Title: How does fertilization work?
Post by: Zereth on August 15, 2006, 08:29:00 pm
As far as I can tell, the process is supposed to go like this:

Produce ash at a wood furnace.
Use ash and a bucket to make a bucket of lye.
Use the bucket of lye to make potash.
Use the potash to fertilize your fields, increasing crop yeild to the 18 immigrants who showed up with the spring thaw.

Now, how it actually seems to be going is like this:

Produce ashes at the furnace.
Dwarves take ash and a bucket to the ashery.
Dwarves then nail the bucket to the ashery so it can't be used and snort the ashes so they disappear.

Am I missing something?

If you do [k] and the enter on the bucket, is there lye inside?  It might look like it is gone because it isn't in the building inventory.

Oh ho! It DOES in fact contain lye!

Which the dwarves don't seem to be able to figure out, so they won't make potash with it.

Oh, and I have to use [t] becuase the bucket's inside the ashery still.

Oh whoops -- there's an extra step.  bucket of lye needs to be poured into an empty barrel in your furniture pile, or the potash makers won't see it, I think.

btw, Toady, has there been a turndown in farm output in this version? I seem to have extreme trouble trying to build up a food store with 2 6x6 farms and about 45 dwarves. I'm always perched on the cusp of starvation, as each plant showing on the map only shows up as a single when harvested, rather than 2 or 3 as it was before. Given how easy it was to keep the stores full of about 80 plants with the same amount of fields and farmers and 70 dwarves in a prior version, i wonder if there has been a switch?

Aw man. I have a hard enough time getting them to do stuff when I know about it. Is this "item hauling"?

I think it might actually require fertilizer to get it up now.  Has anybody gotten potash from a barrel of lye yet?  I haven't heard much positive news about that step.

Yes, I've been making potash successfully. It is kind of annoying how much hauling they do, though. I think workshop buildings really need to look for materials in the building itself before looking for stockpiles.

i've had, but it took an entire spring to even get 5 pieces of potash due to various cannot find item errors for the lye barrel as it was being moved around. Way too labour inefficient for my own tastes, especially if you need 10 pieces for a decent-sized field.

10 pieces for a field of 40 = 120-200 food. I don't think that's too extravagant.

I think from a 2x2 with one potash you get an average of 8 extra food, anywhere from 0 to 16.

Off to the planning phone call (a few hours every day with co-developer ThreeToe, though we've just been reading stories about killer groundhogs and laughing lately)...  I'll put up whatever I've got compiled after that, I think, and we can then welcome Gezol to the game.

It was way too easy to farm before, now its way too hard and inefficient. There must be some kind of...medium.

I don't think farming skill gives an output bonus right now.  That might help.

Also if cooking skill gave even a small bonus to food output, or well cooked food was a leeetle more nutritious, that would help a bit too.

(I tested this in a pair of short games, and a 4 click cook never gave any bonus food over ingredients, and the cooked food did not stave off starvation any longer than non-cooked food, alas).

I'm just spamming farms and ignoring the fertilisation for now, though that may change now I've got the java lava buildings setup so my dependance upon wood is down to just beds now.

I'm praying that my 100 odd plots of mud will get me through the season with my new immigrants.

I'm not having any real problems with farming, although it would be nice if fertilizer just gradually bled off instead of dropping to 0 instantly every time the season changes.

Also, it wouldn't hurt if there were small output increases for wood burning/lye making.

I assume you didnt play the last two versions yet ? You can ignore fertilizer IF you have hundreds of seeds AND lots of highly skilled farmers, but there is no way to get those seeds without fertilisation, and training farmers can take years.

You still get surplus seeds without fertilization--plump helmets leave behind more than one seed sometimes. Also, really, even an unskilled farmer can plant more than 2 seeds in the time it takes for them to get hungry once.

Incredibly rare, and also will take years to seriously fill your stores.

Yes, but you dont have many seeds at first, and dwarves eat at least 2 times more often in winter, probably even more than that.

Without really using any fertiliser I had the maximum, 200, plump seed spawns so having enough seed to fertilise has never been a problem. The real problem I have now is that hadn't bothered to set my farmers to farm only with my larger population so I didn't grow enough food this time around. I wonder if I'll get the next harvest in before they all go crazy and start butchering each other for sweet, sweet ichor.
