Life Advice / Cars and Car Repair
« on: October 16, 2015, 07:32:27 pm »
So, I have an old car (Late 80s old, not "Polish it up and take it to a show" old.) and some stuff is starting to happen to it which impacts the driving. This isn't the first time, it's just the latest in a long line of "what is it now?" problems that have been taken care of by professional mechanics.

As stupid as it probably is, I don't entirely lack a mechanical touch so I thought I might look at handling some of the simpler stuff on my own to save cash.

I'm looking for service manuals and coming up with basically nothing. I've seen used versions of the official dealer service manuals, which run about as much as a single major repair would and are thus outside of my budget and $20 "Haynes" manuals which almost everyone agrees is complete crap.

Anyone have any suggestions? I've also looked for free sources, in every sense of the word and come up short. Next stop is the local library to see if they have anything in stock, but library around here isn't all that great, so I don't know how helpful that will be.

I'd be happy buying the Haynes manual if it'll help at all, but few people are happy there. Otherwise I'm kind of lost and while I"m sure I could handle stuff with a manual, I'm a bit hesitant to start digging around the guts of a car without any sort of guidance. Last resort is to put out a local call to a car guy who I might be able to convince to look over my shoulder in exchange for buying lunch. Might do that anyway, but I would like to have a book on hand either way.

Also note, I also have a 2009 car which is more of my daily driver which while very reliable is probably entering the era where it will need some significant work done on it anytime soon. At the very least i know it needs new brake pads. A less thorough search has come up with nothing for that either, other than a Haynes manual, some overpriced dealer manuals, and a "diy" site the dealer puts out that's subscription based. Any suggestions for that era would be helpful as well. But seeing as I'm less confident with the newer cars(especially something I'd be driving regularly as opposed to the fun but mostly just sentimental garage filler 80s car.) I'm more inclined to take the 2009 to a professional.

Youtube is also a good resource, but not my ideal reference material, if you understand me.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Other Games / Enemy Starfighter - Roguelike Tactical Combat Space Sim?
« on: December 20, 2012, 11:18:35 pm »
http://enemystarfighter.com/

Announced somewhat quietly on twitter a week or so ago.

There's not a whole lot of info yet except a single youtube video of the gameplay and a few lines of description.

Video Here

Quote from: Description
Overview
A civilization’s downfall or ascension always begins with one thing: you.

The Penitent Crusade has lasted for 30 years and you’ve led the Emperor’s Harbinger Fleet for most of it.

Your mission is always simple:  Jump ahead into a system where you will most certainly be outnumbered, cripple it, and pave the way for the Armada to hang in the skies above the enemy home world like storm clouds and offer terms: submit or be purified.

Features
Classic STARFIGHTER COMBAT puts you in the cockpit and offers a visceral way to affect the outcome of each strike.
The PLANNING PHASE allows you to precisely coordinate your strikes for maximum impact on heretic dens, capital ships, and convoys.
A PERSISTENT FLEET gives meaningful consequences to your decisions while allowing you to customize your engagement style by using captured or reinforced ships.
A DYNAMIC CAMPAIGN means different systems will fall to the Empire during each playthrough.

Quote from: From Dev Blog
What is it? Be quick about it!
The game is a random single-player campaign about planning to shoot things in space, shooting things in space, and using loot from your last strike to make you better at shooting things in space. If you die, that’s it, game over. If one of your units dies, it’s gone (steal another one!). The game will be appropriately priced. I will need feedback and testing so expect some sort of pricing model that rewards early adopters. For now, I’m just focusing on making the game.

I’ll make more posts about gameplay specifics as I lock more of them down, but you can get a few ideas about what’s coming from some of the screenshots I’ve posted.

I'm really trying not to overhype this at the moment.... I'll just say watch that video.

General Discussion / 2012 Hurricane Season - Isaac is angry.
« on: August 23, 2012, 08:57:39 pm »
So, I haven't seen a hurricane thread here since Irene of last year, so perhaps it's time to start one up given that we're only half way-ish through the Atlantic season.

Unless it's quoted as being from another source, all information in my posts is my own personal opinion and I fully admit I'm a complete amateur at looking at this information. I could, and likely probably will be wrong in some, many, or all of my assertions. Any decisions you make personally are your own and the only place you should really turn for official information in life or death situations is the NHC or your own local weather service.

I mostly pay attention to the Atlantic basin, but I'll try to keep an eye on the Pacific as well for any interesting developments. My information sources are a bit lacking in that area though, so if anyone notices anything pop up, please say so.

Also, for the most part, I'll forgo graphics in this thread as WUnderground does it so well already, and if you're interested at all, check out Dr. Jeff Master's Blog and their tropical weather section at http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/ The only thing they don't have there is an easily viewed ECMWF model, but that's due to ECMWF's odd licensing and their refusal to let their models be combined with any others. It's still a good model though, and their site can be found at http://www.ecmwf.int/ (It is hard to navigate though.)

Atlantic:
So far this season we've seen:
Alberto
Beryl
Chris
Debby
Ernesto
Florence
Helene
Gordon
Isaac
Joyce

Joyce has faded away to a gusty breeze, Isaac still stands as a serious threat in the Gulf of Mexico

Spoiler: August 24th, 2012 (click to show/hide)

Isaac seems to have been hit hard by Haiti, but Haiti has also taken a beating from Isaac as well. Flooding tends to be a real problem there and since there are still an estimated 300,000 people who are living in tents after the earthquake, there is serious danger. The Haitian Government and several NGOs are reported to have been trying to get people sheltered as best they can though.

From this point, Isaac seems tracked to clip part of Cuba and most models suggest it'll swing way west out into the gulf rather than hugging the coast. From there, it's anybody's guess whether it will swing back east or continue on a northwesterly track. The northern gulf coast seems to be the target but Eastern Louisiana and the entire western coast of Florida are still in the cone. It's likely that tropical storm force winds will extend very far from the center, up to 200 miles in the near future, possibly farther at it's next landfall. Intensity modelling is notoriously bad, much worse than the tracking and even that is not great. From here on out, we have a decent idea of where it's going, but how strong it will be when it gets there is an unanswered question. Nobody is expecting a 4 or 5, but I have heard the numbers 2 and 3 thrown around and it's likely to be at least a 1. Personally I think the NHC errs on the side of strength a bit too much, but it's better to have people prepared for something strong and not have it be as bad than it is for them to expect a slight breeze and get knocked over by a tree.

Evening: Still dramatic amount of uncertainty as to Isaac's final landfall location. His strength depends a lot upon how long he spends over open water. He got chewed up pretty well by Cuba today, but tomorrow seems to provide plenty of opportunity to reorganize and strengthen.

Pacific:

Spoiler: August 24th, 2012 (click to show/hide)

August 25th, 2012
Morning:
Tembin seems to be strengthening again slightly, but is still on track to loop and hit Taiwan again in the next couple of days.

One of the reasons of this odd looping path is possibly Typhoon Bolaven just east of Tembin. Bolaven is forecast to be even stronger but it will instead be heading north towards Korea or nearby China on Monday or Tuesday, first crossing the islands between Taiwan and Japan at some point on Sunday. These two storms being so close together has an effect on their steering as nearby storms tend to orbit around each other in what's known as the Fujiwhara effect. As Bolaven is moving north, it'll probably pull Tembin along with it, dragging it back over Taiwan in that loop mentioned earlier.

Bolaven is approaching the islands between Taiwan and Japan as a very strong Category 4 storm. After passing there it is expected to encounter Korean shores as a Category 2 or 3 storm sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning.

Other Games / Microsoft Flight - Piecemealing the world as DLC on Feb 29th
« on: February 09, 2012, 09:42:48 pm »
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/07/chocks-away-ms-flight-flies-feb-29th/

So, it was somewhat expected, but perhaps not to this extent that Microsoft flight would be free to play with DLC. There were hints that we would have an extensive library of DLC to choose from so that Microsoft could get themselves some of that sweet, sweet add-on money that third party companies have been making for years off of previous flight sims. In the past, Microsoft got their $50 and then mod makers got 30 here, 20 there, 15 over there, is some cases going well beyond what the original program cost the customer. It seems obvious that Microsoft would want a piece of this, and so they decided to take it... by limiting people to a tiny little archipelago out in the middle of the Pacific. Possible expansions to come later.

This is... frustrating to me... A big part of my enjoyment of the series was long cross country trips, seeing large areas. Yeah, I enjoyed flying around some of the famous landmarks, but I also enjoyed just flying over Montana, or the Gulf Coast, or perhaps Turkey. But it seems as if, unless I buy the entire world, in Hawaii sized portions, at 20 dollars a pop, I'm not going to be able to do what I want where I want.

Nice work, Microsoft... Nice work. I'll play around Hawaii, since you give me that for free, but don't expect any extra money out of me unless you drastically change your business model.

tl;dr: Microsoft still thinks the real estate bubble hasn't burst yet and that it applies to virtual land.

Other Games / Forza Motorsport 4
« on: October 11, 2011, 01:45:54 pm »
Okay, other than the generic driving games thread that died in February, I haven't seen any threads that relate to this series specifically.

So, Forza 4 is coming out today, and while I've never even played the series(I've stuck to Gran Turismo 3 and 4), I absolutely fell in love with the demo over the last few days. I'm getting ready to head out and pick up a copy myself, I think. It'll be my first launch day purchase in several years.

Anyone else here playing it? Doesn't seem to be Bay12's kinda genre, but I know some of you are racing fans.

Anyone already have it? Anyone have any opinions? I've heard nothing but good about it, except the unfortunate lack of Porsche cars. Still, after racing almost exclusively on the PS2, this is going to be a big jump for me.

Also, if there's enough interest,  perhaps a Bay12 Racing club?

General Discussion / Bees: a Serious Discussion
« on: May 13, 2011, 12:07:40 am »
This morning I read an article on Aljazeera in regards to bees and cell phones. I'm unable to find that article again, however, others have popped up while searching, some from different time periods, at least two seperate studies are mentioned in these articles.
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/weekend/2011/0430/1224295739786.html
http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/are-mobile-phones-wiping-out-our-bees-444768.html
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17852_3-20006445-71.html
http://www.reghardware.com/2011/05/12/mobile_phones_affect_honeybee_population/

Long story short, researchers run experiments and in each case, it seemed that exposure to cell phone radiation would dramatically increase the chance of the bees in the colony being run off.

Now, I admit to being a bit biased on the side of the environment (and thus, the bees) However, it's not just environmental. Bees also have a direct and indirect commercial effect in honey production and agriculture.

What caused me to start this topic was that the, "TheRegister" (shown at http://www.reghardware.com )version of the article was claimed as sensationalist in another thread. However, I believe this is a serious problem and while perhaps being sensationalized to some extent, as any mass media tends to do with stories, it is a problem that deserves some attention. This is something I've been hearing about for years now, and yet I don't see anything being done nor anyone even really caring excepting the occasional news article or affected bee keeper. Anyone else have an opinion?

Other Games / Traveller - General Discussion
« on: March 10, 2010, 11:31:27 am »
Okay, since there was some interest in Traveller in the Eclipse Phase Thread, I thought it wouldn't be out of line to create a new thread dedicated to it. Perhaps we can get a group together or if anyone simply has any questions or wants to tell about their experiences then go ahead.

Since it was mentioned in the other thread, yes "Traveller" is the correct spelling for the game. From what I hear it was spelled that way on purpose, for whatever reason. From what I can gather, it's also a valid spelling, despite firefox and several other spell checkers not liking it.

DF Bug Reports / unconscious people can't be given alcohol
« on: October 31, 2007, 10:42:00 am »
I can understand that healing might be sped along by giving water only. But if it came down to dying of thirst, or giving an unconscious person some beer or wine, I think I'd give them the booze. Unfortunately the dwarves don't seem to make that decision, just letting wounded people dehydrate if... say... the water outside is frozen even though there are 300 some odd units of booze in storage.
