Title: Foothold -- A Succession Invasion!
Post by: Crocatowa on January 08, 2011, 12:20:34 am
The year is 250, marked of the 2nd age of men, 3rd of dwarf, and 5th by those stupid pointy eared folk... By Armok's will, our mountain homes have all flourished thus far through recorded history. The King... Our King... Bid the lords that have kept watch o'er his lands to select the bravest souls for a quest of glory. One soul from each of the Seven Dwarven Realms of the Momentous Universe. These seven are to be sent off on the greatest task ever conjured by the Council, to infiltrate, inhabit, and expand from within the lands of our tree-hugging foes... Who shall the Seven Dwarves be? And will they ultimately succeed?...

Rules of Play:
-Each player will have 3 days to complete either a 1 or 2 year cycle. No 1.5 or whatever, 1 or 2 years.
-The players are requested to continually update on the thread or at least make note that they will have a large update at the end of their turn.
-No Mods or Hacks are permitted. Subject to outstanding conditions

You may request your Dwarf and your profession(s).

I have decided to be the last of the Starting Seven to go. When I have all Seven, I will reveal the map and conditions.

The King has all of the slaves volunteers the farthest lords from the capital. Upon the receiving of the names and professions of these poor souls brave, stout figures of society, He has disclosed the details of the mission. His advisers have indeed revealed to me that there will be a long travel to the point... a good chance of goblins along the way... and if any are emotionally compromised by the sights of ghosts, he is deeply apologetic but your comfort is less important than the task at hand.

World Map!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A huge land it is! There be haunts and pointy eared pricks elves and forgotten beasts about!

The mission has been revealed! The King is pleased that he now has all of his precious minions citizens ready to embark on so grandiose a journey!

He has shown me the maps of what we are dealing with:

And our starting point:

The King's mission is thus. Build a fortress of absolute fame and fortune in the elven lands and destroy them. He wants the fortress to reach a level that he himself may dwell there and lead the attack himself! He also bids us good luck against the haunted area just south of us....

I think you'll have luck revealing the conditions first; that way people who want to play in those conditions will join. It's good advertising.

That is, unless you're planning to ram a cast iron prick wrapped in razor wire up the rear end of your captive players and pump hard until the blood flows. Then I could see the need for secrecy. And hormone therapy.

I'll join this. I want to be an engraver and a miner.

This is going to be a story type, so the unseen lands are part of the set-up

Doesn't that make in a community fort?

I thought Succession was where you take "Turns" controling the fort. After your "turn" You pass it to another person to play through a file ((So on and so forth))

While community was you pick a charecter and they nickname the person and involve you in the plot.

Correct?

A community fort is wrtten by one person, a succecion game is passed on, some people role play some don't.

It is a succession, but the introduction is going to be a story to get the first player in the feel. Then it will go in the 1-2 year cycles per player. This is my first time doing this so im trying to make this work out aswell as work the kinks out so that i could host more later on.

Well, Preferably we would get away without it, but i see no harm in that one. Im more worried about dfliquids. If this turns into anything like Ardentdikes, the cleaning tool may become necessary. so... I guess dfdig is okay, but other ones are on a case-by-case.

I wanted to be the extremly slow and inefficent (or it was uneffcient? I'm not very good in English) assasin of the spoon, but I think it is too long, and the game doesn't allow it.

Screw haunted. Everyone and there dog and cat has done haunted. I want us to be in the very heart of the elven lands. We'll tear them apart from the insides.

Can you still embark on top of an Elven forest retreat?  It kills the FPS but it would give us all the Elves our axes could ever want.

Edit:  Just checked and you can't do it anymore.
Pity, those Elves always made such good meatshields...
and practice targets...
and firewood...

The region is savage. So the haunted helps and its like, dead inbetween the haunted and a war elf encampment

According to dflegends, one of the groups in that zoomed in region is. I think its the one entirely surrounded by thick forest. If not... i say we kill their traders and steal their goods silence all of them who come by our fortress. We cannot let our name out unto the elven traders.

First Update:
Sorry for the lack of images, i'm not very good with screenshots.

First of Granite:
So here we are, in the middle of nowhere, right nex to those pointy eared elves... This is what I like... This looks as a good place for starting our fort...

First of all, the leader, Mr Blackhat, asked me to design our new home... I started with a little hall for us, and with two storages zones. One for our food, and one for everything else. And I also designed a zone for the workshops. After that, seeing the lack of stone in that area, I order the other miner, Branded or something like that, to help to mine down. We found some stone. The leader also ordered the other woodcuter to chop down some trees.

First of Slate:
Well, the thing is going well. We have already struck some limonite and some gems. And I'm plannig to create a dinnig hall and some bedrooms. The leader has given me a lot of independence.

Fith of Slate:
We have started the construccion of a complex for our underground farms. I think it's more important than the bedrooms, so I haven't started them yet.

Ok, this is bad... I have some problems with my computer to run the game, so i can do two things, I can upload the save now (it's almost winter) or I can upload it tomorrow before I go to the burial with the year completed (And, please, whoever that goes next, please, respect my mausoleum.)

27th Slate:
Rentorian has created a door masterpiece. To the dinning room you go.

13th Felsite:
We have found a cavern. I'm using to mine gold and silver and for havig water indoors.

20th Hematite:
3 migrants. I'm starting to build tombs for everyone and a little thing for me...

5th Malachite:
Rentorian has created another masterpiece. A coffin. That's for my tomb!

9th Malachite:
3 cats adopt me, almost at the same time.

21st Galena:
A kobold thief appears and hurts a dog. Two dogs kill him.

28th Galena:
I kill the injured dog. We need food...

9th Limestone:
A war dog gave birth to puppies. I think I know what to do with them...

23rd Limestone:
Ten migrants, a bit more useful than the firsts ones.

18th Timber:
Merchants!! I traded two bins of crafts for food, booze and an anvil. (Somehow I used the first charcoal to create iron. Big fail... Now we have to wait until the next caravan bring us charcoal) They want crafts, ammo, meat, crosbows and hammers and they'll pay for them.

5th Moonstone:
We have seen a forgotten beast made out of salt in the caverns, but there is no way that it get to us... By now.

5th Opal:
Crocatowa has created a masterpiece... A mechanism... I'm using it for the cage and stone fall trap system.

18th Obsidian:
Rentorian has created another door of great quality... For his bedroom now.

25th Obsidian:
Looking to a hill in the west, i think that the next one should remove the ramps, create an only enter using bridges and build a temple for the god of blood.

Ok, first year finished. I'm uploading it to Megaupload (a spanish server. It's just i'm too lazy for creating a new account... You don't have to sign, just input the four letters and/or numbers in the box and wait until the 45 seconds for the "Descarga Normal" button are over.

9th of granite:
I arrived with anticipation, I've been told of places that border the elven retreats and how they usually end up as deserted ghost fortressess. Yet i have hope.
Looking in from outside, i see lots of dwarfs working hard. Which is always nice.

6th of slate:
Seraphis has, according to reports around the fortress. Been muttering in strange languages.
he has come to me asking for a carpenters workshop, and i approved, hoping that it would calm the other dwarfs down.

11th of slate:
Seraphis has (finally) come out of the workshop and to everyones suprise has made a palm crutch.

7th of felsite:
Work on the barracks has nearly been completed. it has room for 10 recruits, possibly more.

10th of hematite:
construction of the flooring on the first level is almost done, i've had to enlist almost all of the residents to help with this undertaking.

22nd of hematite:
Tosid bomrekimik has given birth to a wonderfull baby boy. rojoice.

flooring for the first floor has been completed.
flooring is now being worked on for the barracks.

according to the records we have a total of 44 residents now.

28th of malachtite:
"Rentorian Thobtortith has been taken by a strange mood" said one very drunk dwarf. was the headline of our daily newspaper.
I have given him a masons workshop, in hopes of him producing something of fine quality

6th of galena:
Rentorian has finally started construction of... something. i hope it will add value to our fort.

10th of galena:
Rentorian has completed his project: a bituminous coal floodgate. at first i was quite dissapointed, then out broker valued it at 93600* and then i was really happy with Rentorian

My guess would be that they had a "possessed" mood, which is the only type of mood that does not give any skills. Rather infuriating if it happens too often.

1st of limestone:
The construction of the forges have been completed and have started to make steel, I will be asking the forge manager to turn the bars into weapons and armor for new recuits.

20th of limestone:
more migrants have arrived, this bring the forts total up to 51.
ill be sure to recruit some of them into the military.

15th of sandstone:
lately lots of kolbolds have been trying to sneak in and steal out "treasures" but everytime out faithful dogs have stopped them, now all of a sudden one of them has bled to death:
Bomrek orsharfeb, we shall remember you ;__;

17th of sandstone:
I have just looked at the animal logs, and it turnes out we have 53 animals in total, seems most of them being puppies. i have locked them all up in a cage. but it seems that this hasnt stopped them giving birth.

22nd of sandstone:
The forts first set of steel armor has just been made, this is an incredible day in the history of the fort.
More sets have been planned and the steel is being made right now

1st of timber:
Tosid Mingkilfikod has become depressed and quite withdrawn.
he has come to me to ask for a workshop. hopefully he will show the same profesionalism that Rentorian showed when making his own artifact.

he has went insane, thankfully not into a rage

20th of timber:
the oupost liason has just arrived i hope he brings some good news from the king.

26th of moonstone:
the second set of steel armor has been created and the military is being made as i type this:
Branded - military commander - steel armor/wep
sepharis - second in command - steel armor/wep

How do you define worthy exactly?
Sure newborn infants are always considered worth sacrifices but fortresses tend to be rather lacking in the sacrificable infants area, I'm assuming that the next best thing would be sacrificing elves, they tend to have a lot of blood.

1st of Granite

So, I've been appointed as head of this little fort and-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

oh dear, do we have work to do.
First off, there's only one damn miner in the entire fortress, and secondly NO BOOZE! :'(
I found the problem. We're growing Dimple Cups and Quarry bushes in the farms, neither of which can be brewed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I drafted one peasant into the army, and made the other a much needed miner.

Hmm, everything else appears to be-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What.
I swear I will use the dwarf who thought THIS was a good idea as FERTILIZER!
I have ordered the masons to build a wall around the exposed cavern. And if anything dangerous is in that water, I'm getting rid of the well, too.

3rd of Granite

Damn it, the caverns are too tall, and walling them off is not worth it. I'm sealing the level via floor-hatch until gold or silver is needed. Also, I've begun expanding the metalworks, as roughly 1/5 of the fortress consists of metalworkers. Additional mason's workshops are being constructed for the same reason.

More will come tomorrow, I'm kinda swamped with schoolwork today.

Edit: Added spoiler tags to pics. Update arriving posthaste.

I got finished a little early so small update.

17th of Granite

I've had fuel production increased (in that all but one smelter now refines either coal or lignite), and begun a...project of sorts...
Also, I don't know what Branded is doing with that shield, but it can't be sanitary.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(sorry, I couldn't resist).

26th of Granite

I've begun construction of a small well to replace the one in the caverns.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The picture shows the cistern, the well will be safely up one floor.

3rd of Slate

I've begun digging out some more housing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

More tomorrow. Am tired.

Edit: Oh, right, and I've dorfed the new miner "!!Urist!!" for ya, Scaraban.

Migrant wave brought the fortress to 71 dwarves, and drafting increased our military to 9 dwarfs strong.

A weaponsmith is possessed, and creates Ticksadmired, The Brave Sorcerors, the steel short sword.

!!Urist!! gave birth to a boy.

and then the ELVES arrived with their caravan.

I will post RESULTS either tomorrow or later this evening.

EDIT: I decide to retract the primary bridge, so that the goblins cannot attack until our citizens have finished hauling in the spoils from the elves.

10th of Hematite

Retracting the bridge has worked very well, as luckily there are no archers in this small force. All we've lost so far are a few cats, which isn't a bad thing. Now the Goblins are stuck outside, bothering no one.

Not much has happened, but the secret project is nearing completion, the hospital is finished, and there's finally enough armor for the military.

10th of Limestone

Hmm, very little of interest has happened, I ordered the miners to dig down a ways, but it should be a while befo-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

NEVER MIND. I have heard tales of this wondrous metal, but to see it in person...I have ordered small-scale mining of the substance. Soon our warriors shall be clad in indestructible armor, and with weapons of legend they shall lay waste to those accursed elves, and anyone else who gets in the way! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

23rd of Limestone

The miners finally manage to bring up a sample, and to my frustration, the metalworkers don't seem to be able to do anything with it; it's completely heat resistant. One of the craftsdwarfs looked at it, and said he could extract strands of metal from the ore. They did that and the result was...breathtaking. the strands can be smelted into wafers of the substance, or woven into extremely durable clothing.

I'm gonna update later today or tomorrow. I...need a while to digest this.

7th of Sandstone

Unfortunately, the extraction process is incredibly slow; we have yet to get a single wafer of the wondrous metal. I have built additional craftsdwarf's workshops to compensate for this.

18th of Sandstone

More migrants have arrived! nothing interesting, but we are now at 85 dwarfs!

28th of Sandstone

I had the engravers work on the new dining hall, and I've got to hand it to 'em, they know how to engrave a dead elf!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just as I exit the dining hall, a stonecrafter takes over a craftdwarfs workshop dedicated to processing adamantine, and starts demanding a turtle's shell less than EVERYTHING.
I need to consider whether I should accommodate him, or wall him into his workshop.

10th of Timber

I have decided to accommodate the lunatic...for now. I unseal the exposed cavern so that dwarfs may gather cave spider silk, and have ordered the slaughter of several kittens to provide him with bone and hides.

11th of Timber

A dwarven caravan has arrived! In even better news, the first set of Adamantine armor is finished, and I have given it to Branded, our militia commander, along with an Adamantine battle axe!

16th of Timber

I get word that the stonecrafter has begun his project as I head to converse with the merchants.
I request booze. Lot's of booze.
I trade two barrels of Gnomeblight we got from the elves and a gold amulet for some leather, cloth, booze, and meat. While we trade, I also tell them about my water reactor, and ask them for suggestions on its use. After a lengthy discussion, we decided that, while awesome, orbital magma death lasers would be rather hard to build, even with infinite power. Oh, well.

19th of Timber

The stonecrafter's artifact is complete, and I must say that I am impressed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've got no idea how the hell he managed to make spikes out of silk, but why not?

Right as he finishes, Goblins strike from ambush! I don't know what the hell happened to piss them off this much, but at least we have the caravan guard to aid us in this battle.
I will post the battle's results shortly.

...huh. Considering the outcome of the last battle, this one was luckily anti-climactic. One macedwarf from the caravan mauled a few of the goblins, and they all ran screaming. Damn good thing, too, as much of our military is still nursing injuries from the last battle, myself included.

1st of Moonstone

Winter has arrived, and a second set of Adamantine armor has been commissioned. A trade agreement has also been reached.

Icee arrives first, and is slaughtered by the foul thing. I am about to rush to combat it in his stead, but all of a sudden, Branded leaps onto the thing and severs several of its legs. They then fight, and Branded is knocked down the defensive channel! But as he falls, he sinks his axe into the beast's thorax, slaying it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Someone give this dwarf a medal. The thing's corpse is being butchered as I write.

15th of Obsidian

Other than the Forest Titan, we've had a very uneventful winter. On an unrelated note, I've just noticed how bloody our entrance is. Meh, no reason to clean it up, really.

17th of Obsidian

A vile force of darkness has arrived!

Hmm. I ordered everyone inside and the bridge retracted. I want a degree of safety, for now.

1st of Granite

What's this? A letter.
...
WHAT?

Ok, so some baron heard about my water reactor and petitioned the king to make this decree:

"By order of the king, I hereby remove the dwarf Spuddy from his post as overseer of Foothold, for use of undwarf-like use of magic and witchcraft, the offending action being the construction of some sort of perpetual motion machine. Effective immediately."

Some superstitious baron decides that he doesn't like water-reactors, despite the concept being older than he is! Ugh. So after a year of management, I am forced to step down. I shall pass on the title to Rentorian, the fortress broker. I will retire into the military, where I can still defend this fortress. Attached to this journal are the fortress's stocks.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh, and he thinks a water reactor is witchcraft? How the hell did he deliver mail in the middle of a siege?

Also, to address your concern, sepheris, 1. you were resting in the hospital during the incident and 2. We now have more Adamantine armor than we have soldiers. But we only have 5 soldiers.

Oh, and the next person needs to re-dorf Icee.

Wonderful Turn! Rentorian has been notified to gather the save and continue playing!

What depth of caverns have we reached? all 3?
Title: Re: Foothold -- A Succession Invasion!
Post by: PotatoLord on January 28, 2011, 12:12:05 am
Yup, all three cavern layers have been breached, with the adamantine somewhere near the top of the third layer. On and unrelated note, I have an idea that involves HFS and elves on fire that I will test in a different fort. I have to see if a glitch involving hatch covers has been fixed.

Oh, he doesn't have a scratch on him. In fact, right now he's the only one in the military who isn't resting an injury.

You were the first to get to the titan, and were bitten by its poison fangs, then kicked to death. I even gave you adamantine armor! If only I could have trapped it...then we'd have some Fun.

From the Notes Of Rentorian
****************************
Granite the First, 254
Today has been... Interesting, to say the least.  I was doing my rounds like always, making sure that no one had removed any rocks from my 'To Be Counted' pile when the mayor walked up to me with a big grin on his face, always a bad sign.  I'm not really sure what happened next, the mayor started giving me a speech about the importance of duty, and following the orders of the king, but to be honest I sort of fell asleep a couple minutes in.  I woke up again just as he said '.. and therefore you are now head of the committee to oversee the distribution of all goods, services, and general goings on in the fort.  Oh, and we're currently under siege and the king wants the water wheels destroyed.'  With that he just threw the overseer's badge at me and ran off!
I guess that means I'm in charge here... I guess I should do something about those goblins.
.........
It looks like the goblins can't get in here, so I guess they aren't much of a threat, and I looked at the water wheels and they don't seem to be 'heathen works of the devil's black magic' so I just locked the doors and decided to ignore them for now.  I guess I should get to work ordering people around then, wish me luck!

Granite The Second, 254
Armok's beard!  Almost no one has been assigned any rooms!  We have over 80 people living here and not even twenty of us have rooms to call our own!  Dwarves are just going in and out of unassigned rooms, sleeping wherever they find a bed!  It's so... so.. unorganized!  I started construction of an extension to one of the bedroom floors and begun the construction of more beds and doors.  The new rooms might not be nice but they'll be better than nothing.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It also seems that the mayor's quarters don't even exits!  How are we supposed to run a successful fortress if our illustrious mayor doesn't even have a study where he can do... whatever it is that mayors do.  Therefore I've also drawn up some simple plans for his quarters.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Granite the Eighth, 254
It seems my concerns about the rooms weren't as true as I feared.  There are plenty of rooms, not enough for the entire fortress but enough to house most of our people, they were just never assigned to anyone.  Most of the dwarves now have rooms even without excavation of the new housing wing having started.

Granite the Thirteenth, 254
I'm tired of everyone being trapped inside the fortress and unable to work on cutting down trees to make more beds and barrels, it's time to deal with this siege!  The military will wait behind the traps my predecessors have set up and deal with whatever makes it through.  In preparation I drafted several more dwarves into the military, bringing each squad to five members.  The veterans should be able to cover for the recruits enough to keep them alive.
........
SUCCESS!!
The goblins are routed and the siege is almost over!  I'd like to say it was the work of our mighty military but it was the traps that did most of the work.  two goblins were killed in the initial stonefall traps and one had his spine broken, I believe he may be paralyzed from the waist down.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The next set of traps captured no less than SEVEN of the foul little beasts.  Leaving them with less than half of their original force.  Five more were captured at the next set of traps, including their leader and his mount.  Two of the goblins managed to penetrate the fort only to be captured by the next set of traps.  Note to self, figure out who commissioned all these traps and give them a medal.  The last goblin is wandering around inside the inner courtyard trying to find a way out in some attempt to salvage their mission, perhaps our military can show him the way out.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I feel like I should make some sort of joke about being disarmed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

*OOC: I really didn't expect so many gobbos to just get screwed over by the traps, guess the military will have to wait for another day to prove their worth.*

Granite the Twentieth, 254
Finished assigning rooms to everyone and the mayor's quarters are nearing completion.  They still need to be smoothed and possibly engraved so they meet his expectations but he's happier than I've seen him in some time.  Still wants to know about the 'demonic waterwheels' though.

Granite the Twenty-First, 254
Seems I'm no longer right about having assigned rooms to everyone.  Today !!Urist!! gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, not entirely sure why a newborn infant needs her own room but it isn't my place to question things like this.  Not entirely sure how she manages to carry both her children and still dig out the new prisoner storage area either.  I'll have to ask her about that one.

Slate the First, 254
Migrants!  20 of them!  Just when I had everything in order and everyone had a room, I'll have to get the miners working on some more rooms.  There were also a number of military trained dwarves among them, so I've created one more squad of soldiers.  We don't have enough armor or weapons to go around quite yet so I've order steel production into effect and have started mining for more coal, iron, and flux.  I know we have adamantine but I want to keep that in reserve.

Slate the Eighth, 254
Well no wonder no one was working, someone had put out an order saying that all civilians should stay indoors!  There aren't any goblins outside anymore (That aren't in cages anyway) so I put a stop to that order and everyone went rushing to get to work.
*OOC: Can't believe I forgot to remove the burrow restrictions no wonder no one was taking care of all those goblins in cages.  I made a new alert status for when we're under attack*

Slate the Eleventh, 254
Repulsion has been acting strangely lately, I passed him in the halls recently and he just kept muttering to himself.  I wonder what's wrong.
.....
He just barged into a mason's shop and threw everything out of it, he's stalking around the fortress muttering about materials for his masterpiece or something

Slate the Fourteenth, 254
Repulsion finally gathered all his materials together... Not sure why it took him three days to find a piece of kaolonite and two pieces of limonite ore.  Maybe they're special?

Slate the Nineteenth
What a wonderful day!  We finally struck magma!  I've already drawn up plans for magma furnaces and forges down near the sea.  No more relying on coal to stoke our furnaces.  Repulsion finished his masterpiece today, he says he's been blessed with knowledge of the earth by Armok himself, whatever that means.  Anyway he made Zimeshalath the kaolinite door.  Kinda neat I guess, I don't quite understand it though.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Felsite The Eighteenth
It seems that the elves have arrived to try and trade with us.  Didn't we kill their last trading expedition?  Oh well, the military will definitely see some action this time.
.......
Or not.  It looks like a titan decided this would be a good time to visit us too.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
.....
Rabab Athnaza just ran right by our front gate and is chasing the elven merchants around, Bluesproto has thrown a part to commemorate the event.
.......
The titan quickly grew bored when his elven friends decided to leave and decided to see how we felt about playing.  Luckily The titan was made of chalk and proved to be easy prey for our superior military.  It's too bad really we could have been great friends, he killed elves, we kill elves, he melts people with his saliva we melt people with magma.  The elves were kind enough to leave us a new pet, some plants, beer, and some of their usual wooden things.

**************************************

That's it for tonight, should get more of the year done tomorrow.  I don't think we'll have any problem with Rabab's toxic saliva, he used it like a projectile so it didn't leave any pools behind, just the broken arrow symbols when it missed and dead elves when it hit.  Oh and I dwarfed Icee and drafted him as a wrestler.

Form the notes of Rentorian, Master Number Cruncher
*****************************************
Hematite The Third, 254
Vabok gave birth to a girl today.  Beyond that nothing else has happedened since the titan was killed.

Hematite the Tenth, 254
A cave crocodile jumped out of the water in the underground fishing platform, unfortunately the cage traps weren't set up yet and it managed to kill two fisherdwarves.  The military got there very quickly and dispatched the beast without suffering any injuries.  I light of this tragedy I've ordered the tombs to be expanded so that we'll be ready in case tragedy strikes again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Malachite the First, 254
Another birth today, this time Asob gave birth to another girl.  Steel production is running smoothly and the underground fishing platform is nearing completion.  Perhaps I should start making something for myself...

Malachite the Ninth, 254
More migrants arrived today, perhaps they heard stories of our successes against the forgotten beasts or our riches in steel.  Only nine migrants this time but I suppose that's for the best, if we got too many migrants we would have even more trouble finding work for everyone than we do now.  I was able to assign them all their own quarters easily enough but we have less than twenty unclaimed rooms left.  I may need to expand the living floor again soon if the migrants keep coming.

Galena the Sixth, 254
I passed Edem Dodikidor in the halls today, he was muttering something about the will of Oberon or something as he kicked Deduk out of one of the magma forges.

Galena the Twenty-Fourth
Edem finally gathered the materials he needed to make his masterpiece...  took him long enough
*OOC: He has gathered dog leather, cave spider silk cloth, bloodstones, rough bloodstones, kitten bones, palm logs, mica, AND adamantine wafers.  This thing better be good.  Oh and edem's only metalcrafting skill? Weaponsmith 8)*
..........
I suppose good news is always followed by bad news, it seems that an ambush has managed to sneak right up to our gates!  I  can only hope the military can get there before we lose any dwarves.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Galena the Twenty-Seventh
One goblin is left outside and three dwarves have died, however not all the news I've been given today is bad!  Today I was told that Edem completed his project Tathtatumstiz Rimadducim
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pushing our fortress's created wealth far over 3 million and Edem has learned how to make weapons worthy of fey themselves!
******************************************
Not much happened during summer other than Edem making that crossbow. Seriously that thing is AWESOME!  I was hoping to pass 3 mil in created wealth before my turn ended and that thing skyrocketed us up to 3.5 mil.  I might be putting up autumn later today, not sure though.

And you have been dorfed mr McExplode.
On a side note the fortresses created wealth at the beginning of my turn was 2107197, as of early winter it is now 4324554.  All the production of steel EVERYTHING may have had something to do with it but holy crap.

Awesome, I imagine that it might not be practical by my turn, but I have a plan for an elf greeting device: Pressurise a bunch of water and have it speed along to knock elf traders (or invaders) down a few levels into an arena. The water would then drain away (or at the pull of a lever, not drain if they are too tough) leaving some bruised tree huggers ready for live training purposes! Below is a layout of what I mean:

       TANK
PUMP       DEPOT
                       PIT
                       PIT
                       ARENA
                                DRAIN

Of course, I'm open to other avenues of mechanised anti-elf mayhem :)

Post by: Rentorian on February 01, 2011, 08:34:04 pm
I already made an arena that you could use, add a few grates for the drains and some more tunnels to get drowned rats elves in there easily and you'll be golden.
It could also double as our first elaborate deathtrap!

Here it is guys, last update containing both fall and winter!
************************************
From the Notes of Rentorian, Master Number Cruncher

Sandstone the Ninth, 254
Goden Feshkivish threw a tantrum today to protest the long military duty.  Although, his tantrum seemed to consist of nothing but walking around grumbling.

Sandstone the Tenth, 254
Goden threw another tantrum today, this time he just went to get a drink .  It's nothing like the tantrums I've heard happen in other forts where dwarves go insane and strike down their neighbors but I've loosened the military schedule and given each squad three months off a year to try and prevent more tantrums.
*OOC: I was really worried when I got the announcement that Goden was throwing a tantrum.  When I checked the announcements I saw that he had already thrown one and I had missed it.  Not really sure why things happened that way...*

Sandstone the Fourteenth, 254
Seven more migrants today, nothing happened for months and now we've had tantrums and migrants and Sandstone isn't even over yet!

Sandstone the Thenty-Eigth, 254
Imush Tobultogum gave birth to a girl today, she's joined the ranks of people who can carry two children and still do their jobs properly.

Timber the Seventeenth, 254
Etur Medtobegen started muttering something about fairies controlling his brain and ran off to the jewelers workshop, I doubt we'll be getting a legendary weapon out of this.

Timber the Eighteenth, 254
The outpost liaison was sighted today leading a caravan from the mountain homes, hopefully they have good news.

Timber the Twentry-Fourth, 254
Etur finished making his secret project, Gemsit Ag.  He is also now considered a legend among gem setters.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Timber the Twenty-Sixth, 254
An bush squad of goblins was sighted outside!  I can only hope that no one is lost in the attack.
.....
With the help of the caravan guards we were able to weather the attack without a single casualty!  There were a few injuries but those will heal in time.

Timber the Twenty-Eighth, 254
I concluded business with the traders today.  I was able to get several hundred units of beer and food, as well as several bins of cloth and leather.  I also sent a couple thousand in gifts to the king to show how our outpost has been prospering.

Moonstone the Fifth, 254
The Forgotten Beast Aco appeared in the caverns beneath the fortress.  Fortunately he can't fly and the only way into our fortress from the cave is a set of hatches in the ceiling.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
*OOC:  I think I did better drawing this one, just sayin'*

Moonstone the Thirteenth, 254
I have ordered the construction of a set of weapon traps as a last defense against invaders should they get past our other traps and our soldiers.  Each of the traps contains 5 serrated steel discs and 5 giant axe blades, all crafted of our finest steel.  I am almost tempted to let some of our enemies reach them to see how well they will work once the construction is done but that is likely far in the future given how quickly some dwarves have been working.

Opal the Second, 254
Sibrek Erarsibrek gave birth to a baby girl...
I'm starting to notice a trend here...

Opal The Twenty-Second, 254
The Arena is complete and the first goblins have been dropped in, I need only wait for the resu-
Sorry for cutting off so suddenly, I was just hit in the face by the arm of one of the goblins that was dropped down there, two stories down!  I think this was a success.
On a side note the weapon traps are complete, any intruder that escapes the other traps and our mighty army will be met with a swirling corridor of steel death.
*OOC: That was hilarious!  The goblin landed on a dwarf and they both just sat there, stunned for about a second, then every dwarf in the arena just swarmed the poor bastard and tore him apart!  It was beautiful.  I'll be leaving a few prisoners for the next person to play with, don't worry.*

Obsidian the Twenty-Eighth, 354
This shall be my last entry as overseer, the mayor came up to me today and told me it was time for me to resign.  I'm not sure why but I heard rumors about my how he lost nearly three inches of his beard in one of the weapon traps I had installed.  In any case my time as overseer is over and I will hand the badge on to Sepharis and go back to my ledgers, they're so much easier to understand.
********************************
Sorry for the lack of pictures this time through, not much to take pictures of to be honest, everything either was over pretty fast and not worth capping or just boring everyday stuff.
Spoiler: Short Turn Overview (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Final Stats (click to show/hide)

At this rate by the time it gets to my turn the fortress will have 500 people and will be worth 172782016 DwarfBucks. Or it will have 23 forgotten beasts, 3 healthy dwarves, and more contagions than you can shake a stick at.

Just thought I'd mention this- the military dwarf tantrum may be a result of having their squad scheduled for training with a minimum of more dwarves than are currently present or available in the squad- in which case, they may all just stand around in the barracks without taking actual breaks until they are too hungry/thirsty/tired to continue.

Yes, I did notice during my turn that training was set to a 10 squad member minimum; however I thought nothing of it, as they were training, and somewhat content with the addition of the artifact floodgate in the barracks.

I can remember using a similar trap design in a previous fortress. It was constructed out of copper however. I also found out I had a giant cave spider problem... when I saw it's corpse next to the traps.

Also, downloading save now. I have little time today to start doing anything, really, but I have a day off of work tomorrow, so the timing was spot on

EDIT
Had a look around, got lost several dozen times. Trying to decide on what to spend my time doing. Debating cleaning up outside, or leaving corpses/skeletons as "decoration"

It does take a while to get used to the layout of the place doesn't it?
But that's part of the joy of having a fort run by different people each year, we all have our own ideas on how to make things work.

~~Scribbles from the Journal of Sepharis~~

1st Granite

I have been informed that, due to a 'close call,' the former leader has been relieved of his duties and, effective immediately, I am to take leadership... This could be interesting.

9th Granite
I passed Cog Estiloddom in the corridor today, muttering about gods or some such. I'll have to keep an eye on him.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

9th Granite - Follow-up
Cog has claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop. No one was using it, so that's not too big of an issue. Unfortunately, I doubt he'll make anything useful.

18th Granite
Well, Cog has finally gathered his materials and begun building... something.
It took 9 days... I think the locations of stockpiles and workshops need a bit more organisation. I'll have to look into it.

We got some more migrants. 22 this time, bringing our population up to a total of 141.

23rd Granite
Cog has completed his 'Artifact,' and to the surprise of no one, it is a useless mug. A well decorated mug, but still pretty useless.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've ordered it to be put in a useless crap finished goods stockpile, along with the other useless artifacts and miscellaneous goods

18th Slate
A number of tame animals seems to be using our fort as a home. I have ordered a kennels constructed and as many of the animals are to be trained as war animals as possible. This will bolster our military ranks. The remaining animals are being relocated to a few new cages set up near the butchers, for convenience.

22nd Slate
I have ordered the construction of a siege workshop. Nothing will be more welcoming for the elves than a ballista bolt to the torso. I am unsure of where to set it up, but I can't keep a smile off my face when I picture the results.

10th Felsite
Vabok Monomurem has given birth to a baby boy. She becomes another of the mothers who are carrying around two babies and still managing to work without problems.

12th Felsite
Crisis time people. Elves have arrived.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Unfortunately, there are no ballistae pointed at the trade depot (let alone anyone skilled enough to hit anything), so I have geared up and joined the military. We'll strike as they begin unloading their goods, catch them off guard.

13th Felsite
I've ordered everyone to take shelter as soon as possible, a siege has arrived. Somewhere in the region of 50 goblins, about two thirds of which are mounted on voracious cave crawlers (reports were iffy as most people were too busy running for the fort). I'm interested in seeing how the elves cope with them, but the goblins seem pretty determined to attack us first, so I have ordered all squads to take up position at the entrance. Reports say about 12-18 of them are equipped with crossbows... I've ordered the squads to be extra careful about them.

**OOC: Forgot to take screen shot of the announcement, so take my word for it... and this pic;

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

14th Felsite
There are about 3 dwarves outside, holding the entrance. First reports aren't fantastic, the crossbow goblins are proving to be quite a threat at distance.
We have 3 losses so far. One bowyer, who was too slow in getting back, a new recruit (unfortunate, but hardly surprising), and former leader, Branded. It's such a shame that a leader such as him was killed by a stray crossbow bolt.

14th Felsite – Follow-up
If my reports are correct, we lost another dwarf to the crossbows. All 3 squads now lack their appointed commander. Unfortunately, they were the only dwarves to react to the order to kill the goblins. With the lost of the militia commander, Branded, I have appointed myself to the position. With this position, maybe the damned military will listen when I tell them to kill something. But first, I need a brief rest.

**OOC: I swear they are doing this on purpose. Every (living) military dwarf is listed as either sleeping, drinking, or resting. Two are listed as “Cannot follow orders” but I can't for the life of me figure out why. On the plus, I think the weapon traps are going to get one hell of a test.**

**OOC: I was going to post this in seasons, but I'll cut it off there. I'm feeling half conscious due to illness, and let's face it, this is going to end badly whatever I do, but I hope to be able to pay attention and prevent anything too bad. Also, Brandedahall, sorry about the death of your character, but you were one of the only dwarves to respond.**

Worst comes to worst you can always tweak the inside warren to keep people outside the entrance hall and let the invaders pulp themselves on my weapon traps

If you remove the hospital zone, the injured military will fight regardless of injuries.

So sorry about this, I'm not going to be able to finish my turn. My laptop screen is cracked (long story short, don't place it where dogs could trample it). I'm borrowing my bro's laptop, figure I'd let you know instead of keeping you waiting.

Aww. I guess I'll tell Crocatowa to start his turn. I hope your laptop isn't too badly damaged, sepheris.

Those accursed Elves have discovered how to manipulate even real animals into doing their bidding! We must now hold back nothing! FLOOD THEIR PRECIOUS FORESTS WITH THE BLOOD OF THE MOUNTAIN! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Crocatowa rises from the earth a damaged soul, returning from his hiatus from the dwarven realms and weary from intergalactic travels

I have returned... to manage this forum... but have been bidden until further notice to not play. Armok has smitten my machine...but my new phone allows me to manage the thread at all times...
