It's times like this when I wish I -really- didn't have to go to work :( But meh, another 9 1/2 hours of anticipation won't hurt I guess :P
Again, well done - strike the earth! :D
It's finally here. I can hardly believe it. Congratulations, Toad. The new site looks great. I still haven't finished looking through everything... (by the way, the link to the Dwarf Fortress forum on the front page still goes to the Curses Arcade forum.)
My wait, however, has not yet ended. I'm going to refrain from downloading it until August 16, which is my birthday. Or at least, that's what I'll do if I can stand it, anyway.
On a final note, I just wanted to engage in a little unseemly bragging and point out this page on the old Dwarf Fortress thread. That part where I thought I'd figured out one of the giant easter eggs? My guess was basically right, only it was actually on an even larger scale than I'd envisioned. It was maybe more detective work than a guess, since Toad had given a few things away in this really old thread. Basically, the giant easter egg was the roguelike play-an-adventurer half of the game, which Toad has now revealed on the new Dwarf Fortress page.
And with that, I'll return to waiting. It's going to be one long-ass week...
I'm in the middle of the world generation at the moment, and I think the game has already beaten my anticipations.. many times.
Toady, you are a god.
Of course I haven't got to play yet, so the game could still just quit after creating the world with a message like "You got punk'd!", but..
I'm reading through the new development pages now. I thought I might be able to figure out what that mysterious bloat you put in a while back was, but I see that some things still remain secret...
Edit: he he he, indeed, more secrets. I can guarantee that these secrets are all kinda small and dumb though.

I have not tried yet, but it seems that it'll be a good game !
I am really pleased to see that some are able to create great, sophisticated games without becoming terribly arrogant (think Derect Smart), or just disappearing into vaporware (think entropy).
Just for this you've achieved something Toady !
Feel free to ask questions here or on the irc channel. Remember to read the manual for some basic pointers. "Your First Outpost" has some helpful stuff. "Your First Adventurer" is vaguely helpful, but you're gonna die anyway.
The 100MB figure is sort of iffy, hence the ~. Your first universe will be around 10MB say, then it will slowly grow. And grow. The 100MB was a warning. It can get quite large as you visit more and more sites, since it saves all the maps. I used to store random seeds to regenerate places, but now I'll just use your disk. It allows me to change the more drastically.
I won't stop there. I have a suggestion, too, of course.
It would be totally awesome if there was a way to change the font size (or even just double/triple font size by making pixels into more pixels) in the windowed mode. I love playing stuff in windowed mode because I can do other things at the same time, but DF is so very tiny on my screen in windowed mode.
Err... also, where's this manual? I've searched the file structure but am unable to find it. Also, how come > doesn't work when I'm over a site in the Adventure game? I have a Norwegian keyboard, which might make a difference there.

I would also highly appreciate changing of font size, because on my LCD the full screen mode looks UGLY and window mode is TINY. And I expect that I will play this game A LOT.
The game looks...well...so...really excellent! I can't belive it! I must play it for a while.
One of my favorite characters in RPG is dwarven weaponsmith... This is dream...

Toady, sofar the game is great! It's a little bit of a lerning curve, so much to do so many ways to do it!
First death I had so far has been my huntung dog I brought with me from my home kingdom of Etagegarezum, "The Big Old Hames" :(
Yeah, for font, go into data/init/init.txt and change the relevant lines to:
[WINDOWEDX:800]
[WINDOWEDY:600]
[FONT:curses_800x600.bmp]
This look all right over here anyway
The keyboard issue is going to be a constant annoyance until I figure these things out -- dwarves used to be written with PDCurses and when I transferred over from the getch() command I brought way too much baggage with me, so I'm not using virtual keys properly. For now, even though the key bindings screen seems to be crashy, you can go into:
data/init/interface.txt
and play with that directly, although it's a bit overwhelming. The file interface_qwerty.txt is probably useless for most people, but it sticks almost entirely to alphanumerics.
I'll be working on this issue, but since I can only direct test it on my computer, it'll be an ongoing struggle.
Also, it is very intriging to look at the world generation. In the raconting legends part, the later we are in time the longer it takes.
I am wondering what hides behind all these mechanics.
By seing a bit the game I have plenty of suggestions. But I guess that I'll simply refrain myself for now and play.
Suggestions will come later
Toady, you are a god.
Thanks to everybody playing the game, and thanks also to people supporting the site!
I took a break today (the first in... 112 days or something crazy), but hopefully I can take care of some of the issues of the next week or so.
This resulted in him standing still in the middle of the frozen lake, seemingly scared of walking at all or doing anything else either.. Except complaining about not finding a path to whereever he was going.
"Aban Dodókolon, Miner cancels Eat: Could not find path."
He stood there until the "The river ice is thin again" message, after which he fell into the lake and swam out. After a "Aban Dodókolon, Miner cancels Eat: Dangerous terrain." message.
Mainwhile, you let the kids play your game, and crash it to death; or play with all the nasty bugs we'll find.
I tried avoiding the computer today actually, but it just doesn't work, and I'm too nervy too sleep right now, really. So I've been fiddling with key bindings, and ftp python stuff with X, and writing down bug reports. Maybe I'll watch Clash of the Titans or something, since I've been having a bit of a Ray Harryhausen fest lately. Then I'll probably keep working. It's not like I have anything else to do right now.
We can simply imagine what will happen right now and for the last few days : A rain of requests, bugs... coming from all directions.
You can either watch in amazement the activity you've generated, but also maybe being submerged by all the reaction it will create minutes after minutes.
Or you can simply let things settle down. I don't thing that there is any urge to fix anything yet. The first crash or bugs we see today are maybe not the most important things.
When I am doing my small little programms, I either stay or move. Depends on my mood.

Hehehe, sorry, was not my intention. Just wanted to show how the game progressed. Played it a bit and wondered why my tileset refused to work. Then I realized there was no graphics support yet.
:D

I saw a bunch of version numbers and the word "Released", and got excited. After a bit of confusion, I discovered the awful truth! This thread is old as hell! What did you hope to achieve?!

I actually laughed out loud at the necromancer and the community's reaction to it. Hilarious! :D Either a Dabbling Forumsdwarf making a honest mistake or a Legendary Jerk. Either way you'd end up chained down in the dog breeding pit for some months in my fortress.
Torak cancels lurk: Too insane

And all the hoot about adventure mode being put in, I always took that for granted :)
Damn, 2 years of playtesting are over! Good job Toad!
[ August 08, 2006: Message edited by: Fourth Triad ]
Over? It's only just begun...
So how many people is thinking about doing it again with this topic just before next version release? :DToo late :P
