Title: What happens to named creatures washed off the map by rivers/hydro cannons?
Post by: Nomstukos on January 14, 2019, 05:35:01 pm
Same as topic^

I'm thinking about a science project were I tap into the hfs and get some named clowns that I will then wash of the map so I can see what they do in the world since they get purged from the fort when it falls. Before I start I just want to know if they would actually exist once they leave the map.

They're probably treated like off-map arriving migrants, and may attempt to re-enter the map or get stuck there.

It's been a long time since I've played, but is it actually possible to wash people or things off of the map edge?  For some reason I thought they just got stuck at the edge.

Indeed, that seams a reasonable assumption. Ballista arrows and catapult stones also just stop at the edge and fall to the ground.

Have you tried anything? Have a save? Example? I'm really interested by this, because I've spent an awful lot of time washing/throwing things at the map edge and it's always behaved like an impassible wall.

Specifically from my tests, if things hit the map edge (or sky ceiling) at high enough velocity, they explode into bits. Since you mentioned clowns, animal based ones tend to both explode the best (having the most parts), and survive the best. (being less likely to fall apart entirely, maybe because they have more individual parts to dissipate energy? Not sure on that part.)

In any case, please go ahead and try and see if things can be forced off the map at all.

My assumptions were based off of old boatmurder era posts were dwarves could get washed away by sesonal flooding and it is entirely possible that that changed. Guess im gona have to throw a cat in the river or something.

You can wash stuff off the map. I've never really tried to use a hydro cannon to do it specifically. It should just treat them as off the map named or not. They'll prolly try to come back if the water lets up or they can swim against it otherwise they should get stuck off the map until they can get around the water. Never managed to make it work myself nor those grate drains that send water off the map but not really tried much with those.

You don't even need to wash them off: once you've wiped out the first wave of HFS, any further HFS arrive and depart like any other wandering cavern creature.
