Title: Won't Make Charcoal
Post by: GamerKnight on January 31, 2011, 02:33:04 am
I have set three dwarve's professions to wood burner and none will make charcoal. They keep coming up with no job. This happens with other stuff sometimes too.

They are obviously elvish spies.

I'm assuming that you've built a wood furnace and issued a few "make charcoal" orders but they still hang around in your meeting zone drinking booze and chilling with their friends.  I've had this issues with miners before, but I was able to overlook it due to their inherent dwarfiness.  Refusing to burn the bones of sacred plants?  I think you've got yourself a problem.

Check that the workshop profile lets them work in that particular workshop.

And check that they're in the same burrow (or no burrow at all)

If you build another one right next to them - will they build it? Will that one work?

I don't use burrows or Workshop Profiles, and it isn't the workshop, its that they are ignoring the labor setting.

Do you have an accessable stockpile of logs, and that there's no obstructions or locked doors in the way?

Yep

Hmm... that is puzzling. All I can suggest is taking a seperate dwarf and turning all labours off, and then turning just wood burning on, and hope to Armok that he doesn't attend a party.

Tried it. Three parties and a strange carpenting mood later, no charcoal.

If all else fails, go for the magma forge.

Done it. Three FBs and 10 dead dwarves. No charcoal. This isn't a problem for all my fortresses, its only sometimes.

is the stone type used to make the furnace forbidden in the z-stone menu?

That shouldn't have any effect.

To the OP: are you sure you enabled Wood Burning (which does work) and not Furnace Operating (which does not work)?

Actually, if you do forbid the base material of a workshop, Dwarves will then refuse to use that workshop, so this could be a possibility.

Check if they have the labor enabled. Strange as it sounds some times migrants show up with the skills but not with the labor activated. I remember wondering why my new proficient carpenter wasn't making cabinets and finding out he wasn't allowed to

That only applies to forbidding the actual boulder used to build the workshop, not marking its material as economic in the z-stones menu.

Which is what I think we were talking about.

Use "T" to check the contents of the wood furnace and see if its boulder is forbidden or not.  Alternately, try building a new wood furnace.

This sounds like a problem I've occasionally had since before the 40d days. For some reason a workshop wont recognize that its got a job waiting in it. Canceling and re-enabling the job seems to fix it. Alternatively I've heard that enabling a job from the 'j'obs menu will also make stubborn workshops/dwarves do their jobs.
