So, the Boar won't be as effective in the mountains as the Skunk, I don't think. Bigger profile means it won't be able to use the smallest trails. However, it wouldn't be useless, so if we want to push the mountains we could still deploy there. Losing the hills wouldn't be the end of the world. That being said, I'm voting hills, just cos I don't want to risk the Sords managing to reach our capital early on. I'm not considering the city option for the moment.

I agree that the Boar would be less effective in the mountains. The hills are much more open, allowing us to hopefully gain an advantage with our new guns.

Here's my proposal for what will hopefully be something we can happily stick on a wide variety of mechs for years to come.

Quote
WehlMade 74mm Mech-Cannon (M1881):
A totally original creation of ours, any similarity to the M1866 is a total coincidence.

The frankly bizarre hybrid loading system of the M1866 is done away with, in favour of a purely breech-loading system (using more normal rifling). This makes loading faster, and significantly easier to do from within a mech. Reduced accuracy is an area of concern, but ultimately not as important as being able to load via the breech.
The other notable difference is the recoil-reduction mechanism. Based on mech limb technology, the system uses hydraulics to absorb the recoil of the gun firing. This is not intended to fully eliminate recoil, but mitigate it in order to reduce strain on a mech's structure.
Several other minor tweaks are made, based on test results from the M1866 on a Boar chassis, to optimise the M1881 for mech usage.

A version of the Boar will be produced that replaces the two 50s with a single 74.

Looks good to me.

I still kinda want to use the M1866 Rifled Cannon-9lb-76mm for something eventually though... hmm.

'Crab' Mobile Walking Cannon Battery
This very large construct is essentially a small mobile gun fortress, powered by four 'Beast' Animal Soul Engine Mk.2 to allow it to actually move. Each of the 'Beast' Animal Soul Engine Mk.2 is dedicated to one of the Crab's four legs, allowing the walking cannon battery to slowly and ponderously move forwards or sideways across the battlefield. On top of these four sprawling legs is the Crab's main body, a lightly fortified construct with a top platform that holds three M1866 Rifled Cannon-9lb-76mm, and a lower internal storage area for ammo and gunpoweder. On the same level as the lower internal storage level their are some fighting positions with light fortifications for onboard riflemen to fight from if needed for close defense. The pilot of the Crab is in front of the walker, in a cabin enclosed with a metal framework and light armor. Like the Skunk, the pilot has a separate controlling lever for each leg, able to command the legs to go forwards, backwards, or even sideways for the traditional 'crab walk'. Behind the pilot's seat is a small fold out cot and personal storage area to give the pilot somewhere to sleep in the field that's sheltered from the rain, and attachments for hammocks exist in the internal storage area to allow for the same for the gun crews.

Rolled: 7 with 0 difficulty.

The WehlMade 74mm Mech-Cannon (M1881) is all that we hoped for and more. We were able to make it fully breech loading as well as keeping the deep-cut rifling of the old system by reducing the number of rifling grooves and the according fins on the shell so it can be easily fit into the breech with careful hand guiding into the grooves. The only hang-up being the large size of the multiple recoil limbs that help eliminate a large amount of the recoil, though the cannons accuracy is just as much as the previous M1866 model of cannon.

Quote
WehlMade 74mm Mech-Cannon (M1881): Firing HE and APHE 74mm shells at an increased accuracy thanks to an overly large driving band which acts as a stabilizing system for the shell. It uses a large system of recoil springs based on mech legs suspension springs which help to reduce the recoil.

It is now the Revision phase, get to work.

Dire Boar
Let's make a version of the Boar that replaces both of its current guns with a single WehlMade 74mm Mech-Cannon. Of course, given the WehlMade 74mm Mech-Cannon is a lot larger, it won't be turreted ish like the current guns, and will instead be fixed in a forward firing position (still adjustable, not completely fixed, but only adjustable to 'degrees still pointing forwards' to simplify mounting issues for a gun that's honestly a bit oversized for the mech.

The Dire Boar was found capable of being able to mount the WehlMade 74mm Mech-Cannon, though with some drawbacks. The heavy weight of the cannon means the legs of the Dire Boar are incapable of moving at anything more than a crawl without removing much of the armor, leaving behind the section that directly protects the gun and crew, the driver keeps his armored section intact. The gun itself is mounted on a casemate capable of traversing 25 degrees total. It is only able to fire when at full stop, though not much recoil is felt when the gun fires thanks to its recoil system.

Quote
Dire Boar Mobile Cannon Walker: The Dire Boar mounts a WehlMade 74mm Mech-Cannon in a casemate at the front of the mech with 25 degrees of total traversal. It's armor is reduced to directly around the gun, engine and driver. It lumbers slowly but steadily into battle, delivering 74mm shells with excellent accuracy and manageable recoil.

Now is the time to choose where to attack with your fresh mechs, don't mess up.
