much impossible with a damblock of 50 :P
Of course, I don't know how well it'd work against a wave of 50 dwarves, 20 of them champions, 20 more are weaponmasters, and every single dwarf has masterfully crafted adamantine armor and weapons. Dwarf forts in adventure mode are seriously weak and I never even saw any weaponmasters.

I beat the hell out of a hydra though. :P

And have the dwarves have all the skills and attributes of when they were alive. That will make it harder to kill the addy demon. Having to charge through your entire fortress of elite dwarves, nobles, workers and haulers. All with the equipment that you had produced for yourself. All that steel to kill goblins, and adamantine that you had produced to equip your adventurer will be used against you. Of course lever defenses won't be and if set up correctly could help you.

It might not be a easter egg but still quite funny imho.

If you get a quest to kill something (cyclops) and bring wave after wave of people with you, for instans drunks (that can't fight for ****) and the quest target keeps on killing them, then when he finaly speak to you he will mentiona all the people he have killed with a evil touch. "I have slain **** **** who only took up arms becouse she couldn't find a man." , "i have buried **** *** alive under a mountin of hate." and on and on and on. Since i sent wave after wave of drunks against the cyclops, i got a two page list of people killed before it was finnished... and smashed my head.

No, the sad truth is.
The Demon has a preset kill limit.
After your fortress' King has sent wave after wave of dwarves against it, it finally has reached said limit when your adventurer encounters it, thus making it much weaker  :p

You could try modding it into the raws as a monster that randomly turns up as your fortress, like the colossus (colossi?) or dragons.  That way you'll get the chance to throw your entire army at it and see how it fares.

I'm fairly sure he's even immune to elephants. Since they can't wield crossbows or pointy things, they can hardly do any real damage to him. He really is an unstoppable rampager.

Did I mention I made his bite inject pure fire into the victim that burns them from within, paralyzing them? :P

How about engravings? A while back I made a fortress with dwarves that were set to be speedy and I messed about digging a big old hole and engraving every inch of it then sending my dwarves to their doom agains the demons. When I visited the fortress with an adventurer some of the engravings I found were interesting.

Like a picture of a dwarf with the lines blurred out in a spiral I believe symbolised "some dwarven name" getting encased in adamantite in a time before time.

Anyone care to try just making speedy dwarves and doing tons of engravings for your adventurer to look at?

Curious on why of all the threads, them certain ones are being picked x.x

But also: It's pretty interesting seeing there's an actual generational thing happening.

I guess the thread can continue because DF has been added onto a ton? At least, in the reverse, I recall seeing a LOT of games nowadays making easter eggs of DF.
