Shadow anxiously paced back and forth in the TV room while she waited from Aiko to show. Her gaze kept drifting to one of the monitors, where an uncomfortably familiar world was being broadcast. she bit at her thumbnail. It had to be some mistake. She couldn't really be expected to go back to that nightmare, could she?

She checked the door again to see if Aiko had arrived yet. It hadn't even been five seconds since she checked last.

This couldn't be happening.

Thanks to Keeper's help and advice, Aster was able to locate a world containing a Nascent Trespasser. The party gathered, and were sent through the Window to go and stop it. Unfortunately, that's about where things stopped going smoothly...

Green Greens

Bayadei, Mona, Crusher

The Window deposited Bayadei, Mona, and Crusher a few feet up in the air, dropping them down beside a quaint little cottage in a lovely green field. Crusher in particular got the short end of the stick, as he felt two soft and gooey things squish flat beneath him.

Oliver, Keeper, Score, Evelyn

The rest of the party found themselves dispensed directly underneath a palm tree next to a lovely tropical beach. There seemed to be several small, adorable creatures enjoying their time at the beach, many of them carrying cute little parasols. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, none of them appeared at all dangerous enough to be the Nascent.

As the four were sorting themselves out, a yellow and orange butterfly began to flutter towards them. This filled everyone with a deep sense of dread. This sense passed swiftly as the butterfly was revealed to not be a butterfly at all, but rather a fairy. In addition to yellow butterfly wings with orange edges, she had long silver hair with gold tips, and grey eyes. She was wearing a simple white dress with a yellow gem on the chest, and orange, ribbon-like stockings and gloves. "I'm so glad I made it in time. Are you the heroes who have come to help stop the Dark Matter?" she asked.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / [OOC] Tresspassers AE

Discord participation is mandatory. The game is generously hosted off the main Trespassers server, scroll down to find the AE channels.

Hello and welcome to yet one more Trespassers spin-off! This game is designed around maximizing character individuality and is a little more complicated at baseline than the main game, but should hopefully end up a little more intuitive in the long run.

This spin-off is about preventative maintenance. There are many beings throughout the multiverse that could potentially grow full of their home reality and spread corruption far and wide as a Trespasser. These beings are called Nascents, and the characters of this game are tasked with finding them and preventing that outcome, usually via violence. Of course, this task is far easier said than done, as any being powerful and eldritch enough to become a Trespasser is sure to put up a serious fight. And that's without considering those who might strive to bring a Nascent's power to fruition.

At the moment I intend to be sole proprietor of a romp around some of my favorite media for like 5 or 6 people, but maybe if a ton of people show interest I'll drag someone over to run a second plot alongside mine down the road.

Stats and Scaling
There are five stats, which by default only carry fairly minor mechanical benefits. In order to properly make use of a stat, you have to declare what it will be used to scale. Under normal circumstances, a stat may not be used for any other purpose than its declared use. Typically, characters must declare at least one damage type and each declaration may only be applied to one stat.

You begin with 15 stat points and gain 2 each level.

OOC thread

(OOC: Please keep in mind that at the beginning, a Ziszih is essentially a calculator that takes its surroundings as inputs and operate on them with its Emotion. Please play your character accordingly.)

? ? ?

The toiling came to an end as a man fell asleep for the last time. His last thoughts were a sadness that he couldn't read just one more word. The book that he'd been reading toppled to the ground as his arms went limp. His room was dimly lit by a lamp, but slowly, the light in his window flickers out just as his life did a few hours before. With it, the final spark of his last moments came to a close.

It awakens.

The air above the bay was not the ideal location to come into existence. Yet to be clothed, it quickly found itself toppling into the cold, dark waters below. It knew nothing, felt nothing, it simply existed. It was hungry.

? ? ?

The joyous singing ended abruptly as a flash of blue light engulfed the group. They each took a single step forward, vanishing into nothing. With the morning came the end of their quest, for now.

It awakens.

Knowing nothing of itself or its location, it could not even feel anything as the ground beneath it melted away in the sudden, raging inferno of plasma that burst into existence around it. It instinctively knew that the flames would instantly erase it from a very brief existence if it did not do something. It is already falling, its nonexistent body still prey to certain metaphysical laws. The forested world in the sky above was lit by the light of the flames, by not engulfed by them. If it wanted to survive when it came into existence again, it would have to get there.

? ? ?

Overwhelmed by loss, the flames engulfed him. None had stopped him, he hadn't let them. His pain was too overwhelming.

It awakens.

Within the blaze, it found itself in comfort. This was what sparked it, the perfect environment for it. But staying there wasn't an option. It was hungry, it needed to eat.

? ? ?

Impressed by the thief's display, the lord offered him every luxury as thanks, but he refused. The only thanks he required were her words of gratitude, declaring that he had proved himself a noble and trustworthy soul. She understood, and thanked him from the bottom of her heart.

It awakens.

The world was cold and barren, utterly devoid of life. It was cold, and its Stomach empty. It would not last long against the elements unless it found a way to fill itself. In the distance, a mountain smoked violently, warning that it would soon rush forth and decimate everything nearby. Several other mountains could be seen nearby, but none shook and sputtered in the same way. Aside from the mountains, there were no other landmarks that it could use to navigate towards something worth eating.

Spoiler: Hook (click to show/hide)

What's This?
This is a cutely morbid roleplay where you play as a monster that literally everyone is terrified of. Everything is cute and fun and happy on the surface, but horrifying and grotesque just beneath. The plot will seem quite simple at first, focusing on the Seven Crowns and what the hell is up with them, but you can expect things to spiral in absolutely insane directions. Sadly I can't give much more detail because I don't want to spoil the wild shit I have planned. If you're familiar with The Tenth God or Lunatic Advance, this is set in the same multiverse as those games, but, like, with the what the fuck factor turned up to 11.

Since there's not a lot I can say outright, if you're vaguely interested, feel free to ask questions on the Discord and I will do my best to answer them.

Setting
The game is set in the Seven Stars, a group of vaguely planet-ish things floating around each other in space. Physics do not care. These planets range a wide variety of climates from temperate forest to ice cream hills and everything in between. The inhabitants vary across an equally wide variety of species.

The Seven Stars
The various races

Mechanics
All power comes from Source, the fundamental energy of the universe itself which can be given form by emotions. When a strong enough emotional event occurs, Source can even take on a humanoid form. This form has many names depending on what race you ask, but the one name that can be universally agreed on is "Devourer." But I like the name the Snakes use, so we're going to use that instead.

Stomach
All Ziszih are sustained by a virtually infinite regenerative ability that acts more swiftly depending on the contents of their Stomach. The more energy contained in their Stomach, the harder they become to kill. If a Ziszih's stomach is emptied, the reverse effect begins as their own bodies break down in place of the contents of their empty Stomach.

Power
Power is the capability of Ziszih to alter the world of their immediate surroundings.
  • Happiness - A Ziszih with the Power of Happiness will have slow, powerful attacks.
  • Confidence - The Power of Confidence takes the form of direct, skillful assaults.
  • Terror - The Power of Terror attacks wildly and indiscriminately. It has the weakest raw power, but will cause by far the most destruction in the long run.
Bond
Bond is the medium through which Ziszih effect others from afar.
  • Trust - Like Happiness, the Bond of Trust is slow and powerful.
  • Respect - The Bond of Respect takes on the same direct, skillful traits and Confidence.
  • Guilt - The Bond of Guilt is scattered and wild, quickly growing out of hand like its Power counterpart.
Freedom
Freedom is the means by which Ziszih can traverse the world.
  • Celerity - Freedom of Celerity is light-footed and flexible, able to move in unexpected ways and dodge all sorts of attacks easily.
  • Stride - Going very quickly in a straight line comes from the Freedom of Stride, which is unwavering.
  • Transience - The Freedom of Transience causes movement that seems counter to the normal way of things, allowing for all kinds of strange strategies.
Self
  • Heart protects the Self by guarding.
  • Soul protects the Self by defying.
  • Empty protects the Self by absorbing.
Emotion
All Ziszih possess an Emotion, a unique power that represent their fundamental being. This is their most powerful strength, beyond any of their other attributes. An Emotion cannot be taken away or destroyed. If a Ziszih's Emotion is lost, they die instantly.

Having set off for the kingdom of Balthar, Hagen Albin and his two trusted companions must first cross the treacherous lands of Renmar. They stay the night at a village on the border, resting in a bed for what may be the last time before their journey reaches its end. Although their travels are sure to be difficult, their mission is of the utmost importance, leaving no time to waste...

"He was perfectly behaved, you must have an excellent trainer back home." the stable hand complimented Astrid as he handed her the reins.

Retrieving Astrid's horse was the last bit of preparation the three travelers had to do before setting out. The next leg of their journey would take them into Renmar, only a small river lay in their way. Once their, things would become much more dangerous, so they were taking their time packing up.

8
Danger stirs within the High Kingdom of Talstas. The power hungry Kingdom of Enfir has attacked it’s militant neighbor Balthar, seeking to lay its claim to Balthar’s rich resources. Though powerful, Balthar proves incapable of standing alone against the mighty Enfirian magic. In a desperate attempt to fight back, Balthar begs the aid of its peaceful ally, Alketh. A young noble, the king of Alketh’s nephew, is dispatched to meet with the King of Balthar and discuss an alliance.

Yet something more sinister waits beneath the surface. A deep power has been raising the dead across the land, villagers are being attacked frequently by both bandit and monster alike, and entire tribes of beastkin have vanished into thin air. Faced with these challenges and more, the young noble must gather a group of powerful allies to his side if he hopes to protect the home he loves from the evil that surrounds it.

What’s This?
This is a test of my Simplified Fire Emblem on the Forums system, AKA SimpFEF. The manual talks a bit more about that, so I’m going to focus on the story here. This story is meant to be a very straightforward and basic FE story about a hapless lordlet who finds himself caught up in a clash for the fate of the continent. There will be spooky monsters, mysterious sages, a scheming sorcerer, and possibly even an evil dragon.

The other players will take on roles in the story around the noble, playing roles such as loyal friends, helpful guides, or stiff warriors. Through a healthy dose of teamwork and friendship, they will help the young noble pave the way towards heroism.

Specific Rules/Testing Expectations
The game will be played in casual format with 3 wounds. EXP will be gained based on the damage calculation with pity levels when 5 levels behind. Growths will be random. I'll be expecting active map participants to post extremely regularly to help keep up a good pace through maps. You'll also be expected to actively discuss turns in the Discord. So before placing yourself in the active group, please ensure you'll be available to converse, not just post a move when prompted.

Due to the heavily experimental nature of this RP, I expect to be actively balancing as I go. This will make things fairly unstable, and even the weapons in your inventory (especially those) may change between maps.

Casting Call
The following are the roles to be filled before the story can begin. Extras are welcome once these roles are filled, although I’ll be a bit choosy about what goes through (If six performers wanted the Special Friend slot, I am not going to suddenly let them all in). I’m not putting down a hard maximum for players, but individual maps may have a limit on how many extras I allow.

Classes do not have a ton of associated lore, but your primary base class and intended final class should at the very least not contradict your role in the story.

Map 1
Lord (Unique class, will discuss)
The child of the Duke of Vitra and the main protagonist of the story. Someone who cares about injustice and is willing to fight to make a stand.

Knight Archetype (Cav, Knight, Archer, etc)
A close retainer of the Duke and childhood friend of the main Lord.

Healer (Cleric, Troubadour, or Nurse)
A healer in the employ of the Duke, entrusted with the Lord’s wellbeing.

Map 2
An Unexpected Friend (Basically any physical foot unit)
An unlikely ally willing to assist in a time of need. Has a reason for why they’re traveling through the forests of Renmar.

Map 3
Obligatory Magic User (Mage, Monk, Dark Mage, Tactician)
A mage of any kind traveling for their own reasons. Willing to fight monsters.

Obligatory Flier (Peg. Knight, Peg. Scout, Wyv. Rider)
A flier of any kind, sent by a friend of the Duke or as a messenger from Balthar (discuss for the latter).

Map 4
Lovable Scoundrel (Thief, Hunter, Pirate, etc)
Someone who isn’t exactly on the up-and-up, but still willing to help out with their roguish charm.  May or may not actually be up to something (can discuss).

A Special Friend (Performer, Villager, Beastkin, Manakete)
A person of unusual origin caught up in the events of the story (must discuss).

Main Cast
Hagen (Lord)
Astrid (Knight Archetype)
Valerie (Healer)
Cadence (Unexpected Friend)
Benedict (Obligatory Magic User)
Judith (Obligatory Flier)
Lulu (Lovable Scoundrel)
Nima (Special Friend)

Important NPCs
Amara (Battle Granny)

March 12, 1994, around 2:00AM...

Her breathing was heavy as she fled down the platform. Terror clutched at her heart far more tightly than she could have ever imagined. She felt a weak sense of regret at taking that extra smoke after work. If she had left right away, she wouldn't have been late. And now she was being chased through the subway by a phantom. It should have been easy to escape, the path back up wasn't far, but her thoughts and vision both felt like distorted lies. The only thing she could trust was that death was directly behind her, she would die if she stopped running. It was too late when she felt herself fall, her fate was already sealed. In her panic, she'd let it run her off the platform.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / [IC] Saint Mecha X

"You are Saint Mecha X." Sensei Shirou finished his speech.

It was certainly an inspiring pep talk, but it was hardly enough for the newly christened Saint Mecha X. They all had some level of experience with mecha, but the mecha they knew were tools. Most of them hadn't even been inside the combat mecha Sensei had given them. Yuta and Lee had arrived a month prior, so they had some time to fit a bit of practice in, but Hiro had only made it to Sanctum Lighthouse mere hours before Sensei raised the alarm.

The Lighthouse's computers had detected an Enemy attack near Theophilus, one of the smaller villages towards the bottom of the mountain. It looked like it would be a small attack, but it was only the opening salvo. Now that the Enemy had begun its siege, they all knew the attacks would come regularly. Once a week, that's what Saint Mecha had to contend with. A relentless foe that tried their strength every week, growing stronger with each attempt.

That fight was now the duty of Saint Mecha X. A duty they had all signed up for, but one that none of them truly knew if they were prepared for.

Week 0 - Theophilus Battle
Layout
Enemy Types:
Basic Enemy

Wave 1
Detected Units: Basic Enemy x13
Detected Nodes: 1, 2, 3

A new type of enemy approached, but one very different from those of the past. While the Enemy of Saint Mecha had built strangely shaped mecha with specific purpose in mind, the Enemy of Saint Mecha X had opted to mimic the adaptability of human mecha. The incomprehensible gems that seemed to control Enemy mecha were mounted in the center of the body, giving them an eerie, cyclops-like eye.

The Enemy was approaching across three bridges, its new units charging forward in a faceless horde across the three bridges. Their bright red claws were outstretched to tear into any human mecha foolish enough to stand in their way. They were now halfway across the bridges, the invisible line in the sand that meant the time for battle had truly come. All that remained was for the vanguard of humanity to meet them in that battle.

Sensei Shirou was listening in from the Lighthouse, ready to offer advice or encouragement to his charges, but he couldn't offer them the ability to win. To find that, they would have to reach within. And they would have to do it quickly, before the Enemy made it across and began wreaking havoc on the innocent village beyond.

A generation has come and gone since I and the other members of Saint Mecha drove off the Enemy invasion at the Battle of Tenchii Bridge. Since then the Enemy has remained silent, biding its time and preparing to march once more. Saint Mecha kept a vigilant watch for the day the enemy would reemerge. I alone now stand watch over our tenuous peace. And regrettably, I must now drag others into the battle that Saint Mecha and I were never able to finish.

The Enemy is stirring, the time has come for them to once again seek the eradication of all human life on Mount Sanctum. I cannot stop them alone, and that is why I called on each of you.

You are our future. Bright minded young psychics who can pilot the mecha that will defend us all from the Enemy. You are our freedom. Our chance to finally push the Enemy back and make this mountain live up to its name. You are our hope. The wings on which we will soar to greater and greater heights, carving the name of humanity into the annals of history as the ones who refused to give up in the face of insurmountable odds.

You are Saint Mecha X.

Discord

Setting

Hidden within the nooks and crannies of the fractured Mount Sanctum lie thirty villages. Their origins long-forgotten, the residents of these villages seek only to survive. But the mountain is a treacherous place. Across the Great Fracture there is an immense danger: The Enemy, a seemingly endless swarm of attackers whose goal seems to be the eradication of humanity. The only thing that stands in their way is the seemingly endless network of bridges that cross the Fracture.

The Enemy side of the mountain is covered with strange black machinery, giving it a deeply ominous feeling.

The mountain is a mysterious place full of long-lost secrets and ancient technologies. The origins of both the Enemy and humanity have been long forgotten, and rediscovering them has always taken a backseat to survival.

Escaping the mountain is generally considered impossible due to the treacherous jungle at its base that spans far and wide in every direction. A few have attempted to explore in flying mecha, soaring to the other mountains in the distance. But as they have never returned, it is impossible to say if they succeeded and chose to flee or simply perished.

Combat

Combat will be done in a guided freeform manner. Everything will be RP’d out without any direct interference from mechanical systems, however what is possible will be defined--and in some cases heavily limited--by a mechanical system beneath.

The Enemy will attack like clockwork, giving the players a week between assaults. During this week the mechanical side of the RP will come into play to govern what the players can do to prepare.

The goal of the players will be to prevent the Enemy forces from reaching and destroying a target, usually a village full of innocent people. Some combats may have multiple targets or multiple waves of attackers. A layout of relevant bridges and potential attackers will be provided immediately before each combat. More info here.

Fights will take place on a system of bridges between the two halves of the mountain, simultaneously restricting and encouraging mobility. They will primarily focus on whatever attachments the involved mecha have equipped and their unique traits, but things such as pilot skill, previous damage, and even the weather will come into play.

Speaking of damage, damage will be sustained in two forms: major and minor damage. Despite the names, these are not measures of severity, but rather situation. Any damage dealt directly by an opponent is major damage and will potentially impact the mecha throughout the rest of the fight. Minor damage, on the other hand, is not immediately noticeable and will only be revealed at the end of combat, impacting the next if it is not repaired.

In addition to sustaining damage, mecha can fail entirely, forcing a pilot to eject. Players will only die if their ejection system is damaged prior to mecha failure, and ejection damage can only be taken as minor damage, meaning a minimum of two fights are required to die. Further, you will rarely experience a total failure without already having a damaged mecha before combat, leaving plenty of time to recover.

When a mecha is destroyed, the pilot will have to find some way to construct a new one and will be unable to participate in combat again until they do.

At the end of combat all players are semi-arbitrarily rewarded EXP based on their performance and Enemy mecha are automatically salvaged for materials and technology.

Mecha

Mecha are large mechanical suits that are designed to traverse rough terrain more freely than traditional vehicles. They’re generally around 18ft (5.5m) tall.

The standard design has a simple T-shaped torso frame. The legs make up about half the height of the mecha and have their knees about 2/3rds of the way up, making for rather short upper legs. The feet are sturdy but flexible boot-like constructs that can easily find stability on rough surfaces. The arms reach halfway down the legs and have the elbows right at halfway. They have large hands made for easily grasping tools.

Armor is primarily placed around the lower legs and arms, as protecting the entire mecha would be heavy. This armor is wide and slanted to make it better at deflecting attacks away from the mecha. There is also a bit of armor placed along the top of the torso, to protect the core and any back attachments, which extends over the shoulders in a pseudo-pauldron.

The pilot is harnessed onto the front of the torso, with a variety of levels, buttons, and pedals protruding around them to allow control of the mecha. A large windscreen covers them from the front, protecting against the elements and enemy attacks both. This windscreen can be retracted to make space for a ladder, allowing the pilot to easily mount or dismount the mecha.

Basic mecha as described above typically have three colors. An infrastructure color, usually greyscale as painting the infrastructure is inefficient and doesn’t add much. A primary color, which is used for the main armor plating and some larger pieces of infrastructure. And a secondary color which is used for detailing and decals.

Mecha always have a power source, infrastructure type, and armor type. No mecha can be constructed without all three of these components.

Each mecha also has a unique trait that sets it apart from the others. This trait can be virtually anything, from a general design philosophy to a specific piece of technology. For example, a mecha intended to be better for aerial combat might have a general design of having thinner armor and fins attached to its arms and legs, or it might have a pair of large air intakes attached to each shoulder. The possibilities are fairly limitless, although mecha traits are not usually massively impactful. Traits are there to give mecha specialization and a sense of uniqueness, not to massively strengthen the mecha.

Levels, AP, and Skills

Between combats, players will be given time to perform a variety of actions that cost AP. For convenience, these may be done at any time between combats. Actions may be posted immediately and RP’d out after, posted as they are RP’d, posted after being RP’d, or posted at any time and not RP’d at all. AP is refreshed after each combat and cannot be stored, any unused AP will be scrapped.

Players may use their AP to do tasks for other players as well, and in fact it’s expected and will generally be more efficient than everyone doing all actions for themselves.

Each mechanical action will have an AP cost tied to it, and each type of action has a connected skill that reduces the cost of actions of that type by 1 AP per stat point, to a minimum of 1. One skill point is gained per level, and may be allocated freely to any skill. Each action type will be covered on its own later.

Players gain a level every time they reach 100 EXP. EXP will be granted after each battle based on performance, and exactly how much is gained will be somewhat arbitrary. Ejecting will immediately cost one full level and half of your current EXP, as well as preventing you from gaining any EXP for the battle in which it happens.

Max AP is equal to 2*level, although RP events may result in arbitrary reductions or increases to max AP at the GM’s discretion. Your total number of skill points is always equivalent to your level. The maximum level is 15.

Neon, Ookami (Arena)

It was early, so Neon would have expected the arena to be quiet when she arrived. Ookami had probably expected that too, as he'd set up to have tea in advance of the noise. But quiet and Four didn't much belong in the same room. The chaotic young woman was somehow managing to have an impassioned battle against herself while she waited for someone to take interest in sparring with her. It was like a one-woman play. An extremely melodramatic, totally improv one-woman play. Marita, who had come in shortly after Four, seemed totally engrossed, although it was impossible to tell whether she was actually interested or just staring at a trainwreck.

Celica, Aleks, Elspeth (Audience Chamber)

The Hellfire Knight was a busy person, she had a lot of people see to and a lot of work to do. So although a time had been set aside where the challengers were free to visit her, three of them had gathered over the course of half an hour before she actually had time to pay attention to them. She sent away the last person she was meeting with and called the challengers up to her desk. Arcturus was with her, having been advising her on matters throughout the day. He seemed significantly less bothered by how long and stressful the day had been, perhaps because he didn't have any direct interactions with the people the Hellfire Knight had been meeting with.

Maddie, Tarmo (Challenger Cafeteria)

Shouting echoed through the cafeteria as Maddie and Tarmo transported in. It wasn't a standard mealtime, so it was unlikely to be the result of a crowd. The source was coming from a pair of diners in the middle of the room. They were on their feet as they argued, with no table between them. A fallen table a few feet away suggested a possible destination for where theirs had gone. The room's third occupant was a woman with long, dark blue hair that was giving the arguing pair the stink eye. She wasn't in uniform or behind the counter, but it was easy enough to recognize Chef Francis.

The first of the arguing pair was too famous to go unrecognized, although seeing Trinity this enraged made him nearly unrecognizable anyways. The man across from him was an enigma, however, wearing a hoodie and sunglasses that made it impossible to guess who he was underneath.

"I said I was sorry!" Hoodie Guy shouted, "I honestly didn't know!"

"You shouldn't have to be sorry, because you shouldn't have said it in the first place!" Trinity's voice was hoarse, he didn't have much practice with loud arguments.

"It's what I do, I get under people's skin!" Hoodie Guy looked like he was going to defend himself further but then stopped, "Look, this isn't how I wanted this to go. I crossed a line, I get that. That's why I asked you here to apologize."

Trinity folded and unfolded his arms, as if he was struggling to be angry. "Dammit Derreth, you always do this." He punched Hoodie Guy, Derreth, in the shoulder just hard enough to prompt a wince of pain, "I know you were just acting, we're both acting out there, but you really hurt me that time. You need to be more careful about how far you push things. If you want to win by tormenting your opponents, you can't just expect them to turn around and be your friend afterwards."

"I know that, but..." Derreth shrugged, "I dunno, some friendships are worth fighting for?"

Trinity facepalmed, "You know, you're kind of a dumbass."

"Both of you are dumbasses." Chef Francis's harsh voice cut into the conversation, "I cannot tell if you are going to blows or to bed after this, perhaps both. Either way, you've made a terrible mess of my cafeteria. Clean it up, or I will revoke your meal privileges."

Caridin (Library)

The library wasn't especially large. Five or six shelves lined on either side with books and an open area off to the side with a few desks. But even considering its small surface area, the wealth of knowledge within was huge. Gathering so many books into one place was impractical at best, yet here it had been done purely for the sake of a few mech pilots. The gods really were serious about helping the challengers grow.

There was a single occupant sitting at one of the desks. He was an attractive young man with dark skin and curly black hair. He'd noticed Caridin entering, but hadn't voiced a greeting or even really indicated he cared, only briefly raising his head to peek a look at the teleporter when it activated.

She couldn't hold back the tears as she sobbed uncontrollably. It was too much for her, she wasn't strong enough. The heaved breaths of panic clutched at her throat, dragging her deeper into its depths. She couldn't do it anymore, she didn't have any fight left in her. It was over.

"It's okay Lilith." Arturia whispered, wrapping Lilith in a hug. Her face was scratched from the lashing of the shadowy tendrils that surrounded Lilith, but somehow she managed to ignore the pain for Lilith's sake.

Lilith tried to respond, but the best she could manage was an anguished wail. She couldn't do this, no matter how much Arturia supported her, she just didn't have the strength to keep fighting. "I'm sorry." she sobbed, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

"It's okay Lilith, you're okay." Arturia reassured her, "I'm here for you, you don't have to fight anymore."

Lilith nodded weakly. "Okay."

Arturia let go of her and stood up. A chill ran through Lilith, it always felt so cold when Arturia let go of her. With one last loving smile in Lilith's direction, Arturia drew her sword and charged Kallisto.

But there was no fight. In an instant, Kallisto's fingers were wrapped around Arturia's throat, fingernails drawing blood from the force of her grip. "You're an idiot, Arturia." she sneered, "Genuinely stupid. What's wrong with you? She's not worth saving, and yet you keep sacrificing for her. Well now you have nothing left to sacrifice, she doesn't even have enough power left to summon Vi-Ra-Nor. This is the end of the line."

"Fuck... you... bitch." Arturia choked defiantly.

Kallisto pulled the lever to open the incinerator door. "Fuck yourself, I'm sure it'll be hot." Kallisto's face contorted with raw contempt as she flung Arturia into the inferno.

As Arturia was flung to her death, her eyes met Lilith's for what may well have been the very first time. The terror in those tear-filled eyes was burned into Lilith's memories. It was her fault, Arturia was fighting for her. And now Arturia would die afraid and alone, for her. An ear-splitting screech tore out of Lilith's lungs, drowning out Arturia's screams as she burned alive. It was too late, but she stood up. She had to fight, for Arturia. Everything. Everything before now and everything after. All of it, it was all for Arturia.

OOC thread

Captain Emily Astarotte stared blankly at the little book in her hands. It went against everything she believed, everything she'd worked for. She desperately wished she could take back the wisp of nostalgia that had prompted her to return to the old library. This book was simply awful, a blasphemous work. And yet the words screamed to her very soul that they were true. Everything had been so simple. She had worked so hard to be the best. She had wanted to serve her country, to spread the virtues around the world and prevent evil from running amok. And now this, when she'd finally achieved her goal. She had been set to deploy that very afternoon, and had only stopped by the library to say one final goodbye to the place she'd spent most of her teenage years. It was an ancient building that had stood for longer than history could recall. Nearly destroyed by ancient wars, renovated dozens of times, turned into a museum, and finally restored to its original purpose a few years before Emily was born. She had often gone there as an escape when life seemed out of balance. But now, now that same place of safety had turned to the source of discord.

Emily knew everything as it had been, she knew what she had planned. And now all of it was so small. Her goal hadn't changed, it had just gotten a lot harder to achieve. She hadn't wanted this, but it was hers now. The truth. She would serve her country and spread the virtues, but to do that she would have to tear them both down first. It wouldn't be easy, but the truth had to prevail.

Kira and Monika

When they'd been informed that a holy weapon user had appeared, Kira and Monika had been prepared to handle it. They hadn't been prepared for this.

It was customary for all regular soldiers to retreat when a holy weapon came into play. The holy weapon user would have a few minutes to wreak havoc before their counterparts arrived, but the battle would truly be decided by the fight that followed. There's were a lot of reasons for why this was, most of them rooted in tradition. Some saw it as a way to prevent holy weapon users from doing too much damage, others a way to mitigate the risk of a holy weapon being taken out by a stray bullet in a more chaotic battle, and most simply went along with it because that's how it had always been done.

No one had retreated from this battlefield.

It had been a small patrol, but Kira and Monika had been in charge of that patrol. They'd broken off for a moment to talk, and in the thirty seconds it took them to return after the warning came through, the woman in front of them had managed a total victory. Neridus had a few holy weapons capable of that, but intel didn't place any of them in the area. The nearest holy weapon was supposed to be an hour away at Nana's Cave, near the Stone Ocean. This wasn't even worth the time, it was just a small probe, nothing that should have warranted such an aggressive response.

Yet here they were, two dozen bodies sprawled across the ground. Half of them were clearly alive, breathing heavily or groaning in pain. Most of the rest were unconscious or dead, but not clearly either. One had splattered against a tree. The woman didn't seem interested in the bodies, living or gruesome dead. She wasn't interested in Kira and Monika either. Her attention was on the small phone she held to her ear. It seemed they were deep enough into Neridus to get call service.

She looked up when she noticed she had company. "Gotta call ya back, pair of chicks just showed up, probably lookin' for a fight." she spoke up, making sure Kira and Monika could hear. "I got what I need." she called to them, "You can go, I ain't gonna mess with you or any of the rest."

She rested her bat over her shoulders, a leisurely pose. She dressed just as casually, her outfit reminiscent of baseball, a rather frowned upon pastime. The cap she wore concealed her face a bit, but she was too small for the effect to be particularly intimidating. It became even less so when she parted her lips to blow a bright pink bubble. She was mocking them, casually flaunting the fact that she wasn't afraid. Her words said she didn't want to fight, but her body language was practically begging them to attack her.

Eilyth

"Alright Lieutenant, you're up."

Naive was the best word for her. She was too young for this, she didn't understand the consequences. It was like she totally forgot about the battlefield the instant she was off it. And worst of all, she was good at what she did. Sometimes the Church propped up naive officers like Captain Leah for political reasons, but Eilyth's cheery commander wasn't one of those. Leah was quick-witted, confident, and charismatic, all great traits for an officer. Even if she never shook her naivete, it wasn't hard to imagine her with a major command down the line.

Today's plan was the standard one that Eilyth had been employed for dozens of times before. In other words she was bait. Patricia was her backup for this op, the two had been working together for nearly two years now. In many ways they were similar, both of them had caused problems for their superiors, both had their troubles with family, and they were both rather masculine in appearance. But Patricia was an intentional troublemaker, someone who went out of her way to cause problems. Where Eilyth sought to prove herself and overcome her familial troubles, Patricia had run from them. And while Eilyth was stuck with her appearance, Patrica had intentionally ignored her bombshell figure because she could. She also made it no secret that she wanted to put her head between Eilyth's legs.

Patricia was twirling her knife to produce an aura of black fog. She was either preparing to fight or just showing off, they were basically the same thing to Patricia. It was difficult to read Patricia's face behind her sunglasses, but Eilyth knew her partner well enough that she didn't have to. Patricia was bored. They'd been fishing on the Tyranian border for several days now, traveling across Nyght and now into Hymn. If they went much further they'd find themselves in Neridus, near Haley's Sister, and they did not want to be anywhere near Haley's Sister. It was troublesome to do nothing, but these fishing trips weren't really much of anything in the first place. They rarely actually killed any Tyranian holy weapon users, and those they did were usually just Ladies. The Tyranians were probably wise to the trap. Without an actual force behind them, Eilyth and company weren't much of a real threat.

If that was true, then Eilyth was about to go sweat to death in the hot summer sun for an hour while nothing happened for the sixth day in a row. Patricia was bored, but at least she got to wait in her tent.

Silvia and L

"Go wake the captain." Cay had said it so matter-of-factly, like it was an easy task. Silvia knew better. This was a punishment, trying to awaken their lethargic captain was like being sent out to collect monkeys from the ocean. Even if you managed to pull it off, you'd still have to deal with a bunch of wet monkeys. Captain L could be awoken, but getting her to stay awake was a huge pain.

Worse was why Silvia had to wake her. They'd been called back to the capital after their entire company of enlisted was decimated by an opposing holy weapon. It had been almost a month of deliberating on the part of their superiors, and the verdict was finally going to come down. L was going to take the fall for certain, and she'd probably be ousted from the army.

L's quarters were a bit smaller than most, perhaps a joke by the higher ups about L's stature. If you made a relative size comparison, she probably had some of the largest quarters in the entire army. It might not have been a problem for L, but for any of her underlings trying to wake her, it just made the act that much more uncomfortable.

What's This?
This is Remembrance, also called ANKL sometimes. Remembrance is a character driven story set in a vast world built to feel as real as possible, oftentimes more real than reality. It is driven by pain and sadness, such that moments of triumph and joy shine all the brighter. Reflecting my own experiences and struggles with mental illness and abuse, Remembrance aims to create meaning out of suffering, and hopefully tell an interesting story along the way. It is not for the faint of heart, but I like to think it's more than just a black hole with a thousand knives at the center. Even if a darker tone isn't to your taste, I'd still encourage you to give the RP a closer look, I like to think it's a lot more optimistic than it appears at a glance.

Among the main goals of the RP is for the characters to grow beyond characters, becoming fully fleshed out people whose decisions may surprise even their own creators. Rather than being avatars of their player, they are distinct, with their own histories, personalities, and lives. This allows for the character-driven narrative to flourish, placing characters into interesting situations within the world and allowing them to respond and grow in response to adversity.

Setting
The world of Remembrance is a cruel place where religion and politics reign over a largely unsuspecting populous always on the verge of destruction. Monsters roam freely, threatening to tear entire cities limb from limb. Men are widely enslaved, forced to serve society in dangerous roles. And war threatens to cut life short all across the globe. It is a far from pretty world, and yet for many it remains a happy one. Perhaps those people are just blinded by dogma, or perhaps there truly is something worth living for in this goddessforsaken world. Whatever the case, people live here, and they fight to keep living. Though it may not be a wonderful world, to the people living in this RP, it's the only one they have.

Technologically, the world sits somewhere in the 80s-00s range, depending on the exact area. Things are fairly similar to reality, save for one marked distinction: No wings. Although a potentially powerful technology, the ability to fly through means more complex than a hot air balloon has remained elusive for centuries. Yet this elusive technology is on the brink of discovery. Airships have recently taken flight, and with the barrier finally shattered, it likely won't be long before aerospace technology makes its final leap into the modern day.

Geographically, the world is split into three continents, with the majority of the RP taking place on the middle one. Specifically, the stories told center on the small, seemingly insignificant country of Katria. Once the seat of a mighty empire that spanned the entire continent and beyond, now embroiled in an endless war to take back its former glory. Although this would seem a fruitless endeavor, mandatory military service and a wealth of holy weapons have allowed the imperial remnant to remain a thorn in the world's side for generations.

To Katria's north lies Neridus. A small country itself until very recently, Neridus has rapidly expanded into an empire in its own right, spreading through the might of technology and cultural innovation. By effectively assimilating conquered lands, it has managed to grow to its current size seemingly unhindered. However, despite clear advantages in technology, logistics, and size, Neridus has been halted in its southern advance by Katria, which has taken far more resources to conquer than anticipated.

Southward is Tyran, a collection of smaller states once ruled by the empire. Katria seeks to reconquer these lands, but Tyran takes a stance of quality over quantity when it comes to holy weapon meisters, which has allowed it to outlast its former master, continually growing in influence as Katria slowly shrivels.

To the west is Lanica, a small mercantile country that once housed the trade capital of the world, and now serves as a capital of crime. Destroyed during the imperial collapse, Lanica would have been easy pickings for Katria at any point in history, were it still worth conquering. Due to its strategic location and regularly experiences with uprisings and coups, Lanica is a common target for puppetry by larger countries. The powerful few live in luxury, supported by foreign benefactors or criminal empires, while the rest languish in a state often worse than mere poverty, desperately hoping for a way out. Things do seem to be looking up for Lanica, however. A successful rebellion has recently instituted the first free government since the country's founding. Whether or not this fledgling rebirth can last remains to be seen.

Holy Weapons and Religion
A key component of the world of Remembrance are the mystical tools known as holy weapons. Integrally tied into society, warfare, and religion, they are a rope that binds the setting together. In other words, this is the power system. I'll run through exactly how you make a holy weapon for your PC during the section on character creation, but for now I'll be focusing on outlining the way holy weapons work in and of themselves. And that means I need to talk about religion.

Most places in the world follow some form of the Katrian religion. This religion is centered on ten virtues, the first eight of which are assigned in pairs to four goddesses, with the last two typically being assigned to the church or some other collective entity. These virtues are also further tied into ten matching elements, which fuel the powers of holy weapons. These element-virtue-goddess associations serve as the backbone for both the crafting of weapons and the understanding of religion. Many of the unusual effects of each element only make sense through the lens of the associated virtue, so I'll be combining these explanations for clarity.

Character Creation
The most significant aspects of making a character for Remembrance are her personality and her holy weapon. These two aspects are entwined, as the Element of a character's holy weapon is determined by the Virtue they are most lacking in. As such, you should typically write a personality and determine an element before you begin working on your weapon.

Holy weapons typically have a single cohesive power, alongside any minor abilities (strength, heat resistance, etc) required to prevent the character from being harmed by her own weapon. If a weapon has a second distinct ability or a particularly powerful ability, then it will suffer the downside of lacking some of the protections it would normally come with. A third ability guarantees that the weapon will absolutely trash its owner when used. A weapon with more than three abilities cannot exist.

The shape of a holy weapon should reflect what it does in some way, and the more powerful the ability, the more directly the form it takes should demonstrate what that power is, and the less likely it is to be literally shaped like a weapon. Some unlucky folks are saddled with a weapon painfully integrated directly into their body. Holy weapons are primarily made out of metal and gem-like structures with colors representing their element.

For your first primary character, you'll be creating a Katrian either in the military as an officer or having left it after their mandatory service ended. Once you have clearly established that character with at least two complete scenes, you'll be allowed to submit a secondary character from anywhere in the world. This second character must have a different element from your primary and cannot have any direct connection to them. In both cases, please feel free to ask for character help in the Discord channel, the world is big and complicated and I am very far from getting all possible relevant information for making a character into this post.

If a character dies or is retired, you may replace them with a new character immediately. If this is your primary, then you may promote your secondary and make a new secondary instead of making a fresh primary. You may also switch the two entirely at the end of an Arc if you please. Primary characters will be incorporated into the current main plotline if possible, while secondary characters will be used to explore the world and participate in smaller scale subplots.

Premise
Since the inception of mankind there have been countless threats to our survival as a species, threats we have faced head on and overcome time and time again. But hidden beneath the surface hides the deadliest threat of them all, an ancient enemy that plagues every living being across the globe, one which not even humanity has been able to overcome.

I speak, of course, of disease. A pervasive foe that all living creatures will inevitably contend with, yet one we will never be able to face head on. Or at least that’s what most people think.

Walking among us are beings known as Incubators, creatures that use the power of disease to strengthen themselves. Their supernatural abilities draw strength from those suffering their associated malady, as well as the fear and respect it draws in the public eye. They can even extend their own lives by taking the lives of others, as each person who dies to a disease will give over their remaining life to the associated Incubator.

Though powerful, Incubators are not beyond understanding or defeat. For the past twenty-five years, the ICAO has made it our mission to learn as much as we can about Incubators so that we may follow in the steps of our ancestors, and overcome the threat that Incubators pose.

The ICAO
Established in 1997, the Incubator Containment and Analysis Organization is a secret branch of the US government that was created specifically to deal with the recently revealed Incubator threat. Officially operating under the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a small task force dedicated to combating bioterrorism, the ICAO protects humanity not only from the threat of Incubators, but the knowledge that such creatures even exist.

As the name suggests, the ICAO is dedicated to learning as much as possible about Incubators and stepping in where necessary to contain them. In some extreme cases even going so far as to terminate major threats.

Our primary goal is to discover and catalogue as many incubators as possible, logging their threat class and potential. Currently our catalogue lists over 120 known Incubators, and we are always in the process of hunting down more.

Where possible, we make an effort to bring Incubators under our control, using their unique abilities to help give us a leg up that we might otherwise lack in more extreme confrontations. Many of our agents operate in pairs with a partner Incubator.

Tamed Incubators
The ICAO does not take a passive stance with Incubators, and actively seek to recruit them when we can. We call these tamed Incubators, and they are deeply important to our success. Without their supernatural powers, our agents would be at a clear disadvantage, but employing Incubators ourselves helps us even the playing field.

Tamed Incubators are recruited through various manners, but most commonly are tamed immediately after being brought in for cataloguing by a comm agent. It’s also not infrequent that Incubators that had to be contained choose to join us when presented with no other alternative. Incubators who are tamed from containment are fitted with a kill switch to prevent them from using it as an opportunity to escape.

With only a couple of exceptions, all tamed Incubators are partnered with a field agent that serves as their handler.

Agents
Although tamed Incubators usually serve as the main method of fighting dangerous targets, our field agents are the true backbone of the organization. Combat is a rarity, and the uniquely human skills an agent brings are key to achieving our core mission.

Agents operating under the ICAO are drawn from a variety of sources and have diverse skillsets. Most are simply classified under the broad terminology of “agent,” which encompasses a wide variety of individuals. While these are the vast majority of our agents, there are some more restrictive roles that certain agents specialize in.

Communication agents are the go to when making contact with an unstable Incubator. They show special skill in diplomacy and psychology, and are well equipped for handling all but the most hostile of Incubators nonviolently.

Discovery agents are tasked with following leads to new Incubators. While all agents may be called on to investigate suspected Incubators, discovery agents are those who find the suspects to investigate in the first place. Often operating on loose hunches and barebones leads, discovery agents have the perseverance to last through dozens of fruitless cases just to find one Incubator.

Terminator agents are those skilled enough at combat to make them a threat to even B ranked Incubators. They serve as our last line of defense against Incubators that prove impossible to contain, and as enforcers within our ranks who prevent tamed Incubators from going rogue. This combination of roles means that they are often partnered with the most dangerous tamed Incubators, who can assist them in fighting major dangers and who they can keep in line if the need arises.

Plot?
This is the first section I get to break character in, so I’m gonna take a moment aside to say hello, I’m Lexi, I run RPs. This RP is gonna be a little unusual for me, and maybe for everyone else too. There’s not really gonna be an overarching plot, at least not at first. Instead, the characters will be given smaller, individualized plots to work through. While I’m sure I’ll find ways to intersect these plots, the primary focus for each pair of partners will be one on another and the case they’re working on.

Basically, think of this RP as being several smaller stories happening concurrently in the same universe, rather than one large story.

Notes
While the RP itself will take place in a forum thread, I prefer to do most OOC discussion via Discord. I maintain a server that acts as a general hub for all of my RPs. Ping @Lexi for the ICAO role.

This RP has a short prequel to set up the world. It’s not required reading, but it may prove useful for you if you’re interested in participating in ICAO. Abducting the Plagued Scream.

Characters will need to be accepted in pairs as partners (you can post sheets solo and find a partner after, you just won’t be accepted until you have a partner). And since I’m sure everyone is gonna want to play an Incubator, you’re allowed to play one of each character type, you just can’t be your own partner.

While you are allowed to play as one of the three agent specializations, do be aware that to qualify your character would have to be almost entirely focused on fitting into that specialization and that it will severely restrict their usefulness in a broader sense.
