Title: CYOGTCG: A TCG game where you make your own cards! Decks created: 7
Post by: Supernerd on July 01, 2019, 01:05:06 am
This is the newest version of CYOGTCG. A long time ago someone called Varkarrus created a variant of 1,000 blank white cards and it was extremely fun. I'm bringing it back once again, which I have probably done at least four times now. The quirk this time? When you start playing you design an entire deck for yourself! I'll balance the actual card stats myself. (Fair warning, things will never be 100% balanced)

Game Rules
1) You start off each game with 20 hearts, and 5 cards in your hand. For any given game, you and your opponent may decide to start with a different amount of any of those three things.
2) If you have 0 or less hearts, you lose.
3) At the start of each turn, you draw one card.
4) Unless stated otherwise, you can only play one card per turn.
5) Cards also have hearts. If they have 0 hearts, they go away, unless stated otherwise. If a card says it has attack power, it can only damage the player directly if they have no cards defending them.
6) If a card has zero hearts when you play it, it will be destroyed after it does its effect.
7) There is a kind of resource called Stars, and you start the game with 0 of them. Strong Cards cost Stars to play, and they can be gained with the effects of weak cards. This prevents your best cards from being played immediately. Cards may also have effects that cost stars to use. (Stars carry over between turns)
8) The player who goes second starts the game with one star.
9) You can also make up your own resources for your cards if you really want.
10) Cards cannot attack on the turn they are played unless otherwise stated, and can only attack once per turn unless otherwise stated. When a card attacks another card, both cards lose hearts equal to the other card's attack
11) By default, if a card is face down it cannot be attacked. Cards may be attackable when face down, in which case this must be declared when playing the card.
12) Face Down cards cannot protect you from being attacked until it is flipped up. If a facedown card does something it will be flipped.
13) The game will typically use the honor system, so players can randomize their own deck and draw cards without GM intervention. If you suspect someone is cheating, inform the GM. Its just sad if you feel the need to cheat in this game. For grudge matches, you can request the GM do all the random stuff.
14) Strive to avoid situations which will require a retcon. Those are a big pain to clean up.
15) In the event of a disagreement, the GM will decide what happens.
16) Don't be afraid to get creative with your deckbuilding!
17) If a card says it does something "At the end of each turn", this only means your own turns unless it specifically states otherwise.

Relative card strength
A card that costs no stars to play would typically have a combined stat total of 5. (Example, 2 attack and 3 hearts). Useful effects will generally lower this, and detrimental effects can raise it. You can also make cards with no hearts which act like "Spells". Each star a card costs will typically raise its base stat total by 3 or 4. Very high star costs can have ridiculous effects.

Tips
Cards can do all kinds of things if you want them to! Want to attack on the turn a card is played? You can give it an effect to let it do that. Don't like only playing one card per turn? Make some cards that don't count towards the limit, and some other cards that let you draw more cards!

You'll want to consider your "Star economy". You can have just a few cards with a very high star cost, or maybe an equal amount of star generators and star consumers. Or maybe just skip the stars altogether and have a lot of basic cards.

You can give cards effects that trigger when they are destroyed, when they attack, when they are attacked, when played alongside another card, cards with an effect depending on how long the game has been going on for, or any number of things really. Surprise me!

Deck Creation
Decks will start out with 40 cards. This may be negotiable in the future. You can have multiple copies of the same card in your deck and I recommend having at least a few multiples to make this a bit easier on the GM. For each card you want to make, provide the following information. PM your card information to the GM, do not post it in the thread!

1) Card Name
2) Star Cost if applicable
3) Card effects and/or flavor text
4) Hearts and Attack.
5) Card background color (All cards will have a very light background)
6) A picture for the card. All pictures should be 100 x 180 pixels in size. (100 vertical and 180 horizontal)

It is recommended to use terms such as "Low" or "High" when discussing what you want a card's stats to be. The GM reserves the right to refuse any card for any reason.

Facedown Cards
In the event that a card says it can be placed face down, use this image to represent the face down card. Somewhere along the lines it was decided that this is to be the back of all CYOGTCG cards forever. Its a tradition I don't intend to break.

Player Mechanics
These game mechanics are used by some cards and cannot easily be explained with card text alone. You only need to pay attention to these if a card actually uses them.

Definitely want to participate in this. Just uh, going to take a while to come up with all of my card ideas. Might take quite a bit just to decide the theme of my deck honestly, though I definitely have ideas.

edit: also, is there a difference between card image and card picture, or was that an error?

This looks fun. Seems simple. All we do is PM you our card info/ideas/deck and you do whatever it is GMs do, right?

This was me just being silly, and also not doing a good proofreading job at 1:00am.

Also, here's another quick tip: Make sure you design some cards around turning the tables when your opponent has the upper hand.

This looks fun. Seems simple. All we do is PM you our card info/ideas/deck and you do whatever it is GMs do, right?

Also yes. Just PM the cards you want made and I'll make them into actual cards for you.

You can play one card per turn, unless stated otherwise.
There's nothing stopping you from stating otherwise as much as you like on your cards (Aside from a bit of nerfing of said cards I guess).

Also, officially the images you provide to me should be 180 pixels wide and 100 pixels tall. I'll make some degree of effort to modify pictures of incorrect sizes.

Someone asked if stars carry over to the next turn. The answer is yes. You keep stars until something happens that would make you lose them.

Would it be accurate to assume there's a Hearthstone/MtG situation going on here, where when a Card attacks another card, they both damage from each other?

Also, do face down cards flip automatically when attacked, or is that something you would need to add as an effect if you wanted it to happen?
Title: Re: CYOGTCG: A TCG game where you make your own cards! Decks created: 1
Post by: Supernerd on July 01, 2019, 04:20:29 pm
I'm... Going to rule in favor of cards both doing their attack damage to eachother when a card attacks another card. Seems a bit more balanced that way.

I'm also going to make a ruling on face down cards. When a card is face down, it cannot be attacked or protect you from being attacked until it is flipped unless otherwise stated.

I will also add this information to the first post.

Well, I've got all my cards written, but it will likely take until tomorrow to submit them. Also, for what its worth, I do apologize for the amount of work, I feel like I may have made far more individual cards than anyone else.

I knew what I was getting into the moment I clicked on the word post. Though it may take several days to process all the cards.

Bluh. I actually thought of a great deck idea myself. So... If anyone else wants to host a similar game so that I can use it, that would be great?

How many individual cards do you have Failbird? I have about 14 although 1 card got cut from the final decklist after it got nerfed a bit to put in a couple more copies of the others.

What randomizer are people planning to use for their decklist? I got annoyed searching for one so I numbered my cards 1-40 and then wrote 1-40 on an RL set of extra playing cards I had Because I couldn't find one that didn't give Dupes.

In total, 22 cards. Though it doesn't help that some of them are kinda two cards in one in a way.

Game is not dead yet, but if nobody gets their deck information in, then it might be.

One person actually submitted the information needed for a deck.
We are waiting on two people to submit card images and background colors.
One person made a vague concept but no cards.

Wow, Thats quite the ramp you got there.

Starting off I'll draw my card bringing me back up to 6

Quote
Hand: 6
Hearts: 20
Stars: 0

I guess I'll have to wait a bit more to really get this started, for now I'll summon my Merling Coral Collector onto the field, and I will Attack one of your cheers with my Merling scum Destroying it.

5 stars at the start of your next turn, quite the ramp indeed.

I'll take my turn then, before I leave for work.

I draw a card, bringing me back to 6 once again

Quote
Hand: 6
Hearts: 20
Stars: 1

Hmm, I can definitely see some paths of improvement in the future once I go to retool this deck.
Either way, I will ram my Merling scum into rabbit trooper dealing to Damage to it, putting it at 5/1.
As merling scum is destroyed, A Merling Scum is summoned without an effect and I draw a card, bringing my hand up to 7 cards.

Then, I summon My Merling Ritual Fodder from my hand, and end my turn.
As my Turn ends, My coral collector activates and I gain 1 star.

I think one person wrote the numbers 1 through 40 on a deck of standard cards and is drawing from it.
Conventional random number generators can also work.

I am the one doing that, I just got annoyed with number generators so I said fuck it and used an expendable deck of cards.
I have three piles of cards on my shelf that I pull down when need. My board, my hand and my deck. This way I don't have to check what numbers I've already drawn.
Best part is that since I used 1-40, and not card names, I can use it for any other made up deck I need to.

Alrighty, I'll just copy that idea.
It will be a while as I must work through this week, but I'll start brainstorming.

Edit to prevent double posting: can any card be played face down? Can we pay stars to 'fake' playing a higher cost card?

Ooh, You really like your token generators huh,

when coral collector is destroyed, I gain 1 star bringing me to a total of 3
Then I draw a card to kick my turn off bringing me up to 7 cards in my hand

Quote
Hand: 7
Hearts: 20
Stars: 3

I will pay 2 stars in order to summon, Naga Blood witch from my hand!
Then I will ram my Scum and Ritual fodder into one of your sweepers, Bringing all three of them to an untimely death (3-2=1+1=2-2=0).
When My ritual fodder is destroyed, I gain 1 star putting me back to 2 and I return it to my hand.

With that, I will end my turn.

No problem Failbird  :D

Anyway, To start my turn I will draw one card putting my hand at 8 (+1 from ritual fodder last turn and draw now)

Quote
Hand: 8
Hearts:20
Stars:2

Well then, I will pay 1 star and play my Merling Hermit from my hand.
After I summon my hermit, I will activate my Blood witches effect, allowing me to deal 1 damage to my merling and in turn deal 1 to destroy your agent.

After that, I will have my blood witch attacks your Sweeper, removing it from the field and dealing 2 points of damage to my Naga.
With that I will end my turn.

As I end my turn, hermits effect activates, giving all monster on my board 1 heart, putting my hermit back at 1/6 and my naga back at 4/5

Clarification on face down card rules:

A card that is face down can neither be attacked or prevent you from being attacked unless stated otherwise.

In this case, the face down card specifically can be attacked so you can attack it with any cards that are capable of attacking. The card cannot prevent your opponent from being attacked directly until it is flipped. You may do a partial action where you attack the card, which will cause it to flip and do whatever, then finish the turn after that is resolved.

Ok, With that clarified I will start my turn by drawing a card.

Quote
Hand: 8
Hearts: 20
Stars:1

Well then, This could go terribly right or terribly wrong. I will start this off by summoning my Merling Slave to the field.
Spoiler: Merling Slave (click to show/hide)
Afterward, I will activate blood witchs effect, dealing 3 to my slave in order to deal 3 damage to Failbird105, putting you down to 15.
With my slave destroyed, I am able to summon a 0 cost merling straight from my hand. Welcome back Ritual Fodder

To bring your health down even farther, My hermit and blood witch will attack you directly as well, dealing 5 damage to you and bringing you down to 10 Hearts total!

As I end my turn, Hermits effect activates, setting blood witch a 4/6, my hermit at 1/7 and my fodder at 2/2

Yes. Provided that it doesn't specifically say you can't of course.
... I think I see what is about to happen!

I'm also going to point out that the Merling effect "All monsters gain 1 heart" would also apply to your card.
Because the effect says "All monsters".

Haha,  I see that if I hadn't gotten greedy for 1 more damage and kept my Slave around, my blood witch would have survived. silly me  :'(

Anyway, This is quite the situation.
When my ritual fodder was destroyed, I gain a Star putting me back at 2 and it returns to my hand, putting me back at 7 cards before I make my draw for the turn.

Quote
Hand:8
Hearts: 20

Hmmm, I will definitely need to tweak this deck around, I feel like it has two schools of thought and not enough of either to really commit to one. Not enough swarm to take advantage of all the 0 cost's and not enough Star generation to take advantage of the high end I've made, leading to quite a few dead cards in hand if I can't draw the right pieces.

Anyway, I thankfully have a way out of the situation I've put myself in, By paying all my stars (2) and summoning a second Blood witch from my hand to replace the one that has fallen. I will use her effect, dealing 5 damage to my hermit in order to destroy your Der Freishutz and leaving my Hermit with 2 hearts remaining.
After that My hermit will pop one of your Cheer tokens by attacking it.

By ending my turn, My hermit's effect activates and as such your tokens become 0/2, my blood witch becomes 4/7 and my hermit will be healing back to 1/3.

By Zoe do I get what you mean. I almost wish I could go back and re-make my deck, because there's a bunch of things I'd change after having spent the time to think it through.

I'm talking a couple cards completely reworked, a keyword to cut a whole two or more lines off of a solid third of my cards, and a significant number of cards given a 'one copy per deck' effect(might lump it in with the keyword since all the cards with the keyword would have it.)

Anyway, tired right now, will do stuff when I wake up.

At the beginning of my turn, I draw a card, bringing me up to 8.

First I attack the Perimeter Fence with my rightmost Weary Toilers (who has the Black Flag +3a bonus). Both the fence and the toilers die. The black flag remains in play, now giving its bonus to the next toilers.

I then play an Active Toilers which allows me to play another card.

Next (you're going to hate this), I play Join The Cause on the Mega Tank for 4 stars. (I had to get rid of the fence first to do this.)

Spoiler: Join The Cause (click to show/hide)

And then I attack with my second Weary Toilers (1a+3a=4), destroying the Crystal Mine.

Next it depends on the interpretation of the wording of the cards. If I can attack with the tank straight away (it's now in my control and it hasn't been played on my turn), then I will do so, taking out the Plutonirium Reactor, wrapping over 8 damage. However, if we want to interpret the restriction on attacking with played cards that they can't normally attack on the same round as they were played (as is the case in MtG, say), then it won't attack (though the OP does say 'turn'). In the spirit of fairness, I'll let you decide the interpretation for this game, Kashyyk.

Finally my remaining Weary Toilers gives me another +1 star, bringing me up to 2.

Ooof. I'm not sure it matters either way really, I don't think I'll be surviving many more turns after that play. But the rules do just refer to turns, so I'm going to say I get clobbered by my own tank.

It was definitely a knife's edge: I was probably not going to live long with that tank around. I got lucky I didn't blow my stars on something before the tank turned up.

At the beginning of my turn, I draw a card, bringing me up to 7. My Active Toilers triggers, bringing me up to 3s.

I then spend 3s to play Max Stirner. He doubles my equipment bonuses but that won't be relevant this turn.

Given your extra hearts, I can't kill you off this round, so I don't attack with the toilers. Instead I just attack one of the battle droids with the tank. Tank takes 1 damage, 8 damage wraps around onto you.

Finally my remaining Weary Toilers gives me another +1 star, bringing me up to 1.

So the Black Flag goes back into my hand rather than the discard pile. At the beginning of my turn, I draw a card, bringing me up to 7. My Active Toilers triggers, bringing me up to 2s.

For fun, at no cost, I'll play Black Flag next to the tank (giving it +6a). Then Mega Tank will attack Battle Droid, destroying it and dealing 14 damage to you, putting you on -10 hearts. That should be sufficient overkill!

The revolution was successful!

That was fun! I liked your engine building, and it'd be neat to see more of what you could do. I had loads more unique character cards I didn't get to explore. My Join The Cause card is probably a bit OP, though I suppose you would have been able to counter them with a few more fences or if you took out my toilers before they gave too many stars.

Happy to play again or take any other challengers.
Title: Re: CYOGTCG: A TCG game where you make your own cards! Decks created: 6
Post by: notquitethere on August 02, 2019, 11:09:05 am
Some of the ideas behind my deck:
- I wanted equipment cards that would buff the monsters (in this case, anarchists)- I decided it could be interesting to have a mechanic where card positioning was important-- I could choose where a card is placed, but not rearrange them in play, so it added a nice tactical layer to the playing of the cards.
- I have more unique cards unrevealed, but the Max Stirner card is one of the ones which most clearly works well with equipment, with the support spell (I think of them as 'events') Raid the Armoury able to get more equipment out.
- The Toiler cards are the foundation of the deck, allowing more cards to be drawn and played, giving a constant star income, and even allowing an attack if necessary. Having two different varieties to choose from adds a little bit of strategic depth.
- I love converting other player's cards, so I was keen to include that element. You can see it worked to great effect here.
- Some of my other cards (unplayed) mess around a bit with the star economy. With the effectiveness of the toilers, I didn't really need to do any of that this game but it was an option (making things cheaper for myself, making things harder for the other player to spend their stars etc.)
- There were a few other ideas which I'll keep as a surprise for the next game I play!

Hopefully on the weekend I'll be able to play at the rate we see here. Very entertaining.
Looking forward to seeing what you've come up with!

We managed that one nice and quick. I'll let Supernerd get back to you about any deck changes, and also see if we can get a precise definition of the meaning of the word 'turn' in the rules, and then if you don't have any fresh challengers by then we can rematch. But if anyone else wants to faceyou first, I'll give them precedence.

I'm not sure if any of those cards in the concluded duel were improperly balanced or not. On one hand the Plutorinium Reactor produced a crazy amount of stars, but it required some setup. The tank was pretty crazy too, but it was played at a time when the other player could reasonably be expected to counter it, which they did.

I legitimately don't know who would win in a rematch.

Man, now I want to make a deck. But as GM, there would be too much bias. Maybe if someone else made a similar game?

We could check your deck for you and you could still keep some of it secret if you sent half to one player and half to another. Obviously you've seen all our decks and could build the perfect counter... but we could at least ensure that the individual cards were reasonably balanced.

So looking at the last game I notice a quirk. In MTG(which is my area of expertice) there is usually one attack phase per turn. In this game so far there can be multiple split attacks, as in the case where notquitethere's toiler attacked with the black flag and then after that attack the other toiler then took advantage of the same buff.

I know hearthstone works this way, and I'm not sure about yugioh. But is this intended behavior?

Also, phone battery is dying, so that's it for me tonight.

How exactly things work depend on how YOU design the cards. The flag is a sort of equipment item that is not actually equipped. The Adjacency thing requires it to be set up a specific way, but there's no reason why it wouldn't be possible to benefit from the buff more than once per turn if you plan around that.

And that's fine, whether that works or not however is out of the hands of the player and rests solely on the game's core mechanics. Judging by your response I can see that sequential attacks are intended so my question is answered.

Would it be possible to have multiple decks? Or duel multiple people at once?

Making entire decks of cards takes work. Its allowed, but please make use of your current deck a few times before requesting a new one. Consider requesting just a few new cards instead.

As for multiple duels, I don't see why not. Feel free to make up new game rules as well, like maybe a 2v2 thing.

It wasn't really a mistake given the context, I have no more plays. Its effect only works when face down and allowing me to receive damage, which was unacceptable at 10 damage to my 7 hearts.

So after drawing I play nothing and you win next turn. GG.

I've been thinking about the card costs-- whether we should try to standardise or set a minimum for common effects like drawing cards, playing cards, generating stars. One neat balancing thing is that the attack and hearts stats are balanced 1:1 (two cards with equal total hearts and attacks will always kill each other at the same time no matter what the specific heart or attack value of each card is).

1A,4H vs 2A,3H (both totaling 5)?
I believe the second card would survive with 1H.
In most situations, yes, that does apply, however.
As for standardizing, that does go against the spirit of the game, if not the rules. The point is to do what you like.

GG. Sorry about the 9 overkill damage. And yeah, in context, I guess it wasn't that bad of a move, assuming you had no more 0-star cards in your hand?

I also never got to use two of the card designs in my deck. I did draw one of them, but after I spent the stars required to play it.

Ah yes, it all worked out for the examples I ran through in my head, but you're quite right, it doesn't always hold.

I suppose the spirit of the game is to keep things as minimalistic as possible-- though the GM might have their own rules of thumb for balancing.

I know when I was making my deck I considered additional effects worth about two points if they were pretty minor or temporary, three points if it was an oncoming effect, with a reduction of one point if there was a restriction.

If it seems about right, I'll generally accept it. A key part of this game is creativity. If a card needs to be "Standardized" then you're probably designing the card wrong.

GG. Sorry about the 9 overkill damage. And yeah, in context, I guess it wasn't that bad of a move, assuming you had no more 0-star cards in your hand?
Yeah, my hand was full of modules, support cards, and things just slightly too expensive to play.

Which brings me to mention the big downfall of my deck, it is just so star hungry. Several 'pay 1 star' effects and generally my actual fighters are 2 cost or more. Furthermore is the requirement for mechs to attach modules to. I only managed to get one on the battlefield, and only drew one more right at the end, all of my other mechs never saw my hand even with the aggressive drawing my Cypher allowed me.

And that starting hand... I actually had the thought to propose a mulligan. I started with no mechs, and no star producers, only usable cards were a plasma mine and that spatial distortion.

Once you've both finetumed your decks, do you fancy playing notquitethere and myself?

We could do 1v1s, or a 2v2? There's the MTG variant "Two Headed Giant" where teammates share life and act on the same turn. That might be possible, assuming we can line each phase of actions easily.

Or we could just do a standard 2v2 where we cycle round each player in turn like a 1v1v1v1, except people are in teams.
Title: Re: CYOGTCG: A TCG game where you make your own cards! Decks created: 6
Post by: notquitethere on August 07, 2019, 02:15:13 am
I'm definitely up for another game. We could play a team game, though as we're in different time zones it's probably best to keep the exact turn order loose-- two headed giant would be fine if both team members act on the same turn but it doesn't matter which of them plays first-- it'd go speedier than 1v1v1v1.

If we do Two Headed-- would we share star pools as well? And, for card effects, will team mates share a board?

I've submitted my deck modifications.
I don't think I'm ready for a Two-Headed game. I could do a 1v1v1, or 1v1v1v1.
Or two 1v1s simultaneously, if nobody minds me playing two games at once and doubling my post size.

Once my deck changes and 2 new cards have been approved.

So I have a star, and everything in my hand... requires a star now. I guess I'll play a Desert Comber, and add a card to my hand.

I draw a card, up to 5. Gain a star, up to 2. I then spend those 2 on Nestor Makhno. When he comes into play, I can play an equipment card for free. So I'll throw a Little Round Bomb.

I think it could do with making more expensive, perhaps star cost +1, as it's equivalent to eliminating a foe at the same time as playing an identically powerful card.

Honestly, yes.
Wizards of the coast know this. Mind control effects in MTG commonly run 6 mana for a permanent effect, and 2-3 mana for a temporary until end of turn.

Also Kashyyk, want to try a game?

Fine by me. I was thinking of some of the other one-off cards as implicitly having a 'unique' tag to them anyway. I had four in my deck, so I'll replace one with an Insurrection!, one with a Redistribution, and one with a Barricades, as I haven't played any of those three cards yet.

My understanding would be that Cyberdragon's "may attack the enemy player directly" only trumps the normal restriction on having to attack enemy cards first and the fence would take precedence. But it's up to Supernerd to make a ruling or yourselves to come to an agreement.

For the record, I would generally go by the literal meaning of the text when trying to figure out how opposing effects interact with eachother. If there's still no clear answer, I would probably say the more obscure and situational effect would take precedence.

For the record, this is the card that was forged. Like, before this card was even made. I guess that makes this the forgery?

This is me pushing mtg logic again, but in that game as a rule 'cannot' is considered more powerful then 'can'. So as a mtg player, the interpretation was obvious for me.

Also, nope at 3 makes sense to me, that's about as powerful as it gets for single turn removal in this game as far as I can see.

Supernerd's deck is shaping up, almost ready to roll. When I was helping edit it, I did think it might be useful to allow players to have a glossary for their deck so that wordy but commonly used effects (like "this card doesn't count towards the play limit" or "if this card would be destroyed, put it in your hand instead") can be expressed as a keyword ability like "Bonus" or "Recycler". Like Magic does with Haste, Flying, etc.

Well, I haven't actually come across that situation before. I've known that specific trumps general, but I didn't know cannot trumps can.
I guess in situations where the word cannot comes up, it's always in defiance of the usual general rules, at least where I've come across it. For example, Defender, "This card cannot attack", it trumps the usual rule that creatures may attack during the combat phase. Which is a case of specific over general.
So as for the Dragon being immune to destruction effects, Nope! doesn't actually even destroy it, it just moves it to discard. Plus it says none of the abilities of the other card activate, so I'd say that specifically trumps blanket immunity. So I'd say Nope! would work on it.

Also, agreed, I can see some removal being cheaper, but Nope! is as powerful as it gets. It's more powerful than a Nope! in Exploding Kittens.

I'm going to give my opinions...

For your deck:
-Flexible star generation, can be used as blockers, healing, and with the reactor, proper generation at two per own turn, with potential to spike to four in some cases.
-High token generation: good for attrition.
-Perimeter Defense, a reliable, if lower impact tool to keep your other cards safe. As a note, I would be careful in your application of hearts to these, as the star generation is far more valuable.
-Mega Tank, exceptionally powerful for its cost, we saw 10/10 at 5 stars and this manages to be 4 stars with a trample effect, that's scary.
-Matchups, you ran into Join the Cause, which has been generally accepted as maybe too powerful, I'd argue it's flat out the most powerful card in this thread so far. Then when we played I pretty much had the perfect hand and follow up draws, I only had one assembly bay and cyber dragon in the deck at the time and they appeared exactly when I needed them.

Against your deck:
-Fragile economy, it's combo based, thus can be easily disabled.
-General low HP, the chaingun was meant for ripping apart token decks, and your deck fits the bill, but what is worse is even your economy is that low on hearts.
-No notable draw-power/deck searching, at least as far as we have seen, and in a deck that uses a combo based economy and reliance on big hitters like the mega tank to bring the hammer down and win the game, this might be crippling.

Worth noting is that I have two additional cards that haven't seen the light of day yet. One is alternate form of direct damage, and the second nerfs hostile attack power.

The biggest restriction I've been feeling is the "play 1 card per turn" rule, mainly cos I come from MTG. I think something that lets me get around that will help me realise this deck a little better.

I've been pondering a variant on the action limit. It might be interesting if we get two play or draw actions but can choose which. So you could play/draw as now, or instead draw two cards or instead play two cards.

When we played Flabort, it was pretty close up until the tank theft-- your ability to use the fence to protect your weak but powerful star generating engine is good. Ideally in the last bout you would have wanted to save up stars for your tank? Do you have many 2 and 3 star cards to play at that phase of the game?

I only had my one star things, but they were all very vulnerable to getting stomped to death by shadow's mech/dragon.

Anyway, I have tweaked my deck further and added a new card, so I'm ready to go again with someone. Maybe flabort, as the only person I haven't played against yet?

I've made a second thread so that Supernerd can challenge players with the new necromancy deck. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=174503.0) The rules are almost exactly the same on Thread B, though I have listed some example variants you can use when challenging each other. If there's currently a game running on this thread and you'd like to start another at the same time, take it to thread B.

I'm also building a second deck, so if anyone would like to challenge a Forest themed deck, they soon will be able to.

I feel I should give one more crack at the Lego deck before trying something completely different.
I'd be willing to try 3 player free for all with it.
I assume the arbitrary attack order means that attacks can be targeted at arbitrary players.

So, NQT, SHAD0Wdump, I challenge you to a free for all. Tradition means GM decides who goes first.

Actually, it's pretty early in game, think we should count it as end of my turn only right now? That'll saw off two stars from my turn and have me at 4. Much more in line.
I always thought it was a little annoying having to account for my opponent's end of turn anyway and I'd still favor them being very tough.

So I draw a card, up to 8 (having happily received a Quick Thinking). This could well be the ticket! But in case it's not... I play a Biodiversity, which allows me to play two more cards.

First I play Quick Thinking:

I roll a 5 and a 6, giving me an extra star and allowing me to play another card this turn. So I still have two cards to play.

First I play another Squirrel, playing an acorn face down. I was saving it for when I had more rabbits to play alongside it, but as I have the free play, I'll then play a Rabbit. Then I'll flip over an Acorn and spend my two stars swapping it for Oak Tree!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I'll attack the Happy Painter with the Crow and the Magpie (2 damage each), destroying it. Then I'll attack the injured Scavenger Bot with my slightly beefed up Squirrel, dealing 2 damage.

Finally, the Oak Tree drops a face-up acorn. Note that it will do that at the end of each of your turns, and the Magpie tax is still in effect.

First I weep for the felled oak, then draw a card up to 5. Then I sacrifice all 6 acorns to buff my squirrels +6h. Then I destroy Crippled Genius with the unbuffed Squirrel, then I attack the Absorber Titan with the buffed Squirrel. My understanding of the wording is only when the titan is the active attacker does his ability trigger, so defending shouldn't trigger the ability. (So this should leave Titan on 10h, and Squirrel on 1h).

Finally, I play Decay:

Currently at work so my turn has to wait, but we have a situation we need a ruling on here.

On my turn I am going to be shooting the Expendable Soldier and would normally lay on the damage onto Flabort, but whether I can or not depends on the soldier's ability. By my understanding it should cause him to immediately draw and possibly play a card that I need to know about to make those follow up attacks.

In the interest of progressing the game, I declare a chaingun attack on expendable soldier as part of my impending turn.

I appreciate the forewarning. I could have also let you know what gets changed in your turn, or you could have posted the first half of your turn and waited - in any case, the soldier is being destroyed.

For the record, my card draw from losing the Soldier is, in fact, 1 star, so a Desert Comber gets played, and I will use his ability to search for a happy painter.

It is true that you have to destroy expendable soldier before you can attack the Desert comber in this situation. However, a chaingun attack was previously declared and the net effect of that in this case would be the expendable soldier being destroyed, chaingun being taking 0 damage and being able to attack again. It was certainly worth mentioning on the turn post itself though.

Supernerd, hypothetically speaking, if a mech was stealthed (i.e. flipped upside down) would any of their modules be able to attack/defend?

I draw my card, spoiler it costs 5 stars so I won't play it, and instead play Sniper Shot to kill one worm, and earn 1 star.

A card cannot do anything while upside-down. The modules are lost when the mech is destroyed, but flipping is not equal to destroying. If the mech is flipped and the modules are not, then the modules would still be able to attack; but would not gain any benefits from the mech such as damage reduction etc.

OK, probably doomed still, but let's see if I can put up a fight. First I spend a star to upgrade my baby bear to a Brown Bear. Then I draw a card.

Then I play it's Verdant Growth:

So I play two more cards.

First I pick a Weasel and then I'm going to do some attacks before playing my last card:

First: Badger will flip over your Phalanx Assault Mech. As the Brown Bear is a replacement, it can still attack this turn. Which I will, attacking Phalanx for 6. Then Badger will attack for 4, bravely sacrificing itself. Then Weasel, who can attack straight away will attack Phalanx, and also die. It was brutal, but this has the nice benefit of also destroying all the attached modules.

And then I play a Decay! This removes 14 cards from my discard (including all those worms) and spams my board full of Worms again!

Huh. By MTG rules, a token is not a card, so any effect that would send it to the discard pile would just remove it from play instead.

I don't 5hink we have an official ruling on that yet.

In the rules as written here, a token is explicitly a card:

Token: This is a card that is "Created" by another card which is not an actual card you can draw from your deck directly. Tokens should have their own card made for them, (There is at least one grandfathered exception)

The 'tokens' in this game aren't really tokens at all, as they have more than just health and attack, often they have quite involved effects of their own.

It is a bit cheeky yeah. I could amend it to have them be exiled from play after dying in future games. If it makes you feel better, this is one of only two ways this deck gets stars, and it has no every-turn star generators. Rather than an infinite drip-feed, there's just a big load of them all at once.

I think that decay may need to be nerfed. This is a positively inappropriate amount of stars being generated here.
In a single chunk, probably? Though that's really only because Shadwodump is choosing to kill all the worms in one go. He could have chosen to build up his forces until he could wipe me out in one swoop. It's even possible that for whole game-wide star generation, SHAD0Wdump may have generated more. It's also partially balanced out by the fact that the deck has no real mega game ending cards. The most expensive effect is Fox which is just a 2 star 4/4 with First Strike; and Acorn -> Oak Tree, which requires me to first play a Squirrel. Still, I think having the worms be exiled would prevent me cycling the same worm hoard out twice. (Twice currently being the limit as I only have two decay cards, so I'm not going to repeat that trick again.)

I'll draw a card, then play a Verdant Growth, which allows me to draw two cards and play a card. And so I do that, and play a Squirrel. Squirrel drops his nut, which I then spend 2 stars to immediately turn into an Oak Tree. And... I'm back in the game with a fighting chance. At the end of my turn, the Oak Tree drops an acorn...

Will amend it to "at the start of your turn" when the game ends.

So at the end of your turn two more acorns spawn.

I'll draw a card, then play Heavy Rain. This deals 1 damage to all your cards (with the shield redirect, none to Phalanx, and either 1 or 0 to shield, depending on how you interpret that.)

It also puts a Long Grass from my deck into play.

Squirrel will attack one of the Scavenger Bots.

Then I will spend 6 stars to put three more oak trees in play, converting all current acorns. Then i drop five acorns. And now you might see why it's called the Forest Deck...

Decay as-written is a bit much. Maybe something like "put three worm tokens into play" would be an acceptable effect. I could stick with that and scrap the rabbits and long grass, as that's not a very workable star generation engine in practise.
